Hey DM Stylz. We ran into an issue needing arbitration at the end of our encounter Land Ho!.
Myself and another member of the group have ended up with a Wayfinder.
We're just wondering what method you want to use for determining resonance powers? The static method for simplicity or do we want to go random?

Will look into it and get back to ya guys.

I still want to run something at some point but I just don't have the time right now. Kale will be level 7 and back on the list at some point.

Found this one looking through the recruitment and like the setup you have; thinking about maybe dm'ing, or maybe just joining to play.
How tough do you guys aim for the encounters to be?
What level of build optimization and tactics/strategy do you aim for?
do you have a glut/shortage of dms or players?
how do you handle player death?

First off, WELCOME :)
Feel free to PC or GM or both :)
So, encounter difficulty can usually be a little on the harder side. Since the encounter is typically only the "climax" or bbeg, PC's can go nova which means a normal challenge will usually get mowed through.
Optimizing is PC by PC basis. Some do some don't. We all want to be good at what we do. My PC for example is a better armor smith / blacksmith / enchanter as compared to an overpowered cleric.
I have a list in the campaign tab, with a list of ready PCs who are available for games with an up to date (as best I can) of level. GM rotate, as do PC. Generally PC will be different since there is now, in my view, a good mix of levels available to create encounters.
PC death has yet to happen, so have yet to go there. I would presume that the player could create a new PC, possibly 1/2 of what their dead PC was. Not sure how that is going to be arbitrated to be honest.
There are also a couple links in the campaign tab to help with XP and loot when making an encounter.

Aim for Epic encounters. I don't think encounters are typically optimized though

Hmmm, so, if I aimed an encounter for 5 lvl 2, the xp budget would be 2000 for the encounter?
I remain surprised that no one has died yet facing such encounters on a regular basis. If I make one, I'll have to be careful to either not optimize it, or to adjust for optimization by lowering the xp budget.

The encounters tend to be a mob (like a whole mess of zombies) or a single creature (like a giant magic centipede). My first encounter was a wererat and a handful of dire rats. When the party can burn an entire day of spells and powers, and an entire level's worth of consumables, on a single encounter they prove more powerful than your average party taking on one of many encounters they'll face in a day and/or before their next level.

My first gm game: a wererat, a handful of dire rats and a handful of regular rats.
My second game: a variety of zombies/skeletons
My third game: dust digger(s), cannot remember
My fourth game: giant centipede varient
My fifth game: I tried to do a chase, but I didn't run it correctly so I canceled it and called the game.
I personally have yet to run "leveled" (n)pc enemies. I would hate to overdo it and TPK. I wouldn't mind if 1 or 2 PC died but just not the whole group kinda thing. I would keep an eye on how leveled games went to better prepare one of my own.

I ran a mission with leveled NPCs, granted they were like 2nd or 3rd level tops. It went fine, no one died. The NPCs were not super optimized, although they were balanced. The players had the jump on them and used some good tactics. The idea is to be challenging and have fun, not to smoke a party of players by showing off some crazy class builds. As the GM is easy to set the level of the challenge at whatever you need so killing off a group should only really result from bad decision making or poor preparation on the group, or just terribly unlucky rolls. Killing off a whole party means someone did not do their job well, and as DM, hopefully it wasn't you that failed to deliver a proper challenge.
I have been in quite a few encounters, some were experimental and didn't go as well as could have, others were short quick and fun. I would focus on a decent story leading up to the encounter and then do a boss with some minions mixed in, maybe some hazards/environment/odd location for a twist. While there is no overarching storyline or even consistent concept of where this is all taking place, some of the missions are fun if they have something your character can take away style wise.

Part of the issue is that different communities and people have different ideas on what "average" optimization is, and I really don't have a sense of where this community's is.
I think I'll start somewhat low and adjust from there, though it looks like there's a lot of people trying to GM at the moment.

Kale here is probably the most optimized character I've seen. Maybe the Halfling Cleric with 3+ minions.

I think our campaign may be in the same boat. Haven't heard from our DM since the 30th...
We've yet to get into combat, think we're about to though.
Well if you don't hear from the GM by the 15th, I will call the game dead as well. Since it seems like you are just in the beginning I will say the game isn't complete. No level up/gold will be awarded. Let me know which GM it is, I will keep an eye on it.

Withal is talking about Contentious GM. It's happening over in Going Out of Business
We're getting worried.
