Yet Another ... Rise of the Runelords PBP

Starting in the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, danger lurks.

Crawling does provoke an AoO I'll take a swing and hope the GM allows it.
Greatsword: 1d20 + 6 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 4 - 1 = 19 (+4 for prone, -1 for power attack)
damage: 2d6 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (3, 1) + 4 + 2 = 10

Yes, I meant to be a little clearer ... you've got surprise. So, feel free to take a surprise action.

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

I'll let the second swing stand as his surprise action, Unless there's another opponent?

None that you can see.

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

I think I'm a little out of sync. I believe I coup de graced one and hit the second... are they both dead now?

Before the second terrified goblin can crawl away, you've struck him dead. You also notice a burlap sack tossed up against the southern wall, near where you entered. There's a hole in the northwest corner, leading to descending stairs.

What's everyone else doing?

Keeping a look out in prep towards moving north.

None of you on the ground notice any changes. You call continue to hear the sound of yipping and yelps from beyond the northwest door.

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

Ned will whisper down to the party, "The tower's clear. Did you want me to drop a rope or should I cover you from up here?"

Lleidr's concerned about what's between Ned and the group. He'll slip across the courtyard to the double doors in the western wall and give 'em the routine.

I just wanted to be clear that I wasn't picking a direction for the group. I was just curious about our various routes and wanted to check out all the options while Ned was applying for a role in Expendables 4 :)

And i completely forgot to give you results for your Perception checks. You notice nothing significant about the western doorways.

I'll update results a bit later this evening.

[Morning, Thistletop, 7th Day After Goblin Raid]

The western doors open into a wide, but dark, passage. Crude double-doors are at the end of the hall; a small door in the center of northern wall is nailed shut.

Jubrayl: For a second, I could hear the sound of goblin song, coming from the northern doors in the courtyard.

Thistletop

BTW, Jubrayl also found the end of the small passage that branches off to the east along the north wall of the corridor. It goes 20' past the courtyard, and has yet another door in the north wall, and also ends in a door which is attached to that eastern guard tower.

I'll have a new map updated for you tomorrow.

Just to be clear, the latest link 2 posts above is updated, it just doesn't show what Jub revealed. My kid didn't tell me his move until after I had posted. Doh.

The human priest moves into the wide dark passage and casts Light, moving to the double doors.

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

Ned will take a moment to look in the sack at his feet.

You find a number of half-eaten pickles in the bag, which is sopping wet with pickle brine.

Lleidr, Fang of Erylium in hand, will follow Nich into the corridor.

Thistletop

Not much to add here, but let me point out the exits again, since the doors aren't showing up very well on the image:

Ned is atop a stairwell.

The rest of the party is in a wide passage with double-doors on the east & west ends. There's a door north of Lleidr, nailed shut.

Back in the courtyard, the north wall there sports 4 seperate doors:

- one in the nw corner opposite Jubrayl, where you hear the familiar sounds of yipping and barking, and scratching at that door.

- adjacent to this door is another double door, more of a gate actually and very sturdy looking

- next to it another smaller door

- and 10' further east from this, another northern door deep in that eastern passage in the corner

And, that eastern passage leads to the 2nd guard tower, which ends in a door as well.

8th lvl Halfling (Rogue 6/Sorcerer 2); 22, 2'10", 32#; Str 8, Dex 20, Con 13, Int 8, Wis 9, Cha 16; AC: 21 (touch 17, ff n/a); hp 64; Initiative +5

Lleidr will eye the nailed shut door with unmistakable curiosity, but move on up to the double doors at the west end of this corridor, taking a moment to examine them before opening them up.

Perception: Hear Noise: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Perception: Trapfinding: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

The hallway has an unmistakable sour smell to it, especially from the north door. There's also the commotion with the goblin dogs outside the courtyard that seems to be getting louder. Other than that, nothing strikes you as unusual or dangerous.

8th lvl Halfling (Rogue 6/Sorcerer 2); 22, 2'10", 32#; Str 8, Dex 20, Con 13, Int 8, Wis 9, Cha 16; AC: 21 (touch 17, ff n/a); hp 64; Initiative +5

Is the sour smell pickles? Are you going to keep torturing Lleidr by withholding yummy snacks??

Confident that there's no danger on the other side, Lleidr will open the double doors.

OK, I don't think we need a new map upload. The western double doors open into the stairwell for the western guardpost.

Yes, the sour smell is highly reminiscent of pickles.

Trying to ignore his growling stomach (which I think is a capital offense in halfling culture), Lleidr will look around for the controls for the stair lift so we can help Ned back down to us.

Or for a less smart ass-y approach...are there any ways out of this area besides up the stairs? If there's no immediate danger of someone hearing, I guess a loud whisper up to Ned to come join us would be alright?

There's no lift, just crude wooden stairs which wind up to a hole in the ceiling. From Ned's point of view, he's in a room with a hole in the floor which leads to the same stairs, descending.

Let's assume Ned's aware of your approach.

I was just poking fun at Ned's age. A stair lift is one of those electric chairs on a rail that old/disabled people ride to get up and down stairs :)

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

lol, you didn't say that out loud so you don't have to endure a pickle barrage. :-)

Ned will take a last look around from the top of the tower perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 before climbing (limberly) down the ladder to rejoin the party.

"Something seems odd here, doesn't it? Even if the goblins we fought in the thorn tunnels don't have a way to warn these goblins of a threat--and why would they be guarding that area if they can't?--, the caster goblin fled this way, didn't he? Why didn't he raise an alarm? Instead, the only so-called opposition we find as we just stroll in the front gates is a pair of guards sleeping after gorging on pickles? Hell, I can still hear those dogs off the courtyard raising a ruckus, but no one's come to investigate? Odd."

Out of breath, Lleidr will grin and shrug off the burden of thinking about stuff.

"Anyhoo, speaking of those dogs, how about we go deal with them first? If we are moving into an ambush, at least we won't have to worry about another pack of those beasts tearing us up."

"And if there's any healing to be spared, I got swatted around fairly hard by that panther (15 of 25 hp currently), and it looks like a couple of you guys are hurt, too."

Ned, there's a small iron hammer, badly rusted, lying in between the goblins. There are several small circles on the hammer's head where the rust has been chipped away, as if the hammer had been recently used.

this was at the top of the watch tower? Is there something that looks hammered on here?

Yes, the small hammer was lying near the goblins; nothing appears to have been nailed shut up here.

It doesn't seem like the sort of thing Ned would comment on. He'll keep his eyes open for something thats been nailed shut.

Thanks, Nich!

So, while you're waiting for Ned to get back downstairs and rejoin the group, everyone else is in the wide, darkened passage, with double doors to the east and west and with a smaller door in the north wall, nailed shut.

The yips and whining from outside the courtyard continue.

Kinda crowded, but sure, sounds good. As soon as Ned's down, though, hopefully we're all moving back out into the courtyard. Whether we deal with the dogs first, or take another door, I want to get into some combat ASAP :)

Oh, and Zilt, just a request, and I don't know much about the map program you're using, but can you zoom in a bit on the next map update? I can't make out how handsome Lleidr is. Thanks, dude!

[Morning, Thistletop, 7th Day After Goblin Raid]

I’ve made a Perception check on your behalf, Lleidr. There’s no signs of traps or other dangers on the door. Peering through the slats on the door leading into a courtyard, you can make out several more goblin dogs scratching and barking on the gate in front of you. Patchy grass grows in tufts scattered across the dirt floor.

Thistletop

BTW, Jubrayl has some healing left today, if any of you need to take advantage before trying to tackle those dogs.

Lleidr will say, "Door's clear. I can see several more goblin dogs in a courtyard, but not much else. You guys ready? I can open the door and let them out." Finally answering the ancient riddle posed by the Baha Men!
