DM Haldhin
"No, they are not that close to me or I would feel them. They are inside the prison, and my husband only mentioned a 'safe closet'. Or maybe 'safest closet' - I can't be sure."
"Feel free, it leads into the prison laundry. The workers used it to move between these rooms without having to enter the hallway."
Bjorn Stonehand
"Let's get moving. It sounds like our time, and that of the pretty ghost there, is short. With any luck, dealing with these four will let us learn more about what the damned cult wants down here", the big Northman says.
She could have been an Ulfen woman for how she'd shouldered her husband's burden.
"We'll make sure your husband's life, death, and sacrifice after death weren't vain", Bjorn offers the ghost.
Asha Kahina
"I agree with the big guy, let's get moving. You said the workers used to laundry room to move between places while avoiding the hall. Which rooms does it connect?" While talking Asha moves to the secret door. The prisoners, including the undead ones, probably didn't even know of the place so chances were it would be a safer route.
'Horrible' Harold Grimsley
Harold bows his head at the ghost of the warden's wife, "We'll see deese murderers an' criminals back ter their slumber eternal, miss, then we'll find yaaahr 'usband so yew can be re-united. Dearf ought ter brin' love ones back together, not pull 'em apart." The half-orc lets out a sad sigh as he plods after Asha toward the secret door.
DM Haldhin
Vesorianna bows her head deeply as she begins disappearing, "Thank you, and good luck."
-----
The secret door swings open to reveal several rusty iron tubs sitting in this room along with washboards, metal buckets, and heaps of moldy clothing.
As the group moves into the room, a small pile of clothes in the northeastern corner shifts slightly, drawing everyone's attention.
'Horrible' Harold Grimsley
Harold draws his sword as he nods to Bjorn and proceeds to cautiously step toward the pile of clothes. He extends the curve of his sword to snag under some of the pile and prepares to throw the fabric off whatever is moving under it with a loud yell.
Korvus Slade
Before Harold approaches the pile of clothes, Korvus taps the martial artist with one of his wands and conjures an invisible protective aura about him. Cast Mage Armor on Harold, granting him a +4 armor bonus to AC; since it is made of force, it cannot be bypassed by incorporeal creatures. Charges used: 3/50.
DM Haldhin
Harold tenses his muscles as he prepares to throw the clothing aside. With a loud shout, he flicks his sword and the moldy remnants explode upward.
An empty straitjacket flies up into the air, twisting and writhing around itself, arms flailing wildly. A strangled cry emerges as it tries to wrap itself around Harold.
Because of your preparation, Harold gets an AoO on the straightjacket, then it will get its attack, then we'll go into typical combat rounds.
Please roll initiative and let me know what you want to do. Harold, please also roll an AoO as well as initiative and your first round actions.
Bjorn Stonehand
Bjorn curses loudly as the haunted clothing assaults them.
Init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Korvus Slade
Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Knowledge checks to determine if this is some type of undead or some type of construct.
Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Knowledge (arcana): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
Korvus prepares to cast Grease on Harold if it looks like the straightjacket is about to grapple him.
Korvus' AC: 15
Korvus' HP: 15/15
'Horrible' Harold Grimsley
Harold growls as the jacket flies up to reach for him with its empty sleeves. His sword cuts down at the jacket with a quick snap, trying to slice the fabric in twine.
Sorry guys, had Wingman day all this morning here at work. Lots of 'group bonding' activities going on.
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
AoO Attack, Temple Sword vs straitjacket: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
AoO Damage, Temple Sword vs straitjacket: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Bjorn Stonehand
I thought it was going to act before we did.
Bjorn rushes forward and tries to tear the animated jacket off of the orc.
Grapple: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
'Horrible' Harold Grimsley
Forgot to add normal round actions. If it doesn't grapple me or get through my CMD or doesn't go before me, I'll flurry of blows it. If it grapples, I'll try to counter-grapple and throw it off.
Flurry of Blows Attacks, Temple Sword vs straitjacket: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 41d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Flurry of Blows Damage, Temple Sword vs straitjacket: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 91d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Grapple: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Korthul the Lesser
Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Korthul advances into combat, readying his axe for a powerful downwards blow, but seeing his allies move into close quarters with the haunted restraining device, he decides to wait for the opportune moment to strike, rather than risk hitting one of his allies.
Korthul will move to within 5 feet of the jacket and, seeing as his initiative is quite low, wait and see what other actions take place before striking. If he gets a clean shot with the axe (i.e. no allies grappling with it), he will strike, two-handed.
Attack & Damage: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 91d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Asha Kahina
Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
What Asha does depends on what the jacket does. If it succesfully grapples Harold her actions will change.
If the jacket isn't grappling anyone
Asha pulls the trigger on her pistol. It was just a piece of clothing and she didn't know how much good putting a hole in it would do but it was worth trying.
Attack vs touch 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Assuming the jacket is grappling someone:
Asha tries to get a good aim at the jacket but decides she can't take a shot without risking hurting one of her newfound comrades. Instead she decides to wait and see.
Readying an action to shoot the jacket when the grappled condition ends. Could use the rolls above
DM Haldhin
Round One
20 Asha
18 Harold
12 Alexei
11 Bjorn
09 Korthul
09 Korvus
06 Straitjacket
Harold reflexively lashes out with his sword and manages to tear a long gash across the chest of the jacket.
The jacket lashes out with its arm but fails to connect with the half-orc.
Asha pulls her gun and shoots at the jacket, blowing a hole through the leather.
Harold attacks in a rapid pattern, connecting with one blow on the right arm.
Alexei moves forward and smashes his morningstar down on the jacket, bashing it into the ground and leaving it motionless.
-----
The group looks through the rest of the room but doesn't find anything of value or interest. A doorway to the south leads back into the large area, and toward the staircases.
Sorry for the delay in getting this resolved. This is one of those fights that can either go really well for the characters, as this one did, or go really badly if the jacket manages to grapple a character.
Korvus Slade
"Well done, all. From what I can determine, that straightjacket was possessed by a minor spirit. I suspect the outcome would have been more dire if it had managed to wrap itself around Master Grimsley."
Note: Harold has the benefit of the Mage Armor spell for the next hour. Korvus can renew it when it expires if Harold wishes.
DM Haldhin
The group moves out of the room, leaving the destroyed straitjacket in a crumpled heap on the floor.
Another door to the north leads to a privy. After several seconds, the heroes are able to determine that nothing of interest lies that direction.
Moving forward, the group once again reaches the hallway with stairs leading upward, and a door to the south heading back to the entry vestibule.
Choices at this point are to head up via the stairs or continue exploring this level. If you want to continue on this level, there are two options, both leading east. A set of double doors heads northeast, while a single wooden door opens to a long hallway leading due east.
DM Haldhin
Opening the double doors, you see several rows of wooden benches, all spotted with mold and sagging with neglect. The benches face a stage separated from the rest of the room by a wall of iron bars.
Another set of double doors lies across the room.
Please let me know if/when you want to proceed into this room
Bjorn Stonehand
Bjorn grunts in growing concern as the temperature falls and then rises again.
He starts undoing the stopper on his siphon as he nods towards Harold and then to the dark hole in the floor.
'Horrible' Harold Grimsley
Harold tugs his jacket tighter at the sudden temperature shift as he trudges into the ravaged training room, "Mit' chilly". He nods to Bjorn as he slips his sword free again, carefully circling around toward the dark hole in the floor. The half-orc creeps slowly toward the edge, trying to get a good view of what lies below without falling in due to rotting, damaged floorboards.
Acrobatics (if needed): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
DM Haldhin
This cavernous chamber may have once been an underground cellblock, but it has long since collapsed. The crumbled walls are thick with mold and stained with soot, and heaps of fallen stones and charred wooden beams line the area. Water drips and seeps along the walls, collecting in a dark, murky pool in the middle of the room. To the north, the twisted remains of a wood and iron lift lie in a heap in a shallow portion of the pool. A jagged hole in the roof yawns twenty feet above this ruin. To the west, a partially blocked opening seems to open up after several feet into a dark but stable tunnel.
Korvus Slade
As he crosses the room with his companions, Korvus shivers as he passes through the area of unnatural chill. Once beyond the chilly spot, the half-orc wizard pauses and turns to study the area, casting the minor spell that allows him to perceive magical auras. Casts Detect Magic to study the chilled area.
Korvus Slade
"Master Stonehand? It appears as if you have stepped in something," Korvus calls out to his Ulfen companion. "You are leaving bloody footprints wherever you step."
Alexei Dawnreach
Sighing quietly, Alexei begins a different incantation and series of gestures, before tapping his shield with his right hand, causing it to illuminate the room. He steps towards the hole in the floor, shield held forward like a torch.
Alexei casts Light on his Shield.
Bjorn Stonehand
Bjorn points at Harold and is about to say something when Korvus speaks up.
"What's that?" he asks as he looks down.
DM Haldhin
Bjorn Stonehand
"I don't see anything", the Ulfen grunts in confusion.
Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Korvus Slade
"I don't see anything", the Ulfen grunts in confusion.
"Can't you see them? They're getting larger. Why, blood's flowing all over the floor!" Korvus exclaims, his voice rising in alarm.
