So, Harrow Points! Here's how they work.
Each adventure in "Curse of the Crimson Throne" is keyed to one of the six suits of the Harrow Cards, and, correspondingly, one of the six ability scores. This first part is keyed to the suit of...er...keys, and to DEXTERITY.
You each get 1 Harrow Point for this adventure. If there had been Key cards in that spread, you would have gotten more...sorry there weren't any. Sometimes, the gods are unkind.
Harrow points last for the entire ADVENTURE for which they are generated--so there's no need to be in a hurry to spend them. However, when you wish to, you can spend your Harrow Point in any of the following ways:
1)REROLLS: You can use your point to reroll any one Initiative check, Reflex save, Dexterity-modified attack, or Dexterity-based skill check. You must abide by the new result, even if it's lower. (Though if you have other abilities that grant rerolls you can reroll the reroll.)
2)DODGE BONUS: You can spend your Harrow Point to gain a +1 Dodge bonus to AC for one encounter.
3)SPEED BONUS: You can spend your point to increase your base speed by 10' for one encounter.
You also all will get unique bonuses in certain encounters based on the role cards you drew at the beginning of Zellara's reading...but those are secret. I'll tell you when they come up!

Adoros Porphyria |

Maybe, but you haven't seen Adoros' darker side really come out yet. He is kind of self-centered and arrogant. When he asks chivalrous it is to a purpose, usually to increase his own imagine in the eyes of others. The Order of the Cockatrice motto: If it doesn't serve me, screw you.

Korriban Balros |

Hey, Norv. Quick question: if we don't use any Harrowing Points in the first part of the adventure, do we still have them? Like in theory, stockpile them?

The Norv |

Harrow Points last for the entire "adventure" (in the unit it was published--so, for the entirety of "Edge of Anarchy"), which is longer than you might think. I would have to think about it myself, but I would say probably not, as there's a bit of a time-lapse between the end of "EoA" and the next installment.
But again, the adventure is longer than you might expect...so don't feel the need to blow them right away.

The Norv |

Hi all,
So, a few thoughts on our format as I settle into DMing my first PbP (and as we get closer to combat...). These are ideas I've either seen in action and they've seemed to work well, or I've seen them discussed (there's a great thread with PbP tips) and think they look promising. Let me know what you think of the following ideas; they're not set in stone.
- The Rule of Two: Essentially the Rule of Two is meant to push the game's momentum forward a bit. If a course of action is suggested by a party member, and then seconded by another (and I don't see any obvious character reason someone would object), then I'll just move the action in that direction. So, for example, after I get this done I'm going to go ahead and move the action on to reconnaissance of the fishery, since that was proposed by Korriban and seconded by Imperia. (This could be modified to the Rule of Three if it worries people.)
- Always Be Pushing: Unless you've mentioned that you're going to be on hiatus for some reason, do the group a favor and try to post something short and sweet once a day or so, just to let us know you're still engaged. Even if it's in the discussion thread saying "God, I had the worst day at work and can't update till tomorrow." Real life comes up and that's not a problem (it gives us more time to plan our actions!), but it's nice to know that we don't have to worry about anyone having been eaten by a crocodile. :P
- Group Initiative: In the hopes of speeding up combat, I'll roll initiative for everyone at the start of a combat. The baddies will take the highest roll in their group, and PCs will be split into two groups (unless of course EVERYONE rolls higher/lower than them). Within those groups, actions will take place in the order posted so that things can move along.
- Player Knowledge: Also to move combat along, I'll post baddies' essential stats under a spoiler each round of combat, so that everyone can know when they post their actions who has hit and/or killed targets already.
Thoughts/ideas/objections?

Sounds good, Norv. I'll try to keep you guys informed about my schedule as often as I can and post as often as I can.
Also, there's a couple of things I would like to ask about. Since I'm the Dexterity guy, obviously I'm going to keep increasing my Dex. I'm also planning on going into the Duelist prestige class. So I created a couple of threads for advice and opinions. I got a couple of interesting answers.
First...
The agile enhancement allows dex to damage if you have weapon finesse as a feat. I would ask the GM about that. Otherwise be ready to focus on strength once you get your dex to a certain point.
Either path works. It just depends on what else you want to do beside doing damage.
Do you still allow that?
Next...
You'd probably get more feedback if Duelist was in your thread title. Ask your GM if Dervish Dance could work with a rapier (or just use the scimitar). RP you could learn the feat at Vencarlos fencing school.
So, would this be possible?

As far as the "agile" weapons, yes, definitely--if you find/can purchase magical weapons with that kind of power, I have no problems with them.
The Dervish Dance comment confuses me, only because as far as I can tell the feat just lets you apply weapon finesse and similar to a scimitar, which you can already do with a rapier since it's a finesse weapon.
Visiting family ...should still be able to post once or so a day.
Have a good visit!

- The Rule of Two:...
- Always Be Pushing:...
- Group Initiative:...
- Player Knowledge:...
The Rule of Two gets my vote simply for the Star Wars reference... The fact that the rule itself is actually well-thought and sensible is just icing on the cake! ;p
Always Be Pushing and Player Knowledge both will probably help the 'natural flow' of the game, so sure thing, absolutely.
As for Group Initiative, since all enemies initiative gets bumped to the highest among them, this is obviously a buff for the bad guys. At times, it'd be pretty minor, other times pretty substantial...
I believe if the enemies took the average of their rolls (sum them up, divide by number of enemies, round up or down, whichever you like) and not the highest among them, it'd be more balanced.
Anyway, just my two cents, and if you want to do it your way it's fine by me The Norv, don't worry! ^_^

The Norv |

That's a good point re: group initiative. The group I saw actually had BOTH groups take the highest, which would be more fair. My problem with that is that at least half the time it means everyone gets a potshot at the baddies, so I'll have the villains take their median initiative (to avoid outliers) and you guys still move in two groups!

Gadriel the Lost |

All the rules seem fine by me. I'm still trying to get into the habit of getting to the boards on my days of. During my work week, I can check the boards pretty frequently since I work in an office. However, I have a busy life when I'm not at work so I've been getting distracted and not making time to at least pop in and update in the mornings and evening when it's NOT so busy. :D I'll try and get into a better habit! :D

Raina Thornton |

Sorry for my extended absence. I got sick while I was out of town and I was basically bedridden over the weekend, blah! Catching up on all my games while drugged up on flu meds is hard.
I'm reading up on all the posts I missed now, will post ASAP. Those four "rules" above seem cool with me though, as with the Harrow rules.
In any case, all, in advance--Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or whatever phrase you prefer! :)

Korriban Balros |

Schedule update: I work Friday afternoon, Saturday afternoon, and won't be able to post on Sunday until the afternoon due to my dad and me are going to see the new Hobbit movie, so I won't post for a while.

Korriban Balros |

Hey, Norv. Just curious. What experience point track are we using? Fast, medium, or slow? Also, what level do you think we will be by the time the AP is done? The AP says that we should be at level 16 by the end.

The Norv |

My plan had been to use the medium XP track, which I believe should put you around level 16 by the end of the AP. I may occasionally hand-wave something if there's a point where you should accomplish a particular level for the sake of story ease (say, if you're sixty points shy of a level at the end of an adventure).
Also, I cannot believe what is going on with my virtual DM dice...*stares at them suspiciously*

Korriban Balros |

@Norv
Okay. Thanks for letting me know.
@Group
Oh boy. The guards go after Raina. We have to take them out now. Any ideas to take them out silently?

Imperia Winthrune |

Don't worry guys, we are accumulating positive karma, so when we need it the most, we'll get a string of high rolls! ^_^
And have a nice trip The Norv! :)

Imperia Winthrune |

A couple of things:
First, Happy New Year's Eve, everyone.
Second, I just got done with the new Hobbit movie. It was awesome.
I saw it too just 3 days ago, and I couldn't agree more! ^_^
