"Bomande... help me! I'm hurt... " the count's voice calls from the dark of the jungle. "The tiger... oh, gods, it hurts! Help... me..."

The Baron's head whips around at the sound of the Count's voice.

Falroun? Falroun! Don't worry, I'm coming!" The Baron shoulders his musket and starts climbing down the ladder, trying to peer into the darkness.

Edited accordingly.

That's odd. The Count left us ages ago. Why's he just now calling for help? Adeah squints into the darkness, training her musket in the direction of the Count's voice but saying nothing. Though she can see perfectly in the jungle behind her, the starlight keeps her angel eyes from functioning properly in the clearing. She can't yet see the source of the voice-- but isn't at all sure she trusts it.

Fr. Yefimovich looks at Rapunzel with admiration. "Smart... and beautiful." To the baron, "She is right, baron. I hear no tiger... Something is amiss about this... vwe must be cautious."

The priest follows after Rapunzel and the baron for protection. He hooks his crossbow back and draws his scimitar as he moves, remaining near the baron and trying to remain alert to threats all around them. Should they indeed find and speak with the count, Grigori tries to surmise if he's hiding something.

Round 1

Adeah, Rapunzel, Roland, Grigori, Lymwin, the Baron, the Count.

NOTE: I have put the Count on the map, but due to the total concealment from the jungle, no one yet has line of sight to him. As such, he may be in a slightly different square than I've portrayed him.

Adeahsquints into the darkness, training her musket in the direction of the Count's voice but saying nothing.

Rapunzel slides down the rope, landing on the ground with a thud. Heading towards the sound of the Count's voice, the half-elf nocks an arrow as she moves. "Beware of treachery my lord!" she cautions.

Roland leaps down to the ground. non-lethal damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 He then moves towards the sound of the Count's voice, while brandishing his rapier.

Grigori moves to the rope and slides down, following Rapunzel. (You have to move to the rope, and so if you draw your weapon during that move, you will not have free hands to easily slide down the rope. So, I am assuming you get down to the ground empty-handed. If you'd rather try the climb-with-full hands check, let me know.

Lymwin delays.

The Baron finishes climbing down and moves towards the Count, readying his musket. "Dammit, Falroun, where are you?"

The Count answers weakly,"Over here... help..."

Suddenly there is a flurry of activity from the jungle, and a large quadruped creature bursts out of the jungle. Its rear half resembles a tiger, but its feet are hoofed and the creature's head looks more like a weasel, with a mouthful of razor-sharp teeth. It charges towards the Baron, crying out in the Count's voice! "Bomande, Bomande! I'm so hurt, help me!" Its voice turns to a shrieking laugh at it closes on the Baron and bites him in the shoulder!

End of Round 1 - everyone is up! remember, the dim light of the clearing imposes a 20% miss chance; the jungle is dark and also provides total concealment beyond 5 feet.

Also note: the trees provide cover only in the center 10' area - the rest of the branches don't start until 20' above the ground. Thus Lymwin and Adeah can both see the beast on the ground without cover from the tree (although the Baron is in the way.)

The motions of its weasel-shaped snout don't seem to match the sounds of its words as it speaks, first in the Count's voice, and then in Roland's voice. "It's good to see you again, Bomande... I had hoped the misplaced sense of vengeance you hairless apes have would bring you back to me one day!" Turning to Roland, it snarls in his voice: "But first..." With that, the beast rears up and attacks Roland with its hooves! Then it bites the Baron again.

Rapunzel lines up a massive overhand swing of the curved blade at the beast, slashing it deeply. "Grigori, the Baron!" she calls.

Lymwin shoots another bolt after loading, but the bolt hits the grass.

Roland flanks the beast, but his attack misses in the darkness. (Note: the Baron doesn't threaten, so there is no actual flank.)

Grigori draws a wand and moves to the badly-wounded Baron, healing him. (You can only draw one, so your sword is still in your sheath.)

Round 6

Adeah fires again, but the bullet does not penetrate the creature's hide.

Rapunzel wildly and misses the creature. "Roland, far side of creek. Can't escape," she huffs out

Lymwin fires another bolt into the darkness.

Roland maneuvers around the beast and waits for Grigori's aid.

Grigori moves to circle the creature, and Roland quickly stabs it while it is distracted. The creature shrieks in agony, a long, drawn-out wail as it collapses.

Combat over! Wow, that was a long one.

Sovereign Court

Rapunzel cast light on her curved blade, and hurries to the Baron to assess the state of things.

Heal: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19

The Baron is most certainly dead.

Disgusted at her failure to protect the Baron, Rapunzel turns to examine the remains of the creature which is clearly not a tiger.

I have several Knowledge skills, but not sure which is most appropriate.

Adeah lowers her musket as the creature drops. She climbs down from the tree and joins the others at the body, slinging her weapon back over her shoulder. "What was that thing?"

Alas, you all failed your Knowledge (arcana) rolls, which would have told you it was a variant Leucrotta. Now that it's dead and with time to look it up in your Pathfinder's Field Guide of Nasty Baddies, you can make the i.d.

Sovereign Court

Male Varisian Courtly Crusader 3 -- HP: 26/26 | AC: 18 | T: 12 | FF: 17 | CMD: 13 | Fort: +6* | Ref: +3 | Will: +8 | Init: +1 | Perc: +3 | Channel 2/5 | Perform 6/6

The priest touches Rapunzel on the shoulder, with her permission, and she feels her wounds close up a bit.

He then kneels down beside the baron's body in grim silence. After retrieving a wooden box containing some rather interesting vials, variously shaped blades, tubing, bandages, and a hacksaw, he listens for a heartbeat with his stethoscope.

"Curses!" the priest exclaims as he looks over the baron's lifeless body. "Vwe have failed." Looking at his kit with contempt, "And I am out of embalming fluid."

With a sigh, the priest turns to his comrades. "Comrades, vwhile the society might be vwilling to restore the baron to life, and vwhile the baron vwould be indebted to the society for such an act of kindness, vwe are too far for the body to remain intact enough to make this anything but, at the very least, a dauntingly expensive proposition for our organization. Perhaps too expensive."

He thinks in silence on the problem, wondering what else he might be able to do... but seems fresh out of ideas.

Use the lingering cure light wounds use on Rapunzel... which gives her 2 hp back (previously rolled).

The mood is somber as the porters pack up the camp in the growing light of dawn and build a travois for the Baron's body. The leucrotta is expertly skinned on the spot, and the pelt brought along as well.

Reaching the hunter's lodge about mid-morning, you regroup with the Count and the rest of the porters. The Count is devastated by the news, but his shock quickly gives way to anger as he blames the Society for letting his father-in-law die.

"What kind of people are you, that would let an old man be mauled by such a beast? Five of you, and you couldn't do anything? " the Count rages, clearly pushed over the edge of civility by his father-in-law's death. "I guess you got what you wanted, though: a free ride to the jungle, so you can go loot baubles from other peoples' tombs... you can find your own way home, or stay here for all I care! I will have nothing to do with Pathfinders ever again!"

He continues to fume, but after a few moments he intersperses his comments with sympathy for the old man, and fear over what he will tell his wife, and how he will pay for the raise dead she will inevitably ask for.

Liberty's Edge

"These things happen when you hunt big game," Adeah snaps back. "He was the moron who couldn't get away fast enough. Don't go after what you can't kill!"

Rapunzel does her best to console the Count and relay the events as they happened. "The beast was taunting the Baron, and he seemed to let it get the better of him. We tried to protect him as best we were able. I feel personally responsible for this tragedy, and I will contribute to the raise dead."
