Yes, it does, perfectly.
I knew it! So, I'd like to clarify a few things. This is the lab job, we need to secure the lab and get a data packet. Then we have to find this escaped clone. We dealt with all the antennae we needed to already, right?
group text chat, in case this format isn't apparent
3yeZ>> Hoi chummers, gonna shoot an email for clarification from Johnson. I'll fwd a copy if you want, lemme know. Not gonna give too many details, don't want two Johnson's paying us to stop ourselves.
TO: <Fixer>
SUBJ: Clarification needed
MESSAGE:
RE: "secure lab" what does J want? Lock the doors? Level the place?
RE: "personnel recovery" what condition is minimum necessary? I have a hunch this person doesn't want to be recovered.
i am specifically omitting details of what we have seen so far in the lab, as well as the fact that these clones match the description of our recovery target.
* * * * *
Max scans the room with his whole host of senses, looking for a terminal with datastore access, traps and alarms in the room and particularly on the computer, and he looks to see what state these clones are in while he waits for a reply from the Fixer.
perception: 10d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 2, 2, 6, 5, 1, 5, 3) = 33 - 3 hits
He then uses his biomonitor to confirm or shoot down his own hunch that the blood on the commlink and medical implant match the blood signatures of the existing clones.
what test for accessing the datastore? INT + Computer?
depending on the state they want this mysterious person in, and the state they want the lab left in, we might be able to take one of these clones and deliver it to the Lone Star. I am particularly looking for information regarding this possibility, or the impossibility thereof in the replies from the Johnsons.

Retrieval of proof of ownership so that S-K can move back in.
INT+Computer
The subject to be recovered is to be as unharmed as possible, this is mission is for the feels. Try talking to the subject instead of guns blazing.
The clones all seem to be "alive" but nonfunctional. Spare parts perhaps?
The blood matches.
An armor jacket with the Janus logo seems to be missing as well as an Ares Predator V. The medical implant is a deactivated cortex bomb. The blood is older and does not provide any viable material link for astral tracking.

Max "3yeZ" |

Max uses his cybereyes to take photos of the clones in various profiles to aid in tracking the escapee. Enough photos to potentially get a 3D rendering via his trid projector, including some edits featuring a Janus jacket.
Continuing his modus operandi by communicating via secure chat, Max relays findings to the other members as he sits at the computer assuming no traps were found and begins typing.
not sure how he would be doing this stuff without a cyberdeck, i guess just looking at files the old fashioned way.
3yeZ>> Clones. Alive but nonfunctional, likely spare parts. I will look for proof of ownership on this computer, the data packet the worm wants. The blood is hers, looks like she cut out her own device, which was a cortex bomb. The others probably have one too, so be careful near them. Secure the area so we don't get ambushed. We need vis inside and out. She probably has a Janus jacket on and a Predator, too.
not sure how many are needed, so rolling a few checks
INT+Computer: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 3, 5) = 17 = 2 hits
INT+Computer: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 5, 3) = 13 = 1 hit
INT+Computer: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 1, 6) = 10 = 1 hit
After finding the objective data, Max looks for some profile of the woman, psychological or otherwise, to aid in their finding her. He also looks for a bit of paydata, if such is able to be captured without a cyberdeck, and only after finding his objective data. He will also look for data about copying minds over from clone to clone, and copy that into an empty datastick.

Rankev figures that Max seems to have this one covered. He steps just outside the door and takes as professional a stance as he can muster. >>right. I'll keep outside and talk our way out of any non-direct inqueries.<<

Liam McGregor |

>>Hnnh, freaky...
Wonder how she got loose? Figure she had outside help?
You could suspect it was a powerplay between corps, but maybe some o' th' staff got a soft heart or somethin'<<

![]() |

>>>Well, can't say this is the freekyest thing I ever did see, but the chain of events as a whole are certainly vying for the attempt. Yeah, let's be about it, collecting our erstwhile....ah...drek. Meeting. In the car. Now.>>>
Once everyone is piled in as well as they car, Power begins to muse. "Yeah, so, we ain't chasin' some exec's daughter that wanted a taste of some bad meat, this here is an honest-to-goodness cloned spare-part body that got away. She ain't gonna -wanna- come back. Her future is nothing but back in that tank to be carved up some day, if she's lucky. Drek, were it -me- in charge, as soon as I got claws on her I'd dice her up an' move the parts cheap.
Mind you, I ain't sayin' that we don't do dis. Guy's gotta eat. I'm just saying that our promises of "Come wit me if u wont to leve" ain't gonna hold as much water as they might some other day. I'll try t' wrangle her mind much as I can, but me like this an' she like that...let's just say I hope you boys packed some stun ammo."
Rankev gets his flask out and takes a long pull, gathering strength for the task to come.

Max "3yeZ" |

When Max finishes with the computer, he safely stows the files in a datastick on his person and closes the Janus door, locking it if possible (reverse-autopicking?).
Back at the car, Max response to Power. "Here's the thing. We gotta find her first. Second, the Janus job and the recovery job are from two different Johnsons, at least it appears that way. So there is a possibility that we have been paid by two separate interests who are at odds and don't realize they have paid the same crew. That is why i was deliberately vague in asking for clarification, I didn't want to tip them off because if either of them finds out, the lower bidder of the two isn't going to be happy."
"She geeks out, I have a stun glove and some handcuffs. We can chat her up and if that fails, you can do that if you want. I'm not so eloquent. If that fails, you can try to mojo her mind. If that fails, then we can try to stun her."

New snow seems to have stopped falling, and you’re pretty sure the roads haven’t gotten any more treacherous. Of course, the wind still blows the snow in ways that most other cities would call a blizzard.
The Maker Collective is not so much a mall as a small city in itself. It’s a network of strip malls and office buildings connected in a few places by canvas tunnels, almost like a giant hamster cage. It’s one of the few places in Chicago where the AR spam is as thick as the snow cover. You hear the sounds of workshops and hardware manufacturing even through the howling wind, and the occasional gust of wind brings the scent of ozone mixed with petroleum.
With the size of this place, you may be looking at a lot of legwork.

Liam McGregor |

"You know...if she is armed, it probably means she had help.
Sure, she COULD have stolen a weapon just now, but more likely someone gave her cash to buy one, or a weapon right away..."

![]() |

"Yeah, we know a armored jacket and a predator were missing from the lab, so she at least has those...
Y'know, it looks like she removed her cortex bomb, either on her own, shudder, or with help. That's not easy, and she might be looking for some Dochelp right away. How about we start looking in the clinics? Just ask around to see if anyone has seen a young woman wearing a Janus jacket with a head wound? There can't be too many with that description, right?
Um, could someone else actually talk? I'm way too hurt and not drunk enough to sell a Florida timeshare to an Eskimo. What? Wouldn't they want those things?"

Formed by like-minded scientists and students of the former Northwestern University in Evanston (Northside), the Maker Collective has become the Corridor’s own gadget center—though some say it’s more like a whole district of mad science labs. Industrial noise, funny-colored acidic clouds, and the odd explosion commonly occur throughout the collective, as many techno-geeks make do with improvised appliances and equipment or makeshift ventilation. Nevertheless, the collective’s reputation for creating all kinds of useful appliances and gadgets from scrap and recycled materials has spread throughout the Corridor and draws people to the Maker’s weekly bazaars.
Should also be noted that this is a Hacker Haven and there is a drug refinery. How do you wish to proceed?

Max "3yeZ" |

i think Power has the right idea. Hit up the Docs and see if a patient matches.

Liam McGregor |

"Right, so next idea might be to hit up a place you'd go to get information, like maybe information how to get out of Chicago.
And it'd have to be a bit more hush hush than just going to a travel agency."
"Or, maybe she'd need some drugs, either for pain or just to keep herself going?"

![]() |

Power nods. "Ya, drugs might be the next stop. To get out she'd need the means to do so, either cash or transport. Oh, well, 'course she might be half-way to Azlantia by now if she decided to forgo cash and use...other wares as barter."

At the drug refinery, the runners can buy any drug with Availability up to 6 (which is any of the drugs in SR5 except deepweed). Other workshops rebuild and refurbish all sorts of gear, but the Makers are good enough that the gear counts as new gear in all respects, including price. Just as with the drugs, runners can buy most gear with Availability up to 6 at book cost.
Workers at the drug refinery have seen a woman matching Sam’s description in the last few days. Sam has been working there enough to just barely afford a squat in one of the rooms in the attached office building. She is quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn’t have much from the outside except the armor jacket and scrubs she wears.

Max "3yeZ" |

3yeZ>> Let's head that way, scope her place. If you don't wanna do the talking, I will do it, and you secure the hallway. Anyone have a flash-bang?
how much for a flash-bang if no one has one? i think 100Y in HL

Max "3yeZ" |

"The job wasn't to take her back to the lab, it was to take her to some Lone Star (or was it KE?) dude. The lab job is complete, as far as what was asked. If they wanted more, they should have been more forthcoming with details."

what are the surroundings like? She in a hallway? Her room? Any other people around? What were the details on the Johnson, if any, as well as the person we are to deliver her to?

Max "3yeZ" |

Max will alter his clothing's electrochromatics to more closely match the clothing of those he sees around. He will then walk up to the clone lady and strike up a conversation.
Maintaining a nonthreatening body posture, Max asks, "Hoi, chummer. Looking to escape the CZ? I've got your ticket out."
sorry, i know this has all the social grace of a rhino but i am not built for this sort of thing

![]() |

So ka, chummer. That's why I'm here. ;-)
Power hangs back, just enough to keep an eye on the young lady. When Max walks up, he subtly Influences her opinion, calling up a small kernal of deepest Trust within her, and nurtures it to flower just as he speaks.

Max departs her vicinity, going to sit in an area separate from the others as well.
3yeZ>>gonna be tougher than planned. Gonna have to snare her at her residence.

Max "3yeZ" |

yeah well i figure she might be desperate to get out, and Max also isn't a social dynamo, so it is probably fitting. though i imagined simply too gruff rather than rapey. i dont picture him as creepy, just a guy who literally doesnt care about feelings (low essence/humanity).

Max follows the girl, giving the others in his group a feed of their respective locations and loading alternate routes for them when possible so they can stay spread out.

Liam McGregor |

Bad Wolf>> So, how are we going to handle this once we get there? We might as well try to make up a rough plan before we reach the end of the road.
Are we making another offer, or do we go "loud" right away?

![]() |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Power follows Max following her. While he walks, he types furiously.
>>A plan now dawns. Our two obvious options are either talk or grab. Talking already went poorly, and grabbing isn't ideal. But what about a charade?
Liam, you could wait for the right moment, then approach her, saying something about, 'Now I've got you. Back to the lab with you!' but then, Max, who has already ID'd himself as someone who can help her escape, comes up "punches" Liam, then does some 'Come wit me if you want to live" thing, which she gratefully accepts, now that she "knows" that "they" have found her.
Best I got. Also the mostly-dead dwarf could observe the whole thing in case we need some desperate magic to keep the thing from going t$++ up."

Max "3yeZ" |

3yeZ>>wow. can't believe i didnt think of that. +1 that idea. I was just gonna get loud but this is better.

Liam McGregor |

Bad Wolf >> Geez, why do I have th' be th' bad guy? Aw hell, whatever. It's a plan, and not a bad one either.
But I'm warning you, if you break me nose, give me a black eye or loosen a tooth, there WILL be hell to pay."

![]() |

Ummmm, I think that is the plan. :p Liam, I think we can assume Max is in position. Why don't you go ahead and kick this off.
Power closes the distance a little in anticipation of Liam's Enter, Stage Left, so he can at least see Max and the girl.

Max "3yeZ" |

3yeZ>> I was thinking of just tapping you with my shock glove and you playing it up like it knocked you mostly down and out long enough for us to getaway on my bike.

Liam McGregor |

Bad Wolf sighs to himself, irritated but at the same time resigned to this being the best plan they can come up with at this time.
Making sure he got Max and the girl in sight, he steels himself for the confrontation.
Bad Wolf >> Going in hot, be ready to step in and be the knight of the hour.
Bad Wolf walks briskly up to the girl.
"Found you! Thought you could get away eh? Back into the tank with you. Hope you enjoyed your brief romp in the free."
Here he moves to grab her arm.
