Nightflier's Midnight Game Thread

Game Master nightflier

Set in the grim world of Aryth, Nightflier's Midnight is a game that speaks of almost futile hope that shines against the darkness.

Male Danisil - Evil Subtype Wildlander/1 Rogue/2

I got me some rogueishness, sadly don't have a set of lockpicks and tools though. Never seemed much use for it living in the wilderness.

Should have mentioned it. Sorok and I could have made you some back at the forge.

Didn't occur to me for some reason. Ah well, I can live with the -2 for improvising for the moment.

Whoops. I totally didn't get that message. Of course, I check Facebook irregularly at best, but I have it set to e-mail me when I get messages. ... sure it was me?

Anyway, we'll get it figured out. There anything in particular I should be thinking on in the meantime, or just wait until the e-mail contact?

Sorok, I have noticed Dwarvencraft among your skills. What does that refer to?

refers to this.

basically, it's my attempt at giving a Dwarf Paragon an ability that allows them to be good at all those craft skills that dwarves as a people excel at. It rolls all those craft skills into one skill.

I'm fine with that - it slipped my mind.

Guys, the game is going really slow at this point. Is it because of the holiday on your side of the pond or something else?

For me it's just the end of the year and the increase work it implies. But I'm still posting on week days.

Dark Archive

Yeah, I have a lot of work as well. I have noticed a huge decrease in posting rate, so I am wondering if the group needs some time for RL and away from the game, perhaps?

I can understand why you would want to postpone this game. In my case, it is just I am in a bunch of other PbPs and sometimes I don't have all the time I have to devote to this game.

I don't want this game to end, but if it would be easier on you, I certainly understand that, Nightflier.

Dark Archive

Guys, I have decided to put this game on hold until all of us can commit to daily posting. I have enjoyed this game immensely and I don't wish to watch it struggle. The game will start again after New Year or sooner if you can do daily posting. Thank you all for wonderful gaming experience and I hope that we will continue this game together.

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

I'm not sure I understand. I haven't been posting as much because I didn't feel like Ragnar would have much to add, but I've been checking every day. Given the Dwarven-centric nature of the location, I figured Chops and Sorok would be taking point.

It's true we've slowed a bit, but I think just pushing people to post more rather than keep a hiatus would be a better way of keeping the game alive (I really don't want this game to die)

What do we need to do?

Is there anyone out there who really can't keep up the schedule?

Same thing here. Sorok took point so I figured I'd just wait and see where we were going. I didn't have much to add either for this scene.

I think what might help in these kinds of exploration situations is to set up a standard operating procedure/party formation and let one person handle leading the party around until something happens that warrants a broader reaction. We sort of have a loose one, but it's never been explicitly formed and discussed.

How's this:

Unless otherwise stated Chops and Anang are up front as an advance group. The ravens are scouting in the air, felina is sniffing about near by looking for brain waves and Pebble is moving beneath the surface if possible looking for potential dangers and testing for thickness of floors and walls and whatnot. All are being stealthy (taking ten on stealth and perception is good enough for more passive exploration I think. It will cut down on time rolling) They will stay about staying 60' feet or so ahead of the group. They all have Darkvision (except felina, but she's a cat), so won't need light (also, moving in darkness grants a bonus to stealth!)

Sorok is next taking point with the main of the group, followed by Ilona, Gilian and Solvistania. Duncan and Ragnar are rear guard.

Ragnar's 3 Ghost Lights will sit around the group in a generally triangular formation, two in front one in back, making a sort of ven diagram with the party at the center. Each casts light in a 30' radius (out to 60' for dim light). That's a total of apx 604 square feet of light, so we're good there.

The 4th torch, which is usually hanging out in Ilona's sword, can range out to more than 100 feet in any direction as a free action every round. If we need light anywhere, we've got it.

Basically, the advance group moves until they spot something. Nightflier just gives out spoilers like he has been doing so we can report our findings in character. Anything that requires expertise (Sorok being a good example here), we break formation long enough to investigate. Then on the expert's go ahead, we continue.

In the cases of choices between one direction and another, when there isn't any quick and clear choice, I nominate Gilian and/or Ilona to make decisions for the party. I don't think any of the characters would dispute their leadership in most instances.

Muni has a passive perception of 23, and the rest of the scouts are within 5 or so of that. We also have tremor sense and telepathy out there, so the odds of us missing anything are pretty low. I don't think we need to be continually posting "I move with the party" or "I look around (insert perception roll here)"

If something's about to happen, Nightflier can just call for a check in int he OOC thread letting us know that we're about to need to be more active.

Anyone have any thoughts on this or anything they'd like to add?

This is a good way of handling it, Ragnar.

Far from it that I want this game to die! This has been the most pleasurable GMing experience I had for a long time! I've just noticed that the posting rate has gone from 10 posts per day to 10 posts per week. I don't want to finish the game before you all reach level 20, but I don't want to push the game forward if there is no interest amongst the players or if real life prevents them from playing. Now, if you wish to proceed with the game, I'm all for it - but I do need at least five posts per week in order to move the story forward. I don't want to push the players to post when they are not in the mood to do so - so that's why I wanted to pause the game. So, essentially it's up to you guys to decide what to do next.

As I have said, I will commit to five posts a week, but they will more be in the evening than during the day as I in meetings most of it till the end of December. I just want to add that there is more a case of players being paranoid and wanting to get the exploration done properly, waiting for the lead one to go forwards. If we go with DH suggestion of a standard exploration, this should help speed up things.

A good strategy.

I like this SOP. Anang and Chops are both highly mobile, stealthy, and can hold their own if need be if they encounter something and have to stick it out until the party catches up. Sorok can still see the scouts with his hundred-million foot darkvision and is probably the best linebacker in the group if they have to high tail it behind the line and reform and get healed suddenly. In this case, Sorok and Duncan step up and provide Defense! while everyone gets busy.

Dark Archive

Well, I like Ragnar's suggestion. It's just that I can't move the game forward by myself. I need a cooperation from you guys. That's why I thought that you perhaps need some time off this game.

I'm in the same time zone as Gilian, btw, as you probably gathered by now.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

I like the SOP as well an ccan commint to 5 a week. I've got a wierd schedule where my days off are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, where my posing is heavy and I work 10 hrs a day the other days.

I can still get a post in on those days but only around 3 or 4 am.

I sooooo don't want this game to die. It's really a unique experience.

Male Danisil - Evil Subtype Wildlander/1 Rogue/2

I have had a weird shortened semester, 8 weeks instead of the standard 10 and have had the same amount of lectures/tutorials/bits of work etc due as I would for 10 weeks so I haven't been spending a huge amount of time on the web. I can commit to 5 posts in a week but I might have to disappear for a few days every now and then just because the workload gets ramped up.

Also, I'm cool with the SOP and I'm at GMT so I really have no idea what I am doing awake at 1.30am when I have to be up at 7 tomorrow.

male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2

I'm thinking for those times that work or school swamp us, maybe just agreeing to a once every few days check-in in OOC.

Just a "following. Nothing to add right now." to make sure Nightflier isn't waiting on anyone before continuing.

I also agree with Ragnar's SOP.

Male Black Blood Dwarf Fighter 5

Ragnar has a very reasonable suggestion. My work schedule has me gone from 7 am to 5 pm so most of my posting comes in the evening. I also don't want the game to die and can commit to the posting rate of at least 5 per week.

Guys, I am working on a timeline of my Midnight campaigns. Currently it's a year 91 of the Last Age. I need your years of birth.

Gilian is the youngest, year of birth 72.

Ilona's is 68

58

YOB 55

YOB is 35 years before the start of the age so I guess -35? Hah.

Um....
I think you're going to have to give me a bit. I need to look at the timeline and figure out what year it was ten years before the Last War.

I guess I could just put -11 ;)

What about your brother?

Hyperactive Lazypants Bard 2

I was unsure if I should chime in on the posting thing, but I figured for the record, when I show up in game - I can post almost every day, but sometimes it'll be real late PST, depending on how busy I am at work.

Duncan's year of birth would be 66th
