This is so much more exciting than cleaning up bird droppings all day, wouldn't you say Kizen? And to think, less than a year ago we were getting yelled at by some pompous Taldan Lordling. Pathfinders, us, I never would have imagined it Kizen. We must be on our best behavior, we've got a good thing going here you know... I for one don't want to go back to scrounging for my suppers.

A strange figure enters the scene. As the beards of most dwarves are meticulously groomed, so is that of his. However, this dwarf's hair seems to be done simply to keep it out of his way. He wears the regalia of a traveling priest and carries a bulging backpack. When he speaks, it is much less grating than one would expect, more akin to the tones of a deep-voiced human.

"Good day to you, fellow agents. I am Constantine, humble servant of Abadar, and I am here to keep you safe on our mission. While we are on the subject, does anyone know what that is?"

Since the first part of this adventure is a fair amount of role playing, I am going to start now, as some of this is more useful for some than other.
NOTE: As this is an evergreen scenario, and thus is repeatable for all players level 1, and singularaly at level 2, I am going to treat the game as though everyone has played it at least once, and thus offers the GM a couple of more options in the way of surprises that they can give the party.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
BEGIN ADVENTURE

You have been stationed at the Grand Lodge in Absalom, awaiting assignment for a mission of utmost importance. Things finally seemed in motion when Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng sent out a summons for available agents. Specialized in the history of Absalom, Dreng is known for putting off-duty agents to work on sundry tasks when he finds them resting within the city’s limits.

Coming to the meeting place—an odd choice of venue, as it is a street corner far from the Grand Lodge—a lone beggar in baggy robes approaches. The only figure visible in the constant drizzle, the beggar sticks out his hands for currency.

“Have you any coin to spare, fine folk?”

The question hangs in the air for only a scant moment before the figure pulls back his hood to reveal the wizened face of Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng. He gives a crooked smile, soaked head to toe from his unprotected time in the rain. His clothes smell faintly of cabbage.

“Sorry about that,” he says with a wink. “I always like to play a little joke on agents when I stumble across them during my jaunts into town. Now, why did I summon you fine folk here again…?” Dreng shakes his head from side to side, as though trying to knock water out of his ears, despite the constant downpour.

“Ah yes, the Wounded Wisp! I’m undercover now and can’t stray far from the site I’m watching, but I need someone to retrieve a package for me from that fine establishment. It’s among Absalom’s most storied taverns, you see, and one that holds a special place of privilege in the Society’s lore as the place where the organization began. Well, I could drone on and on about it, but standing out in the rain is doing none of us any favors.” As if anticipating agreement, the bedraggled venture captain produces a small slip of folded paper from one of his many stitched pockets. Dreng quickly shows a glimpse of the page’s contents: a map detailing the location of the Wounded Wisp bar.

“The bartender is a woman by the name of Heryn Gale, a fine lady who came to own the Wisp after the passing of her father from—oh, bah, it’s really getting too cold for me to give a proper history lesson! If you could just go to the Wisp, and tell Heryn you’re there to pick up my parcel, it would be most appreciated. I’ll be around here for several more hours at least.”

Please make a Knowledge(History) test as some characters may have a greater knowledge of the Pathfinder Society's history and its association with the Wounded Wisp. Remember, any Pathfinder can attempt this check untrained

Drukpa, you remember from your Pathfinder training the following information, told to you by your various trainers.
The Wounded Wisp was a bar once frequented by the original members of the Pathfinder Society before the Society was even formed. Inside the Wisp, acquaintances would share stories about their adventurous exploits with one another. Many volumes of the Pathfinder Chronicles came together under the Wisp’s roof. Famous Pathfinders like Eando Kline and the Seeker Osprey often stopped by for a drink while they relaxed in Absalom between assignments. Though not officially affiliated with the Society, the bar maintains good relations with Pathfinders, offering discounts and prompt service. The owners have always kept themselves and the Wisp afloat through the generosity of Society agents who spend coin at the establishment.

I didn't ever have much schooling. Aside from the short lessons I received so that we could better communicate with the lords that I served. Mostly just enough to sound foolish at the worst times really... I think I normally got more out of a conversation when I didn't say anything at all. There are a few pieces of overheard conversations that have stuck with me. I couldn't honestly tell you if any off them are truly true or not though, I just assume that what I hear from the mouths of lords and ladies is true. I mean most of them have spent time in an actual academy... I do my best to get by, even taught myself how to read.... Well, I had the help of a friend, her name.................

"I never said they were documents! No!" he looks around briefly for anyone that might be listening, and finding no one, he continues "what you are after is far more valuable. Before you judge, despite my current attire, I’m still a man of taste. The parcel is actually a special vintage of wine from the cellar of the Wounded Wisp. I’ve been sampling their finer wines in descending order of bottling. I dare not disappear from my current role in this district, but I also would appreciate some comfort items. After all, I doubt anyone would judge a supposed beggar sipping from a bottle of wine.”

He takes a moment and knocks the built up rain from his jacket, getting you even more wet, not that anyone would notice. "Why you? Why not? As a man of taste and stature, and as a Venture-Captain, is it not normal to have newly minted Pathfinders assist where and how I need them to? Is it not a way for me to judge how effective you are by seeing how you perform even the most mundane task?"

Because you're doing such an important job here, Constantine mentally scoffs at Dreng's comment that he can't leave his post. I don't wish to question my superiors in this organization, given their authority, but they aren't exactly putting it to its best possible use. Instead of voicing these thoughts, however, the dwarf looks to what further information can be gleaned. "I assume this wine will not be hard to identify among the others. Why does this require a full team of Pathfinders? And if you do not mind my asking, what is happening here that calls for your presence and supervision?"

"Right now, I’m following up on a group operating out of this district that I believe to be associated with the Onyx Alliance… it’s a bit of a long story." He looks right at the dwarf. "Why I choose to send an entire party? Simple. I want to see, given what I have heard - or not heard - from your trainers, if you can work as a group to complete the objective. Heryn at the Wisp will know what bottle I seek."

I don't know about all of you, but I don't want anyone thinking that I have bricks in my pants. If I have learned one thing from working for them Taldor lords and ladies, its never to stand around when you should be doing something more important. And if you don't believe me I have the whip scars to prove it. I don't, not for one second, think that this will be an easy task. There is always someone out there who wants to cause someone trouble. Someone who has nothing better too do than to kick you after you've already fallen into the mud. Surely someone thinks that it would do them good to make us look bad. I say lets get a move on. Get it started quickly and there is more time to fix your mistake when the thing goes wrong. No one ever got in any more trouble for starting a task early. Let's just go find this Heryn and and then get our scruffs back here to captain Dreng. Maybe you all have been on with the society for longer than I have, so this might not be as important to all of you, but this is the first chance I have to prove myself to them.

Slide #3

Built from dark, discolored wood, the exterior of the Wounded Wisp is the image of an iconic dive bar. Stained and barred windows obscure direct vision into the establishment, though ruddy yellow light bleeds from a window in the front hall. In the hours just before dawn, the building closes long enough for menials to clean and to give staff a rest. The only distinguishing feature on the Wisp’s exterior is a thick wooden sign hanging from above the bar’s entrance. A brass ring fitted onto the sign anchors a lantern—referred to by the staff as “the wisp”— that hangs there during the evening hours.

Upon entering the bar the smell of smoke and spilled ale assails the senses in this wide-open area. Walls of dark-stained wood make up the sides of the Wounded Wisp, while well-used wooden tables are spread throughout the space. A raised area in the back of the establishment houses several additional tables and eating areas for groups seeking more than just a good drink. An austere bar supported by kegs instead of wooden panels commands the northern end of the room. A stained-glass cabinet stands behind the bar, its dark panes cracked in several spots, yet not so opaque as to conceal the several dozen types of hard liquor within.

Heryn Gale is easily spotted working at the bar. When you approach her to request the bottle she responds "As you can see, the bar is very busy right now. The next shift starts in a little over an hour, if you can wait until my replacement arrives I will escort you down to the cellar to get it. Until that time, please, drinks are on the house, and I welcome you to get a good story or two and mingle with the other patrons here."

She does talk to you while mixing up another concoction and then delivering it to one of half-orcs. Given the level of noise and atmosphere it is readily apparent to everyone that she is telling the truth about how busy the bar is tonight.

"So," she asks you upon returning from delivering the drink, "what would you like to drink?"

You happen to notice 5 patrons leading commanding the most attention:
1. A Female Hafling leading rounds of song and dance
2. A Human Male talking both adventure and faith
3 and 4. Male and Female Half-Orc's they look very much related
5. Old Human Male reading a large and ominous tome

Haana's eyes follow Heryn to the two half-orcs sitting across the bar. eyes wide and full of amazement. Without thinking it, her feet are drawing her closer to where the two are conversing. Eyes saucers, she is now at the edge of the table they occupy. The two stop talking and stare at her. She then notices that she is about a foot from them.

Goodness! you must be giants. I have heard about giants in stories before, but I've never actually seen one! Is it true that giants eat their young! Thats what Gunther told me once... but he hasn't ever seen a giant either! I think he was lying. I bet that no one ever tries to bother you. They would probably be too scared that you would be annoyed by them. In which case you would raise your fist and cave in their skull! I heard that giants could do that! Crush someones skull in with a single blow!

I have also heard of gentle giants. Ones who are famous scholars and dedicate their long lives to the preservation of knowledge. I heard that along time ago giants used to be master craftsman and would build the most beautiful cities by singing to the stone that they worked. One such giant named Loial once traveled with and documented the adventures of a man they called the Dragon.....

They both look at Hanna like she went mad, the table totally silent. Then, because, well, reasons, they think you are joking and burst out laughing. They quickly down their drinks and raise them up to Heryn, and three fingers, hoping she will bring more quickly. The male one, at least you think its a male, pulls a chair out for you to sit.

Haana, you take a moment and look at them closely. They must related to each other you think to yourself, twins maybe, brother and sister absolutely. Strong looking, almost unnaturally so. Their weapons almost look puny slung on their backs. But, like the other in the Wisp, they are not hostile, and are already back to cracking jokes with each other, hoping you will join in, maybe?

Drukpa nervously sips his beer with relief. Puff’s Magic? Where did I ever get that idea? Sometimes I just make myself so mad.... Gratefully, he attempts to aid Quint’s efforts to gather information: ”Yeah, that halfling sure can sing! Does she work here? Or just a patron who appreciates a lively time?”

"Crikey." Is all Ierwin can say to that. Did she really need to go on like that while we're all standin' 'round like a mob o' dills out here in the rain?

I just joined the Pathfinder Society! maybe you have heard of it. Don't tell anybody, but I am actually on my first ever mission for them. Before they took me in I trained falco...

Haana looks around nervously before continuing talking. The rest of the bar patrons continue what they were doing. With one quick glance around the room again to make sure no one heard her slip of the tongue she continues.

I....um.... I lived in Taldor working for some of the nobles there. I didn't much like it there. I feel like my world is looking up from here on out. No one to answer to except myself! ...And the Venture Captains of course! I am trying my best not to upset anyone. I heard that if a pathfinder fails a mission particularly bad, that they assign them to missions with seasoned pathfinder veterans. Most dont make it back to the lodge on their first such mission. I sure hope that I don't end up failing so badly. Don't get me wrong it would be a genuine honor to get to go on a mission with a veteran pathfinder. I just dont know what I am even doing on THIS mission.

I am trying to pick up as much stray knowledge as possible that might be of some help to me down the road. So far I have learned that the best way to kill a skeleton is from a distance with a bow, that makes sense because if they were to scratch you then your flesh would start to rot away, as well as your mind, soon leaving you to join the ranks of the mindless skeleton horde. Monsters like Dryad, satyrs, and feiries can only be killed with silver weapons. and things like golems should be targeted by all of your mind affecting spells so that they can be incapacitated early.

Haana takes a large drink from the dark ale that was set in front of her while she was talking. For a split second her eyes grow large with shock and she chokes as she spits out the contents of the drink onto the floor beside her, clutching her throat.

What is in that!

Both of them burst out laughing when you spit out your drink. The male says between fits of laughter "you don't want to know, trust me. But, drink up, it will make you stronger! Besides, if you can't take on a stiff drink, how can you take on a fight?"

Garl and Shrade look at each other with a bemused smile. "Do you not know anything about half-orcs?" Shrade asks?

Garl interrupts before Shrade can get more than a word in "Well," he says with a sly smile, "Everything you heard is true, if only to keep our reputations going. As for us being Pathfinders. Yes, we are. We go where they need great fighters. And then we come here to enjoy our victories. "

"So," Shrade asks, finally getting back into the conversation, "What brings you here today?"

I know that a half orc is created when an ambitious human wants to gain more martial prowess. If he can find, and capture an orc and then inject 3 doses of orc blood into his own blood, for 27 days straight. then his body starts to take o some of the same attributes of the orc which he took the blood samples from.

Most of the time this manifests as added strength, or durability. but some who try are shocked to find that, in such cases where the orc was a shaman or pursued other, more intellectual paths, that they unlock a portion of wisdom that was unknown to them before.

I suppose I could understand the appeal for some..... But I dont think that I could ever do that to something. lock it up and force these experiments... It just seems a bit barbaric to me. I suppose if one could find an orc who was willing to share its blood... but I find that rather unlikely.

As for what brings me to the Wounded Wisp... Well I have been tasked with retrieving a most important package for a venture captain. He was otherwise unable to spirit himself away from his current mission and logically tasked a group of new pathfinders with the simple task of retrieving it for him. That is not to say that our mission is any less important. We are being tested! sometimes even the most mundane tasks can be enlightening as to the capacity with which those tasked with it perform as a group. I hope to prove that I am at least worthy to be a pathfinder. I wasn't so sure about it when they told me I was to begin training... I only thought that I may be of some use to them.

I train birds you see. I was sure taht an organization as reputable as the pathfinder society was always in need of a good falconer. I suppose they saw something else in me, and, if it puts some food on the table, I am not going to complain one bit.
