Ringtail's Night Below Group A(boleth)

Game Master Ringtail

1 to 50 of 144 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

I'll be running a PF version of the old 2e AD&D Night Below boxed adventure set in Varisia. Character statistics will be point buy (15 points). Each character will get 2 APG traits in addition to an extra campaign trait from the list below. Everything from the Core Rulebook and the APG is fine. Material from other sources may be allowed on a case by case basis, but if it isn't in the PRD it'll need to be written up so I can read what it does. I'm looking for 5 to 6 committed players and will keep recruitment open until Monday (9/5) when I'll choose the group that I like for the adventure the most. Feel free to ask any questions you have about the adventure as well.

Bonus Campaign Traits:

Dark Hunter:
You are bane to undead and those that would create such abhorrent beings. You gain a +1 trait bonus to attack rolls against undead and treat any DR possessed by undead as 5 lower for determining your damage. In addition, you gain a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge Religion checks and treat Knowledge Religion as a class skill. Finally you gain a +1 bonus on saving throws against the spells and effects of undead.

Dragon Slayer:
You’ve a personal vendetta against a particular dragon or even all dragonkind and have spent your life in preparation to hunt the wyrm(s). Maybe even Inzeldren the mighty green dragon who calls the Varisia’s Harenshire home has crossed your path. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Reflex saves and are treated as having Evasion (Ex) (as the Monk ability, but works regardless of the type of armor worn) against breath weapons of any sort. In addition you gain a +1 trait bonus on Will saves against [fear] spells and effects, and cannot be detected by a dragon’s Blindsense (Ex) ability.

History Buff:
The colorful local history fascinates you. You gain a +1 trait bonus to Knowledge History and it is treated as a class skill for you. In addition, you may make all Knowledge checks untrained. Finally, a number of times per day equal to your INT modifier (minimum 1), when you make a Knowledge check, you may roll twice and take the higher result.

Miner:
You’ve spent years of your life toiling away in Carmen’s mines. Perhaps you were a criminal sent there to labor away your punishment, or maybe mining just came naturally to you. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge Engineering and Profession Miner checks and both of these are treated as a class skill for you. In addition, when using picks or hammers, you gain a +2 to your CMB when making a sunder attempt. Finally, you are at ease when underground and gain a +1 trait bonus on Will saves as long as you remain so.

Palfrey Family Lineage:
You have a tangible link, however tenuous, to the Palfrey noble family of the Harenshire by blood or marriage. +1 trait bonus to Diplomacy, Intimidate, and Knowledge Nobility checks, and all of these skills becomes class skills for you. In addition, you gain a +2 trait bonus on Initiative.

Tauster’s Apprentice:
You are currently, or once were, apprenticed to the suspicious evoker Tauster in . His flair for the ostentatious has rubbed off on you and your evocation spells manifest in a wide range of kaleidoscopic colors and strange sounds. You gain a +1 bonus to your caster level when casting spells of the evocation school. In addition, whenever you use a spell trigger or spell completion item to use a spell effect from the evocation school, the item’s caster level is considered to be 1 higher.

Wanderer of the Harenshire:
You are used to the dangers of the wilderness and have even befriended one of the local rangers. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Fortitude saves, a +1 trait bonus on Survival checks and Survival is treated as a class skill for you. In addition depending on the NPC you have befriended you gain one of the following bonuses:
(Shiraz the Swanmay) - You gain a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge Nature Checks and Knowledge Nature is treated as a class skill for you.
(Garyld the Carpenter) - You gain a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge Geography and Knowledge Geography is treated as a class skill for you.
(Cooper the Farmer) - You gain a +1 trait bonus on Handle Animal and Handle Animal is treated as a class skill for you.

I will have something up for a bit for you Ringtail. I am thinking either a summoner or an armored hulk barbarian if you allow it. Yes I know summoner can be a little hard to deal with I am just going with an Eidolon focused summoner.

Any information you want on the armored hulk just ask.

Summoners are fine, just make sure you double/triple check your eidolon. It think that I've seen more improperly built eidolons than legal ones since the APG was released. ;) Armored hulk barbarian also seems balanced enough if you choose to go that route.

Yes I will make sure of that. Just have to figure out which to pick.

Heya Ringtail. Think I would like to play an Oath Bound Paladin (Oath against Undeath), if that is cool?

Shadow Lodge

Is there anything in particular that we should know about the game? I admit I'm too young to have played 2e, which probably explains why I don't recognize any of the names in the spoilers.

Now for some of the more usual questions

1. What level are we starting at? It seems like it's going to be level 1.
2. How are Hit Points going to be determined?
3. What is our starting gold?

Dotting to show interest. Will get a concept up later tonight or tomorrow.

The Exchange

Also dotting. Definitely interested.

Oath Bound Paladin Against Undeath is certainly a go, sir.

Good questions.

The group will be starting at level 1. There will not be XP handed out at all- characters will just level at certain points in the storyline. HP will be max at level 1 + CON modifier like normal, each level characters will gain half of the max of their hit die + 1 + CON modifier rather than rolling. Starting gold will be the max possible given by your class, rather than rolling or average.

As far as explaining major NPCs and the region go I will be working on a quick player's guide. Essentially the setting will be rural Varisia with a few small towns for the first part and underground caverns for the second 2/3s of the campaign.

Sunshadow21 here with an old character that I will need to rework tomorrow for the crunch, but it should give the basic idea. I'd probably go for dragon slayer for the campaign feat, making it so that a dragon was who killed his parents, and left him on the brink of death before being saved. There is a fair bit of stuff in there from Halfling of Golarion that would have to be reworked or have exceptions made for, and several places were adjusted to use the sling instead of the usual monk weapons.

Heh! Too cheeky to take Corpse Hunter AND Dark Hunter? They both give a +1 on attacks vrs Undead!

Dotting to show interest as well. Dragonborn3 and I have characters we played in an old PbP for RotRL. We are both interested in joining this game. Our characters are romantically involved, so we do have a certain chemistry together, he he.

Flitter Whistle wrote:

You COULD take them both, but seeing as they are both trait bonuses they wouldn't stack. ;P

DAMN! I did not read it right... Hmm... Ill keep the Corpse Hunter I guess and choose a diffrent Campaign Trait!

Do you want to keep them the same as when they were last played? I can see them leaving after helping beat the goblins down. I'll probably take Dark Hunter.

Dragonborn3 wrote:

Yeah...that would certainly work for me. As for the bonus trait, either History Buff, or possibly Tauster's Apprentice would work.

Shadow Lodge

Cool. It's going to be nice if we both get in! ;)

Ringtail: Do you have any problems with the Words of Power spellcasting system? I'd like to use it if I can.

Words of power are fine if you are willing to keep up with the complexity of the system.

The Exchange

You haven't said third-party is necessarily out yet, so I'd like to ask about the Soulknife.

Sorry, but I'd like to nix that. Sorry for any unnecessary reading.

Instead, would you be okay with a Magus, possibly, if allowed, a Bladebound/Kensai?

Liberty's Edge

PRESENTING Aerodus Aluain, Oath Bound Paladin of Pharasma. :)

dotting for Piousa, human magus escapade slave turned freedom fighter, more to come soon!

Here is Niug "Bone Breaker". I went with the armored hulk because the summoner I could not do what I wanted with him exactly. You also noticed that a weapon is missing that is because I was thinking of using a Earth Breaker which is a Shonati warhammer which will make sense after reading the back story. It is in the inner sea guide it is a 2d6 x3 weapon if I cannot use it than I will most likely go with a great sword.

Background: Niug was found as a child by the Tamiir-Quah of Shoanti near the mountains of the Nolands after returning home from a raid. He was surrounded by burnt and half eaten bodies. The elder's decided to allow a woman without any children of her own to take care of Niug. She named the child Niug and raised him as her own son. As a child he was always bullied by the other children because of his difference from them this caused an raging anger to set into Niug. This went on until he finally had enough and fought back. He almost killed three of the boys that bullied him while in a rage. The elder's of the Quah thought it would be best if Niug was taught control of his anger. His teacher was Speaks with the Wind a great warrior.

After many years Niug was able to control his anger and use it for battle instead at others. With his training complete Niug under went his rite of passage to become an adult of the Shoanti. The rite called for him to go hunt a wolf bare handed. Within a week Niug returned with the body of a wolf with it's skull crushed. The rite done he was given his tattoos and full name which was Bone Breaker because of his strength and the way he killed the wolf.

Three years later while on a raid Niug and the rest of the raiders were attacked by a Dragon. Niug was the only survivor of the attack. He received a massive scar to his back from the Dragon's claw. He swore to find a way to kill the dragon. He went back to the tribe to tell them what had happened and what he planned to do. He than traveled to learn all he could of dragons and how to face them in combat. He learned that heavy armor could help turn the teeth or claws of a dragon. Until this point he had used hide for protection while on raids. Niug still travels trying to find the dragon that killed the raiding party.

Sure. Just looked it over. Shouldn't be a problem.

One final question. Will you be allowing the Dervish Dance feat, or a derivation thereof?

Edit: Linkified.

This is Khaladon here with an old favourite I'd like to submit. Bogorin was in a short lived campaign which died when the DM disappeared one day.

His background, stats and such would have to be changed slightly (and can be easily done once we know more about the game details) but it's basically the same. He's an old dwarf whose lost most of his faith and his once significant abilities. Out of favour now with his former god Iomedae, if not for his strong belief in drink and Cayden Cailean's strong stand on freedom and great fondness for drunkards the old dwarf wouldn't have any abilities at all. Now a days he simply spends most of his time in the tavern, trying to regale any who'll listen with tales of his past glory and, if he's deep into his cups, how they should beware Iomedae 'the betrayer'.

Although most now consider him a foolish and useless old drunk, deep down, there still smolders some faint spark of the Dwarf he once was. All it needs is the proper fuel to fan the flames for this once great warrior priest to arise from his drunken ashes once again.

Oh, I'd also like to ad I'm a long time gamer and have been on Paizo here for a few years now. I've never left a game I began in (although many have ended) and am currently involved in a few PbP games which have been going on from several months to over 3 years. And I can easily commit to posting at least once a day. Just. Can't. Get. Enough. D&D. ; )

Thinking Half Orc fighter, should have a back story this afternoon.

Well this will teach me to try to put a character up at 12 am when I have not had much sleep. Here is a changed one and I am still wondering if I can use an Earth Breaker.

Equipment:

Scale Mail: 30 lbs
Backpack: 4 lbs

Beestinger is good to go; everything has been updated except the equipment list. Material from Halflings of Golarion is clearly labeled and explained.

Actually. I can't help but apply. I adore the Darklands!

I'd like to play a Druid Dragon Slayer.

Backstory
Ravik was born in a carvan, and spent most of his young life among his parents, grandparents and the other travellers in their Varisian caravan, he saw much of Varisia as they travelled for his first ten years of life, it was however tragically cut short when a mighty green dragon decided to waylay the caravan as they passed through woodland near Harenshire.

The dragons breath made short work of the poorly armed travellers, melting the boys guardians and friends as he watched horrified from beneath the wagon in a cubby hole he often played hide-and-seek in. He saw his grandmother biten in half and was left alone, and scarred, broken, the boy walked into the forest, hopeless, aimless and sure to be consumed by some predator or wild beast.

Ten years later a wiry, figure left the forest, clad in crude hides and bearing an ill-made staff, he approached villagers and learned how to speak again. Years have passed and the man has relearned the easy charm of his Varisian youth, but he is still touched by strange forces and possesses a tie to nature not understood by the local people. Morever, he has a feverish desire to see the downfall of dragonkind, especially the mighty green wyrm Inzeldren. He knows that he has much to learn before he can get that far however, and is seeking to gain power and adventure to hone his skills.

I'd be interested in taking the Reincarnated Druid archetype, as Ravik plans to hunt Inzeldren across lifetimes if needs be, death will not halt his revenge.

Stat block in the making.

Edgar Lamoureux wrote:

Edit: Linkified.

Dervish Dance should be fine. A player is using it in one of my home games and I haven't found it to be unbalancing.

Mrdarknlight wrote:

The earth breaker is usable. Sorry, I missed the post before I went to sleep last night.

Submitted for your consideration: Seltyn Sevenleaf, elven evoker.

I play in one game and GM another here.

Me thinks you gentlemen need a feather soft touch for this party, to go along with all that bulging muscle and testosterone. You might be wondering why a little slip of a scholar such as myself would want to go traipsing around with a band of brutes like yourselves, and more importantly, what value I have to you lot. In answer to that, I say not all scholars are stuffy ink stained book worms content to hide away in dark libraries reading about the grand events of a history that is ever evolving and constantly being added to, and subsequently leaving them in the dust. Though I must confess I have more than a few ink stains myself, and rather prefer the dark.

I may not be much in a fight beyond not being a liability, but when your staring down the shadowy stone floored halls of a temple to some grotesque deity none of you lot have ever heard of, least of all could pronounce the name of, and you're wonderin’ if that floor stone that's setting just a hair higher than the others is the result of some burrowing vermin, or a pressure plate waiting to send all manner of darts, arrows, spears, and other hellish things into your body...well, you'll be glad to have me round.

Spoiler:
Think Jack Burten meets Laura Croft. Profile needs finishing, but the basic idea is going to be the sill monkey/anti-trap role, with a little bit of buffing from spells.

Ridley Blix wrote:

"Who are you calling a brute?"

Dragonborn3 presenting Naomi. Profile is not done yet, but should be ready by tonight.

Eric Swanson here. Here is Naomi's partner in crime, he he. I will convert him back to Level 1 when I get a chance.

"Naomi, wait for me! You are always in such a hurry!"

Iriesys lowers her glasses.

"Brute? I think you'll find you are quite mistaken, miss. The majority of us here are about as far as anyone can be from brutes, myself included. I would like it if you would not be too hasty when describing those you know little about."

:P

Edgar here with Iriesys Gladomain. Profile's not up yet, but I'm working on it.

"I like her already." Naomis whispers to Izbahn with a wink.

Do you mind if I pick up a Pathfinder Chronicle? It's in the Inner Sea World Guide, and gives +2 to a single type of knowledge check, like KN: History. Not having to buy armor leaves me with a significant amount of money.

Liberty's Edge

"Why do I feel like I am already out of my depth here? I should have never left the Temple..."

Naomi Fairchild wrote:

Izbahn wisely keeps his mouth shut, and only nods in response. He knew sometimes Naomi could be a jealous type.

Converted back to Level 1.

My mouth has been known to run a hair faster than my eyes from time to time. Hope I didn't offend any delicate sensibilities.
Ridley offers a hand to each in turn, gloved in well-worn calf skin.

She looks up (way up) to the scarred knight.
You look plenty deep to me warrior. Keep your eyes and ears open, 'specially when I talk to ya, stay infront of me when the big nasties come out, and behind me when we're on the move...and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Bit more of the mechanics done. I'll be working on her throught the day and checking back here when I have a moment. Super pumped about this, as I've been dying to play Night Below sense I bought it...when it was new. (haven't read through it much in about a decade at least, if you're worried about player/GM info cross contamination)

Liberty's Edge

Grinning down at the Halfling, Aerodus runs a hand through his hair. "Well I suppose I shall have to do as you say Miss. It would be a travesty, should anything happen to one so... eloquent and courageous!"

Bone Breaker is going to stay out of this conversation because he is a big brute.

"Well, you may want to think before you speak, around here. Just keep that in mind, and you shouldn't have any problems."

After resettling her glasses upon her nose, Iriesys extends her hand to complete the gesture of kindness.

Just so you know, you'd be looking way up to Iriesys, as well. She's an elf.

Also, I'll get the stat block up next time I'm on my main computer, and I get my answer regarding the Pathfinder Chronicles. In the mean time, I have some of the basic information up on her profile.

"Brute, you say? Only if your definition of brute is very different from mine. I personally prefer finesse over raw power." The pint sized halfling speaks up from the corner.

"Finess or not," Ridley grins, more to herself than anything. "When your role in life is to fight things, I think of you as a brute. If you use a hammer, a fist, a dagger, or a spell, it's all the same in my book. But that's all beside the point. If you're good at what you do, and what you do helps out our little venture and keeps us all alive, I'll call you a huckleberried fairy princess if that's what tickles your fancy. Good to see someone who isn't going to strain my neck when we talk by the way." She offers the fellow halfling her hand next. "Name's Ridley."

So far we have intrest from (in no particular order):

Niug "Bone Breaker" - Half Elven Armored Hulk Barbarian
Beestinger - Halfling Weapon Adept of the Empty Fist Monk
Ridley Blix - Halfling Archaeologist Bard
Iriesys Gadomain - Elven Bladebound Kensai Magus
Aerodus Aluain - Human Oathbound Paladin Against Undeath
Izbahn Douvurk - Human Universalist
Naomi Fairchild - Human WoP Cleric of Calistra, Erastil, and Desna
Seltyn Sevenleaf - Elven Admixture Evoker Evoker
Borgorin Rockstomper - Dwarven Cleric (perhaps with a level of Fighter)
Dreadan Darlok - Half Orc Figher
And talk of a Human Magus and a Reincarnated Druid

If I missed someone from the list above, please inform me, but I think I mentioned everyone.

Already tons of exciting characters, and a few more days yet for people to throw their hats into the ring. I can see this being difficult to narrow down into a group of 5 to 6.

"Ridley? Bah! What kind o' name be that!" squinting his bleary eyes the old dwarf leans forward, almost tipping out of his chair "F'ah! Halfing! Shoulda known. Ain't met a haf'lin yet as was good fer nothin' but robbin' n' mischif! Hmph!"

Looking around, and realizing that there's enough folk about to make a potential audience, an audience that may be willing to pay for drinks, he leans back, tucks his thumbs into his belt and says even more loudly "'N fact, that reminds me o' tha story o' tha halflin' and tha Hag. Quite a story i'tis a'right, filled wit intrige n' 'orror. But, ah, per'aps one o' you fine folk might be kind enou tae wet a poor ole' dwarf's throat a wee bit 'afore I begins me tale?" as he slyly shifts his eyes from one person to the next, his gaze keen when ale is at stake, despite his obvious intoxication.

Ah yes, am intending for Bogorin to be a cleric, but I may indeed start him of with a level of fighter first, depending on what the final selection is.

And ya, don't begrudge you your job of choosing DM, looks to be a great bunch already and I'd be hard pressed to pick just six myself. Best of luck all!
