DM RyckyRych |
With his first punch Varis takes down the animated armor! Looks like to me you moved 5' too far, isn't your move 45'?
Fergus!
DM RyckyRych |
No, the original map is 10' squares but I've got it to where the Roll20 grid lines up and each Roll20 box is 5'. I think you went 5' too far as I have shown on the map now with text.
DM RyckyRych |
Still waiting on Fergus (I know he said he would be working this weekend) then we'll continue!
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus will move over to the apparatus on the western wall and, without standing directly in front of the arrow hole, try to disable the trap, physically break it, or jam something into the hole if possible to prevent arrows from firing out.
Really not sure what to roll here. I'll just roll a 20 and let you decide what modifiers to add or subtract.
FWIW, my saving throws are STR+4, DEX+0, INT-1, WIS+0, CHA+3. Trained in Athletics, Insight, Perception, Intimidation, and Persuasion, so +2 to those rolls.
1d20 ⇒ 2 HAH! After all that...
DM RyckyRych |
After a few moments the party realizes that the apparati in the walls were likely triggered by the fleeing orc via a pressure plate in the floor. Fergus can see that there is some sort of panel on the wall but since he does not possess the skills required to do something with the panel he tries to sunder the apparatus! However, he fails to damage it, perhaps being unsure when it would fire again... which is now!
Fergus: 8d20 ⇒ (14, 17, 13, 1, 16, 15, 18, 15) = 109
Damage: 1d6 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (6) + 2 - 3 = 5
Damage: 1d6 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (1) + 2 - 3 = 0
Damage: 1d6 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (6) + 2 - 3 = 5
Despite the close quarters, the apparatus seemingly has life of its own and manages to impale the paladin twice!
The other wall crossbows fire at the party!
Haldor: 8d20 ⇒ (10, 13, 17, 7, 18, 10, 9, 15) = 99
Varis: 4d20 ⇒ (1, 7, 11, 3) = 22
Fizz: 4d20 ⇒ (9, 10, 15, 2) = 36
Three on Fizz, assuming an AC 13: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2, 1) + 6 = 15
The plucky gnome is severely wounded by three bolts!
Meanwhile, two strange contraptions, somewhat resembling a ballista that is walking on four legs, close to attack the monk!
Fist vs Varis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 for Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Fist vs Varis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 for Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Fist vs Varis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 for Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Fist vs Varis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 for Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
However none of the attack finds purchase! Kalad, who despite his condition has come with you this far, moves to the paladin and touches him with healing light! Cure Wounds to Fergus: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8. He then yells to the gnome and cleric, Back up, you're too close to the turrets! They are less accurate at range! I'll see if I can disable them! He doesn't seem to be concerned for his own safety while moving forward.
Fizz (-15), Haldor (-4), Fergus (-13) and Varis (-4)
Crossbow Bolt Thingys
Party up!
DM RyckyRych |
@Fizz You are? Remember, I had said you guys received a long rest before we started this part of the adventure so you should be at full HPs, less the three arrows just now... unless I forgot some other injury in the previous room.
Varis strikes the machine-like creature twice, giving it great injury!
Fizz (-15), Haldor (-4), Fergus (-13) and Varis (-4)
Crossbow Thingys (-0 and -16)
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus likewise moves out of the way.
DM RyckyRych |
Fizz and Fergus retreat from the room, leaving the monk and the cleric to fend for themselves while the dwarf paladin promises to fiddle with the panel!
Haldor!
Haldor Dagsson |
Has Varis disappeared from the map?
Against the machine thing:
+1 Warhammer: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
DM RyckyRych |
Silly human and his vision. I assume by "machine" you mean the ballista-like one in the wall nearest you, if so I've moved you there.
Haldor does some damage to the contraption! Meanwhile, the dwarf seems to have been able to further disrupt the same machine! That one is now out of the fight.
However, more bolts fill the room!
vs Haldor: 4d20 ⇒ (4, 5, 19, 4) = 32
vs Varis: 8d20 ⇒ (16, 6, 12, 7, 8, 6, 13, 2) = 70
vs Fergus: 8d20 ⇒ (7, 8, 2, 9, 15, 5, 8, 15) = 69
Damage to Haldor: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Meanwhile, the walking ballista continue to try and punch the monk!
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17 for Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Crossbow Thingys (-0 and -16), one wall unit down!
Go!
DM RyckyRych |
Fizz takes care of the majority of his injuries!
Fizz (-2), Haldor (-8), Fergus (-13) and Varis (-9)
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus chucks a javelin at the walking ballista. I can't seem to see where this is, or where Varis is, on the map.
Javelin: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
DM RyckyRych |
Varis takes down one of the machines but misses the other one!
@ Fergus : Probably a lighting issue? Being human can suck in that regard. You can hear the sounds of combat coming from the north.
Fergus throws a javelin into the darkness but all he can hear is the weapon clattering along the ground afterwards!
Haldor!
DM RyckyRych |
I'll ask again, anyone wanna do the Roll20 thing this weekend?
DM RyckyRych |
Hmm, Sunday perhaps?
DM RyckyRych |
Everybody must be quite busy this weekend. Hope all is well! I'll bot Haldor.
Haldor moves to the next wall unit and tries to Smash it!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 However, this unit seems particularly tougher than the last. Meanwhile, the dwarf continues to try and disable the traps. Sorry lads, its more complicated than I thought! I'm trying! 1d20 ⇒ 13
Suddenly, the wall balista near Haldor seems to go quiet, as does another! The walking crossbow still fights on along with the last of the wall units!
Fist: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20 for Crit on Varis: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (4, 2) + 1 = 7
Fist: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Bolts on Varis: 4d20 ⇒ (8, 9, 8, 19) = 44 1 hits
Bolt: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Fizz (-15), Haldor (-8), Fergus (-13) and Varis (-22, unless you deflect the bolt)
Party up!
Varis Starflower |
using his reaction Varis reflects the bolt

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
DM RyckyRych |
Varis strikes the machine twice, sending it into serious disrepair! However the thing continues to battle the monk!
Marrows!
EDIT : Actually, close enough. We can end this battle as that thing has 3 hit points and the dwarf will be able to shut down the rest.
Combat over!
The hallway suddenly goes quiet as all the machinery stops moving. A set of double doors stand closed in the north wall. Several orc corpses litter the northern end of the hallway. All of them have several bolts sticking out of them.
Your companion seems to be impressed with your skills. After examining and kicking one of the dead orcs he says, Well done! You guys seem to know what you're doing. The paladin then heals some of the party's wounds.
Cure Wounds/Varis: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Cure Wounds/Fizz: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
That's all of the spells I can conjure up. However, I can still patch you up some if you'll allow me.
Lay on Hands, everyone receives 5 HP of healing.
I'm spent, I'm sorry I can't help any more than that. If you guys are ready, we need to keep moving!
Fizzlebomb |
Fizz is fully healed from an earlier cure wounds and the 5 lay on hands. He was only down 2 at the end of the fight. Casting occurred on Thursday. The cure wounds he cast on me can go to Fergus.
perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Looks like the came from the North, before the traps cut them down. Good Dwarf, are there any move traps that you clan has devised to deter would be invaders?
Fergus McDammitson |
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Fergus plans to move north to the double doors but awaits the NPC's answer about traps before doing so. In the meantime, Fergus searches the bodies.
Investigation?: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7
DM RyckyRych |
I'm not sure. I was only lucky that some of the mechanisms in here were something I was able to manipulate. I would imagine the hallway acted as a sentry, I would not think any traps would be deeper inside.
Fergus examines the bodies for clues but turns up nothing of note. They do seem to be part of the same group/clan/army that you have been dealing with, however.
So, anything else? Opening the doors and moving on?
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus will go ahead and move north 30 feet. If we're still in combat initiative, Fergus also will go into Evade/Dodge/whatever it's called.
Because he's just moving this turn, I'll move Haldor without logging out and logging in as Haldor. So will Haldor.
DM RyckyRych |
No, we are out of combat.
The party moves into position before steeling themselves for what lies beyond the doors. The doors open to a platform overlooking an enormous chamber. A group of orcs turns to face you, growling with rage and drooling with anticipation for the kill. Behind and below the orcs lies a sunken section of the chamber, where you see iron tubes as tall as a man running across the room. On the east side of the pit, you spot several large beetles, their mottled hides glowing red as if aflame!
I'll try to describe the features of the room as best I can. The black-like floor to the southeast and southwest is a mesh-like grate. You can see through it to the chamber below (so there are two levels there, you are on the top). The pits to the northeast and northwest are 20' deep from the level you are currently on.
