Sure, I have no issue. It's just that I couldn't personally fine a use for more 1st level options.

Those three options sound great, let's do it.

Thanks for the input on the rituals. I'll take you thoughts into account and think about it overnight. We're headed into some uncharted territory with these rituals and I think there needs to be some definite risk on the caster's part.

The target and duration were cut/paste errors... thanks for catching that.

Female Half Orc Oracle (Spirit Guide) 8 (Bound Soul: Sorcerer (Cross-blooded) 1) l HP: 71/71 l AC: 14 (Current AC: 18)/T: 13/FF: 11 (15) l Fort: +6, Ref: +9, W: +11 (+2 v Illusions) l Init: +5 l Per: +20 (+22 in dim or lower light); Darkvision 90' l Movement: 30

I definitely concur that there should be real risks since the rewards are also real. I just don't think auto-success or auto-failure are particularly fun or interesting. Having a something drawn to a ritual's failed Planes check? That's interesting. Getting a negative or mixed bag secondary effect because of a natural one on spell craft check during a conversion, interesting. Even getting smacked with a spell blight or causing a primal event would be more interesting going forwards than autofailure.

One thing I would ask is that when we successful identify a relic that has most recently been bonded by a mortal that their HD be included in the info on the wiki. That will be a great ease to my bookkeeping.

Bright Tower Maps | Last Haven Table #1 Maps | Last Haven Table #2 Maps

Updated the Bows with the gnoll's basic HD. I'm going to work on some crit success and crit failure options for both the skill checks and the ritual in general.

Thanks! That is a huge help! Thank you for your flexibility in making a table for crit successes and failures for rituals and skill checks. I think that will be so cool.

I've collected the outstanding questions and issues that accumulated over the weekend to help out.

1. How many essences did the horn give up? Did the bard know the Secure Shelter spell that Garidan so craves?

2. What does Mal's staff do with that one ability that changes based on the Diviner's children?

3. The question about the GP value of a small container of gum arabic?

4.The legend lore results.

5. Secondary abilities, if any, from the illusion essence or Garidan's new bond the buckler.

And because I cannot help myself a new question.

6. Was the gnoll commander who Niyut threw from the walls of High Mark Keep and then she slew with Truk and Gruskorb bonded to the ax? I know that if you bond a relic against the will of its patron spirit it will punish you. His hands were frostbit despite having cold resist from a Water Essence. Was this because of a spiritual conflict from a bond or because the ax just hated him? If it is the former, what's his HD?

@Garidan:

I have some questions for you too!

1. Do you regret bonding the shield over the feather?

2. Are you concerned that none of your companions in the other campaign seem that curious how the wizard survived, what he ate, or why he doesn't know the state of his shop? That the paladin didn't even bother detecting evil to see if perhaps he is undead shrouded in illusions?

On the "Wonders" page, I think it should say that the Sage Staff is bonded to Malthazir.

@Niyut:

I have some answers for you! :D

1. Nope. The feather is cool--and man, I do wish I'd gotten around to having someone identify it sooner--but the buckler is going to measurably affect my defense as I enhance it. While there aren't a great many shield abilities I can put on (most specify either light or heavy, or metal shields), that's quite alright. I'm sure Valjoen and I can work out some fun tricks for it.

2. OoC? Yes, very much so. But I'm trying to avoid the sin of metagaming by raising that issue with the other players. IC, Kayin is dubious but--as you've probably been following along--his doubts go in other directions. Having muffed his Sense Motive check didn't help either.

2 Essences; 1 Transmutation and 1 Ethereal Essence.

Niyut wrote:

I'll assume, someone succeeds with one of your obscene Spellcraft checks. At the beginning of each day, Malthazir can spend 15 minutes communing with the life essence of Ealiannë's children bonded to the staff. He will randomly (1d11) determine which child emerges. That child's ability will be usable for the day.

Does anyone want the Arcane Essence? Garidan, since it's transmutation do you want to try to create a weapon effect that makes your weapon shift to be a special material? Basically, I would prefer to be in the running for an actual ethereal essence at some point.

Transmutation essence to induce weapon material shifting? That's not a bad idea, that. Since Valjoen has made it clear that the Hazard of Transmutation will be involved in Garidan's efforts to tinker with that.

And I feel the sting of not having that one certain kind of essence you need. So, while a potentially "bard-y" ethereal essence would be nice--even if it didn't have the bardiness, I could also combine it with my remaining item essence to get my second UMD skill boost--I shall take the Transmutation essence.

Even if Valjoen isn't up for that idea, or the idea has to be put off on account of weapon essence limits, I can still hold the essence for later, trade it, or even use for something else. (I just love how the essences encourage creative thinking in their use, I really do.)

Thank you!

I want to be clear, Arcane Essences are great, but I have a list of ways I want to improve my items.

Speaking of which, I have two ideas I would like to run by you, GM.

1. Phantom Dragon I: When using Shadow Dragon Aspect, or a similar spell, the character adds her Cha modifier to her attack rolls instead of either her Str or Dex modifiers.

(The idea being that because she is wreathed in a semi solid illusion that can attack, she is directing its attacks via force of will not her strength or dexterity.)

How many essences and of what kinds would this take?

2. Primal Theorems: The character can now apply Metamagic to Spontaneous Death Magic. (Secondary Effect): Eszira's Whispers: The character no longer needs to be holding the Liber Sanguinem to use Spontaneous Death Magic.

How many essences and of what kinds would this take?

I'd say that would be the equivalent of a feat... 1 Life Essence or possibly the combo of an arcane essence and an ethereal essence.

Again, I'm thinking this is closer to a life essence feat or a combination of arcane essences.

Vis-a-Vis the proposed Primal Theorems, I'm kind of surprised that modifying the Spontaneous Death Magic would require a Life or Arcane Essence only because when Malthazir upgraded the level of spell that the staff could learn changing Spell Predilection that required two Ethereal Essences. What's the difference between these cases? (I'm not disputing the costing, I'm just curious.)

Vis-a-Vis Phantom Dragon I: Sounds good. Thank you!

No hard-and-fast rules here... just a general feel for the ability.

As a spontaneous caster, I'd give a little since you have the casting ability to spontaneously alter your known spells with metamagic. Since it is in the Liber Sanguinem, I'd say a Necromancy essence plus another random essence would do the trick.

Sure!

I'm basing the buckler's spellscribed ability off of what we established already for Garidan's armor, in that the spells he can add are either permanent by essence--they can't be swapped out once added, but can be upgraded to higher versions of that spell (if available) by adding more essences--or temporary as though scribing a scroll and the spell is expended upon use which leaves the slot open for a new spell.

It was also established that those temporary spells could be added by someone with the Scribe Spell or Brew Potion feats, but instead of the usual cost of doing so, it requires some special (and currently unspecified) campaign item(s) to do so. Once used, those spells are expended and the slot is open for a new spell to be added.

Basically, I can choose between locking a spell into a spellscribe slot (but can use it at least 1/day forever and possibly improve it) or leave the slot open (but have to pay some weird cost every time I want to put a spell there). For Garidan's breastplate, that's a pretty good deal right since I have six slots to work with.

However, the buckler only gets one slot for a spell (from its base AC bonus of +1) and filling that slot permanently isn't a very good use of such a limited resource. But paying the mystery cost every time could get insanely expensive, depending on what it is. So I'd like to permanently trade away the ability to add a spell via essence for the ability to add a spell without that special cost.

Ok, I'm following you now. So, anyone with Scribe Scroll can mark on the buckler with a piece of charred wood or you can rub the shield in oils made from Brew Potion. The spell is transferred into the buckler, and a UMD for spell completion by you can activate the spell. A druid can simply scribe on the shield in Druidic runes any spell they have prepared. This casts the spell for your completion later.

Like that?

Yep. And in return for that, as stated, the buckler can't add a spell using an essence, ever. (Maybe the wood doesn't like foreign magic being forced into like that or something, while a temporary marking that fades upon use is no problem, and it welcomes a druid's touch.)

And, as mentioned well back, I'd like as a secondary that druid spells involving plants get maybe a boost to their caster level when cast off of the buckler, because of the whole Great Chestnut thing.

Is there anything like that when she finds the new ritual fading into view on the pages?

They seem neat!

Thoughts:

1. I would change "fangs" to "tusks." to avoid confusion.

2. Some of the powers seem to reflect story stuff (Niyut and witchcraft) or be obviously helpful (Malthazir). Others are neat (Truk's), but don't have any obvious link to me to their backstory or play strategy. Where these randomly selected from a list and am I trying to make patterns where none exist?

3. The name of Garidan's first ability should obviously be Reclaiming My Time in tribute to Maxine Waters. Missed opportunity. :-p

They might randomly determined, but Garidan's is surprisingly well suited to him.

Rofl, let Valjoen get around to the stuff we've already thrown at him before throwing more his way.

See sentiment above ^^. ;-)

I hope everyone is having a Happy Passover/Easter Weekend.

:p I asked about my shield a week ago, so there.

And my weekend is, unfortunately, not terribly pleasant. My sister's sprog keeps picking up the most delightful bouts of cruds and passing them around to everyone else like party favors. This time around, I'm only dealing with a cough and sore throat, but it's aggravating. I typically only get really sick once a year, and otherwise I'm fine. But the sprog doesn't understand the rules and persists in gifting me with every last little thing he gets.

@GM: Has work slowed down or is it still going full throttle?

I'm betting full throttle, and him hanging on to the hood for dear life, lest he get run over by it :p.

Woo-hoo, my buckler is ready to go!

Only one question about the buckler's version of the spellscribed ability, does it waive the cost of using Scribe Scroll or Brew Potion to add a spell to it?

Yes, sorry, unless a rare or expensive item required. But basic gp costs covered. I'll update.

Damn, you're fast. Note that I edited the response for any rare or expensive component, but hte base gp cost associated with crafting is waived.

Lol, well I have been looking forward to my shiny new buckler for just a little while now, so I'm excited to get it properly squared away and accounted for on my character sheet.
