Unique Weapons / new type

Couldn't find this one anywhere.....
If I get a unique weapon on a chronicle sheet (or just go to buy one normally), does it have to be the same weapon type, assuming it makes sense?

For instance, can I get a Flame Tongue as a kukri or warhammer instead of a longsword?

Unique weapons are always exactly the type of weapon mentioned in their entry. Same for armor. Some chronicles make specific exceptions, though.

If you have questions about a particular item on a Chronicle Sheet, just visit the corresponding GM thread and it's likely already been asked there (or you could be the first!).

Actually, there is one exception of note: ammunition found on chronicle sheets can be purchased for any weapon. So +1 flaming shuriken could be bullets, bolts, or arrows.

Bullets could refer to sling bullets or firearm bullets, so IMO it is best to specify which you mean.

In this case both are applicable.

I've never seen a Paizo product describe firearm bullets as anything but "bullets." It would be nice if there were a further distinction, but it's probably best to couch things in the terms the system uses.

Please see Ultimate Combat or Ultimate Equipment.

They are explicitly called out as firearm bullets.

And yet, on a certain Chronicle where you face off against a gunslinger, they're listed as just "bullets".

"Bullets" are in the CRB, and is used as ammunition for slings, and aren't usable with firearms, which is why firearm bullets are referred to as "firearm bullets".

As to a certain Chronicle that has ammo from a gunslinger listed as simply "bullets", that's just sloppy editing; due to the ruling Illeist pointed out (which is actually a FAQ answer), it doesn't actually matter, since you can buy it as any ammo type.

Nope. Sorry. They're stuck.

It's not sloppy editing, it's a change in policy. It used to be that specific ammo was specific ammo, but this has been changed with that FAQ. Now you don't have to have the exact same type of ranged weapon to get some fun out of custom ammo on any chronicle.

Newer chronicle sheets also list it as "ammunition", not as specifically bolts or arrows or bullets.

It actually is sloppy editing. Because if its going to refer to a specific type of ammo, then it needs to refer to the actual specific type of ammo. Just because ammo is comprehensive now, doesn't mean that a chronicle sheet created before that (or that used a specific term) shouldn't use the correct term.

Yeah, okay. That was sloppy back then but doesn't matter anymore now.

Literally exactly what I was saying. :P

1 person marked this as a favorite.

We agree on main points and fight to the death about who's most right about the details :P

That said, there are more and more Scenario Chronicles coming out with "non standard" versions of unique and named weapons. Keep an eye out, I've seen some REALLY neat ones.

Ok, so I'm necro-ing my own thread...but I have a followup question :)

If I bought a unique weapon (such as Flame Tongue), could I enhance it further? It's currently a +1 weapon (with other stuff), could I enhance it to +2?

Liberty's Edge 4/5 5/55/55/5 ****

No. Once it has become a named unique item, you can't change it anymore.
