Seeing the way open to a position where he can finally provide some relief, Mlinzi disengages, leaving the Goatlings he's been fighting prone and injured. He casts a quick spell, doing his best to keep out of the Goatlings' reach as he does so, then moves up to engage the big goat and the minions surrounding it. As he does so, he intentionally leaves himself open, trying to draw attacks from the prone goatlings to leave Lucina and Teniel clear to move freely once he's gone.

"You guys clean up here. I'm gonna rescue Tavros!"

Round 5

Maks, growing increasingly frustrated with the situation, flicks her tail as she surveys the battlefield. Tavros is injured, Pamburu is in worse shape. Well, everyone was injured. And the stupid little goat had nearly broken her hip. Her weapon hummed as she turned back to the task at hand. She reached forward and muttered in celestial once more, only stating her verbal components, this time 'Glorious Restoration' as she placed her hand on Tavros.

Healing: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Makoto's tails swished angrily and her eyes narrowed at the paltry amount of healing she was able to manage. She shifted past Tavros, keeping her hand on him, so he'd know where she had gone. As she did, her tail began to glow, and indigo light filling her space, before the bull vanished.

Hero point for Invisibility cast on Tavros. 1 Hero Point Remaining, 9 HP remaining, 0 Bard spells remaining, 1 Channel Energy (of many) used. 6 rounds left invisible.

===== Round 5 ===== Init: After Makoto/before goats

I believe since I didn't use my prepared spell from yesterday and haven't had a chance to prepare yet that I should still have it.

The now invisible Tavros does an absolutely amazing backflip up in to the air to land with an elegant twist back on his feet. Really, if you could see it, you'd be crying at the beauty of it. He does a small dance while muttering something under his breath and feels an invisible force washing over and protecting him.

Round 4

Lucina invokes some more sleep magic.

Goatling 7 Will save DC 16: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 - fail

The goat topples over snoozing solidly, its spear clattering to the ground.

Mlinzi attempts to cast a spell while still defending against his foes, but steps on an unstable rock which causes him to falter in his casting, losing the spell.

Teniel slams his weapon down on the prone Goatling 8 who drops unconscious from the well places blow to the temple. Heroically, Teniel also heals himself.

The shadowy skeleton holds its own against the Big Goat, tearing into it with shadowy claws.

Big Goat will save DC 20: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 - fail

The Big Goat is convinced by Teniel's shadow puppet mastery, and the illusion is as real as it gets to him.

Don't forget to add a penalty to Pamburu's stabilize roll = to his negative hp. He would have a -4 and probably not stabilize.

Round 5
Makoto is able to heal Tavros and then heroically casts invisibility on him. The goatlings near by bleat as he disappears from their view.

Tavros is able to get his shield spell activated.

The Big Goat tries to smash the skeleton.

Big Goat two handed heavy mace vs skeleton AC 16: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 1 = 13 - miss
Big Goat gore vs skeleton AC 16: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 - miss

Wounded, the Big Goat is unable to strike the agile skeleton. It bleats angrily in frustration.

Goatling 4, still prone tries to attack Mlinzi.

Prone Goatling 4 vs Mlinzi AC 22: 1d20 + 2 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 1 - 4 = 9 - miss
Prone Goatling 4 gore vs Mlinzi AC 22: 1d20 - 4 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) - 4 - 1 + 1 = 1 - miss

The Battle Goat, and Goatlings 1 and 5 know Tavros was just there, and having just dealt with an invisible foe, they have a hunch. They sniff the air trying to pinpoint Tavros (move action, using Scent). They smell his large minotaur stink right where he was. They attack the square hoping to bring him down.

Goatling 1 short spear vs Tavros AC 25: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 1 = 11 - miss

Goatling 2 stabilize vs DC 10: 1d20 + 1 - 10 ⇒ (17) + 1 - 10 = 8 - fail, -1 hp

Mlinzi curses in Vanaran as his spell fails. Still, he has no trouble evading the prone goatling's laughably uncoordinated attacks. Irritated, he brings his massive hammer down on one of the Goatlings that had been next to Tavros. He wasn't sure where his big friend was now, but he guessed he might still be there.

Ah... I meant Tavros's second attack. (it hits harder anyway)

Round 5

Lucina steps in close to Goatling 5 and aims a powerful punch at the creature's head. She is able to hit extra hard as the creatures attention is drawn away. her blow strikes it at the base of the skull and it drops, despite having a really hard head.

Mlinzi swings his hammer hard against Goatling 1 and cracks is square in the sternum. You hear the breastbone crack as the air is knocked from the creature's lungs from the blow. Gasping for air, it passes out and lies on the ground convulsing.

Tenial resummons his bloody minion, and bids it do attack the Big Goat.

Big Goat will Save DC 20: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 - fail

The skeleton does it damage, tearing into the Big Goat shadow magic power inflicting a nice wound.

Tavros tired of being a punching bag, summons all the power in his horns, and rams the Big Goat leader, HARD, very hard. He slams his head square into the leader's head, literally butting heads like two wild beasts squaring off. While the minotaur is slightly smaller currently than the 12' goatling, he more than makes up for it in power, magic, skill, determination and luck. You had extra bonuses to hit for being invisible but didn't even need them. The force of the blow knocks the Big Goat off its feet. Tavros as soon as you hit it, you felt its skull cave, and not even a sound escape from its lips, more of just a soft uff. The goatling leader collapses in an unnatural heap. You know that is it dead. The goatling leader's magic wears off and returns to the size of a normal goatling.

The leader down, you turn instead to headbutt the small battle goat, slamming your head down on it hard, again probing that the bull is superior to the goat when it comes to this sort of thing. Yon don't kill it or drop it, but your massive blow nearly staggers the creature, and it wobbles as you hear the thump of heads, and its neck collapses a bit.

The remaining goatling, alone, prone and heavily wounded, save for the critically wounded goat, drops his weapon and throws up his hands in surrender, bleating a plea of submission. The small battle goat retreats carefully but submissively withdrawing without any further aggression, clearly wounded, limping a bit.

Combat over.

Mlinzi eyes the small battle goat as it limps off, but then decides it's not worth chasing after it right now. If he needs to, he can probably track it down later. He can feel the savage rage within him burning to come out, but he holds it back. Still, he strides over to the prone goatling and kicks away its spear. He begins to speak to it in every language he knows.

"Who are you, and why did you attack us?" he asks, first in Common, then in Vanaran, then Sylvan, then Celestial, and finally Goblin, hoping to get a response. (Assuming he doesn't get a response to any of the previous languages.)

When he's done, he goes back to sit down next to the goat that Mlinzi is questioning, giving hive a wide-eyed hurt expression the clearly asks, 'But...why? ;_;'

If no one else has gotten a response as they 'interrogate' the goat, Makoto will ask the question in Sphinx and Gnome, just to be sure that they don't share a language at all.

Having made certain that any goats that aren't dead will not bleed out (using her trait), Makoto sits, and begins to summon her Eidolon, once more, moving through the same motions as before.

Total count of gear:
10 bronze shortspears
33 bronze javelins each with a javelin quiver and belt
1 bronze heavy mace
healer kit
component pouch

Beyond that the goatlings do not wear clothing. The quiver has a shoulder strap to sling it over your back and another one that cinches around the waist to keep it from swinging around too much. The buckle is crude and made from bone. The belt and quiver are crude and leather. The healer kit is a leather pouch with some crude bandages and quite a few herbs. This is a 'homemade' kit, not professionally prepared. The bandages are very crude and probably made from wool. Oddly they have no tools, twine, equipment, food or any sort of provisions or even a waterskin.

None of the languages you speak to the goatling in bring any recognition. It seems clear to him that you are trying to communicate with him, and he seems complacent and attentive, but sort of shrugs and bleats with incomprehension when you talk to him in the various languages. He also seems very crestfallen about their failed attack, and the death of their leader, although clearly he must understand this is the risk of battle. He is quite heavily wounded as well, and seems in quite a bit of pain now that the adrenaline of battle has worn off.

Makoto you have made sure all the goatlings are stable. Only the leader has actually died.

Teniel made sure the sleeping ones were knocked unconscious non-lethally.

Linguistics to check if any of the bleating resembles any language we've ever heard of: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17

It seems to have some harsh sounds perhaps similar to dwarvish or giantish, but its so vague that it may only be a guess. If goatling had the same root language as something you speak, that would have been 10,000 years ago, and has long since evolved into its own language.

Maybe with a lot of luck you may communicate simple one word noun concepts, particularly if you had something to point to. Perhaps through shadow puppetry ;)

aid: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 +2 to Teniel, and now they're on the same page :p

Miyu Michi appears, fully formed, from Makoto's tail flames. He looks slowly around himself, then up into the sky. "I have been away for less than two hours, and you've already gotten into trouble?" it seems good-natured, but there's also a hint of disappointment.

Makoto shrugs to the eidolon, her resplendent thrush flying over to fill him in, once more.

Makoto compares notes with Teniel, who was always a bit better with linguistics than her. "Maybe we can create a pidgin?" she suggested. "Once we have that, we can communicate with at least this ."

She then pointed to herself, turning her attention to the totaling. "Maks." then to the bird and agathion in turn. "Sora. Miyu." Then pointed at the goatman.

Seeing that the others seem to be more skilled in this endeavor, and having no success with communication, he turns his attention to healing his friends' wounds.

I don't know how much damage people have sustained. None of the numbers I can find look right. How damaged is everyone? Mlinzi is at full health. I've got 9 charges of Heavenly Fire to use, and since it's only 1d4 healing, this is the best time to burn through it.

Heavenly fire can only heal an individual once. I believe everyone other than you can use a heal. Maks is down 8, Tavros is down a lot, Teniel is at a little over half. I didn't keep up with Lucina.

As Mlinzi begins to heal the others, Maks remembers how his magic works, and decides to favor these creatures with steady gaze... measuring them against what they had just attempted to do. Using paladin's detect evil.

Golden flames shoot from the Vanara's palms, but rather than burning his allies, they feel slightly better, and their wounds begin healing.

The goatlings do not radiate any evil.

Seeing the goatling flee and her allies trying to stop him Lucina would cast sleep on him in hopes of a nonlethal capture like the others, if the goatling falls Lucina would point it out to Teniel so he could knock him out without risking waking him. If the sleep failed she would let the goatling go and begin stripping weapons from all the others.

Mlinzi nods. Now that the adrenaline was leaving his system, his good sense was returning.

"Right. Maybe this was just a misunderstanding. I mean, we are a somewhat... eclectic... group, and with our sudden appearance, they might have just been trying to defend their homes against a perceived threat."

With that, he sends a wave of golden fire washing over the conscious goatling, watching carefully to see what happens.

"They are murderers, Makoto." Teniel replies. "Defenders usually give warnings, or something—they were prepared to stab us in their sleep. Maybe just their culture is violent—but I do not think it is wise for us to remain here too much longer."

We can also pile the goatlings 30' away from us and use up the rest of Makoto's channels before they refresh...

"Or maybe they felt that a fox of my size could feed their entire tribe for a day." she shrugs. "Things may be different now. And besides, if we just leave them half-dead on the beach, they'll wake up starved. They likely have families as well that are relying on food from them."

"Whatever they are, this one's neither particularly good nor bad," Mlinzi reports, noting how the creature is neither healed nor harmed by his fire. "I'd suspect they were just trying to survive one way or another. Whether they thought we were food or enemies or whatever, they probably weren't attacking out of malice. I still suspect they thought we were a hostile force. Can't blame 'em, really. We appeared out of nowhere and started tramping through what they probably think is their territory. You've gotta admit that Tavros, at least, looks pretty scary, and some of our other brethren are even more so. Once they started fighting us, we summoned skeletons, which also isn't normally something that good creatures would do."

He looks around the camp, then picks a half-burnt stick out of the fire and finds a flat, thin rock. "Here, don't know if this would help, but maybe you could draw pictures or something to help communicate."

He scans the shoreline, concerned for the well-being of the other groups. Were they attacked, too? He'd been too distracted by the battle to even think about it before, but if they needed help...

Makoto nods. "Or we might have done something to offend them. There's a whole host of things going on here. I don't suspect that it's just random, and assuming that they're murderers because we don't understand them is exactly what I'm sure a few of our friends have dealt with."

Maks begins to work with what she was given, painting a picture of herself with the charcoal, filling in the lines with yellow by crushing dandelion against it, and then saying Maks. Then pointing to herself and saying 'Maks' so that maybe the thing would get the concept. It might not be able to pronounce her name, either way.

Take 10 for an 18, if Painting is applicable to using charcoal for sketching (it really should be)

The goatling nods and begins to understand. "Maks." He points at himself "Mau'aor"[b]

It points to the sky and waves its arms, [b]"Maks?" He also points at the ground.

Maks points up above them, head tilting slightly. "Sky." and then at the ground. She looked to the others for a bit of help here. They had many, many words for ground.

He points to everyone and says "Sky." He seems curious about some of the weapons people have. He looks at Mlinzi's hammer and Teniel's sword. He says "Skyyy braka." as he points to them.

Tavros looks slightly sad that Mlinzi labeled him as "scary". It's pretty different from his own view of himself. But he quickly lets it float away from his thoughts.

"Maybe he's asking if we fell from the sky?" he suggests. He then tries talking in Giant (and his other not tried yet languages) to the creature, repeating the earlier questions.

Makoto, a linguist, was pretty certain she could not pronounce that one.

"Wait. Is he asking for our word for sky or ground... or is he asking if we're from angels or demons?" Maks suddenly wondered.

She hugged her spear tightly, and patted it gingerly, swaying it slightly in the air to make it hum, before holding it out for the goatman to investigate.

The head of the spear was made from iron that had been tempered to have a prismatic appearance, several ribbons dangling from just below the head. The shaft itself had been painted a multitude of different colors, creating a mosaic of rainbow-colored scales.

Mlinzi watches the dialogue, doing his best to figure out what's going on. Though linguistics and social interactions are not things he's terribly good at, he is quite good at reading people, and does his best to figure out what the goatman is trying to say.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

Mlinzi you get a hunch that he definitely misunderstands your nature. He marvels at your weapons, possibly further evidence that you are from another world. Your language and appearance all seem to solidify his belief that you are sky beings.

Makoto you move your spear and as it hums, the goatling's eyes widen and it seems a bit fearful. It takes a step back, shaking its head and says "Nuu Cumu!" and points at the ground and also points at the dead leader.

Tavros you try talking in giant and the goatling listens but doesn't seem to really get anything out of it.

The Vanara scratches his head. "But how do we convince him otherwise? Maybe if we share our food?" Mlinzi looks to the impressive pile of fish that Makoto's companion had managed to gather during the night.
