The normal price is 1sp/mile which works out to 4 GP, but you are going into a dangerous area which is why he is asking for the double rate. In that sense, it is a fair rate. That and he does have to return the same distance.

"Bandits, trolls, ogres, worgs, and worse.
Leave in da mornin'. Iffn ja wants ride, ja know price."
He takes out a red dragon scale and drops it on the deck. "Dangerous enuf fer ya?"
Elathras Narcinal
Elathras nods his head, and begins to put his boots back on, turning and asking Gruk and Beltin, "well not that is settled can we go to the Bristleback Inn? they have numby food! Elathras turns and heads to the inn, as he steps through the doorway he yells "Hey Amelia were back and no one died this time!" finding a seat at a table he orders a pint of ale and asks what the stew of the day is.
Kaztor Strongforge
"That's an impressive trophy right there," Kaztor whistles in appreciation. "For a dragon slayer's boat, 8 gold sounds fair."
brvheart
"Slay it? Har, damn thing stole a cow right off me deck! We barely managed to knock that scale off.
Stones and fire won't pay me bills lad. I need gold or silver."

If no one is going to buy any supplies, etc we can move this forward to morning.

what a wise and powerful wizard you... oops wrong genre, anyway, good idea.
Elathras, after ordering the evening stew and pulling out his bag of shiny coppers to pay for it, settles down on a provided pallet by the fireplace and goes to sleep, dreaming of the upcoming morning boat ride; and puppies, he always dreams of puppies.
Kaztor Strongforge
Kaz was out almost before he finished his last cup of grog. He liked next to the others, still having to count his gold. The expedition hadnt been quite as lucrative as he had hoped so far.

After collecting the fares the captain begins the journey east. It will take two days and nights so subtract two days rations also. You arrive just above the rapids on the south bank of the river. He tells you the coast road is about 8 miles to the east.
Beltin Benedict
Beltin suggests buying rations. If they were going to get rich, they could afford to eat some iron rations a while. He puts the rations in the barbarian's pack.
I say we pay for 1 week dried rations per person. Cost = 8gp+wk rations per person

good idea, I will add those to Elathras' gear
Elathras gathers his gear from the bottom of the boat, rewrapping his scarf to cover his ugly nose, nodding to the boatman as he steps into the shallows and toward the bank. Turning he asks the ferryman "We follow the river," pointing east, then scratching his head, "for a while, once we get to the road do we turn left or right?"
brvheart
Considering you are 3 days out by boat and 6 days back on foot, you might want more than a week's rations!
brvheart
"The river goes north, then east. Head due east to the road and then turn south."
Kaztor Strongforge
So would two weeks of rations be sufficient for a legit exploration? I need to know how much gold to deduct.
Elathras Narcinal
I'm afraid to try and calculate what we all are carrying right now, Elathras will purchase at least a couple of weeks of food,
Elathras continues looking at the river, then the sun then to his left and right hand, finally shrugging his shoulders he calls out to the boat man "Thanks" then turning to the team he asks "Shall we leave? When we get to the road we will figure out which direction to go." using his hammer as a staff Elathras heads out the direction he believes to be east.
Elathras Narcinal
upon arriving at Rappan Athuk, Elathras carefully walks around the large area clockwise, stopping at the western side of the location he shrugs his shoulders. "Its a big cemetery Gruk, a bunch of headstones a few mausoleums a statue and a well, I thought this was a battle field!" Slightly disappointed that there wasn't more to see Elathras, at the most westerly portion of the graveyard, drops to the level 5 ft down, asking the team, "Should we set stakes with rope incase we need to exit quickly?"
perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32 walking around the perimeter
perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (18) + 13 = 31 at the western edge of the next level down

You notice some freshly dug graves with your names on the head stones.
Elathras Narcinal
'Gruk is smart, he will know why' Not being able to read himself, Elathras perks up when Gruk explains, smiling he asks "Gruk, do you think they heard about us from the monsters over at the "mouth"?
While he listens to Gruk's expelation, Elathras drives a stake into the ground and begins tying knots in a 50 ft length of rope to tie to the stake and throw down into the pit.
Elathras Narcinal
After securing the rope to the stake Elathras smiles "Look Gruk, I think it is ready, Who wants to go first." offering the rope to the team, then smiling and pulling it away he says, "I was just kidding, I want to go first, that's why I got out my rope!" Tossing the coiled rope as far as he can he then begins to descend the rope to the-30 ft. level area with the steps to he nearest mausoleum.
assuming he descends unimpeded he walks around the Mausoleum on the level above it looking carefully around and ask the team, "Shall we go in? Or do you want to look around more?"
perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
Kaztor Strongforge
Kaz laughs, "That's merely a parlor trick! I wouldn't be worried by that at all. If Dwerfater calls me home, I won't care that some tricky mage had my naem on a tombstone. Might save my clan money for a burial stone," he laughs again.

Where did you wish to explore Mitleid? And there are three Mausoleums.

Elathras shrugs his shoulders, "This way we can chase them!" Elathras moves quickly to his left, swinging his Lucerne hammer over his head, he brings it crashing down at the nearest rat.
