The Tomb of Caragthax (Inactive)

Game Master TheRiverOcean

The ruthless warlord, Caragthax the Reaver, is known only in fragments of history. It is said that he terrorized many kingdoms with his horde of barbaric clansmen, raping and pillaging for many decades. The people lived in fear of his name and when the thunderous hooves of his horde's approach came, entire villages fled before his butcher’s blade.

1 to 50 of 129 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

This adventure takes place in ancient Ustalav during a time of peace and prosperity under Princess Carmina Ustav. This golden age is hundreds of years before the Whispering Tyrant’s name would be conceived.

Princess Carmina herself has issued an open quest to the Shudderwood region all the way from the capital in Ardis. She believes a great warlord of ages past was buried somewhere in the region. She seeks evidence that the evil butcher of legend, Caragthax, truly existed. She seeks tomb rubbings from the walls of his crypt, or even better, actual artifacts that once belonged to the infamous Reaver. The princess and historian has offered a 10,000 gp reward for such evidence, as she is chronicling the history of the area in a new book.

You come across the tiny village of Greenbarrow after combing the Shudderwood for many months fruitlessly. In a panic, the villagers beg you for help as you gather supplies. A young girl named Casidora has gone missing. Her trail leads to the crest of one of the many barrow hills that dot the local landscape. Casidora, a very brave and foolishly curious young girl, went to explore the mound and fell into a sinkhole. They don’t have much money, but plead with you for her safe return.

Character Creation:

-5th Level
-Core classes highly encouraged. No gunslinger, only tasteful 3pp considered. This is a classic adventure, so I’d like to protect the flavor.
-Core races highly encouraged. See above
-HP max at 1st level, then average
-2 traits, be creative please ;)
-Starting 1st Level average goldx2 to outfit yourself, your gear will matter ;)
-2 Random Magic Items. Roll 2d100, use This table for both random items. Once you have the item type, then roll a d100 for each magic item on it's page using the 'minor' or 'lesser minor' table. If you get a wand or scroll, congratulations, you may choose the spell after rolling for the spell level.
-20 point buy OR 4d6 drop low, low rolls will benefit from Fate bonuses, see below
-This is designed to be deadly, be emotionally and physically prepared
-Character aspect, see below.

We will be using Fate Points and Character Aspects

Fate:

A concise punchy sentence describing your character.
Character Aspects represent a character’s history, relations, values, personality quirks, general descriptors, important objects and character flaws.
Examples:
OK: ”Fire Wizard”
GOOD: ”Expelled Apprentice of Fire”
AWESOME: ”Burn Scarred Reject from the Order of the Emerald Flame”

You begin with 3 Fate points, and refresh spent points with each gained level. You may also gain Fate by acting according to your Character Aspect in times it would be detrimental to yourself or your goals at GM approval.

Spending Fate points:
1 Reroll a d20 taking the new result.
1 Keep a d20 roll and add +1d6 to the result.
1 Add +1d6 to a defense such as AC, CMD, Toughness or a Static Save Defense for one round
1 Roll a new save vs. an ongoing effect at the beginning of your turn.
1 Ignore one of the following debilitating conditions for one round; blinded, confused, dazzled, deafened, fascinated, frightened, nauseated, panicked, paralyzed, shaken, sickened or stunned.
1 Gain the benefits of a feat for one round (the character must meet all prerequisites.)
1 Activate a class ability with a limited number of uses per day.
1 Automatically stabilize.
special: Create a story effect.
special: cheat death

You man only spend your Fate points in a way that invokes your Character Aspect.
Example Invocation:
A wizard has rolled poorly on a Scortching Ray and missed.
”I’m a 'Burn Scarred Reject from the Order of the Emerald Flame', no way I would miss with FIRE MAGIC! I’ll spend a Fate point to reroll!”
GM: But of course! Make it rain!

Feel free to ask questions and enjoy!

Silver Crusade

just clarifying, you have listed that we start at 5th level yet its says gold is average for level 1? is this correct?

Yep, 1st level x 2, eg Fighter gets 5d6 x 10 gp (average 175gp.) 175x2=350gp

You're a bit gp starved, adding to the hard survival aspect. Good luck on your random magic items however!

Silver Crusade

i was thinking about a paladin but would that suit this type of campaign? if not i was thinking of a slayer

Paladin is a phenomenal fit for this campaign =)

Silver Crusade

sorry just another question, is it max hp or average hp per level?

It's cool. HP max at first level, then average.

Silver Crusade

almost got my character done. just trying to work out the magic items.

Magic items: 2d100 ⇒ (87, 77) = 164

im not clear on the part where you say roll another 1d100 to see if its major or minor ect.

wouldn't these numbers mean 1 x minor wand and 1x major wand?

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

So, random items:

Random Items: 2d100 ⇒ (99, 75) = 174 Wondrous Item, Scroll

Wondrous Item: 1d100 ⇒ 78 Slotless Item
Slotless Item: 1d100 ⇒ 8 I am unsure if this should be: Unguent of Timelessness, Boro Bead (1st), or Page of Spell Knowledge (2nd)

Scroll: 1d100 ⇒ 95 2nd spell level, 3rd caster level

How about for those stats:

Strength: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 3) = 13 - 12
Dexterity: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 6, 1) = 17 - 16
Constitution: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1, 5) = 17 - 16
Intelligence: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 1) = 10 - 9
Wisdom: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 6, 4) = 20 - 16
Charisma: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 2) = 11 - 10

Silver Crusade

nevermind i figured it out

wand minor: 1d100 ⇒ 36 = 1st lvl spell

wand major: 1d100 ⇒ 55 = 3rd lvl spell

I interpret your rolls as saying you would have a: Wand (87) and a Scroll (77) respectively

If you then took your next two rolls in order, I think you'd get:

36 - 1st level wand

55 - 2nd level scroll

But that's just how I interpret things.

What exactly is considered tasteful? I have classes based in the divine power of blood, herbalism, and specially crafted alcohols. And no the blood is not about ritual sacrifice, it's more about bleed damage taking some constitution damage for powerful effects, and some spellcasting

I am interested in joining in. This is Rennai, my fifth level dwarf ranger, exiled for her family's sins and seeking revenge against the children of Urgathoa (undead). A question: she was created for another campaign with a stat array of 16,15,14,12,11,10 before racial and 4th level bonuses - will this work, or will I need to reroll/rebuy scores? It's two points off of a twenty-point buy.

Magic item rolls:

First random magical item: 1d100 ⇒ 18 -> Potion
-Potion type: 1d100 ⇒ 95 -> Resist energy (fire) 10

Second random magical item: 1d100 ⇒ 75 -> Wondrous item
-Wondrous item type: 1d100 ⇒ 52 -> Neck slot
-Specific wondrous item: 1d100 ⇒ 3 -> Hand of the mage

Ooh, ick, question: can I either a) spend a fate point to re-roll the type of the neck slot item, or b) re-flavor it to avoid it being a mummified hand? It's a character aspect thing - she's got a kill-it-with-a-hail-of-arrows level problem with anything even hinting of undeath, so she wouldn't be terribly keen on wearing a mummified hand everywhere.

Dotting for interest

magic items: 2d100 ⇒ (18, 24) = 42 so 2 potions?

magic items: 2d100 ⇒ (3, 11) = 14 A cure light wounds potion and an endure elements potion?

Not even sure if I did that right or according to what you meant.

oh right stats, because that is the fun way.
stats: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 4) = 15 12
stats: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6, 3) = 16 14

Interesting idea. I dig!

Stat roll: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 1, 2) = 15 = 14
Stat roll: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 2, 5) = 13 = 12

Hmm, nice array.

Magic Items: 1d100 ⇒ 79 = Scroll
Magic Items: 1d100 ⇒ 97 = Wondrous Item

Scroll: 1d100 ⇒ 92 = 2nd level spell, 3rd level caster
Wondrous item: 1d100 ⇒ 31 = Hands
Hands Item: 1d100 ⇒ 31 = Gloves of Reconnaissance

Nice! I'm leaning toward a Bard or perhaps some sort of Rogue mix.

It seems I could fit some of my chars here! I like "Deadly". Plus I might get a chance to play with my current GM Tech :)

First Magic Item: 1d100 ⇒ 89

First Magic Item (Wand): 1d100 ⇒ 18

Spell Level 1, Caster Level 1 Wand. Let's see our second magic item.

Second Magic Item: 1d100 ⇒ 61

Second Magic Item (Scroll): 1d100 ⇒ 83

Spell Level 2, Caster Level 3 Scroll... Ok we can probably play with it :)

Let's see them stats:

Stat Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 1, 5) = 10 -> 9
Stat Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5, 5) = 13 -> 12
Stat Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 4, 3) = 13 -> 12
Stat Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 2) = 11 -> 10
Stat Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 5, 2) = 12 -> 10
Stat Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 1) = 10 -> 9

Not sure I'd be able to build much with those stats... Terrible huh!

@ Zahir ibn Mahmoud ibn Jothan Sorry that's confusing, you may choose either Ungent of Timelessness, or Boro Bead

@Tech5BB 87=Wand 77=Scroll. 36 on Wand is 1st level spell on the wand, cast at caster level 1. 55 on the scroll is a 2nd level spell on the scroll, cast at caster level 3rd.

@Korak The Boisterous Those are fine. I meant wacky things like an Aasimar Eldrich Goding or a nanite infused psionic android.

@Rennai Barzanslag In the interest of fairness I'd prefer you adjust your stats for 20 pt buy, or reroll. haha and yes, seeing as how you hate undead, you may reflavor the severed hand, but not reroll as Fate points are an in-game mechanic.

@DoubleGold Yep, thats right =)

@James Martin nice items! And great Character Aspect =)

@adsapiens that's rough buddy. I'll let you know how we can mitigate low stat rolls in my next post, using a combination of bonus fate, more ways to earn fate, and another unique ideas involving further dumping stats to raise others, and taking specific disadvantages rather than negative penalties. In the meantime it would behoove you to think of character aspects that represent your poor scores.

Dark Archive

Thanks Ocean, but I find it unlikely that I could create something to give me at least some interest. I thank you for the consideration, though.

In the interest of fair play, I think I'll be making a Sanguine disciple, and one of their class features is a Sanguine Relic, a masterwork weapon. Is this a problem?

stat roll: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 3) = 14 12

stat roll: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 3, 4) = 9 8

stat roll: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 6, 6) = 15 14

stat roll: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 6, 2) = 12 10

stat roll: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 4, 3) = 14 12

stat roll: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 1, 5) = 18 17

Do you allow the Variant Multiclass System from Unchained?

And would you allow the Giant Bloodline by Kobold Press? My basic idea is a Goliath Druid who hits things really, really hard.

You really wanna play that Goliath Druid don't you Jon? And speaking of Unchained, will we be using the background skills system?

Yeah, I like that idea. I'm also trying to get an intelligence based fighter into a game, but I'm bugging Rednal for that one.

Also!

4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 5, 2) = 13 - 11
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 5) = 15 - 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 1) = 12 - 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 6) = 23 - 18
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 1) = 18 - 17
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 1, 5) = 15 - 14

I can work with that.

Here is the profile with the crunch done.

Im working on the back story and character aspect atm.

btw for my magical items i took a wand of CLW and a scroll of Endure Elements Communal.

Sounds fair on both counts. It's now a silver charm in the shape of a hand instead.

Stats:
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 1, 1) = 12 = 11 = 13 Constitution
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 2, 5) = 16 = 14 = 16 Wisdom
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 1) = 12 = 11 = 11 Intelligence
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 3, 5) = 13 = 11 = 9 Charisma
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5, 5) = 18 = 16 = 16 Dexterity
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 4) = 16 = 14 = 14 Strength

Ok, it's workable. The stats in the sidebar are readjusted, and I'll change the statblock later.

@adsapiens fair enough, thats the way it goes with risking the dice unfortunately =/

Korak The Boisterous wrote:

A quick search didn't reveal what that class or relic was, do you have a link by chance?

@Korak @Jon Yes, I need to learned the Unchained stuff, so background skill variant is available to those that would like to invest in learning it. I don't want to allow the variant multiclass, as I don't want another character's niche or ability to lose its uniqueness.

@Jon That bloodine looks fine to me! Hehehe It'll be fun to see your character go through this dungeon because of... reasons... hehehee

@Sir Gregor looking good! Excellent choices. Make sure you keep track of the wand uses.

@Rennai looks good

Prospective Players! Please don't roll your stats unless you're willing to play a low stat character! Restrictions breed creativity, and I will give you fate bonuses. Take the point buy if you wanna be safe! Thanks!

Sound like a fun challenge! How long is recruitment open? It may take me a couple of days to work up a full character.

1st Magic item: 1d100 ⇒ 4 = Armor/Shield
Special material: 1d100 ⇒ 12 = No
Magical property: 1d100 ⇒ 25 = +1

2nd Magic item: 1d100 ⇒ 36 = Potion
Spell/caster level: 1d100 ⇒ 42 = 1/1

Hmm, magical armor eh? Perhaps not the arcane caster I was originally envisioning...

I understand the table and the d100s, but which table are we to use, minor medium or major?

TheRiverOcean wrote:
Once you have the item type, then roll a d100 for each magic item on it's page using the 'minor' or 'lesser minor' table

I assumed that meant we also use the "minor" table for the first roll.

Well, that's totally not foreboding or anything...my poor character is about to be eaten by a Grue or something.

Since I can use the Bloodline but not the VMC, looks it's Eldritch Heritage for me.

Korak The Boisterous wrote:

wall of text on the sanguine Relic:
Sanguine Relic: A sanguine disciple begins play with a sanguine relic, which is a bonded masterwork martial weapon of his choice. The chosen weapon must be a weapon with which he is proficient. The sanguine disciple may enhance his sanguine relic as though he had the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat, but can only increase the weapon's enhancement bonus or add one of the following weapon special abilities: bane, called, cruel, deadly, fervent, flaming, flaming burst, heartseeker, huntsman, igniting, impact, keen, lifesurge, mighty cleaving, nullifying, ominous, vicious, vorpal, or wounding. A sanguine relic cannot be enhanced by any means other than this class feature. Whenever the sanguine disciple enhances his sanguine relic's enhancement bonus or adds weapon special

abilities, he may choose to sacrifice weapons whose enhancements' market value meets or exceeds 150% of the market value of that which he wishes to add to his relic. This is done instead of crafting in the traditional sense. For example, if the disciple wished to add keen to
his +2 scythe, an increase in market value of 10,000 gp, he could sacrifice eight +1 daggers, each with an enhancement market value of 2,000 gp, for a total of 16,000 gp. As this meets or exceeds 150% of the market value of the new enhancement to his scythe, 15,000 gp,
this is a legal sacrifice. Sacrificing weapons to enhance a sanguine relic is a ritual that requires 8 hours of work. Sacrificed weapons are not destroyed, but are rather stripped of their magic and left as masterwork. A sanguine disciple may not craft magic items on the same day he sacrifices to a sanguine relic. A sanguine disciple may choose to change his sanguine relic at any time. To do so, he chooses another nonmagical masterwork martial weapon with which he is proficient to be his new relic, then performs a 24 hour ritual that consumes diamond dust worth 25% of the market value of the enhancements he added to his
previous sanguine relic using this class feature. At the conclusion of the ritual, the new sanguine relic gains the enhancement bonus and weapon special abilities of the old sanguine relic, while the old sanguine relic shrivels up and is destroyed. If any weapon special abilities transferred in this way are illegal targets for the new
sanguine relic, such as ranged weapon special abilities being transferred to a melee weapon, they still transfer, but grant the weapon no benefit. This ability functions if the old sanguine relic is no longer in the disciple's possession, and even if it has already been destroyed. The blood remembers.

2d100 ⇒ (5, 34) = 39 = +1 weapon which since I got it I would like to use as my sanguine relic

2d100 ⇒ (75, 64) = 139 And I'm guessing I have a scroll with a 2nd level spell at caster level 3

m/m/m: 1d100 ⇒ 47
Item 1: 1d100 ⇒ 56 medium scroll

m/m/m: 1d100 ⇒ 80
Item 2: 1d100 ⇒ 8 major weapon
How do i know if it's a greater or a lesser major magic weapon? roll for it too?

4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 5) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 2) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 1, 6) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 1, 4) = 9 8
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 6) = 23 18
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 5) = 22 17

Not bad at all =^^=

now i see.... its because i added the level roll for the scroll it messed up my rolls

@Irondesk Recruitment will be open through the weekend. Also, potions use the specific table, your potion is 42 - Enlarge Person

@Korak Magic items use minor tables

@Jon If it's a character you've been wanting to build but haven't had the chance, I'll allow you to use VMC

@Krovak interesting ability. I'll allow it, against my better judgement. ;) Yes you can use that as your relic. Your magic items are correct

@Seth86 You actually got 2 scrolls, One 1st level spell, CL 1, One 2nd level spell, CL 3.

too late to join? i'm keen, especially the deadly bit - been playing PFS and it never seems to be that scary.

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 6) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 1, 4) = 10 9
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 1) = 10 9
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 1, 5) = 8 7
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 1, 4) = 10 9
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 2, 6) = 17 15
OMG i've just realised need to drop the lowest from those stats rolls - bad! geez how many 1's!

magic items
1d100 ⇒ 55
1d100 ⇒ 71

looks like it needs to be a SAD character!
2 scrolls
1d100 ⇒ 79
1d100 ⇒ 21

with a 2nd level scroll and a 1st level scroll - boo.

Now im lost... meh. Its confusing

But weapon is 8 is it not

Though i do get its only lesser or minor.

Ps. Busy day. Long trip ahead. Might have something tonight

Looks like fun game.

4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 1, 1) = 7 - 6
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 3, 4) = 12 - 11

4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 6, 3) = 14 - 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 1, 1) = 4 - 3 OH... OK

those are interesting abilities. I think it will be fun to make a character with them.

magic item 1: 1d100 ⇒ 70
magic item 2: 1d100 ⇒ 60
both scrolls

magic item 1: 1d100 ⇒ 81 = 2nd
magic item 2: 1d100 ⇒ 24 = 1st

All right, Rennai should be ready to go. I've tentatively taken Trap Finder as a trait (working as a trapper, she's gained some skill with complex mechanical traps) so I can potentially act as a rogue-ish, but if you'd rather I take a different trait, or if we get a real trapfinder, I'll be happy to trade it out for something else. (I know some people have issues with taking it since it's a campaign trait, but it fits her, and it helps fill a party niche.)

Scarab Sages

This sounds quite interesting and I have to roll the dice and see what I get. :)
Wondrous Item: 2d100 ⇒ (84, 12) = 96 Wand and potion
Wand: 1d100 ⇒ 59 1st level, CL1
Potion: 1d100 ⇒ 80 2nd level, CL3

Stats
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 4) = 18 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 3, 1) = 15 14
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5, 1) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 4) = 21 17
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 4) = 18 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 5, 2) = 17 15

Wow, well with stats like that I can't not do something MAD. What I'm thinking is building towards a Champion of Irori prestige class, but given that this is level 5, it would be Monk 3/Paladin 2. I'm assuming here this adventure will span more than one level though.

Okay, that's it, it's been driving me crazy and I never asked. What is MAD?

Multiple-ability dependent, as opposed to SAD, which is single-ability dependent. Think monk vs. oracle.

I don't want to talk about how long it took me to figure it out. :/

Huh. Don't know the Oracle well but I'll check it out, thanks.

My class type.
Ranged fighter

Just want to know what level this thing goes to?
That will make a difference in build :) and obviously story.

They're basically divine sorcerers. They can get by with almost nothing but Charisma - there's a revelation that can give CHA to AC, a feat to give CHA to all saves...if optimized, they're the epitome of SAD.

Also very flavorful and fun, I prefer them over clerics.

I tend towards arcane and sneaky myself, but a lot of my current favorite concepts are martials. Hell the class I'm using has spell casting built from con. Given the martial bent I never have to dip into mental stats for anything but story.

Absolutely Interested!!!
Lets see what the dice have to say first...
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 2, 6) = 1715
