Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A ranger is proficient with all simple and martial weapons and with light armor, medium armor, and shields (except tower shields). Favored Enemy (Ex): Human A ranger gains a +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks against creatures of his selected type. Likewise, he gets a +2 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against them. A ranger may make Knowledge skill checks untrained when attempting to identify these creatures. Track (Ex): A ranger adds half his level (minimum 1) to Survival skill checks made to follow or identify tracks. Wild Empathy (Ex): A ranger can improve the initial attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like a Diplomacy check to improve the attitude of a person. The ranger rolls 1d20 and adds his ranger level and his Charisma bonus to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly. To use wild empathy, the ranger and the animal must be within 30 feet of one another under normal visibility conditions. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute, but, as with influencing people, it might take more or less time. The ranger can also use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but he takes a –4 penalty on the check. Combat Style Feat (Ex): Two-Handed Weapon

Tall and moderately handsome, Yagello’s most distinguishing trait is his eyes. Perhaps hinting at a celestial bloodline, his eyes are silvery blue in color, not unlike the hue the sun would make shining through thick ice. His head and face are clean-shaven, and he wears practical clothing, usually of buckskin and loaded with pockets. A set of manacles always hangs from his belt, and he is never far from his favorite weapon, the elven curve blade. History:
Yagello looked over at the squirmy man across the desk with a measure of contempt and exhaled deeply. The man, perhaps his name was Janson, was sweating profusely, and his tone was getting loud and aggressive. “You idiot! What were you thinking throwing him off that rooftop? Can’t you read? Your orders clearly said we wanted him alive.” Yagello licked his lips and took the barrage calmly. “He was about to unleash a fireball in the middle of that ceremony. Countless innocents would have bee-“Janson loudly smashed a tankard on the desk interrupting him in midsentence. “What do I care about those unbearded? You had a job to do, and now I’ll have to answer to the magister for your incompetence! Look at yourself! You’re a mess. I should have you flogged and thrown in jail for your unlawful appearance!” Yagello stroked the hair on his face which had grown in over the last week, and his gaze began to steel. Janson continued, “Your mother would be embarrassed with the weak man you’ve become. You’re a complete disgrace to her legacy. You…” “THAT’S ENOUGH!!!” Yagello shouted, and he saw fear for the first time in Janson’s beady little eyes. He tore the sash of office off his armor and stuffed in the little man’s face. He also loosened his belt pouch and flung the gold across the room. “There, consider our contract voided, you bastard! I’m done with House Hostilia. If you ever even think of coming after me, YOU’LL be the next job I do.” His anger vented, Yagello lowered his guard and turned around. In his line of work, knowing the insides of people’s hearts was a necessity, and this instance was no different than any other. For a coward like Janson, even the hint of a threat would paralyze him into complete inaction, and Yagello would be able to walk out unmolested. Yagello’s birth was the accidental byproduct of a short-lived tryst between his mother and an unknown suitor. Though her pregnancy was unplanned, his mother loved him deeply and provided him with the best guardians and care money could buy. A ranger of some acclaim, she worked as a bounty hunter for the various Taldan noble houses and was out of the home frequently. Raised on the outskirts of Oppara, Yagello adored his mother and eagerly awaited each of her return visits. His idyllic lifestyle came crashing down around the age of 10 when one of his mother’s targets turned the tables on her and tracked her down to her home. As her little boy watched in fear, these villains tortured and ravaged his mother before killing her execution style. A cherished servant was killed as well but Yagello was spared. His mother had sensed the intrusion at the last possible moment and locked her son behind a secret door rather than gather her weapons, armor, and magic items. She had provided for his care in the event of her death and wanted a vastly different life for him than the one she led. Yagello was sent to a succession of boarding schools where he was first instructed in the arcane arts and failing that, divine magic. He showed no aptitude for either field and developed a deep-seeded distrust and distaste for both magic and religion. Now in his twenties and bounced out of several institutions, he discovered an old chest once belonging to his mother. There he found her original set of weapons and armor as well as journals she had written as a teenager. Though against her wishes, he would follow her as a ranger and also become a bounty hunter for the Taldan nobility, specifically House Hostilia. Yagello is an extremely focused man, almost to the point of excess. Normally, he keeps his head and face completely clean-shaven and wears practical, neat clothes. When out on assignment, the mission at hand becomes the nucleus of his entire being. He methodically studies his opponent and devises different tactics: some to kill, some to incapacitate. He doesn't want to be unprepared and tries to visualize every possible contingency he’ll face. He forgoes food, sleep, even activities of daily hygiene. On long missions, the hair on his head and face grows unruly, often incurring the wrath of Taldor’s ruling elite. Yagello distrusts mages and clerics, believing true solutions come from relentless planning and the steel of one’s weapon if necessary. He knows Golarion’s gods are ever present but prefers to rely on himself rather than some nebulous deity. He carries guilt from the way his mother died and vows to never become a burden on someone else. A small poisoned pin hangs from a chain around his neck, always ready to impale his jugular if he proves a danger to others around him. His mother’s influence remains deeply intertwined into his being, and his memory of her becomes more glossy and golden with each passing year. He has almost a courtly view of women, seeing them as beings to honor and cherish but from afar. He abhors violence against them with such acts incurring so much rage in him that he forgoes his usually disciplined planning. He tries to protect his female associates and would willingly take a blade destined for them. Conversely, he has a hard time attacking female opponents and prefers using nonlethal tactics against them. The exception to this rule would be the winter witches of Irrisen. He doesn't have exact proof but believes the men who attacked his mother were working for a winter witch and now holds the whole lot of them as undeserving of womanhood. Though a citizen of Taldor, he holds no loyalty to his mother country and operates from an internal code, grounded on protecting the innocent and punishing the wicked. His tactics can be seen as merciless at times, coming from years spent in the muck of society. Yagello prefers solitude to the din of crowded places and often sleeps under the boughs of trees. Being out in nature refreshes him, though he remains a troubled man. As his eyes close, painful memories rush at him in rapid succession, first his mother’s death, then the taunts over not having a last name or father, and lastly, lingering doubts over some of the missions he undertook for the Taldans. Ironically, he truly enjoys human performance art, finding comfort in these diversions. Plays, recitals, and concerts are all activities favored by Yagello and one of the few things Oppara was good for in his opinion. With his sleep normally disjointed and sporadic, hearing the sweet sound of a woman singing is the only way he can sleep the entire night. Any woman bard in his company instantly becomes his favorite comrade. Otherwise, Yagello spends his nights reading the weathered pages of his mother’s old journals or rigorously training his body. Per his world view, physical fitness is but another form of preparedness, and in the same vein, he practices with all weapon types. Anyone holding exotic or unusual arms can expect a request from Yagello to see and handle these weapons… |
