Cervin nods grimly.

"I lose focus on our goal and a woman is suffering. This entire situation makes no sense to me. We are near the Qadiran border - I doubt this wood has ever seen snow for more than a day. And what do bandits, cold weather, and these fey have to do with each other? What do they want with Lady Malassene?"

Clambering to his feet, Cervin shoulders his pack and grabs his bow.

"Lead the way."

The party sets out again, and heads along the trail. As they walk, the snow slows and then stop completely, and while the clouds above continue to darken the day and the cold remains, the group's spirits brighten at the even slightly better weather.

The snow has stopped, and there are no longer penalties to perception checks or ranged attacks. The snow on the ground continues to be difficult terrain, though, and slows movement to one half normal speed (except for the wolves, which keep their full speed).

After just under an hour of progress, Yagello spots movement and calls for a halt. A narrow game trail winds its way through the trees and undergrowth here. Hoofprints mark the underlying snow, leading in both directions.

Yagello, following the trail with his eyes, silently spots a large animal carefully picking its way through the forest. It stands about 100 feet away, and appears to be heading away from the group. Looking somewhat like a large deer, the animal's shoulders would easily be taller than even Yagello, and a large set of antlers or immense size crown his head.

The animal's white fur make it obvious that the creature is not from Taldor or anywhere nearby, but from where? Yagello motions towards the beast so that the entire party is aware.

At this point, the creature is proceeding away from the party, and has not noticed anyone. The party can likely allow the creature to leave, whisper any plans, or try and draw the beast's attention in some way.

Do not bother rolling knowledge checks. If the party is going to follow or somehow interact with the beast, I will roll knowledge checks for the whole group at once.

Arkady leans in to whisper to the group, "This beast is clearly not of this region ... perhaps some magic has displaced it from its home. If we follow it, we might learn something of what is going on." Glancing backward, he adds, "Although tracking it back might also be useful, to see how it arrived here."

"My God, it's beautiful."

Cervin fumbles in his pack, and pulls out a small book, he flips it open and reads in a whisper.

"And Erastil did send The Hunter a white stag to lead him..." he snaps the book shut and tucks it away. "This wonderful creature is an omen, we are meant to follow it."

Male Half-Orc Cleric 2

Daegan's eyes widen at the sight of the creature. At Cervin's proclamation, Daegan's gaze breaks from the beast, looking upon his newfound companion with surprise. This turns into a long appraisal, studying the rapt features of the slight man. "A divine portent? You truly believe it to be so?" He looks again towards the animal, though this contemplation seems much less focused on the animal and more towards wherever it might lead them. "It is quite the magnificent sight. Those antlers... a true king of the wild. If you're right, then we must follow it."

Aishe looks less impressed than the others by the sight of the huge deer. "I'm not so sure that we should leave the trail. While it's certainly a magnificent specimen of - whatever it is - so was that Tatzlwyrm that almost ate Arkady yesterday." She turns towards Cervin and tries to phrase her next words so as not to offend him. "When the fey are around I think it would be wise on our part to distrust any 'omens' - they'd think it funny to use our faith against us."

"For my part I'd prefer to stick to the trail, despite the opportunity that may give the bandits or the fey to lay more traps for us." The sorceress gestures towards the snowdrift festooned path the group is trying to follow. "Remember that we're trying to find the lair of these bandits, and that's still our most certain route to get there. Old Deadeye needs to make his omens clearer than that before I can trust them out here." She sounds apologetic about it, but also sincere...

Okay, so maybe Aishe is playing devil's advocate here, but I'm less sure that we should be leaving the trail again.

Cervin looks torn as he stares longingly at the creature.

"Ach. Not what I like to hear, but I am impetuous and have paid the price for it many times. However, I am a servant of Erastil, and can't ignore a white stag such as this in good conscience. I... must follow the decision of the group."

Male Human (Taldan) Ranger 2 (Skirmisher) HP 14/22 AC 20

Yagello also gazes at the beast with some admiration but internally scoffs at the religious undertones he's just heard. He pauses for a moment to collect his thoughts lest he blurt out something rude and insulting.

"I agree with Aishe. Let's focus on one task at a time. Finding the noblewoman and ending the bandit threat are our primary objectives at the moment. We've tried going off trail before with less than desirable results..."

He looks over the faces of his comrades, itching to continue with the mission.

Cervin adjusts his pack, looking resolute.

"Forgive me for my foolishness, father."

"We will not follow it. It could take us hours - days off of our path and mission. But if this is a trap, why does it only appeal to one such as me? It would show something all men desire, or something different for each of us. I will know if this creature is evil. I have to know what it is. Forgive me."

Taking a step out of arm's reach from the rest of the group, he suddenly breaks into a dead run, moving 40' closer to the creature.

"HO THERE!"

The white stag pauses in mid-stride as Cervin calls out, and turns his head to regard Cervin. He cocks his head, as if trying to understand this group's motives, and pauses for a moment. It quickly and swiftly gives a shake of its head, almost like a person would in surprise.

The stag turns towards Cervin and the party, and trots closer, stopping a respectful fifty feet away or so from Cervin, just at the top of the next rise. Sarya, in awe of the beast chases after Cervin and stands by his side. She is about to use her magic to speak with the beast when a booming voice cries out. The animal's mouth does not move, but he appears to speak to the group in Common.

"Who are you, walking through this forest? What purpose do you serve?"

Sarya, catching up to Cervin, whispers excitedly in his ear. "I had come across a boy in the woods just last week. He spoke of a talking white stag as well! At the time, I just thought it was some delusion he had made up while lost in the woods, and I directed him towards Heldren, but he most have seen this as well."

Gritting her teeth to stop herself from growling at the man's foolishness, Aishe whispers quietly to Yagello "Damn that fool..." She also looks at Arkady and Igmar, raises an eyebrow and shrugs in Cervin's direction. To everyone who hasn't already rushed towards the white stag, she says "Fine, so it speaks - with the right spells, even I could make Growler sing and dance a sea shanty. I still don't trust this 'omen'."

In reality Cervin's behaviour is making me laugh a little - it's exactly how I imagine someone with a low Wisdom score would act - despite the fact that I'm willing to bet this is a trap of some sort.

"Ohmygodohmygodohmygod. Focus Cervin, nothing is what it seems. I wonder what this creature's motivations are?"

Detect evil.

Cervin gives Sarya a quick nod before he bows his head to the stag and speaks out in a somewhat quavering voice.

"My name is Cervin, a servant of Erastil. We mean no quarrel. My companions and I come here tracking bandits; murderers who have kidnapped a lady of our people. Have you seen them?"

edit - hah, thanks. Religious types nearly always have high wisdom scores so it's fun to play a foolish one.

Arkady watches the scene, first with concern, then curiousity. I did not foresee this today. Fascinating ...

As Cervin converses with the stag, Arkady turns to watch behind them, ready to react if "the feeling" comes on.

Cast Detect Magic, but looking behind the party. I don't want to be blinded by an overwhelming aura coming off of the stag... :). Arkady will be listening to the conversation, but watching for a trap to be sprung.

Male Half-Orc Cleric 2

Daegan watches the scene, a slight smile on his face, hands clasped in front of his waist. "One may plan for every eventuality and every possible risk, but the world yet breeds surprises. I should and do concede the practicality of your plan, Aishe, but what great wonders might one miss if one does not seek them out?"

What you have to understand about Daegan is that despite everything, he's a huge romantic. An omen in the woods would completely capture his imagination. Of course, when it inevitably turns out that the stag wants to kill and eat us, he'll be a little less smug.

Male Human (Taldan) Ranger 2 (Skirmisher) HP 14/22 AC 20

Yagello stands a bit dumbfounded by Cervin's mad dash towards the white stag. He initially grows angry but then cools off after thinking things over for a moment.

Who I am to tell this man what to do? We're not part of a regiment in the Taldan army; there are no generals here. We're all just unbearded commoners trying to make our own ways in a crazy world.

Nevertheless, he nods gravely to Aishe whispering, "My thoughts exactly..." Still keeping his sword hidden, he leaves his frontline position and moves behind his half-elven friend, hoping to protect their flank in the event of an attack.

"I have been in this forest many days, and I see much," the stag replies vaguely. "Who are your companions, Cervin? And who sends you into the forest to rescue this lady?" The stag remains motionless as the voice booms to reach Cervin's companions still a good thirty feet behind.

Cervin does not detect any evil in the stag, and Arkady does not immediately detect any magical auras sneaking behind the group.

Cervin, I am assuming you are using the fast targeted version of detect evil, but if you want to use the slower cone version, just say so in your next post.

Knowledge(nature) checks:

Igmar: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Yagello: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

Sarya recalls reading about the majestic elk in her book, a large herd animal from the far North. Yagello also recalls hearing a Ulfen man speak of these elk once in a tavern. However both Sarya and Yagello cannot recall any stories of a talking elk, other than the boy Sarya saw only a few days ago.

"Forgive me," Sarya says, "But I have never seen or even imagined a talking elk before. My name is Sarya, and I am an apprentice Druid, learning from those who have come before me. My companions and I are from the nearby town of Heldren. In addition to rescuing this lady, we are also seeking to find the source of the unseasonal cold." Sarya motions to the rest of the group to come closer and introduce themselves.

"Oh, I agree Igmar. In fact..." Aishe deliberately hangs back when Sarya motions everyone to move closer, and uses the cover of her comrades to cast detect magic and search the area around the stag, the trees on either side, and the creature itself.

Perception, using detect magic: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

However when she senses nothing, the other eyebrow rises to join it's counterpart, and she mutters in surprise. "Nothing? No strong auras... so maybe it's not a fey trick. But then, what is it?" She looks at her wolf companion. "I was sure this was a trap."

With a total Perception check of 5, I'm guessing that even if there are any auras, Aishe has failed to sense them.

Detect magic does not require a perception check to detect the aura, only to notice the potential source of the aura.

After not finding anything initially, Aishe detects a single faint aura on the stag as she gets closer.

I'm treating this as the first and second rounds of the detect magic spell. I'll reveal the third round information (if Aishe can determine the school of magic) as the conversation progresses.

Cone version, Cervin won't check behind himself, but he'll look side to side at least.

"I trust my companions can introduce themselves. We have been sent by the elders of Heldren, and we are here to save her because it is the right thing to d-- wait, many days? I suppose it is obvious you are not from here. Um, we have so many questions. How can we entice you to answer?"

"I am here to protect the forest, and so I must know about all who enter here. If I decide your companions have honorable intentions, I will help you as I deem necessary." The stag briefly bends its neck down to sniff at the snow as it speaks.

Cervin broadens his focus while the stag speaks, but can find no evil auras about the creature.

A map of the starting positions, based on my interpretation of where everyone was, is available. As part of your first turn, you can "place" your character as a slightly different position if it makes more sense. Remember, the entire map is covered in snow, which should be treated as difficult terrain. There are no other major obstacles of note.

Arkady, Growler and Aishe are up first.

Male Human (Varisian) Rogue 1/Wizard 1 Status: AC 11, 7/13 hit points

Reacting with the startling speed his companions have come to expect, even as the voice changes Arkady steps back and reaches out to Yagello and touches his shoulder. "Desna guide you."

Arkady is somewhat saddened that this is not a divine omen, but feels a little vindicated at not having seen such an occurrence in the cards this morning. It was a little too good to be true.

Move to J6, standard action to use Diviner's Fortune on Yagello. (+1 to attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws until the beginning of my next round).

Male Human (Taldan) Ranger 2 (Skirmisher) HP 14/22 AC 20

"Damned magic again!" Yagello bellows to no one in particular. Completely confused as to what's going on, the party's only noncaster looks wildly from side to side. He quickly checks behind himself to safeguard against any threats from the east but otherwise stands motionless.

Leaning towards his half-elven friend, he calls out, "Aishe, do you have any idea what we're facing?"

If possible, I just wanted to get some roleplaying in rather than actually take my turn in the initiative order. If I'm a little confused as to the nature of out predicament, Yagello is probably doubly lost!

Recognizing that a fight is about to take place, and seeing the large white stag as nothing more than prey at the moment, Growler leaps into a loping run and moves around to the side, seeking to attack the beast from it's side or rear and avoid it's dangerous antlers.

Double move to E1. Not so much trying to flank as just avoiding attacking head on and getting torn up by the stag's antlers - I assume it has antlers? No deer, elk or anything like that here so I've no idea on that point.

Aishe follows Growler's path through the snow, wading to the side from where she can bring up her crossbow and shoot at the stag without risking hitting one of her companions.

Ranged attack, light crossbow, poor visibility (snow): 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 2 - 4 = -1

Move to I2, fire her crossbow and miss so badly I need to know if you're using any sort of fumble rule... :p

Aishe: Yes, the elk has antlers. Here's a picture of an elk being chased by wolves, for reference. And I don't enjoy critical fumble rules, so you're fine. Also, the snow is not falling, so you don't have to apply the -4 penalty (although it would not have mattered in this case anyways).

The beast lowers its horns and charges towards the front of the group, heading straight towards Sarya.

Elk charges to G6 and attempts to gore Sarya (Getting a +2 to attack rolls, but suffering a -2 penalty to AC until next round). Sarya has not acted yet and is flat-footed.

Attack roll (gore, charge): 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 2 = 16
Damage roll (if applicable): 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Sarya takes the full force of the antlers to her mid-section. She stumbles badly, but remains upright.

Sarya takes 7 points of damage, and is now at 5 HP.

Suddenly, a tiny humanoid, less than a foot tall, appears immediately next to Yagello. Blue skinned and flying with transparent wings, he reaches out to touch Yagello's blade, his finger glowing with blue energy.

"We can't have any of this now, can we?" The voice betrays the fact that this tiny creature was the one talking all along.

Creature breaks invisibility at K6 to make a touch attack against Yagello. Will save (DC 17) to resist the effect.

Touch attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Yagello's Will Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Yagello's longsword, given to him by the Ulfen man, suddenly shrinks down to be about half a foot long, much less useful in combat.

Yagello's longsword is now sized for a "fine" creature (4 sizes smaller).

The map has been updated. Cervin, Sarya, Yagello, Igmar, Daegan, Caelia and Zev can now take their round 1 actions, and Arkady, Growler and Aishe can take their round 2 actions.

Round one

Cervin stares at the fey, the surprise and humiliation on his face quickly turning to fury.

"There's EIGHT of us you fool! You want to die for the sake of... of a -joke-? So be it!"

Biting back a curse, Cervin takes a step back from the stag and takes a bead before he lets fly with two normal arrows at the stag in rapid succession.

Hehe... thanks GM. What I meant was that I have no idea whether or not elk shed their antlers in winter. There are few deer here, none native, most kept on farms for venison, although there is a small species of Japanese deer that are feral in the Cascades here in Tasmania and in the Brindabellas near Canberra. I personally have never seen one IRL. Sorry for confusion. :)

Cervin looks over Sarya, wincing as he sees the wound from the elk's antlers. He nocks another arrow, and then glances over to see Yagello's weapon shrink.

"Oh come -on-. Hey Yagello! Need an axe?"

Elk are plentiful where I live and keep antlers in the winter. They shed them for spring. I half think this AP will be like walking in the woods near my house.

Daegan's eyes widen and he looks slightly aghast as the trick registers. Seeing the beast charging into Sarya, he almost moves into motion towards the druid, but then he hears the voice of the small blue creature and turns towards it instead, drawing his dagger as he does so. In a few short steps he is at the side of the creature and Yagello, and slashes at the creature.

Crap you're right. Easiest way to fix this will be for Cervin to stay put, fire both arrows, and eat an AoO.

Arkday... good point!

I'm going to take Cervin's 5-foot step away, which gives the elk an attack of opportunity. I'll also modify Daegan's actions to draw his dagger and move to J5, unfortunately negating Daegan's attack.

AoO Attack roll against Cervin (gore): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Damage roll (if applicable): 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

So no big loss. Map has been updated. According to my last check, Sarya, Yagello, Igmar, Caelia and Zev can still take their round 1 actions, and Arkady, Growler and Aishe can still take their round 2 actions. I'll delay Sarya and Caelia until most players have posted, to give the player characters chances to act first.

Quick Stats:

Status:

Igmar's hum gains volume, and soon his thunderous voice can be heard all around the battlefield singing battle hymn. He reaches over his shoulder and grabs his shield, protecting himself from anything that might come his way.

Standard Action: Start Bardic Performance, Inspire Courage.
Move Action: Draw shield.

Yagello stares in disbelief for a moment at his diminutive sword but then shakes himself out of his trance. "Nice move foe, but I am more resourceful than you think!"

He draws his elven curve blade and attacks with all of his strength, feeling the magical energies unleashed by Arkady and Igmar surging through his veins.

Attack (Elven Curve Blade): 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 1 + 1 = 11 If successful, Damage: 1d10 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 1 = 13

Guess the magical energies weren't as potent as I thought! No wonder Yagello hates magic! :P

To continue with the elk/deer discussion, there aren't any elk in my neck of the woods, but there is a small herd of deer that periodically pops in to the grounds of my housing development! Magnificent animals!

Round 2 actions

As the elk charges at and gores Sarya, Growler dashes in to tear at it's haunches from the side...

Move action - move to G5
Standard action - attack the elk

Bite attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Bite damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Well, no deer, elk, moose, bears or anything like that here. Wallabies, pademelons, possums, the occasional wombat or echidna, and very rarely a quoll - no devils left near Hobart now thanks to the Facial Tumour Disease - all those I see in the scrub behind my house, along with a bewildering array of birds. There are no native land vertebrates larger than a kangaroo in Tasmania these days.

Arkady watches as the fey appears and shrinks Yagello's weapon. Not wanting to be so close, he backs away. Moving around behind Daegan, he touches the half-orc on the shoulder. "We could really stand to have fortune go our way for a change!"

Move to I4 (no AoO as the creature is Tiny), standard action to use Diviner's Fortune on Daegan. (+1 insight bonus to attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws until the beginning of my next round).

Round 2 actions

Hearing Yagello's exclamation, and seeing the fey manifest besides the ranger, Aishe loads a cold-iron tipped quarrel into her crossbow and lets loose...

Move action - load crossbow
Standard action - ranged attack vs. the fey

Ranged attack, light crossbow, into melee: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 2 - 4 = 18
Damage, cold-iron crossbow bolt: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Confirm possible critical: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 2 - 4 = 4

While the creature easily dodges Yagello's slice, Aishe's bolt catches the fey off-guard. The bolt, which is about the same height as the creature itself, appears to be firmly lodges into his arm, and he cries out in pain.

"Sarya!" Caelia runs up to Sarya's side, and touches her with her glowing hand.

Caelia moves to G5, casts cure light wounds

Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Sarya is now at 9 HP

Sarya, weary of being knocked out again, draws her scimitar and tries to push the elk away.

Move action to draw weapon, attack the elk defensively

Scimitar (attack,defensively): 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 1 - 4 = 15
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Sarya's blade cuts into the elk's flank, and the creature appears visibly weakened.

"I don't need to prove myself to you giants! We'll see what Izoze does with you! See you soon!" The fey makes a clucking noise, and starts to fade away.

Fey casts invisibility as a spell-like ability, defensively.

Concentration check (DC 19): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24

The creature disappears completely, and a high-pitched cackling can be heard receding away from the party, to the east.

The elk backs up slowly and starts advancing away from the group.

Elk withdraws as a full-round action, moving 100 feet to the southwest. The various branches and tree trunks along the way grant the elk partial cover, as a +2 bonus to AC.

Map has been updated, although the enemy is all off-grid right now. At this point, the wolves could still catch up with the elk, and ranged attacks are still a possibility.

Cervin, Sarya, Yagello, Igmar, Daegan, Caelia and Zev can now take their round 2 actions. Additionally, Arkady, Growler and Aishe can take their round 3 actions.

Cervin stares at the elk with an arrow nocked before he shakes his head.

"Bah! We don't need the meat."

He looks over to the party.

"My foolishness has delayed us and accomplished nothing. I will take that stag as a message of caution and humility. My deepest apologies." Cervin glance over to the retreating stag. "What a strange creature. It is like a deer but not. The antlers are different."

Sarya indicates to Zev to return, and slumps down, tired.

"I don't know if this is the right path for me," she says, upset despite Caelia's healing magic having reduced her injuries to minor scrapes and bruises.

"I've been having doubts since yesterday," Caelia says, trying to comfort Sarya, but holding back tears. "Perhaps this is not our adventure. If this is what we've seen in just two days, I can only imagine the injured farmers and hunters that must be streaming into Heldren after running into these awful fey." She looks hesitantly towards the group, ashamed to admit her doubts aloud to the entire group.

Arkady steps up to the two women. "Do not feel ashamed to speak your mind. I have my doubts as well - I was very nearly eaten, and that shakes me deeply. There is an ancient saying among my people, one that may even have its roots in Azlanti wisdom. It is know thyself. You have both devoted much of your lives to protecting this town or the world around it. Perhaps your role in this is to continue doing just that, while others seek out the source."

Cervin watches the stag run off into the distance.

"Bad luck to let a wounded animal go, but I am reading the parables too literally. I look at the words, not the meaning. Also to be honest they say that the Grim White Stag was 30 feet tall and had branches for antlers, but maybe I don't need to tell the others that.."

His reverie is interrupted by the conversation. He looks over sadly.

"They do not have the spirit for this task, but few would. This is hard."

Cervin speaks slowly, choosing his words with care.

"You want to return to Heldren and are ashamed. Arkady is right - do not be. You are worthy of this task, but perhaps more worthy of another. I know you worship your own Gods, but there is no higher calling then to aid townsfolk in need. If you must go, go with my blessing."
