Izra casts a cure spell on Koshukhep.
CLW: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
The statue lifts up its staff and brings it to bear on Kwin.

Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Kwin manages to deftly dodge the first attack from the statue, even managing to get in some damage of his own.
Staff vs. Kwin: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Staff vs. Kwin: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Off balance, the statue misses with its second and third attack.
Round 3 to 4
Koshukhep: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Torin: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Djehuti: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

Monster: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Suri: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Bold is up. And you guys are very close. Kwin, you spent one panache point.
Graven Guardian AC 21, HP 5/53
Koshukhep |
Koshu paused to bow to Izra as her god cleared his vision and mended his bones. Then he turned right around and charged back into the fight!
adamantine flail: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 Yep, the dicebot hates me. And all of us, apparently. Well, except Kwin. He is a likeable fellow.
2h dmg: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
"You are too slow for quick little Kwin, you pile of camel-dung masonry," he growled, missing the surprisingly limber statue. "By Sekhmet's roar, I will not be driven back again before you fall!"
Current AC: 21
Torin Ironbeard |
"Well done Kwin. 'Bout time you started pulling your weight around here."
Pew: 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 7 - 1 + 1 = 15
Pew: 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 7 - 1 + 1 = 17
Torin gives his bow a look of betrayal, as both of his arrows fly wide.
Djehuti |
Djehuti pulls out yet another vial and lets fly nearly hits Torin in the back of the head. "Sorry!"
Vial: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 Yikes, with these dice!
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
wicked_raygun |
The statue looks like it is on its last legs. Ahmed, Koshukhep and Torin attack, but can't quite manage to do any serious damage to it. Djehuti throws a vial, but his throw is a little wild.
Kwin, Koshukhep and the Statue take 1 point of acid damage.
Round 4
Koshukhep: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Torin: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Suri: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Bold are up.
Graven Guardian AC 21, HP 4/53
Koshukhep |
Koshukhep batted at the stinging acid that had spattered him, ears flat. "Steady, Djehuti! Have no fear, we will bring it down!"
Which is his way of saying, "Aim first!" ;)
Kwin Longclaw |
No, DiceBot hates Kwin too. But that's trumped by its love for the GM.
Kwin turns far enough to point his sword at Torin. "We'll talk later, Short Round!" Without warning, he spins back towards the statue, unexpectedly lashing out...
+1 Shortsword: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
... to no benefit.
See? Now if Ray had rolled that...
wicked_raygun |
Considering how dire everything is with Kosh's health, we'll just assume that Izra would cast another heal on him. I believe this is her last spell of the day.
Izra evokes more healing magic into Koshukhep.
CLW for Koshukhep: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
***
Statue vs. Kwin: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13

Statue vs. Kwin: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16; Hit!
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
The statue continues its assault on the furry swashbuckler. Kwin manages to block the first attack with his sword, and tries to follow up with a riposte. But his attack is short of the mark.
The statue's next two hits are unfortunately rock solid and on target.
Round 4 to 5

Kwin has HP 6/25. Bold are up.

Kwin Longclaw |
A grunt escapes Kwin, barely audible over the one-two thwacks of the staff and the thud of the kitsune being slammed into the wall. Fur in disarray and huffing from having the wind knocked out of him, the swashbuckler begins backing away.
"Not... built... for this..."
Withdrawing. Can't update the map from here but will get it once I'm back home. Wall slammage is fluffy but since he's withdrawing I figure him being tossed around before that won't change anything. And I clearly see a baseball-style two-handed swing right to the gut and Kwin just folding around the staff as it propels him against the stone wall.

Djehuti |
Djehuti pulls out a scroll and starts chanting.
He'll use his Grease scroll to try to make the thing fall down, centering the effect on the square to map-left of the statue so that the radius doesn't include Koshu. He can delay until after Kwin withdraws so he doesn't get Kwin with it. DC 15 Reflex save or the statue falls, then it has to make Acrobatics checks to move.
Djehuti |
From the PRD: "Any creature in the area when the spell is cast must make a successful Reflex save or fall." The failing by 5 or more part is when making a subsequent Acrobatics check when trying to move through the affected area.
Torin Ironbeard |
-4 to hit since it's prone. Yay!
Twang: 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 7 - 1 + 1 - 4 = 4
Twang: 1d20 + 7 - 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 7 - 1 + 1 - 4 = 19
Torin tries to shoot the statue, but with the angles being all wrong, he misses both shots.
Koshukhep |
Koshu didn't even thank Izra a second time for her deity's healing grace. Rage was plastered on his dark face at the affrontery of the statue beating Kwin, who had rushed forward only to save the catfolk. With a roar, he leapt at the statue again, swinging wildly. "DIE!"
adamant flail: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
2h dmg: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Booyah! Here's where the statue's head gets to be a baseball (or golfball?), instead of Kwin. Hey, Koshu invented a sport! It's called, "The ball tries to kill you while you try to knock it into a hole." Catfolk aren't good at naming things.
Current AC:21
Torin Ironbeard |
Why in the world do you ordinarily take a penalty to shoot something that's prone? Isn't the implication that it can't move as easily?
Only for ranged attacks, which makes sense. Lower profile and all that.
"Well done Koshu. Let's hope that statue fills our crazy quota for this place."
Kwin Longclaw |
Having slid down the wall to sit on his rump, panting, Kwin watches Koshukhep demolish the statue.
"So much for me leaping to your aid," he says wryly. " 'Well done,' indeed."
Djehuti |
Djehuti shakes his head. "With such a formidable guardian, I assume whatever is beyond is of great value. And hopefully unguarded." He gestures at the statue's quarterstaff. "May I?"
Koshukhep |
"Sekhmet heard me in our time of need," Koshukhep said proudly, picking up the statue's staff and giving it to Djehuti. He appeared to have forgotten Pharasma's role already. Then he came over to help Kwin to his feet.
"I underestimated the enemy at first," he admitted. "I should have been more wary, and saved you this pain. It is a hard lesson to learn."
Kwin Longclaw |
Kwin shakes his head. "My pain was my own doing. I rushed in with no thought to consequences. That's sort of my thing, I guess." Wincing as he gingerly tests his shoulder he adds, "I need to change that."

"It's all yours Djehuti. We healthy enough to push on? I really want to find out who's mucking about in our claim."
If he hears no objections, Torin checks the right doors for traps, etc, Perc: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17 and if it looks safe, he'll motion Koshu to lead on.
Kwin Longclaw |
Kwin works his shoulder again. "I wouldn't turn down some healing, but I'll live. Long as we don't run into another one of those things any time soon."
Djehuti |
"Thank you, friends. Hopefully that was the final defender."
Is there any historical or religious significance to the statue defender? i.e., were they typically deployed in areas of particular significance?
Kwin Longclaw |
Well how conveeeeenient, Kwin just bumped his Disable Device.
With a nod in response to what Torin found, Kwin moves up to the door, pulls out his tool roll...
Disable Device: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
... and after a few moment's work is rewarded with a satisfying click. Quickly re-rolling his tools, he steps aside... out of any presumed line-of-fire.

Kwin picks the lock and opens the doors.
Area D16
Two columns carved to resemble men with their arms crossed over their chests, holding a khopesh in one hand and an ankh in the other, support the ceiling of this long chamber. Deep alcoves in the walls form burial chambers, some of which are sealed with stone doors. Other sepulchers just have sarcophagi tucked inside, while a few appear empty. To the north and south, wide passages exit the room through the east wall, each leading to stone double doors.
A moving corpse appears from an alcove, moans loudly and moves threateningly toward the band.

Kwin Longclaw |
A frown crosses Kwin's face as he looks up from storing his tool roll. "What is with this place! he growls as he tears off towards the new threat. Reaching at first for his short sword, his hand veers at the last moment and he instead brings his rapier to bear.
Rapier: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 Oh come ON!
Or attempts to, as his blade bites naught but air.
And he just said he needs not to act before thinking. Sigh. Not sure I can update the map from here -- if not I'll get it this evening from home -- but he's diagonally "up-left" adjacent to the undead.
Djehuti |
DJ's actually +9 on init now; he gets a +1 every 2 levels so it will keep going up. Not that it would make a difference to the order. Can he ID the undead and/or recognize whether the khopesh-holding statues are guardians like the one outside?

wicked_raygun |
Wow, and you basically had to roll a 20 to get this, since it's super obscure and hard to differentiate from a regular zombie. Seriously this sucker isn't even in one of the bestiaries.
Djehuti is suddenly, inexplicably reminded of an obscure story about a creature called a coffer corpse. A type of undead the feigns death only to later strangle its victims.
They can resist all but bludgeoning and magical attacks.
Djehuti |
"Beware! The corpse is resistant to all but bludgeoning or magical attacks, and will likely feign death to try to strangle you later."
Woohoo, Knowledge skills!
Torin Ironbeard |
"Thanks for the info!"
Torin moves into the room, pulling out a blunted arrow and firing at the creature.

Izra Kayal |
Izra stepped up next to Koshukhep, placed a hand on the catfolk's shoulder, and let Pharasma's guidance flow into the big warrior.
"The blessings of Pharasma guide your arm," she whispered.
"Also, if you can crush its head with your flail, that might be helpful."
That's a 5' step (map updated), cast Guidance on Kosh (+1 competence bonus on a single attack roll, saving throw, or skill check) (Standard Action), and then use her ME to give Combat Advice (+2 competence bonus on next attack roll). They don't stack, but Kosh can pick which roll to use the Guidance bonus on in the next 10 rounds.
Kwin Longclaw |
"What?! I don't do bludgeoning! And I don't know from magic! Great. Just great!"
-Posted with Wayfinder
Kwin Longclaw |
"Oh, I already have one of those," Kwin shouts back to Djehuti as he sheathes his rapier and reaches to pull the quarterstaff from his back. "It just doesn't have any elegance, you know? I can't finesse it the same as a nicely balanced blade!"
Rats, I got bogged down with "the busies" after I posted Kwin's attack, and neglected to move his marker when I got home. I've made a note to do it this evening. Djehuti, he's actually no where near you, instead standing on the square marked "d". So I don't think there'll be any staff swapping. But thanks for the offer! A +1 to hit and damage would have to help. (Or maybe not, considering how bad my rolls can be...)

The coffer corpse takes a direct hit from Ahmed's blunt arrow. It stumbles and falls over prone. Just as Djehuti warned, it seemed to be playing dead.

"Beware! The corpse is resistant to all but bludgeoning or magical attacks, and will likely feign death to try to strangle you later."
"That is... well, I suppose the behavior of the undead is always strange. How do you know such things?" Koshu marveled, peering around the corner at the thing. "There will be no 'later' for it."
"Its fate has been written by Osiris," Koshukhep said, shrugging his shoulders uncomfortably in his hot armor. Swinging his flail over his head, he rushed the undead, surprisingly light on his feet for so large a creature.

Thanks to Nimble Striker, he doesn't take an AC hit when he charges. I'll try and remember the Guidance for next round!

Djehuti dropped his new staff and pulled out his bow and a blunt arrow instead. "I read." He aimed briefly than loosed.

Sorry, job interviews are keeping me busy.
Ahmed nods glumly at Djehuti's advice, feeling useless and cursing his shackles for what felt like the millionth time. Forcing a smile, he looks at Suri. "Little bit of that inner fire, I would think. Our people's spirit flows through you. It will return the dead to where they belong."
casting Guidance as per usual, since Ahmed is worthless at most things.
Suri Kanjariya |
Suri nods, and gives Ahmed a quick kiss on the cheek, her warmth leaving an imprint on his face. "I will burn bright enough for both of us." Moving towards the corpse on the floor, she attempts to attack it, but somehow misses even though it's lying prone.
