Ranek Clifton |
The tracks also branched down both of the other paths at the split before the room with the dissolved adventurer and after the screaming heads.
Marcus of Torm |
This place is certainly a completist's nightmare! You could be right of course, but I'm hoping the tracks we're following are those of the adventurers. If not... Well lets hope we don't end up as dinner!
Marcus frowns at the twisty tunnels, "These tunnels are proper maze, I think this one might switch back on us. Best be careful as we round the corner." he whispered to his companions as he moved forwards, trying to follow the tracks whilst staying alert.

With some care, and not too many false turns, the company forged ahead through the mines. It took perhaps a quarter of an hour, but at last they followed the tracks -or some tracks- over rough terrain and around bends to what seemed to be the end. Just ahead of them, flickering light came from around a corner.
Ariyana Dawn |
Ari makes sure her bow is at the ready with an arrow. She strains to hear anything that might clue them in to what awaits them around the corner.
Perception (listening for voices or other sounds): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Lightfooted Barra |
"A light, this deep in the mine? The dwarves would no better than I, but that's a trap. Barra whispers, exchanging his torch for another sword.
Ranek Clifton |
Ranek, sword in hand, pauses as well, attempting to listen for any voices or signs of being snuck up on.
Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (11) + 0 = 11
Thurvek Noclan |
Thurvek grunts softly in agreement, holding his battleaxe at the ready.
Marcus of Torm |
Marcus nodded along with the others. There was nothing else to be done, so he cautiously moved forwards towards the light.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Without knowing what we encounter, if anything, it's hard to RP more at this moment :)

[dice=Perception]1d20 + 6Without knowing what we encounter, if anything, it's hard to RP more at this moment :)
Ariyana and Marcus heart muttering ahead, not in Illuskan, and a mix of something dry and hard rattling against stone and heavy footfalls. The latter were louder than they'd expect for humans.
If you want to sneak up and peek around the corner, I'll need Sealth rolls. :)
Ariyana Dawn |
Ari's not the best at stealth either, but she'll go forward if others do so as well.
If so... Stealth: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Bolkvar Stonebeam |
Bolkvar stands back and to watches as Ariyana peaks around the corner. He holds his hand up and whispered ”Holds. Let the lass scout it out. Too many light feet can make quite a sound.”
Ranek Clifton |
Ranek stays back, watching carefully as Ariyana creeps forward. He isn't exactly one for sneakiness, so he'd let her handle it.
Thurvek Noclan |
While Ari scouts, Thurvek continues to guard our flank.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Marcus of Torm |
"Truthsayer, watch over her." whispered Marcus as Ariyana ghosted ahead. He tensed ready to come to her aid if needs be.
Lightfooted Barra |
"You underestimate how light my feet can be." Barra says with a smirk before peeking out as well.
Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Samnell |
Ari and Barra peek in on a large room. A huge statue of a dragon reared up afainst the far wall, its wings spread wide and its eyes, blue gemstones of great size, glinted in the chamber's light. Before it stood a huge copper bowl filled with leaping fire, raised five feet off the ground on a stone block. The ceiling arched thirty feet above. Stone debris littered the floor.
A goblin, probably the same one from the door, stood near to the bowl, muttering intently to a pair of huge conglomerations of bones as large as a troll. Each had many skulls, spines, arms, and legs all tangled together in a vaguely humanoid form. On the other side of the bowl stood two living trolls, both watching the goblin with bored expressions.
Ariyana Dawn |
Ari's eyes widen as she takes in the scene before her. Whatever the two abominations were near the goblin, they needed to be destroyed. That would likely require the group's full strength.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 (Seeing if there's anything else to observe in the room.)
After examining the room for a few moments, Ari retreats as quietly as she can to the rest of the group and informs them of what she and Barra saw.
Assume Ari more or less verbatim gives the details described in Samnell's post.

Bolkvar rolled his shoulders to loosen his muscles. If those bones were going to walk again, then he was going to have to pulverize them.
Ariyana Dawn |
I should probably roll a knowledge check too, huh? Same modifier for arcana, religion, dungeoneering, and planes, so just pick whichever is useful in this case.
Knowledge Check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

Disturbed by the scene vividly evoked by Ariyana, Marcus offers a devout prayer to Torm before considering what manner of dragon might be worshiped in this foul place.

[dice=Kn:Religion with guidance]1d20+7+1
Marcus knows that many isolated groups, humanoids, and even some humans and elves have been known to worship dragons. Most dragons don't seem inclined to dissuade them, but more civilized sorts tend to keep their devotions secret. It could really be any sort of dragon, though he doesn't think that goblins or trolls would worship a noble sort.

Ari doesn't see anything else. On consideration, she thinks that the bone things are some sort of undead or golem.
Samnell |
[dice=Knowledge (arcana) for described bone conglomerations]1d20+10
If Knowledge (religion) instead, lower the result by 1.
Ranek and Bolkvar, like Ari, think the bone things are some kind of undead or golem. That they are many skeletons together argues for a golem, but they've read of necromancers who modify existing undead and even liches who do such work on themselves after much work experimenting on others. It's unlikely that many bodies would animate at once spontaneously and merge so, though it might have happened in a great, shared catastrophe where all die within moments or entangled in spell fields.
If it was a golem, which they thought somewhat less likely, then they had worse news still. Most golems were all but untouched by Art and mighty enough to slay a band of seasoned adventurers. In principle, that might be the simpler Art since the bones would just be so many parts, but binding elemental spirits or other sentience to animate golems took considerable skill at delicate enchantments.
It's possible either way that the creatures may be undead enough to share the usual vulnerabilities of the walking dead.
Thurvek Noclan |
Thurvek looks to his dwarven friend and nods grimly, pulling his holy symbol from under his shirt to lay upon his armor.
Ariyana Dawn |
Knowing a bit about undead and/or being supplied such information from her companions, Ari switches out her current arrow for a blunt arrow. Skeletons tended to do poorly against such ammunition. Hopefully these enemies would also be susceptible.
At Barra's suggestion, Ari says, "Yes. We should probably do a countdown so we all charge at the same time. Maybe we can take them by surprise."
Ranek Clifton |
Ranek nods. "I have some magic that should be valuable against the trolls left."
Marcus of Torm |
Marcus grinned approvingly at Ranek, "Likwise I shall call on Torm's aid for this endeavor."
@Samnell how narrow is the tunnel? Would marcus have to squeeze if he cast enlarge person? He's thinking of casting that and shield of faith before going in.

It's ten feet wide. Also I should have said that the map is now up to date. :) However, casting is noisy so you might want to pull back a ways if you're going to do that.
Marcus of Torm |
Well they're minutes per level buffs so I think Marcus can afford to back up a little.
Ranek Clifton |
Ranek is ready to go when everyone else is. I'll activate the shield wand once we move, since it will only last 1 minute.
Aldondrick Volharan |
Aldon nods at his allies. He breathes deeply and begins to summon aid for the group.
Astral Construct I with Buff Ability (extra 5 HP). Full round action.

I should have just told you that you had a surprise round and gone with it. Ah well. I think I have everyone but Bolkvar, but if I don't or you want to change something give me a scream.

Ariyana Dawn |
With the battle upon them, Ari takes a deep breath and adjusts her grip on her bow. Stepping into line of sight of one of the trolls, Ari pulls back her bow string to its limit. If these were child-killers or even just child-kidnappers, Ari has no plans to show mercy. There's only one way to deal with such creatures: to put them down.
The arrow flies perfectly from Ari's bow and soars toward its target. The shaft lodges in the troll's body almost up to the feathers of the shaft. Ari seems a bit surprised with herself. She had expected the arrow to hit, but hadn't expect it to hit that hard. Ari reaches for another arrow, knowing it will take more than one to fell all the evil beings before the party.

Surprise Round. Move action: Move next to Ariyana.
Marcus of Torm |
Looking at the map, there's no way Marcus can get into melee with a standard action.
Marcus boldly enters the room and bellows, "By the Truesayer this den of evil will be cleansed!"
Bolkvar Stonebeam |
Can’t see said map. Only have phone atm due to moving across country. Can he charge? And if not how much movement to get into combat? My apologies...
