Áine nods, "We should cleanse it, once we've finished investigating." she says.
"No argument from me," Faith says. He looks at the iron-fanged skull with the ring on the bottom. "I think that's Zura," he says. "A ... doorknocker?"
Faith says "No," very quickly. Then he frowns for a moment. "I take that back. I think I was probably close to death several times when I was younger. I just didn't realize it at the time."
"I was an ice fisher. Still am, if the opportunity presents. Not the safest pastime."
Faith drums his fingers against the tattoo on his cheek as he ponders. "I wouldn't say I've been terribly close to death here, either. Not as close as Sasha or Aerys has been. Or Gelik when he came down with fever."
"What about you? Your profession strikes me as similarly dangerous. Except that people are sneaky about wanting to kill an investigator. Have you been near death before?"
"The fish is my favorite," Faith says. "Even now. It's been years since I had it, but sometimes I dream of it. It was worth all the work."
Faith looks sad when Pakshee talks about her home with no people. He only winces a little as he thinks about the cannibals -- probably Pakshee's relatives -- he personally killed. "Leaving home is hard," he says. "But that is a future which may never come."
"When it gets very cold, water turns hard -- like a rock. You can stand on it, walk across it. It will kill you if are not protected from it. It happens for almost half the year where I come from. But some places -- like here -- it never happens."
Faith puts his hand on his chin and ponders. He squeezes Pakshee briefly and then lets go.
"Is there something you have never done but would like to do? I would like to do something nice for you. It may not be within my power to grant today. But it may be tomorrow."
"I always wondered if the drinking came first or the philosophizing," Faith says. "But clerics have a natural rivalry with non-religious philosophers. Kind of like gnomes and giants, but less stabbing and crushing. Usually."
"The rumors about this island that are true are bad enough." Faith ponders. "But we have taken care of the cannibals and most of the undead -- I hope."
"If we want to keep people away from our tropical paradise, maybe we need to invent new rumors?"
Faith loses a pip to the ground. A second. A third. "Maybe these pomegranates are cursed."
He scowls fiercely at the pomegranates.

When he sits up himself, "Race you to the water?" Her green gaze playful, her body still relaxed, mostly.

"I am sure it lives out in the great ocean somewhere," Faith says. "I only knew where to find it under the ice in the winter time."
He climbs to his feet. "I think I know where this waterfall is." He smiles at Pakshee. "I would be delighted to swim with you. Leaving my shell behind on the grass."
Faith gives Aerys an appraising look. "If we do come to blows over philosophy, I hope it's not in a contest of pithing."
And a pip tries to squirt free, but Faith catches it before it can hit the ground. "Hah! Got you!" he says to the pip.

"Listen, Faith. I've been meaning to ask you about Pakshee. How is that going?" Zaine pauses. "Actually, what's going on there?"
Faith Dagger |
Faith is happy to swim with Pakshee in the river under the waterfall. As promised, he leaves armor, clothing, weapons in the grass by the shore. He does wear the Ring of Swimming.
Faith shrugs. "I am happy to listen to debates about Truth-with-a-capital-T. But sometimes they go on long enough to strain my eyes from all the rolling."
She reaches over and nabs a pip that hid in his hair
"A counter-attack! Thank you for saving me." Faith shakes his head in disbelief -- and to dislodge any more pips that might be hiding.
"Blackberries and cheese, that's a good pairing. I bow to your expertise." Faith dips his head to Aerys. "Not sure I've seen any beehives. I will look for bees next time I am out, and attempt to follow them home."
He turns his gaze earthward, and looks Zaine in the eyes. "We are having sex. If that is what you're asking about." A beat. "How are things with you and Sasha? I notice you are off together frequently, it seems you have a common interest."

A momentary thought, she looks up the beach, making sure both of Zaine's weapons are not out where they will get wet. He gathers her back up in his arms. She can feel him, beneath the water, ready for another round, though he's apparently content to cuddle. "Then let's stay here for the time being."

Faith pounds Zaine on the back. "Out with it, lad. Drowning on dry land's a terrible way to go."
Faith nods at Zaine's question. "If we leave this island, she is coming too. She says staying here alone would drive her mad."
"I am glad to hear that you and Sasha like other. Is Tulip jealous?"
Farmer's voice takes a slightly more serious tone. "Zaine.... I know you and Tulip can take care of yourselves. I recognize the tattoo on Sasha's back, and those people are bad news. If we get off this island, and if her past comes looking for her...."
"You won't need to ask. I'm in if you need me."
Faith snorts back a laugh. "It all seems so far away from here. It could be tomorrow. Could be never."

As Arcadia returns to normal, Zaine asks "You okay?"
"I am, I think. Thank you."
Sasha pulls out a half empty waterskin, "That couldn't have tasted good."
Arcadia takes the offered waterskin with a polite nod of her head. "I've tasted worse, but this one felt... wrong. And dark." She sips the water, hands it back.

After everyone goes through the contents of the drawer, she holds a hand up. "So, we still have a few places we haven't poked around in yet. Are we interested in doing so, or should we quit the place and put it behind us? We still have an abnormally large urchin to attend to, as well."

Faith watches Áine copying down tunes. "I can prepare Comprehend Languages tomorrow and come back and we can get all of it translated," he offers.
Faith doesn't make a big deal about it, but after watching Pakshee swim, he stakes out a spot between the basin and the danger zones.
Faith wraps his arms around her waist and grins. He is clearly pleased to see her happy. "Best waterfall on the island," he says.
"Where there are flowers, there are usually bees," Faith says. He watches her finish the pithing.
"Unnerving is a good word for it," Faith says. "But next time will be less so. And I will have the presence of mind to give you a feast in your dreams." He shakes his head. "I would not like to fall into a trance like that. I have respect for those who bear a burden I would not."
And, more quietly, "You are welcome."
"Do you need a hand hauling these to the storehouse?"

She's also much cleaner.
"Then..." she shakes her head, "On second thought, I don't want it in the hut until it goes into the cask." She looks around, "I think we could spare a bit of the sail cloth to make a covered area for it in the grove, better juju for the yeast there, I think." It's clear from her face she is remembering what used to be in the storage hut.

Faith holds up under her weight, only riding a little lower as he treads water. He puts his hand to his chin and pretends to think. "Hmmm," he says. "So many possibilities."
He puts his hands on her hips, kicking a little harder to compensate. "Are you ticklish" He runs his fingers up the sides of her ribcage to check.
"Mm," Faith grunts. "Good call. If we didn't need the storage hut, I would burn it down and build a new one somewhere else. Bad juju indeed."
Faith has a bit of trouble finding a good rhythm. Too hard and it splashes. Too soft and the pips don't pulp. "Even in death, they mock me," he sighs, still trying to match Aerys' juicing rhythm.

"Count me along with those who want to explore the rest of this place," Zaine says. Tulip squawks. "Her too."

Faith ponders the question as they carry the bucket. "That's a good question," he says eventually. "My answer is a little bit cheating, though. When a The Answer is no longer my The Answer. Find a new one. That's nice in theory. In practice, I have been following the path of Vildeis for decades. Even considering finding a new path...."
He gives Aerys a wry look. "It would be like a shipwrecked sailor on this island -- the sea so close yet inaccessible."
Then he goes back to watching where he is going.
"Each something is different," Faith shrugs.
"Twelve?" Faith looks impressed. "At age twelve, I was sneaking off to ice-fish when I should have been studying. When you get to be my age, you're going to be amazing. Or dead. Possibly both."

"At least you can still fish here." She shakes her head, quietly, "I know we are just doing what we need to survive here, but..." she looks at the area around, "it feels almost like a honeytrap."
She leans forward, brushing a kiss at the pulse beneath his ear, her words almost lost in thunder, "Time with you, Zaine, is a gift to me, too."
Faith Dagger |
Faith's smile melts away. "If you didn't like that, then I won't do it again. I apologize."
He continues to tread water.
Faith stops.
"It does feel like a honey trap! Fishing. Swimming. Just enough undead to kill that I feel like I'm doing Vildeis' work."
Faith resumes walking, shaking his head. "I'm not that important in the grand scheme ... but that's quite an insight. You are a poet-philosopher."
He gives Aerys the side-eye, then breaks into a grin again. "We can still be friends. I'm magnanimous that way."
chavamana |
"Don't worry, when I can sail again I'll go back to being just a poet and leave the philosophy to those who don't have to work to survive." She find a sheltered level place for the bucket and starts to string the piece of sail above it, "But traditionally the mead makers are philosophers or priest." She looks at him deadpan, "If I don't do this, the wine will come out bad."

"Should I tell you, or would you like to hunt for the spot?"
"A philosopher and a priest, working together and arguing about Truth? It's going to be amazing wine."

"What can you tell us about it?" Faith asks. "Other than it has a weirdly descriptive name?"
"Not much. It's a mass of eyes, mouths, and formless flesh that stares in all directions at once. Its countless maws yammer ceaselessly, causing confusion in anyone within hearing, and it consumes any flesh and blood it comes in contact with." she begins hunting around for cotton, finally settling on her bandanna and strips of cloth to try and muffle the sound. She makes sure everyone is ready before opening the latch.
A few days later, say three, if Áine returns to the area, there are two rough shapes like she indicated, upsidedown so water wouldn't pool inside during the daily rain - not a single toolmark - although the wood looks a little denser than what Áine has seen of most koa.
Aycenia is no where in sight, or hearing.
Áine looks over the dryads work, smiles. She touches a nearby tree, "thank you" she says simply. She tries lifting what will eventually be the bow of one of the hulls to get a feel of the weight and surveys the land. will it be easier to get back to the camp or down to a beach?

"Alchemy is all about shortcuts, but there's really no good replacement for handling food and wine properly."
She seats herself nearby. "Something you dabbled in before the wreck made shabby messes of us all?"
Arcadia chuckles. "Because I can is a perfectly acceptable reason for doing most things, I approve. Even more so, because you promised." She tilts her head. "I feel like alchemy is a little bit of a cheat, a shortcut, for something like this. But I'm happy to lend my hands in the work."
"Do you often converse with Aycenia?"
Is our flex done, or did I miss a post?
After the events of the Temple of Blood wrap up and the group finds themselves safely back at camp, Zaine would likely find Arcadia in the lab, already tinkering with something or another with a frown on her face.
"You think you're ready for something, you think you're prepared, then you're dealing with skeletons who don't give a whit about your poisoned blades." She says it mostly to herself, but it's clear she's talking to whoever entered the lab behind her.
She turns around. "At least now I know what I've been missing by choosing to investigate on my own, rather than joining the larger group. It's not a mistake I'll make again." She grins.

He steps out onto the beach, arms out, letting the sun dry him for a few long moments. Tulip comes out to greet him, and he pets the t-rex's head affectionately, leaning in close and murmuring a few words for the beast's hearing alone. Then he pats her on the flank and follows her up the sand.
When Sasha comes out of the water, he'll watch her, and just the sight of her nude form is enough to provoke a reaction in him. "Sorry," he says. "Don't think I'm ever going to get used to the sight of you. Don't think I want to."

Since she doesn't hide it from Faith, he knows that it was hidden in a secret compartment in the wall behind the bed in the room she uses.

In the stone lighthouse proper there are the following rooms: The beacon room at the top, the cannibal bedroom where Pakshee lives right below, and on the bottom floor: entrance room, a storage room that has been retrofitted with a comfortable bed, and a temple to the Thunefang.
Faith says to Pakshee, "چقدر بد است؟ آوردن بز؟ آوردن اژدها"
Pakshee considers then quickly, "اژدها باید صحیح باشد، او دارای یک درخت درخت است. کوزه بز و بز ... بز کوهی خوب خواهد بود."
When Wynnstan comes striding in, Pakshee firmly puts Faith between her and the doppelganger of the former chief. Glaring daggers at the man, she says decidedly to Faith, "هر کس دیگری در اتاق ما خوب است. حتی بز ها اما نه او"

"That'll work," Zaine says to Faith, and sets about unrolling his bedroll in the dry spot. He pats Tulip's head. "Don't worry, girl. Just a bit of thunder. You'll be fine."
When Sasha reminds him, Zaine grins. "Less a gift to Faith and more a gift to everyone. Sasha and I collected oysters for dinner. Should be a nice treat while we batten down the hatches, as it were."

Faith scrubs his hands and arms as best he can with sand. "Hmmm," he says eventually. "No worse than working with compost. And a lot tastier when it accidentally gets in your mouth."
Life at the Lighthouse - The Storm
Faith is counting people off as they arrive at the lighthouse. To Aerys he says, "Storage room has a bed, Pakshee has offered space in her room, beacon room is at the top."
When Wynnstan comes in, Faith offers a wan smile. "As the lady says. There is space for you on the ground floor."
To Pakshee: "من کلوچه دارم آیا فضای تخت بسیار کم است؟"
"I have hammock. Is room on bed if space is tight?"
When Sasha reminds him, Zaine grins. "Less a gift to Faith and more a gift to everyone. Sasha and I collected oysters for dinner. Should be a nice treat while we batten down the hatches, as it were."
Faith starts to say something, then thinks better of it.

She bites her lips, green eyes determined, then smiles, "If I'm not wearing underwear, you can't take them off." She says this as if she is making a very strong argument.
To Aerys he says, "Storage room has a bed, Pakshee has offered space in her room, beacon room is at the top."
Aerys looks around, "I'm going to finish dripping out there, pointing to the anteroom, and I'll see what's open after."
When Wynnstan comes in, Faith offers a wan smile. "As the lady says. There is space for you on the ground floor."
The con man immediately starts for the room with a bed until he hears about the oysters, then he is all about being sociable - though he gives Pakshee a wide berth.
To Pakshee: "من کلوچه دارم آیا فضای تخت بسیار کم است؟"
"شما می خواهید من با شخص دیگری بخوابید در حالی که همه شما تنها در یک حمور هستید؟" Pakshe asks pointedly.
