I'm going to withdraw. As much as I'd love to play in this campaign and play with this GM in particular, I think I'm biting off more than I can chew.

Especially since I recently starting two new projects, one at work and one at home.

And keep safe, Steve.

Cheers. Although it was called a cyclone, it wasn't that big a deal for me personally. (You know you're doing okay when the biggest gripe is "I have to browse the internet on my phone? Unbelievable!").

Hi! Dotting for interest.

A couple of questions:
* Do you have any more detailed information about the call for help that the group is answering?

The town has been plagued by orcs - the details were sketchy, but it sounds like an organised warband are repeatedly raiding. Word is a "generous reward" has been offered for anyone who could deal with the orc threat.

Certainly interested in getting in on this!

Thinking of going Druid ([Grass]Land) but willing to swap out if we want to potentially avoid duplicate classes.

Race is going to be Wood Elf.

4d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 6, 4) = 16 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 6, 5) = 19 17
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 4, 3) = 15 12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 5, 2) = 13 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 4, 5) = 19 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 3, 5) = 19 16

Welp. RNGesus decided to be kind to me it seems O_o

And now to fill out the Character Sheet and write a background!

Hi Niyaga

For an archfey patron in Golarion, I like to use The Eldest. Perhaps the Lantern King would be a good substitute? Or Ng the hooded?

Hey, this is Slips.

Created the alias for my submission and this is her.

Thanks Slips.

Just to let people know. We've just arrived for three days in a remote place with very dodgy internet.

I'll review everyone's submissions on tuesday when we get back. That will also be a 'final call' and a check that everyone js still interested. It's going to be easy to find six PCs - the hard bit will be excluding some people. :(

Closing date is still Wednesday next week for those on the fence or who havent yet finished their character.

Very good - enjoy! Good luck to all!

Thanks Monty

I've made a couple of little changes to Eilren
1. I've made the Lantern King as his Patron
2. I've made him from Celwynvian in the Mierani Forest as it fits well with his build. Also handy to start in Riddleport given his short background outside of forest life

Well, I just realized my Half-Elven Warlock with pact to the Lantern King is out the window, thanks Eilren! No hard feelings I'll make something else :P

GM do you have En5sider? There are some character options I'd like to try from there.

Added a backstory to Kraz.. I think everything is fully complete now.

After some back and forth I decided to apply with Silvio Callgari Pazzi, Human Rogue. He is a character that I have played twice before on these forums, once in a Pathfinder Savage Tide game (where he died) and once in a Serpent's Skull Dungeon World game (which sadly ended prematurely).

I thought it would be fun to do a sort of reboot and reimagine him as a DnD5e Rogue Swashbuckler. I've used the standard stat array when generating the ability scores (15 for dexterity, 14 for intelligence, 13 for charisma, 12 for strength, 10 for constitution and 8 for wisdom).

Crunch and fluff:

The Fluff
Description
Silvio is a young Chelaxian man with a significance and confidence in his steps. His constant smile reveals two rows of perfectly sculpted white teeth, charmingly glinting in the light. He has brown shoulder length hair and ruggedly unkempt mustache which he carries with the grandeur of a true hero. No matter what apparel Silvio happens to be wearing he sports it with a simple and sophisticated grandiosity. Simply put, Silvio makes the suit.

Background
The Pazzi family have long had a lot of pull in the city of Corentyn, so growing up Silvio never lacked for anything except for excitement. While his mother and father and three elder sisters were content with going about the everyday life of a Chelaxian noble house Silvio soon realised it was not for him. From the day he learned to walk he payed more attention to the stories of sailors and guards in his father's employ than lessons and lectures designed to "make him a true Pazzi". In fact the only lessons Silvio did pay attention to (and became quite good at) was the fencing lessons he nagged his father into arranging.
One day, faced with the choice of being shackled to a bride his father had chosen for him or the freedom of the open sea Silvio snuck onto a trading vessel called The maiden's kiss set for some foreign port leaving only an empty space where his training sword had been behind.

Always adapt with words and quick to make friends Silvio had no trouble infiltrating the crew and his adventure begun. The life at sea did not match up to the chelaxian nobleman's expectations though. Everywhere he looked he could not see any potential for plunder, adventure or glory. Only toil, and that's not what stories are made of. Or Silvio for that matter.

A week into the voyage Silvio staged a coup and one night he took command of the ship and proclaimed himself the captain of the vessel. His reign over the maiden lasted until morning, when the real captain woke up, a grizzled seaman of some forty years. The ship was returned to normal within an hour and Silvio was cast into a lifeboat for mutiny and set to die, either of starvation or in some storm. The original plan had been to just throw the chelaxian overboard but Silvio managed to talk the captain into placing him in a lifeboat then sail away leaving him to die. But by the grace of some god, or perhaps the malice of some demon, Silvio endured and after two weeks at sea the lifeboat glided into the harbor of Riddleport.

Once ashore he found the city to be rife with opportunity. Unfortunately they all came with a boss, which did not sit well with the young nobleman. All except for one. A cry for help from a nearby village plagued by orcs. Silvio could fix that.

Motivation
Silvio is looking for the great adventure. Excitement, gold, wine, glory, women and whatever else keeps the world turning. He will jump at almost any opportunity that shows promise to fulfill any of the above, or at least to set him on the right path towards it.

DM Monty Haul, I am away at a con from Thursday next week and I'm busy prepping three PFS scenarios for the weekend. I doubt I can post much if I get lucky until the Monday after.

Sorry Pale King!

I have managed to master the arcane art of setting my phone up as a wifi connection - an achievement that deserves the epithet "trivial" but it's a big deal for me. :)

As such, I'll start going over submissions in the next couple of days. Selection is still Wednesday. It also means I can catch up on queries...

I did, but not any longer. I'm not averse to signing up again though. What are you looking to use - something big like a whole class or something? Or just a snippet from here and there?

No worries, thanks for the heads up.

Can I just clarify, is that Monday the tenth you'll be back on the board? I always struggle to parse "next week" - especially given time zones and it being Monday here and Sunday (I presume) where you are.

Scarab Sages

I'm not entirely sure how I missed this recruitment thread. I'm *very* interested in trying out 5th Edition. I'll try to have a submission up tomorrow afternoon. (Sorry it's coming at the last second!)

There's nothing wrong with submitting near the end of the (admittedly long) recruitment period. No weighting will be given to when submissions were received.

Note the change to stat generation midway through the thread - you can roll for stats and fall back on point buy if you don't like the result, treating that as a kind of "floor".

Scarab Sages

Sounds good. Do you have any recommendations for character submissions? (This is to anyone really.) I'm actually up for trying out just about anything in 5th edition.

I'm afraid I nearly always play human fighters (in any system) so you'll get quite dull advice from me. :)

When trying a new system, I always recommend players read through the "flavor" bits of classes and pick whatever appeals to them. In my experience it's easy to overvalue or undervalue class features if you try and analyse the various options mechanically without actually having seen the game play out at all. Best to just pick on theme and trust the game design will give you what you want.

Once you've played one game once it's easier to make sense of what value various abilities have. (The various ways bonus actions get used, for example, is something of a trap in 5E - giving yourself lots and lots of potential bonus actions is an expansion of scope but not of power. I've seen a few multiclass builds in particular where the player ended up frustrated as they just weren't able to do what they thought they could).

Scarab Sages

I'm typically a bard/wizard/witch player in pathfinder. I've branched out a bit but I always come back to those as the most fun. But from what I've seen of 5th edition, all of the classes have something I like. Also, the changes to the game as a whole make some classes more appealing.

I'm sure I'll figure out something and get it up!

Scarab Sages

One last question before I figure everything out:
What sort of tone are you looking for with characters? Are we local heroes responding to a call for aid, mercenaries, or whatnot? If I understand correctly the group will have formed ahead of time to answer the call. Is there anything else about the oncoming adventure we should know?

Thanks!

The Exchange

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Monday the tenth it is.

Scarab Sages

Reading up on Riddleport, I think I have an idea for a bard that could work. I wrote him up for a different game, but there's some play on the prejudice against half-elves, which works really well in Varisia. I'll edit the background and have the full sheet up later this evening!

Here's Pik! The Half-elf bard from Korvosa. He is, for a poor boy from the city, oddly uninterested in treasure or gold. He is far more concerned with dying alone in a gutter unknown and friendless. However, despite being charismatic with an easy smile and seemingly very friendly, he has a very hard time actually trusting anyone.

Background:
Growing up on the streets of Kovosa was rough for a young half-elven child. His father, an immigrant from Kyonin, came to Korvosa trying to make a new life for himself. He settled down and married a local girl, but because he lacked any local ties to the Mierani elves he was seen as an outsider and had trouble finding honest work. Falling in with the wrong crowd, Pik's father was well known as a gambler and a drunkard. One night he simply didn't return home. Whether due to being caught up and killed in some criminal activity, or just uninterested in the burden of family, there was no sign of Pik's father. His poor mother, overburdened with having to care for so many children, often left Pik to his own devices. Eventually, disease took both his older sister and brother and one of his younger brothers died in jail, after being convicted of petty crimes. Still some of the family suvives and makes their lonely lives in the poorest quarter of Korvosa.

The Shingles is a dangerous place for a child, but unlike some of his brothers, Pik avoided becoming a criminal (mostly) and scraped for what he needed. As he grew older it became harder and harder to survive without committing some petty crimes but Pik did was he could to pick up odd jobs. As a young man he decided he needed to get out of Korvosa and travel the world. He's been lucky, and been picked up in a few caravans for a time. And he's been unlucky, and run into a bandit or two. All in all, he's managed to pick up a trick here and there. He's currently found himself in Riddleport, a hive of scum and not a little bit of villany. But he's heard that there's honest work to be had. A small village north of here needs help and Pik is of a mind to lend a hand along with a few other like-minded folk.

Edit: Oh. My. God! This is literally the second time in a week that I've misread the same exact instructions in the recruitment thread. *Both* times concerning rolling stats. I totally parsed that as roll *or* point buy even though you pointed it out. Twice. This has been, by far, my roughest week ever. I said last time I'm normally better at reading comprehension, but this is getting out of hand.

Okay, here's the rolls:

Rolls!:

4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 5) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 5) = 21 17
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 5) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 6, 3) = 17 15
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 6, 5) = 20 16
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 1, 6) = 19 18

Edit Two: ...what the what? I'm not even sure that's fair. Uh, yeah, I'm not exactly sure I want to use those. That's...crazy.

Wow, the interest in this thread has exploded!! For now, I'll bow out, have a great run folks!

All aboard the insane stat rolls train it seems!

Just found this. Will get something up later!!

Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 4) = 17
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 6) = 18
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2, 4) = 15
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 6, 3) = 15
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 4, 5) = 15
Stat: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 4) = 19

Huh. Yeah I guess those stats'll do...

A great group to choose from - I do not envy the decision process. Will this close tomorrow, as anticipated?

Yep - I'll give people until the end of Wednesday and then announce the group on Thursday.

I'm currently looking things over - I agree it's going to be a tough selection. I suspect I'll fall back on rolling dice to a substantial degree.

Good luck folks, I agree its going to be a tough decision. In that case may the dice be with us!

How are we handling starting wealth, btw?

Good luck peeps, may RNGesus smile upon you for a spot to play!

CircadianRythms wrote:

You can either get equipment by class/background or by rolling for wealth and buying your stuff from scratch - it's a matter of player choice.

Aaaah gotcha. I went with class/background. My crunch is all done and I'll get a backstory up shortly.

Here's Atreus the Black. This is the first character I've made for 5e so if anything's not correct please let me know. I went with a Spartan inspiration for build and background.

Hi CircadianRythms - I'm at work at the moment so can't give it a thorough check through. It looks all correct and proper at first glance!

One point is that this game is set in Golarion (starting out recently departed from Riddleport in northern varisia) - so perhaos you could tweak your background slightly to make it golarionised?

I'll be happy too. TBH I'm not super familiar with Golarion is there a Greco-Roman type civilization?

Answered my own question with Google :p I'll post some tweaks shortly

Changed the background to be more Golarion-appropriate; Atreus is now Taldoran.
