I've heard tell of a woman so beautiful that her face launched a thousand ships and plunged two nations into war, but as far as I know that's just mythology." he chuckles with a sidelong glance. "Miss Amaya, it has been my great pleasure to have had your company tonight. Tomorrow it is then, I will be very much looking forward to seeing you again."

Azhar nods, "Yes, though he worries me too." he pauses, looking over at Rev, "Possibly even a little more than you do." Azhar smiles at his brother.
Rev returns the smile. "Since when do I worry you?"

Not too long after the exchange between the very different brothers, Tarvi picks up her backpack walks over to Amaya. She whispers to the other girl.

DC 25 Perception:
"No one else may notice and you probably won't admit it, but you are happy to see him, aren't you?

A pause, "So why the heck aren't you talking to him?"

Before Tarvi walks away, she gently pushes Amaya in the direction of the brothers. She waves to the group as a whole and leaves with a mischievous little smile.

Amaya's head turns in the direction of Tarvi, her entire body in the posture of a glare. However the small Tien girl does move towards the pair. When she gets there, after a moment of very awkward silence, she asks the darker brother, "What do you do that would be so inimical to Larko's well being?"

She smiles, not entirely happily. "Hope yours was more useful than mine. All I got is that there are a bunch of tieflings in that building and we are SOL if we want to sneak in from the fields." She shakes her head, "They are overgrown enough that it would be hard for most of the people to move through easily, but not overgrown enough to provide cover from that damn bell tower.

In the night
"Don't want to go," she says sleepily. "And they are scared of you." More determined, but not fully conscious, "Really want to figure how to hurt them so they don't want me either."

Pharat 29 - before... when Tarvi realizes she is not invited for the raid on the bastards
After arguments that don't work, as a last effort. "Who is going to watch your back and keep you safe if I'm not there?"

Gravalax:
Sclavo, disturbed
"At night," his voice almost... offended. "It's bad enough that people can't go out at night without risking injury, death or disappearance. But if these people," the word tinged with disgust despite the begnin word, [b]"are going into people's businesses... which are attached to people's homes."

He looks over at Gravalax, catching the older man's eyes, "They won't have any place that is safe anymore."

Then he seems to catch the other part of what Gravalax said. "You and your friend need to be careful at night." Gruff, caring, even if he doesn't want to admit fully.

Cader Flowers
With one fluid movement she catches the orange half and tosses him half of the lemon. She pulls out one section of her own lemon, tosses into her mouth and bites down. The shock of sour sending a delighted shiver through her.

"Born here." Seeming to reference not only Westcrown by Rego Cader in particular, "I don't know if I have siblings, my mother was..." her voice trails away for a minute, but then comes back, steady, almost emotionless, "not a virtuous person. But she made sure that I was..." Another pause, as Mathalen looks at the beautiful plants that feed on death, "I had someplace I belonged when I was little, they made sure I learned what I needed to."

Rev:
Since Rev would know and you may want to use it later, the holy text of Sarenrae is 'The Birth of Light and Truth'. On that note, most copies have blank pages where the owner can write his/her own personal truth and enlightenment. Would Rev care if the book procured is new or used?

Janiven attending
She thinks about it for a bit as they travel along Rev's rounds. She is more knowledgeable than Larko when she interacts with the people along the way, but more reserved. More apt to explain and then encourage the children to experiment and try, rather than do the work for them.

"It might take a little bit of time, is there a rush or just as soon as I can swing it?"

Afternoon at Jask's
"Coffee is better." He agrees wholeheartedly. "But the only variety that grows around here is chicory. And, yes, I could get Mwangi coffee... but it loses something in the travel."

Jask examines his young friend, seeing the trouble beneath the surface. "However, I do have a bag that I've been saving for a difficult day. How about I brew that for you?" The old man knowing Rev will tell him, when Rev is ready.

As soon as all five of you are there, Arael starts to speak.

"I'm not sure how many of you already know about them, but there is bandit group that has been menacing stores and homes at night. But, even though this is removing the last shred of safety the people in this city can rely on, the dottari are looking the other way." He spits out the next word, "Corrupt ba.."

"Incompetent." Janiven corrects, her tone far cooler than Arael's more fiery one.

"Whichever." Arael regaining a calmer demeanor. "Even though they killed the weaponsmith on their last break-in," Arael's voice growing heated again, "AND his wife, asleep in the upstairs bed. The dottari have done nothing."

Janiven comes up, put a hand on her friend's shoulder. Then to the gathered group she says, "Which is why it seemed a good task for our group. The Bastards of Erebus represent a clear-cut case of where something needs to be done for the safety of the town and where the people who should be doing something are choosing not to."

"Thanks to a beggar who Arael has helped a number of times, we were able to find, and scout out, their lair."

"Cassian?"

Cassian nods. He opens his mouth. Shuts it. "Let's go," he says.

Night
"Sleep now, Tarv," Cassian murmurs. He doesn't sleep for the rest of the night.

Before the Raid
"Same person who normally watches my back," he says, putting the monkey on his shoulder.

Male Human Rogue 15/Shadowcaster 1

He speaks matter-of-factly with a distinct lack of emotion. "They're holed up in a church. About a dozen tieflings, plus one in the bell tower keeping watch, and making it nigh impossible to approach without an alarm being raised." Cassian places a silver piece on the table.

"There's a wide field around the church. Nowhere to hide. Not even Rygel could make it across without being spotted. The closest you get to cover are four outbuildings." He places four copper pieces in a rough semicircle.

"Doors locked, windows boarded up on all four. At the one farthest from the church, we have two voices upstairs. Sentries. Pass the time playing cards. In the next one, we have, I believe two animals. Light on their feet, and with claws. Not sure exactly what kind of animal, though. In this building on the left here, we have some kind of undead. I'm basing this on smell, so I couldn't give you an idea of what exactly we're looking at. On this building on the right, we have probably the best guards. They probably knew something was out there, or else they were waiting for me to try to come in."

Cassian bulls on ahead. "I suspect there are tunnels from one or more of these outbuildings leading into the church, although I don't know which ones. As I see it, we have several options."

"The first is a frontal assault. This will get us all killed in short order."

"The second is a fast assault into one of the outbuildings, kill all inside and hope for tunnels. The best option is probably the one with the cardplayers, since as you can see it's farthest away, and it shares a wall with the animal house. So it's a good bet there are tunnels there. Failing that, we could try the undead place, assuming Rev can destroy or control the undead silently."

"The third option is my favorite. These outbuildings have stone foundations but wooden walls. We barricade the doors from the outside burn them to the ground. When the tieflings in the church come out to help their friends, we kill them. Or, say they stay in the church. Fine. The halfling kills the sentry in the guard tower and we go over the walls, using the fire to blind them."

Sense Motive DC 20:
Rev's curiosity peaked at the word -Erebus-. Yet he is somewhat annoyed at the 'need to know' way this situation was being dealt with. It would have been nice to have some advance notice that various people are running amok doing things for an upcoming job. Not that he had any right to be annoyed, he wasn't even from this town, nor really part of this conspiracy.

Male Aasimar Ranger Skirmisher 16

Azhar listens with grudging respect for Cassian's ability to have gained this information and for the plans he has suggested, "I like what you have brought forth," he says, "however, from experience with my brother, I can tell you my vote would be for your second option. Tieflings do not burn easy." He chuckles silently and winks at his brother...then laughs as Rev brings it up as well.

He turns back to Cassian, "By the way, if even Rygel, could not "make it across without being spotted", just how do you know this?" he says not accusingly, but genuinely curious.

Male Tiefling

"So you say they are called the bastards of Erebus, and they are tieflings. Well, not sure if this is useful, but Erebus is the third layer of Hell. It's ruled by the arch devil Mammon. Erebus a treasure trove of diamonds and the like. Mammon is basically an accountant. He spends his time in sewers under the city Dis. His shtick is avarice, watchfulness, wealth... that kind of thing. Usually his minions use short spears. ...either these guys are descended from Devils that serve Mammon, or they like what he represents and worship him, or that's what they want us to think."

A pause, he agrees with Azhar's assessments. "If they're all Tieflings, fire won't bother them much. Neither will cold nor electricity."

"Since you are clearly our intellectual superior, why don't you explain your plans using small words, in more detail, with reasons behind your choices, so that those of us who can't read your mind might understand what you're saying." Rev says evenly.

"I've said my piece," Cassian says. "Planning sieges is outside my pay grade anyway."

Cassian:
"I could hurt monsters... or the shadow things." Leaving unsaid that the idea of hurting people is hard for her. Her arms wrap around him, "I don't like that you are going into this without anyone other than Rygel that you trust." She smiles up at him, "I don't need you to fight fair, but you better win."

Arael looks like he wants to comment a few times on the planning but is stopped by Janiven's hand on his shoulder. She listens intensely, waiting to see what option she will be helping you with.

Out with Janiven

She nods, "Blackmarket normally ups the price. Religious text, new... Can you swing twenty or twenty-five gold?"

"Yes. Do you want it now?" He asks quietly. "Although on second thoughts, it might be more interesting to have something with someone elses's thoughts scribbled in the margins. See if you can find a used one."

She looks over at the tyke, putting 'complicated' knots into the snare rope. Half-smile, "I think I'm too aware of how easy it is for them to lose the people they depend on. Makes me want to make sure that they have some kind of idea of how to survive."

Rev nods after a moment's contemplation. "In the end, everyone is basically on their own. It's good of you to teach them self sufficiency. Not all children... have someone to depend on."

Mmmm... Coffee.

The old man looks tempted for a moment, but shakes his head at the cigar offer.

He looks concerned but interested, always intrigued by Rev's growth, so much faster than his own hard-won power. "mmmm... Maybe we can test it out here, in controlled conditions rather than having to risk it in the heat of combat?"

A pause, "Or is it something that would require a stronger victim than myself?"

He thinks on Jask's health before answering in Rev's experience, can Jask survive a 2d6 negative energy burst? If so...

"You'll need a small nick or cut. As part of the test." He hands Jask his dagger.

When Jask is ready... If Jask puts down his drink, and injures himself, ever so slightly with the dagger, Rev will concentrate, and burst. But he will burst positive energy. 1d6 ⇒ 2 And his expression will be completely amazed that he didn't just kill his mentor, because he was half afraid that wouldn't work.

GM:
He returns the hug, the gloom parting for a moment. "Yes ma'am," he says. "Maybe some monsters. The bulk looks to be tieflings, though. People by most definitions."

"Well, I suppose Rev & I could make a distraction, draw the attention of anyone up top, enough for Melilot or someone to take 'em out. Maybe even get Rev inside since he is a tiefling after all, maybe along with you sneakier types. Open it up for the rest of us. ... Perfectly willing to take on your option 3, as well, but how do you think we'll be able to barricade them in to all of the out buildings and set them ablaze without being seen? If you think you can do it, great, if not I'm going with simpler is better and sticking with option 2 for my vote." then he continues muttering under his breath, "of course I also wouldn't mind walking straight up to their door and knockin' all nice like, but that's just me."

Male Tiefling

A thought which is not going to work, but get's voiced anyway, "If we had more time, we could try to infiltrate them from the inside. If any of you have connections that would allow us to figure out how they accept new members, if they do. Although, that's probably more of a long term con. Unlikely to work very fast."

"Fine by me. Then as I said, I believe this building here housing the cardplayers, and here, housing the animals, are our best option. And at risk of annoying any of you by repeating what I said earlier, the reason I think this is our best option is because they are farthest away and thus easiest to sneak up on. It is also two buildings in close proximity, so if one does not have a tunnel, the other might. I didn't previously mention that last part. I hoped it could be inferred. The door to the cardplayers, unfortunately, faces the church, so if we're going in that way, we will be in clear view of the belltower. This is a bad thing, since as Rev pointed out, tieflings see in the dark. Should the tiefling in the belltower see us, he -- or she -- will likely ring the bell, thus warning a baker's dozen fireproof and cold and electricity resistant tieflings of our presence. Our other option is the room with the animals. The door is on the side here, perpendicular to the church and still in sight of the belltower. Which we have previously established, is bad. Any door entry will have to be spearheaded by someone who can pick locks -- which I believe is only me -- or someone to kick in the door and loudly announce our presence."

Cassian takes a deep breath. "Everyone still with me? All right. The other option are some second story windows in the cardplayers' building that do not face the church! So anyone up for it can scale the wall and come in through those windows. The reason we would do this is so that we are not in sight of the belltower, and the aforementioned bell ringer who can see in the dark -- remember, he's probably a tiefling -- and will ring the bell if he sees us. If we can get into the room quickly, probably leading with Azhar and Melilot, since they are our best fighters and thus best able to deal with armed conflict, or myself and Melilot, who are the sneakiest and thus best able to take our enemies unaware, then we can kill or incapacitate the enemy, which I believe to consist of two tieflings who like to play cards."

Rev hears Cassian out.

Sense Motive DC20:

Rev suppresses a 'smart ass' thought before he can voice it, in regards to Cassian's explanation just now.

Azhar glances at his brother, "Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Tieflings better than human sight at night is limited to about 60' or so. How far is it to these outbuildings again?"
