It just occurred to me that I copies and pasted my "Commencement" intro here and didn't edit it for "#1-05: The First Mandate (Tier 1-4)" - my bad!

Here's a quick "Pre-Briefing" to get us ready for when we begin in just a few more days!

Your comm units buzz, alerting you that you have been summoned to the Lorespire Complex - the Starfinder Society Headquarters on Absalom Station. First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo herself has requested your presence for a mission briefing. You arrive a few minutes before the meeting is scheduled to begin, allowing you some time to introduce yourselves to each other!

Feel free to introduce your characters to one another and roleplay as you like before you are called in for your mission briefing!

Apologies, the Campaigns tab was not updating.

A Shirren with a lightly pearlescent violet exoskeleton arrives. She takes several minutes to decide between the small number of identical chairs available.

Once the choice is made, she settles in with a satisfied buzz.

A second Android wearing formal attire and sporting a smile that is both unnaturally unsettling and incredibly forced enters the briefing room. His eyes dart quickly to both of his new compatriots and he waves to them awkwardly, and individually. Perfect, he thinks to himself. I couldn't have programmed a better simulation.

He takes a seat near them performing a quick calculation as to hopefully not be too distant as to seem uninterested but not so close as to be overbearing. Just like the self-help thread instructed him to do.

Your comm units buzz, and you are called in to meet with the First Seeker!

The First Seeker’s meeting room is a lavish space, with several lush couches and armchairs surrounding a wide, low table. First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo appears uncharacteristically extravagant, having exchanged her typical stationwear for a sleek, fashionable suit in a shade of copper that matches the Starfinder Society logo emblazoned on the table. Behind her stands the towering vesk leader of the Acquisitives faction, Radaszam, wearing a suit of ceremonial armor.

Luwazi smiles and gestures to the seats. “A pleasure to see you all. I trust you’ve heard about tonight’s gala? I have a rather important announcement to make, so we’ve decided to use the opportunity to entertain and impress representatives of the various interests who have helped the Starfinder Society through our setbacks with the Scoured Stars Incident.

“That’s where you come in. As some of the shining stars of the newest Starfinder Society agents, I’d like to have you mingle with the guests so they can see for themselves what we’ve been able to accomplish. It’s nothing too fancy; I’d just like you all to be polite and talk about some of your experiences with the Society so far. We’re expecting some government dignitaries, investors, corporate interests, and the like, so be sure to stay on your best behavior. Also, don’t be afraid to brag a bit—it’s our goal to impress them.”

“But don’t be stupid,” the armored vesk breaks in. Luwazi Elsebo glances over her shoulder and grins. “Have you all met Radaszam? He’s certainly someone else you should be trying to impress.”

Radaszam scowls. “Events like this never go as planned. Luwazi’s contracted one of my merc outfits, the Obsidian Spiders, to provide security for the night. I want to make sure that if anything goes down, you’re working with my agents, rather than us all tripping over one another. So stay alert, but if anything happens, make sure you’re talking to me about it rather than jumping in blindly.”

The First Seeker nods and picks up the datapad. “I’ve singled out five guests who I would really like to make a good impression with. These folks should be your priority tonight, so I’ve compiled basic information about each of them here. Things will start up in about an hour in the Skyreach Room. Any questions before we go?”

The First Seeker transmits a data file to each of your personal comm units, then gives you a minute or two to finish your introductions to one another, study the files, and ask any questions that you might have.

Though the smile remained unnaturally plastered across his face, Sigma was uneasy. True, he always showed up to the lorespire in his formal wear when accepting assignments in hopes of making a strong first impression with new colleagues, but he had never engaged others in the proposed interface of "the Gala." Nor had he ever ran any of the simulations that an android having difficulty integrating into the social operating system of life ought to have done.

Still, Luwazi had done him a small boon by providing the list of 5 people to specifically attempt interactions with. He couldn't run the desired simulations on the limited time table but perhaps a cursory net scan on his comm device would turn up a little bit more information. After all, many sentient organics and non organics love social media, perhaps he could familiarize himself with some of their interests in an attempt to formulate some sort of plan. Not unlike what he would do with the lorespire computers when reviewing fellow compatriots accolades when time permitted.

Ytchkn thrives on meeting new people and couldn't be happier with the mission. An opportunity for her to show the society where her true value lies! For those familiar with Shirren anatomy, she's grinning "ear to ear" - so to speak.

X5 looks at the First Seeker and to Radaszam. "I cannot over state the high probability of NOT success if I have to communicate with multiple sentients that I am unfamiliar with their customs. This has not gone well in the past." glancing at his drone "not to mention, I'm sure that combat drones are frowned upon at something like this?" the rise of the last statement seems to intend a question. "Is there a customs manual I could download and digest?"

"Oh and Vesk have a 50/50 probability of being my enemy so far...Shall I run a simulation now or wait until combat starts?" X5 attempts a smile and then it fades.

given the number of androids, perhaps this mission will go better than the last few. or at least consistent with the known odds.

After Ytchkn's question, “I’m always expecting trouble,” Radaszam says, but a moment later he shrugs. “I don’t know of any plans specifically targeting this event, but my team and I have our eyes and ears open.”

Luwazi grins a bit at X5NSA's questions and statements before replying. “You can dress up if you’d like, but it’s not necessary. You’re *Starfinders* - there’s a certain air of excitement that comes along with the armor and gear. Bring your drone, too! Maybe you'll find someone you can 'talk shop' with!”

The First Seeker puts a hand up to her earpiece for a moment, then nods as one of the shirren departs. "Seems we need Tamerriv for a different mission elsewhere, according to Guidance. We'll be getting another agent, Torqe, to join your team shortly."

You can still ask another question or two, but then you will have to prepare for the gala! You can roll Culture checks (although I'll also allow Computer check, instead, at a higher DC) to try and learn more about the five individuals whose names you've been given. Sigma Mu was able to access information about two of them (Sigma Mu's choice), but there are still three more you could get some intel on!

At this time, please also finalize your boon slots for this session (marking them in the Discussion tab is fine). This mission is of high importance to both the Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo) and the Acquisitives factions, so if you are members of either, you might consider slotting those faction's champion boons.

Hero of the Stars (Starship Boon; Limited Use):

You defeated the dreaded Besmaran pirate ship, Lawblight, showcasing your determination during an intense starship combat. This boon activates anytime your starship is reduced to 0 or fewer Hull Points. Your starship immediately regains a number of Hull Points equal to its tier × 5. A starship can never regain more than 30 Hull Points in this manner. A starship can never have more than one of these boons attached to it. When this boon activates, cross it off your Chronicle sheet.

Faction’s Friend (Social Boon; Limited Use):

By assisting various factions of the Starfinder Society, you have proven yourself as a dependable asset. By slotting this boon, if you would fail to earn Fame at the end of an adventure by failing to fulfill a success condition, you can check one of the boxes on this boon. Doing so reminds your current championed faction of your past exploits, and you still earn 1 Reputation (but no Fame) with that faction as if you had successfully fulfilled the condition. You can use this boon only if you would also gain at least 1 XP for completing the adventure.

True Savior of Tasch (Slotless Boon; Limited Use):

You helped ensure a measure of prosperity for the Akitonian town of Tasch by enticing AbadarCorp to set up a shipping outpost in the town. You can forgo making a day job roll to instead devote time to assist with the growth of Tasch. Any time you opt to do so, check a box on this boon and make a note on the Chronicle sheet associated with that scenario, indicating you partook in this endeavor. Once all five boxes on this boon are marked, you receive 500 UPBs as recompense from the people of Tasch for helping to develop their now-thriving town. These UPBs cannot be converted to credits and must be used to craft some form of equipment.

Marked Field Agent (Slotless Boon):

Having met the amalgam of intelligences known as Guidance, you have successfully completed your induction into the Starfinder Society. The Society offered you a subdermal implant as part of your commencement. You receive this augmentation for free. If you declined to receive the augmentation, cross this boon off your Chronicle sheet.
SOCIETY SUBDERMAL GRAFT
SYSTEMHand
MODEL LEVEL PRICE

This implant rests underneath the skin of the palm of one hand, or at the end of a tentacle or similar appendage in species that lack hands. The augmentation can be activated or deactivated mentally as a swift action. Activating the implant causes a rendition of the Starfinder Society’s symbol to glow underneath the skin. This augmentation acts as a mark, letting others know you are a member of the Starfinder Society. It also increases the light level within 5 feet by one step while active.
Star Sugar Heartlove!!! (Slotless Boon; Limited Use):
During your commencement missions, you had the chance to pick up your own copy of the latest album from sugar-pop sensation Strawberry Machine Cake. This album is already a Pact Worlds hit and has quadrupled in price. You can resell the album for 200 credits prior to the start of your next adventure. If you sell the album, cross this boon off your Chronicle sheet. Alternatively, you can decide to keep the album, which might somehow prove useful in the future.

Starfinder Insignia (Slotless Boon)::

Venture-Captain Arvin presented you with a commemorative insignia in gratitude for your services to the Starfinder Society. Although it appears to be an ordinary medal showing the symbol of the Starfinder Society, this insignia can store as much information as a common tier-1 datapad. Unless told about this secret, a non-Starfinder must succeed at a DC 20 Perception or Sense Motive check to realize the insignia is a storage device. This insignia is worth 0 credits and cannot be sold.

He then taps two buttons on a tiny control unit located on the back of his left hand, giving you all the encrypted frequency that the Spiders will be on, and another secure channel that he'll be monitoring at the same time.

"The Spiders use encrypted receivers, so as long as you aren't saying anything that's too obvious over a frequency other than these, plain Common will do. The Skyreach room has service corridors to the north and south - if we need to speak more privately, I'll just ask if I can 'borrow a moment of your time', then head to the southern corridor."

Then, with a slight tilt of his head and an even more subtle upward turn at the corner of his lips in Viper's direction, "I'll be keeping an eye on you, too, I think."

Iteration-177: Iteration-177 is a relative newcomer to the Aspis Consortium. In addition to making waves by urging Consortium support of the Starfinders, they have an interest in religious artifacts and connections.

Naiaj: Naiaj is a bleachling gnome with a fierce protectiveness of the Starfinders who encourages — some say demand — competence and teamwork from Society agents. She’s a venture-captain who served long before the Scoured Stars incident.

Royo: The ysoki Royo has something of a rivalry with Historia-7 and the Dataphiles faction, and he tends to snub individuals who he perceives to rely overmuch on technological “crutches.” He’s also an elected member of the Forum, the Starfinder Society’s governing council.

Ykris: The alien symbiote Ykris represents CeriCore Labs. Business-wise, the corporation has very little to gain from the Starfinder Society’s endeavors, but it nevertheless made a substantial donation; rumors suggest the contribution was someone’s pet project.

Zo!: Zo! is an undead media mogul well known throughout the Pact Worlds, always looking for an idea for a new show, strategies to improve his ratings, or other lucrative entertainment deals. His organization funded the recent Society expedition to Salvation’s End, and he is keenly interested in further exploration of the false moon.

With your searching of the infosphere complete, you can take the elevators up to the gala itself (the map and handouts link is now active!) by taking one of four elevators (two that go to service corridors and two for guests). The lift doors open into the Skyreach Room, a classy space made breathtaking by large windows set into the vaulted ceiling, providing a shining view of the Armada orbiting Absalom Station and the galaxy beyond. A low stage with black skirting and a sleek podium overlooks the room from the far end of the hall.

A dozen or so guests, representing a surprising array of races, mingle in twos and threes, while servers in sharp vests bring around a variety of bizarre snacks and drinks. A curly-haired AV technician arranges the wiring along one side of the stage, and Luwazi stands at the other side speaking with a damaya lashunta man.

~~~~~
GM Instructions: To represent your time schmoozing and chatting at the gala, we are now going to engage in a form of "social rounds". These will be conducted in a more abstract way than combat rounds. Your goal is to make a good impression with the five individuals to whom you have been assigned.
You do not know what type of skill an individual might respond best (or at all) to, so in lieu of making an attempt to influence a guest "blindly", you can attempt a "discovery" check (using Sense Motive). You can still try to influence someone without first making a discovery check, but if you pick a skill that they do not respond to (or worse, one that they are biased against), you run the risk of making it more difficult to influence that person later on.
These guests are here to enjoy a gala, so repeated (a.k.a. "boring") uses of the same skill on the same guest will result in an increased DC.
In addition to making influence attempts and discovery checks, you may choose to "aid another" on an influence check, but doing so uses your action that round. Luwazi's notes to you suggest that you will have enough time to make several attempts, and then a moment aside for her to let you know how you're doing. Once a guest has been completely won over to your charms, you will know it.
If you have any questions about this mechanic, please feel free to ask in the Discussion tab. But, barring that (also pending Torqe's introduction) - we now move into the High Society Gala portion of our show!
SOCIAL ROUND 1:
Iteration-177: Agender android. Iteration-177 wears their sleek and thin dark hair pulled back to a pony-tail at the base of their neck, in a sharp contrast to their silvery skin and the android’s signature circuitry pattern shining nearly white. They wear Absalom Station’s latest fashions in shades of black, white, and gray.
Naiaj: Female bleachling gnoome. Naiaj makes no concessions to the formality of this event; she wears her usual carbon skin armor, datapad never out of sight and wrist-based comm unit constantly blinking with updates. She wears her gleaming white hair cropped close, and despite her small size, she looks as if she could stare down a team of hardened vesk mercenaries.
Royo: Male ysoki. Royo wears immaculate formalwear about 20 years out of date; his tawny fur is beginning to go silver around his whiskers and paws. He wears elegant spectacles, having refused corrective surgeries due to the hours or even days in which he would be unable to read following such a procedure. Tucked beneath one arm is a small folio of actual physical paper. He stands among a circle of scholars engaged in an exuberant discussion of esoteric topics.
Ykris (and Jhireu): Parasitic isopod. Ykris appears as an iridescent, segmented insect clinging to the scalp of a cleancut, immaculately dressed half-elf man. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that many of Ykris’s spiny legs pierce the man’s skin and deeply into his flesh, particularly along the base of the man’s skull and down the back of his neck.
Zo!: Male undead elebrian. Originally one of Eox’s native elebrians, Zo! retains the characteristic appearance of that race even in undeath: an elegant build with refined features and an extended cranium. His face now bears a permanent rictus grin, which adds another level of enthusiasm to his exaggerated interactions.
He is almost constantly talking about his productions or means to achieve better ratings, and he seems to be working on the early stages of a new reality broadcast. As he is keeping an eye out for new talent for this upcoming project that has a lot of “action scenes,” Zo! would particularly be impressed by demonstrations of Acrobatics or Athletics checks, or even a showy display with a weapon (making an Attack roll against a non-gala-guest-or-staff target of your choice). You also think that if any of your companions were icons, they might be able to "talk shop" with Zo! in addition to the above.
Triskid: You approach Iteration-177 and begin talking about Ibra and religious artifacts. Iteration-177 is surprisingly charming for an android, quick with a compliment or a joke. They are clearly far more interested in mingling with members of the Starfinder Society than the corporate dignitaries in attendance this evening! Even though you can tell that the android is definitely keen on the topic you brought up, you didn't seem to gain any traction with them at this time.
X5NSA: Naiaj simply nods to you when you approach, her eyes leaving the screen of her own computer to scan across yours for a brief moment. "Being a Starfinder agent isn't all about hacking corporate systems, trekking across desert planets in the Vast to find crashed wrecks, and fighting creatures on derelict ships on the edge of ethereal storms," she begins, her words stoic and serious. "As evidenced by my presence here, even we who prefer to focus on the harsh calculus of operations and logistics must be ready to adapt to changing circumstances and arenas beyond what we are used to. I recommend you continue your work learning these sorts of things as you progress as a field agent."
Despite her utterly pragmatic and terse tone of voice, it's clear (even to an android like X5) that she cares deeply about the Starfinder Society’s members and strives to ensure their safety. She is currently distracted by numerous incoming data feeds, specifically citing issues with “the shipment from the drow on Apostae.” Naiaj refuses to go into further specifics on the dispute, discussing only her recently discovered displeasure at working with drow ambassadors.
X5NSA is fairly certain that not only is Naiaj "that type" - but that X5 has gotten off to a good start impressing the gnome venture captain with that display of technical proficiency!
As you already know, Royo is a member of the Forum, the elected ruling body of the Starfinder Society. He specializes in scholarly affairs, but unlike the data sniffers of the Dataphiles, he focuses on physical documents. Denouncing the impermanence and mutability of digital data, he maintains a massive personal archive of physical manuscripts and tomes spread across facilities in countless star systems.
He seems to enjoy focusing conversations on specific details of topics rather than simply working from digest (or, one might say, abstract pun intended) versions. Aloof at first, he seems to show admiration for those who can hold their own on scholarly topics, such as Life Science, Physical Science, Culture, and Mysticism (making rolls to recall knowledge, including the reduction of DCs that some themes grant on those sorts of checks). You also easily determine that he is rather dismissive of those with open cybernetic augmentations.
Triskid finds that Iteration-177 seems to be open to talking about the effect that modern societies have on religious worship...but the shirren mystic quickly finds that he is out of his depth...and Iteration-177 starts looking around the rest of the event, a clear sign that Triskid has *not* made a good impression so far.
X5NSA isn't able to sense much...other than that Naiaj is very busy, and about as difficult to "read" as an android might be.
Ytchkn approaches Royo and the other elderly scholar types, all of whom initially seem annoyed by the intrusion. It's not long, however, before Ytchkn brings up the Ghibrani, which definitely catches Royo's attention. "I read a report on that, yes!
This conversation contains major spoilers for scenario #1-03:
"While the cultural dimorphism you observed is indeed fascinating and worthy of future study, it is sadly just another data point, or nail in the coffin...yes, once long ago people were buried in wooden boxes held together with small sharpened spikes of iron with peened back-sides...where was I? Oh, yes, information flow! This is yet another data point that supports the idea that all information should be free and made accessible to all. Why, an entire sub-field in counterfactual history could probably be devoted to the plight of the husks you describe, if only their ancestors had access to the same information as those who exploited them! This is precisely why I cannot stand to work with Historia-7 and her "dataphiles"...they want to control and restrict the flow of information, which I cannot agree with!"
This is a bad news / good news situation. Bad news - you can only make one roll per "round" towards trying to influence a guest. Good news - the first thing you rolled was an 18 on the dice, so that's what your roll was! Ytchkn knew that Culture was a solid way to impress Royo, so let's go with that! 18 + 8 (Culture) = 26!
Ytchkn is certain that she has definitely started to impress Royo!
Sigma Mu: Telemetry data guides you to the closest refreshment table, and one of the nearby waiters, who inform you that the person you indicated is indeed drinking water.
Viper 6 approaches Zo!, whose rictus-like grin only gets bigger at the acrobatic display! "Wow, without even a running start! You're quite the athlete, I can tell! I've got a real eye for talent...well, socket, really! Hah!" Zo! punctuates his undead joke with a finger snap, which causes micro-speakers woven into the fabric of his coat to create the sound of a rimshot!
"Say, you look like you're ready for a scrap just about any time, am I right? Ooh, instead of a fight, try this purple thing and tell me how it tastes!" Zo! grabs a strange three-pronged tentacle treat that sits atop a rice cake covered in some kind of purple jelly, and offers it to Viper. "They say I'm a man of taste, but I keep telling them, I can't!"
...rimshot
"You know..." Zo! leans in close as Viper is trying the invertebrate hors d'oeuvre, "Not a lot of people know this, but I'm throwing a lot of my credits to the Society to help them explore a little place they're calling 'Salvation's End' - great name, right? Anyway, I've almost closed the deal with Elsebo over there to get a joint venture together, a televised reality show following the first Starfinders to explore it! You should totally take part in that!" Zo!'s grin gets bigger still, and he lets out a contented sigh when Viper reports how the little snack tastes, as he himself can clearly not take part in such a repast any longer.
Viper 6 is sure that she has begun to positively influence Zo! - even moreso because he thinks she would be a great candidate to explore Salvation's End!
"While your gesture is taken with the kindness you offered it with, I must inform you that it is my host - Jhireu - who was drinking water. My nutritional needs are not readily fulfilled in this place."
Despite the difficult opening (that increases the difficulty of making a connection with Ykris), Sigma Mu's knowledge of life forms across the Pact Worlds and the Vast do seem to get Ykris talking! Ykris is outgoing and eager to speak with Starfinders in attendance. It has no reservations about explaining its relationship to its host, if
asked, and allows Jhireu sufficient autonomy to confirm the relationship; though Jhireu is utterly deferential to Ykris and rarely acts of his own volition, the two get along well.
You learn that Ykris is a representative of CeriCore Labs, a biotech firm that specializes in direct neural connections. Ykris’s work on Absalom Station typically involves lobbying and connecting with agents from other cybernetic and biotech firms, and its own research are focused on biotech and other augmentations/implants into living creatures.
