Game Master ATXRedBeard

Large machinations are at work, seeking to disrupt the balance of power that has long kept the lands of the Nine distinct. The rulers are not content with the petty squabbles of their fathers; each is grasping for power and resources to upset the status-quo. Resist or submit, change is coming to The Steadfast. Will you sit passively on the sidelines of history, or will you rise up to claim your place?

Happy to be here and looking to crafting a cool story in the Ninth World!

Question: These next posts are supposed to be 'solo' posts, correct? That is we are not 'tagging' anyone just yet.

There are some moments that you could tag one another in these posts, but none of you should be in dialogue. For example: Mechanus you might look over and see Breona in the tent, or look up and remark at the unusual bird (Azzuretta) overhead. Maybe you notice the quizzical stare of Jay Zin sizing up the caravan as you pass.

Jay Zin sees the incoming caravan and realizes this is his chance... fortune has smiled down on him.
What ever is going on inside that tent is going to destroy all of humanity... well it most likely will hurt allot of people... either way enough sight seeing man. It's time for you to earn your place in the order.

The young knight takes a look up into the sky and checks on Azuretta. She seems to have found a current and is riding it up into the air then gliding back down over and over again.

Looks like she's enjoying herself. No doubt she knows exactly where I am and what I'm doing...
The thought filled Jay with some confidence and he joins a group of locals who are running up to help unload the caravan. He shoulders his way in and grabs a random sack and just starts following everyone else.
best to keep a low profile still. Get a little closer and get a good look.

Thank you for letting me join the game... My apologies again for the late entry, I know I'll be playing catch up for a few days because of it. I'm really looking forward to telling a good story with all of you.

Although he had become much more self-conscious as the frequency of travelers on the road had increased as they approached their destination, his paranoia kicked in big time as soon as they entered the city of Aian. With his hood over his head, he looked at the drit and dirt below his legs as the lumbering platform continued to float on. Once more he wandered how the huge machine managed to not leave a trail, not even loose dirt was disturbed as the platform passed over the ground.

He heard Muur coming over and Mechanus forced himself to lift his face and attend the caravan master. What does he want with me? The platform has been working ‘better than ever’, according to everyone. Even him.

Muur nodded, ”You’re doing a good job. Much better than the other useless mechanic I had.”

Mechanus gulped as he remembered how the ‘other mechanic’ had been left behind, after relinquishing all his tools, of course.

Muur sighed and continued, ”Listen, I can use your keen eyes here. I have sell my ore to a man named Sidney Mintz, a ruthless trader who thinks he pretty much has no competition around here. But I don’t do business unless there’s a decent profit in it, and I don’t risk my life for free.”

The street they traveled became more or less deserted. Gone were the noises of people hawking their wares, no more children begging for food. Instead, there were rough looking men and women, violence etched on their faces. The tension was palpable and Mechanus hugged his knees closer.

Muur’s face tightened, ”Anyway, I’ll have our guards be ready for anything, but I need your eyes to make sure there’s no funny devices or machines or whatever at use here to Sidney’s advantage. If you spot anything out of place, you tell me. Immediately. Understood?”

Mechanus nodded and started to scan his surroundings. They were inside a courtyard now and people from all around them were watching their caravan. He stood up on the still moving platform and neared the front for a better view. But he still stayed hidden behind some crates…

Happy to have you. Thank you for putting the Charter in your profile - I was going to ask you to do that but just saw that you already did. In your profile, please take your crunch out of spoilers and move the other spoilers below the crunch for my ease of viewing.

Also - I would encourage you to make a separate Alias for Azuretta and to feel free to post observations from the drake's perspective and to explain the drake's actions from the drakes perspective as well. Of course, you can still give the drake commands and such as Jay Zin, but posting simultaneously as the drake is a fun way to add depth to your companionship.

@ All Players - Please format your "Race" in the profile to read as your Pools. So for you Jay it would be formatted "M-10/10 S-14/14 I-16/16"

Also please format your "Class" to read as "Descriptor - Class - Focus" so for you Jay "Swift Jack who Controls Beasts"

"We are going to make a fortune, he is eating out of my hand." Gerrit is gloating as soon as Sydney Mintz leaves the tent, leaning towards Breona in a whisper of a conspirator. He's overly smelling of cologne, and his face is shiny, perspiration on his forehead. His smug sense of triumph doesn't become him.

Breona bites her bottom lip, distracted easily by the sounds of more people in the courtyard. She is uneasy. Unable to sleep the previous night, she wandered the streets near The Emerald Mug, and sat alone in the taproom, watching in sheer wonder how the servers here were using floating trays and emerald mugs that kept all drinks chilled at the press of a button. Some workers were nursing a late night drink, and none of them had a kind word to say about Mintz.

"I didn't get the impression that he's actually interested in buying ghianche in big numbers. I think he imports lots of ore?" Breona rubs her right temple and fidgets with her pouch, peeking out of the tent to gasp at the sight of a large floating platform. She gazes for a couple minutes and then turns back to her brother. "We're small fish in a tiny pond for him. He's fishing in the ocean now. Bigger game. I don't have a good feeling about this guy. Be careful, Gerrit."

Her brother chides her, and prances around under the tent, not really interested in what's going on outside. "I got game, and once we've gotten top shins, you'll owe me an ale or two for talking me down."

Breona sighs, and peeks around the tent flap, a feeling of unease making her gut churn, at the same time excitement rising at the sight of the goods outside. Natural curiosity cannot be suppressed.

Anyone gazing at the tent would see the head of a dark-skinned young woman peeking out at the courtyard, with corkscrew curls, looking at the caravan with great interest.

Thanks again for approving my application, and I hope the format and the presumption that Breona might have heard rumors about Mintz are okay.

level 2 creature a Xi-Drake that soars in the Clouds

Azzuretta found the upward air current again and slowly road it high up into the air keeping an eye out for anything really bad. Her human never really got into too much trouble but still she liked to keep an eye on him... especially with so many strangers about... but right now she was torn... she could see something small in the bushes not too far away... but that would meant leaving Jay Zin unwatched. If it had been a fish she would have been gone... but for an unknown rodent or lizard she could wait. Besides that large line of people and floating platforms were getting close. She would make this her last ride up on the updraft and come back around for a closer look at the little nest the humans lived in here. Best to not be too far away from her pet human.

Xi-Drakes are typically able to read the minds of people very easily(even while at LONG RANGE)... Azzuretta is very young though... and also unable to communicate what she reads in peoples minds... so GM... do you just want to say she has none of these abilities because of her age... or would you like me to try and incorporate those abilities into her role-play, or maybe combine the two... maybe because of her relationship with Jay combined with her age it's more difficult for her to focus on other people's thoughts so she just doesn't unless she's worried...

Yes, I think that we should probably assume that her skills are not fully formed yet. I think she might pick up on some extreme emotions (from the party and from other humanoids) at this point and be able to communicate them to Jay Zin. I think maybe this will be a new skill that Jay Zin & Azuretta will discover soon - so maybe Jay Zin won't at first understand where the intense emotion is coming from. I will work these emotional cues in with the daily prompts (when appropriate) so that you can incorporate them into your posts. In the future, you are (of course) free to explore that connection as you see fit.

I am also imagining that size wise she is about the size of a Falcon. Is that what you are thinking or do you think she is larger already? I am imagining that she will grow as we adventure. As Control Beast tiers up, Azzuretta will become a mount and become more powerful (higher level).

level 2 creature a Xi-Drake that soars in the Clouds

Full grown she's going to be huge, Like the size of an elephant. (but that's when she's a level 5 beast, right now she's level 2).

I had been thinking of her in my head as weighing about 60lbs, being about 6 foot long when stretched out with a 9 foot wingspan... So lots of wing, neck and tail, but not allot of mass to her.

Looking at your picture of the Bald Eagle... awesome picture by the way... and having seen one in real life once, I can see that as being a fair comparison. Although the days of Jay carrying Azzure are lost to the past.

“You!” The shout jarred Basai out of hir reverie and shi turned to regard the guard, his frowning countenance and many scars instantly identifying him as that guard, one Gover Falstaf. Shi knew his name well, and knew that face well too – he had a temper, a fould disposition, and believed hir nothing more than a lumbering brute. It had cost him an eye a few months back... but it had been replaced, it seemed, as the socket glowed with an eerie red light.

He carried a pair of the sharp lances they used to subdue hir at his sides and gestured roughly as the device powering hir containment was shut down, “Get your rocky butt over here, there's more incoming.”

More what? Basai thought as shi rose, stretching and rotating hir limbs. They'd fed hir after the incident earlier and already hir wounds were healing... new mineral precipitating out, digested by the furnace within. They've brought in one strange crate, I wonder if they've brought in more. A plume of steam rose from hir as shi moved forward, the guard jabbing hir in the side a few times just because he could – thankfully, the point had been blunted and didn't quite pierce. Shi didn't tell him, though, merely faked a wince and continued on.

That was two people today – the guard from earlier and this Gover – that shi would shed no minerals over when they encountered their, preferably painful, ends.

Out in the courtyard, Basai looked on as the caravan rolled in, single file. The beasts were heavily laden and there were a number of people around. From the unfamiliar faces and colours of their transport, the diruk assumed they were from far away. Was this why Mintz had been so wound up? Basai ran a hand over the sheared crystals of hir orifice.

It was a moment as the different beasts and vehicles ranged out along the far side, almost as if on display – Basai wondered at that, hadn't whatever 'business' been agreed to already been agreed to? Why bother posturing more? Gover proded hir again, in the lower back, and prompted hir to move, obviously taking great pleasure in needling the diruk. “You're moving all that stuff from the caravan to the storage docks for sorting and review. Understand? Break anything and you'll lose more than a few crystals.”

Basai gestured affirmatively and started over, noting the courtyard had become rather full. Occasionally people would look hir way and most didn't linger in hir path overlong. A shadowy, hooded individual was speaking to what looked like the Caravan master... were they the ones leading this venture? Basai lingered a moment, looking over the new faces with paler colours of yellow tinged with shades of blue flickering in hir crystals. Shi was beginning to envy these caravaneers – they could come and go while shi was forced to work endlessly.

One guard noticed hir lingering and shouted at hir, jolting hir back to the task at hand. Gingerly, shi lifted a large crate and hefted it with a rumble and a grunt of steam. Hir attention shifted up as a shadow passed over, giving Basai a glimpse of an exotic bird-like creature shi'd never seen before – the yard was full of oddities today wasn't it? At least the newness was stimulating enough to improve Basai's mood a touch.

Shi puffed out a stream of steam in what might equate to a Diruk's smile. At least with all the crates, shi'd be able to move around a lot today.

I also welcome Azuretta picking up on Basai's emotions as well, given that body language and visual cues are the primary method of communication for hir. It'd be an interesting part connection if Jay better understood Basai because of Azuretta's developing ability to tap emotions/minds.

A fully grown xi-drake is MUCH bigger than an elephant (unless the guy on pg. 265 of the Core Book is some sort of midget) :)

That is fine, for now she is essential a "medium-sized creature." I was thinking about keeping her "small" for now because we will not always be outside, so she might not be of much use to you (able to fly) in a cave or cramped quarters. I am thinking about using Azuretta's basic attack as a light weapon attack (-1 step, 2 damage.) I am naming this attack "Snip."

If you want to train Azuretta to have other attacks (bite/tail whip Medium Weapon, 4 damage) it would take investing 4 EXP as a "skill." Does anyone see any rules in the book that govern this sort of thing? Anyone have a different idea about this? I think we should wait until Tier 2 for this.

I am torn about whether you can trade out one of your starting "Tricks of the Trade" to have this ability - this would essentially be the equivalent of a nano having a humanoid companion (exists in two places at once) and casting "shape flesh" or whatever - I don't have my book with me right now. You would be able to do 8-9 damage per round this way, without expending effort, which is more than any other build I am aware of.

I imagine she can also walk around (wings furling into arms) (more graceful than this though - poor guy broke his wing)

If Azurette "dies" she will, instead, most likely be severely wounded and take 1d6 days to recover. If someone takes medicine/first aid they can help hasten this.

Better than being stuck that at the inn. Daks thought as he walked through the streets. The weight of the small bag of shins in his pocket, and the threat of a fate worst then death should he wander, pushed him forward with a steady gate. He was to pay the inns protection fee to Z’izix, a lower level thug for one of the many local gangs. Daks was not unfamiliar with the concept of paying for protection. He had travelled to plenty of cities as a boy with his father, and had seen what comes to a place with tight pockets.

Although it was still easy to get lost in the enormity of the great city, Daks had grown familiar with this side of town, and the route to the alley where Z’izix’s collected his fee was simple enough. Shep, the old inn keeper, had taken Daks with him originally as protection. ”Just watch mah back boy, an’ make sure tuh’ keep yer wits ‘bout cha” Shep had warned. But now that Daks had been at the inn for a few months, Shep was willing to send him on his own. He didn’t mind the errand. It gave him a chance to explore the city, and he needed to buy new bowstrings as it was. Daks' mind wandered as he walked pass the shops and street vendors. I wonder what would happen if they all stopped paying at once. Surely they couldn’t take on every bar, shop, and inn in the city. As he entered Mintz courtyard his stomach dropped. The cruel men and women who worked the area always put him on edge, and he had heard fearsome rumors of the cruelty of Mintz, but he continued onward. There were of course other ways to get to Z’izix without crossing through, but Daks was determined to catch a glimpse of what he had seen that first time he set out with Shep.

They were passing the courtyard and were nearly out the other side when it happened. A guard screamed out, his hand covering his eye, blood was pouring down his arm. There stood a creature unlike anything Daks had ever seen. Its body was made of stone. The crystals that covered its body shone red and orange, and as steam rose from its back and shoulders. It spoke in a deep, rumbling voice. at this point I would like Basai to fill in the dialog, but I imagine being something along the lines of “I will not be spoken to like some common animal!” The bloodied guards reply was gurgled through the blood and pain, but soon their where ten men on the creature, and it was subdued by some strange cypher or artifact which held it in place. At this point the crowd had grown too thick to see through and Shep had pulled Daks away. What was that thing? Daks asked baffled. He had seen many an oddity on his travels with his father, but nothing quite like that. ” ’At wasn’t no thang. ‘At was a Diruk. Men made o’ stone. Course, only one I’d eva’ seen was ‘at one der in tha courtyard. Use’lly all it does is push cargo. But I ain’t never ‘erd it speak. Didn’t rightly know it could if I’m speakin’ wif ya honest.” As they left the courtyard Daks felt a pain in his stomach. It doesn’t seem right to treat something… Well… To treat someone like that. Shep nodded but quickly changed the subject. It seemed Shep was always quick to avoid any discussion that had the danger of involving deep intellectual thought.

So here Daks was again, approaching the other side of the courtyard. He was loosing hope that the Diruk he had seen that day was even still alive. That was when he saw hir. Shi was resting on the other side of massive crate. Another caravan was pulling in and the same guard he had seen before, the one who had lost an eye, was going on about moving the supplies. Surely Z’izix can wait a little longer. Besides, I’ll only be here for a few minutes. What’s the worst that could happen…

Talked to Basai. The quote will be "Do not treat me like an object!"

Normally the recap will also quote more of your text, but this one is doing more work establishing the first turn narrative. I look forward to seeing how you all respond! First post is up:

Turn 001 - Breaking the Peace

Genderless M-14/14 ; S-10/10 ; I-10/10 Diruk Glaive who Needs No Weapons

Basai felt the electrical shift in the air in the minerals of hir body, similar to how a human might experience a shift in atmospheric pressure, and hummed thoughtfully, pausing to look up as the quality of light shifted. There was a commotion over by the caravan and the diruk rumbled defensively, dropping the crate as shi hunched over, hands flexed and ready for combat as shi assessed the situation. Slowly, shi picked up the two devices at hir feet – shi knew better than to leave things laying around. One seemed to be a grenade... the other some sort of spherical ingestible.

Observation Check (Diff. 3): 1d20 ⇒ 9 (Pass)

Numenera (Diff. 3): 1d20 ⇒ 1 (Free GM Intrusion)

A man pulled something out of his pocket and the light dimmed as people with glowing faces stepped forward announcing their intent to rob Mintz. There was a buzzing in the warehouse but Basai had no idea if the two were related. The Diruk puffed out steam in a bubble of laughter as the guards were slain where they stood and the rebels moved out into the courtyard, clustering around those blasted slavers. Rolling hir shoulders, the Diruk noted the button-pusher's location and appearance but did not move towards the figure... instead shi turned, backhanding Gover as shi turned.

Action 1: Might Attack (Gover targeted, unarmed): 1d20 ⇒ 20 (Critical roll)

Basai connected solidly, knocking the hated guard into the wall hard to crack bones - a shoulder or ribs, it was hard to tell from the way he slumped to the ground in a heap. The motion caught the rebels' attention and shi waved them over, puffing in what shi hoped they would interpret as a positive way – light and airy, excited bursts with crystals flickering from green through red as a chorus of emotion ran through hir. Hopefully backhanding Gover demonstrated hir intents enough...

Just to emphasize hir alignment, the Diruk tossed the grenade at the guards north of hir, hoping the grenade did something helpful – it looked like a weapon, it ought to do something dangerous.

Action 2: Throw (Grenade, north towards guards 4 spaces away): 1d20 ⇒ 17 (+1 Damage)

Basai is siding with the rebels, so gets the asset to initiative, speed, and might rolls correct? Not sure if it applies to the throw.

“I want out,” Basai rumbled as clearly as shi could, “You killed the guards, I'll help.” A decisive exhalation of steam punctuated hir comment.

Azzuretta did a nice slow glide over the people and their strange devices just comming into the human nest. She could tell that something was up but had no idea what... She needed to get to her pet human before things went and happened. As she turned she saw the walking rock... and was amazed to sense that it was alive. She focused her attention on it and knew her human would too... but she detected no malice or anger... just sadness at not being allowed to fly free. She knew her human would think of it as an enemy. She would just have to put a stop to that. She pumped her wings harder to get to Jay Zin before he did something stupid.

M-10/10 S-14/14 I-16/16 "Swift Jack who Controls Beasts"

As Jay walked upto the caravan he felt Giddy.

I'm sneaking in just like John Olivers, or Bretta Swiftwinds.... I'm a real hero, just like the stories.

A sudden gust of adrenaline shot through him as he saw the stranger pull the device out of his pouch and activate the button. Jay Zin looks at the two guards in front of him and draws their attention to the man with the device.
That man has a device... he's going to ... do something... to someone...

Real suave... hero...real suave...

The two guards saw the man with the device but were too slow to stop him... As the strange dimming started to actually take effect Jay looked around trying to figure out who was fighting who and why.

It's a rebellion against the local merchants... Regular people trying to free themselves against Tyranny. But which side am I supposed to be on. Do I side with the Government and put down the insurrectionists who are so willfully throwing away the lives of the innocent with their own.... or do I oppose the evil overlords imposing there will on the innocent masses. This part is never in the stories.

That's when Jay saw The big blue Rock Man for the first time... and it absolutely murdered that guard... Holy Metalic Toe Tweazers... Creature from elsewhere.... Yep charter says I gotta kill it...

Jay pulls out his crossbow and takes aim on Basai... He could feel that this was going to be the perfect shot. He smiles reaches for the trigger... and has a Xi-Drake land in front of him in the last second ruining the perfect shot...

By the Pope's Glowing Underwares Azzure... You just Ruined my shot!!

Azzuretta just shook her head and hissed.

What do you mean I can't kill him... He's a CREATURE FROM ELSEWHERE!!!

Again Azzuretta shook her head and hissed in a way that would look identical to the first time to an outsider ,

Look wer'e in the middle of a fight and don't have time for this... Just get out of the way

Of course a third hiss and headshake.

so what? Are we supposed to join the blue man group?

this time the Xi-drake makes no discernable response. Jay Zin throws his arms up in the air in exasperation, stops, looks around, see's the rebels behind him, and stomps over to them.

In a sullen tone... reeking of annoyance...
Iv'e just been informed that I'm on your side... I guess... Let me have some blue paint... At that moment Azzuretta pokes her head up between Jay's arm and body... Oh and she wants some too.

Yep! Spending the whole first turn fighting with my Xi-drake!

M-10/10 S-14/14 I-16/16 Inquisitive Jack Who Explores Dark Places

Breona taps her foot restlessly, having returned from the tent entrance back to the desk. Seated on a chair, she is kneading the fingers of her left hand with her right, cracking knuckles. Her back is to the entrance, her mind elsewhere. Gerrit continues to blabber about all the things he wants to do once the transaction is complete.

The light in the tent takes an odd quality, turning dimmer, and even in here the blue tinge of the light is visible. Breona is not the fastest to react to changing situations, but slowly turns her head in wonder, her skin prickling from the burst of static energy. Suddenly their attendant screams, and the guards draw their weapons, albeit more sluggishly than one would expect.

Numenera Check (Difficulty 3): 1d20 ⇒ 15 (Pass)

Someone's using a numenera device. A powerful one! Hm, possible effect on reaction time? Fascinating! It's both a thrilling thought as well as scary, as Breona rises from her chair. She tugs on Gerrit's arm. He shrugs her off, all of his bluster forgotten as he dives behind the desk in a panic. He gestures wildly to her to hide as well, but Breona refuses to cower in fear. She needs to know what's going on.

The guards have dashed outside, and the sound of fighting is clearly audible. Breona is closely watching the near vicinity of the tent, standing to the side of the entrance. She makes no sign of choosing any side, and remains quiet. There are shouts, and they don't bode well. "Help us overthrow the tyrants, help yourselves to the wealth inside that is rightly yours!" is clearly audible though Breona cannot locate the source of the battle cry. Not the best time to be a visiting merchant trying to do business.

She reaches for one of the two precious cyphers she owns, ready to throw the Lutin spores if either guards or rebels make an aggressive move towards those in the tent.

Daks watched intently as the Diruk worked, trying his best to stay out of sight, but to be honest he wasn’t even sure shi could see. I wonder if they sees thing like us. Maybe it’s some sort of heat vision, or by sound. Surely not smell… But his train of though was interrupted. A sudden feeling of grogginess spread over him. He scanned the area, his head moving slowly. He heard the scream behind him but by the time he had turned around the guards where lying dead on the ground. Two rebels with faces painted stood over the dead guards. Another two ran to shut the entrance gate. The paint on their faces radiated, and they moved quickly, seemingly unaffected by the strange device causing Daks to feel so encumbered. He locked eyes with one of the rebels, looking again at the paint. Numenera! Numenera roll passed with a 17 So that’s their trick huh? I’ve got to get some of that paint... Again his thought process was interrupted by a scream as battle broke out amongst the courtyard. ”Death to the Robber-Barons!” The courtyard erupted in battle.

Pulling of his leather gloves and focusing his mind as Sek Tuk had thought him he sent rippling bolts of electricity down his arms. Special Ability: Shock. -1 Int This could get interesting Daks thought as he pulled his shield from his side and drew his verred, electricity crackling between the two blades. A rebel turned to him and seeing his sword drawn, shouted to his partner, closing in on him. Thinking quickly Daks yelled out. Death to the Robber- Baron! Raising sword in the air, and trying his best to keep the fear from his voice. He grimaced as the rebel raised his hand, but his hand was glowing blue, and Daks felt a relief wash over him as the paint touched his face, invigorating him. Alright I’m going to go… Uh… Kill some guards! He shouted, as he tried to make his way towords the Diruk. Maybe I can aid her… Um… Him? Aid in the Diruks escape! But the crowd in front of him was too thick. It was utter chaos. Guards and rebels were locked in combat. Citizens were running for their lives. There was even a man fighting a Xin Drake! Or was he arguing with a Xin Drake? It was too much to take in. With no other options Draks grabbed at his belt and flipped a hidden switch. Here goes nothing! He felt the muscles in his legs tighten like springs. It hurt at first, but as he jumped he felt the pressure release, throwing him forward, launching himself across the court yard towards the Diruk. Woooohoo! As he came crashing down behind the Diruk he slid, rolled, and picked himself back up quick as he could. The Diruk turned to him. Daks smiled, ready for his adventure to finally beginning. I’m Daks! I'm here to help!

Nonetheless, Mechanus nodded, "Yes, sir." For all his faults, Muur had treated him well and deserved his loyalty but Mechanus promised to break away from him should Muur start treating him like he did some of the others.

The lights started dimming and Mechanus had no problem identifying the cause and those that were benefited. "Muur, those with blue paint on their faces are using some strange device to gain an advantage..."

Then. Chaos.

His own device started whirring and Mechanus got a sense that he could avoid the sluggish effect. His surface circuits started to adjust but he had to interrupt this task. Moving out of the way of a spear thrust seemed more important. He felt sluggish, the heat was oppressive...

Actions 2
Overthrow the tyrant? I'm not part of this...
With hands up but glowing with energy in case he had to use it, Mechanus stayed out of the way.

Muur rallied his own guards but also protected his own caravan. he also had nothing to do with the tyrant or his adversaries.

The nano asked Muur, "What do we do boss? Should I turn the platform around?"

Turn 002 - Embrace The Glow

Genderless M-14/14 ; S-10/10 ; I-10/10 Diruk Glaive who Needs No Weapons

Basai held still as the woman approached hir, the unfamiliar and gentle touch something new to the Diruk. She was moving oddly fast, hard to track. Not wanting to scare the human off or hurt her, shi limited her steam venting much like holding one's breath while the paint was applied but started when the world suddenly sped up. Hir crystals flashed through an alarmed orange then flickered through yellow and pink – whatever this paint was, it made hir feel so very fast! Usually shi was among the slower individuals but now... now those awful guards were so very slow! Basai couldn't help the puff of gratitude or the rumble of excitement. Shi would be free now! This was hir chance.

Straightening, the Diruk felt full of hope for the first time in months. Reflecting this, the natural colours of hir minerals and crystals shone through, deep blues and prismatic clear crystals shimmering. Sure shi was rough around the edges, but it was hard to deny the excitement that radiated from the diruk.

Jay Zin wrote:

When Jay Zin approached and announced what side he was on, Basai rumbled an acknowledgement and noted the bird with him. “Your bird?” Shi asked, pointing up as hir crystals flickered through the yellow of curiosity, “I saw earlier.” Shi would have tell the other the moment of happiness it gave hir before chaos broke out, the gratitude shi felt for the break in monotony.

Shi glanced at where shi'd lobbed the grenade to see a mustard gas cloud lingering right where shi'd hoped the grenade would land. They were dead but they were doubled over and looking like someone had lanced them in the torso – Basai could relate and rumbled affirmatively, it seemed the guards would come to understand hir experienced better today.

While looking at hir handy work, the human who put the paint on hir placed her hands on hir again, drawing hir attention. “Thank you, I’m glad I put my trust in you… Can you help us further? We need something from in there…”

”I will.” Basai looked to the warehouse the human indicated and turned, only to feel a woosh of air pressure behind accompanied with a scream of... joy? Puzzled, the Diruk turned back the other way, sand and dirt sifting from hir with the speed of hir motion, to find the youth also offering help. The Diruk didn't know what to say... there had been no help for a very long time, only the occasional lighter Harvest... and now, within the space of a few moments not one but three humans were lending a hand? Did they know of hir imprisonment? Shi hoped so... but it did not lessen the gratitude for the support.

Daks wrote:

As gingerly as shi could, Basai reached out and cupped a large rocky hand over Daks' head, mimicking the way shi'd seen adults interact with children. It was more of a rocky arch held about two inches off Dak's hair. "Good." The button-human had called this one a boy, which if Basai understood correctly, meant a half-grown human... so a pat was the correct action. Pleased with hir assessment and interaction abilities, the Diruk turned back to the warehouse.

Empowered by the apparent support of the people behind hir, the Diruk hunched hir shoulders and focused on the lone guard, crystals flickering with crimson, ”Move!” The shout sounded more like the tumbling of rocks down a hillside.

Shi closed the distance and, reveling in hir new found paint-speed, aimed a punch at the slowed guard. Perhaps shi could impress hir supporters.

Might attack, unarmed punch, with 1 level of effort applied = 3 Might - 3 Edge = 0 Might spent; I believe the Paint Asset applies and possibly Opportunist? Not sure if the guard's been attacked yet.

Success:
Basai's fist dug a divet out of the side of the wall and connected with the guard's chest, breaking bones and knocking him out of the way. With that taken care of, Basai stepped through the door and looked around, ”Which thing?” ... It felt oddly good to speak with a group again, shi'd be alone for so long.

Failure:
Basai's fist missed the guard and slammed into the wall, leaving a crater in the side of the building. It was hard to tell if shi'd deliberately avoided the guard or shi hadn't yet become accustomed to the increased speed and had misjudged. In any case, steam hissed dangerously as shi leaned forward, ”Let us pass.” ... It felt oddly good to speak with a group again, shi'd be alone for so long.

Action 1

As The Paint interacted with the Numenera device Jay Zi could feel the world slow down around him ... well this should make things a little easier. He looked at Azzuretta and could see she was adjusting to the change of pace just fine...[/b]

At that moment someone rocketed across the compound... over his head... and landed next to the giant rock creature. What in the name of platinum and plasteel... Why don't you go help your new boy friend it looks like most of the action is taking place over by the warehouse any ways. I'll catch up...

As the Xi-drake started to get ready to take to the air.. he pats her on her back and a slight bluish shimmer encases her as he activates the Light Shield Cypher he has to protect her. I do not have access to the Technology compendium. So not sure if I can do this...

... AND BE CAREFUL he called after the drake as she took to the air. He pulled his crossbow closer and started loping off after her towards the warehouse. Immediate moves are free, right?

level 2 creature a Xi-Drake that soars in the Clouds

Action 1

What a good pet Jay Zin was. Azzuretta was very proud of how well her training of him was coming.

With a graceful bound and one powerful beat of her wings she easily cleared the two humans who had given her new blue plumage... but she saw two more of the creatures running towards the building where all the humans were congregating with her new stone friend... She decided to help Jay zin deal with these two.

With a flip of her wings she lands right in front of the two guards pinning them between herself and the two rebels following after them.

M-10/10 S-14/14 I-16/16 "Swift Jack who Controls Beasts"

Action 2
Moving towards the Warehouse Jay saw Azzuretta land between the two guards and the warehouse. He shook his head and fired a shot with his crossbow bolt, between the two rebels running that way, at what he knew would be a very surprised guard from behind.

Pierce (5 dmg): 1d20 ⇒ 8 (Assets):...Is it my job as a player to identify Assets that help me? I'm sure having to contend with both Azzuretta and the rebels behind them would distract the guards... as well as perhaps Jay Zin's enhanced speed... although firing past the two rebles most likely does not help....

level 2 creature a Xi-Drake that soars in the Clouds

Action 2

Azzuretta chuckled to herself knowing she surprised the two human guards... and now they had to deal with her... the two rebels behind them as well as Jay Zin's crossbow... One of the guards for no apparent reason turned his back to Azzureeta and she could clearly see one of Jay Zin's bolts sticking out of his back. Well if he was going to turn his back to her...

bite (2 dmg): 1d20 ⇒ 17 Nice 17 means an extra damage right.

The man crumples infront of her and she gives a hiss of challenge to the other guard...

Genderless M-14/14 ; S-10/10 ; I-10/10 Diruk Glaive who Needs No Weapons

I don't imagine it hurts to identify potential assets for confirmation. =3 And a 17 is a minor effect, yep! +1 Damage. I found a handy dandy cheat sheet online last week for quick reference.

Yes you should always try to identify your assets when possible. For this attack you get the following assets: +1 (you are glowing) +1 (enemy is not glowing - negative modifier for his defense) +1 (At least three people are attacking the enemy - Pg 101)

These unnamed guards & rebels are level 2 - so with three assets you auto-hit. They have light armor, but because of Azuretta's 17 - you do enough to kill one of the guards. (5-1)+(3-1)=6 damage. Feel free to edit your post or add a new post to identify which blow kills the guard.

Jay Zin wrote:

[bigger] Immediate moves are free, right?[/ooc]

Moving up to 10 feet does not count as an action - so is "free." (pg. 89) Moving up to 50 ft is one action - called "Action: Move." Moving up to 100 ft is a difficulty 4 speed check (Action: Move - pg 99-100) - still one action.

So I am interpreting your intention for the 2 turns as (action round 1) you activate the cypher & move 10 feet (2 blocks) and then (action round 2) is to move 10 ft & shoot the crossbow.

Does that make sense?

Just for the sake of example:
You could have made two shots - one per round - also moving up to 10 ft per round.
You could have rolled for longer movement (difficulty 4 but you are trained in running & are glowing - so difficulty 2 for you) and (if passed) moved up to 100 ft & then taken second action.

I think it makes sense to give Azuretta the ability to automatically Action:Move up to a long distance (100ft) per round, but she still needs to abide by the immediate distance Action: Attack rule.

So generally speaking not, equipable "handheld" cyphers only work on you - not your creature. I see the cypher part of the Xi-drake entry and I think that we could have a longer-term quest for your character to build/find a cypher holster for Azuretta. Let me know if you want to activate the light shield for yourself still or not activate it. I would be more open to you using an injectible cypher on the drake, but not a carried/worn one. I can be more specific about your cyphers when I post them now that I know you don't have that book.

success:
The man's circuits turned a bluish tint, something that Mechanus tried in vain to hide. But his lethargic state simply dissapeared.

fail:
Try as he might, Mechanus was just too nervous to get his numenera device to comply to his wishes.

Actions 2
Mechanus turned to Muur as he grabbed a strange metal pod from his pack. "Boss, I can make anyone comply with our wishes or run away in fear should they approach us."

With his artificial brain in overdrive, the man padded his arms making sure his repulsion field was active. This was getting very ugly, very quickly.

He continued to scan the crowd and the blocked exits, trying to figure out what to do next.

Sorry if I seem non-commital but I'll play along. I promise. I'm just waiting for the right time. :)

In that case Jay Zin' prolly would have fired another crossbow bolt at the other guard in hopes of setting him up to be taken down by the two rebels...

pierce (5dmg): 1d20 ⇒ 11

just have Azzuretta's actions both precede both of Jay zin's actions.

As Daks collects himself the button-pusher turns and shouts to him. "Catch your breath, boy. Then help us take this warehouse! I bet that guard can’t move fast enough to dodge one or two of your arrows." Boy? Thinks Daks, as he does his best to stand, but something knocks him off balance before he can. "Good." Said the Diruk as shi nearly knocked Daks over with a "pat". Daks let out an OOF! as he got to his feet. Dropping his verred and shield and drawing his bow Daks shouts, disdain in his voice."I'm not... a BOY." Turning to the guards on either side of Mintz Daks looses an arrow at each. Take this. Guard One, Difficulty 0, + Effort for +3 Damage: 1d20 ⇒ 19Guard Two, Difficulty 0, + Effort for +3 Damage: 1d20 ⇒ 7. As my minor effect I would like to send a warning shot past Mints head after I shoot the guards and yell Mintz! Hold it or your next!If that effect isn't minor enough at least have the guards fall where Mintz can see them as I yell the same thing. With the medium weapon, shock, and applying effort it should deal 8 damage to each.
The arrows look like two bolt of lightning as they fly across the battlefield and rip through Mintz guards. As the collapse Daks turns to the button-pusher. Call me Daks. This will be both of my actions.

Mechanus Circuit Recalibration : 1d20 ⇒ 20
Basai Punch - Effort for Extra Damage: 1d20 ⇒ 12 Hits for 8 damage (1 armor), kills guard

Initiative Rolls
Glowing:
Initiative Daks: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Initiative Mechanus: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Initiative Jay Zin (trained): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Initiative Azuretta: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Initiative Basai (inability): 1d20 ⇒ 19

Not Glowing
Initiative Breona: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (15) - 3 = 12

Daks & Jay are both shooting arrows (at difficulty 0) at the same two guards - I will resolve the hits in initiative order. You might want to use spoilers to say something like "If target is already dead, instead do X"

Also, All Action 1 actions happen first, then all Action 2 actions happen. Stacking the actions lets us move through the scene a bit faster. Making a single action per day is not that satisfying, especially when you can't attack if you also move. Let me know if you guys have any other mechanics questions. We are all still learning this, so please voice anything that is unclear as soon as it comes up

I think Daks was targeting the guards near Mintz.. Straight line up from Daks. Jay Zin was targeting the two guards between him and the warehouse at the bottom of the map.

I was using my phone so it was no problem! I was just kidding ;) Is that first minor effect ok or was it to much? (I know it would technically take another turn but I just liked the flair. If not how about my second option?) Also I believe I used effort for extra damage correctly but I wanted to make sure I did that right. (A lot of my knowledge is from Cypher but it's the same system so it should at least be similar.)

I get that the extra arrow is pure fluff so I will allow it - but in the format of the stacked actions I would encourage your description to be kind of like:

Action 1: Shoot arrow at guard next to Mintz
<dice roll 19>
The arrow strikes the guard just as he is turning to look back at the party, the electric charge of the arrow, blows the guards body directly into the path of Mintz, who nearly trips over the corpse in his haste to get out of the courtyard. Daks shouted "Mintz! Hold it or your next!" and causally strode forwards

Action 2: Seeing that the guards were continuing to run towards the entrance, Daks nocked his second arrow and took aim at the guard nearest Mintz.

Have them separate and assume that everyone else is acting and reacting as if passing two action rounds.
