After Garavel hands Kaspar back to Alem, Zoisa tries to get Garavel's attention.

"Hey, Garavel...you vetted everyone for this expedition, right? Can you tell us anything about Dashki? The guy was poking at the wage about the same time we were, before Mr. Hoof-in-Mouth here insulted him by insinuating he was responsible and claiming Eloais was a woman."

Zoisa, you've seen him trim his beard in a small round mirror hung from the wagon before. Mentioned in first post. Also the mistaken gender was more of a player mistake than Ray's...but its cool, its kind of funny that way

He waves his hand over his hot coffee "Gender is so arbitrary. We are all living creatures, are we not? Future civilizations might learn to look past such labels...*sip*"

December 26th Update

Huh....Zoisa, that was a singular scene between Alem and Garavel as he mentions leaving the group of people to search for his monkey. As such, Alem is away from the group and deeper in camp away from the cookfire, at least, that's how I saw it. Probably should have made it more clear. I'll work it out next time I post

Not really sure what to make of the interaction between Zoisa and Reuleaux, Sey turns to Miriam and says quietly. "it wasn't supposed to be such an obvious investigation. Besides I can't think straight when I'm hungry, I thought some food sounded like a good way to go before getting started. I spose I'll go try to track down this Daski fella. Have a good evening."

Seyhanna checks to see if Fawziya is joining her, and then heads off to look for Daski.

Before you go, Reuleaux hands you a small pouch full of wadded cotton balls. "For the nose." he states matter of factly, perhaps for the first time not lying or embellishing.

December 26th Update

So Garavel and Alem are back at the cookfire, Seyhannah has left to look for Dashki possibly with Fawziya

@ Reuleaux, Zoisa, and Alem (maybe Fawziya)
Garavel has appeared at the cookfire with Alem, and glances at Zoisa as she asks her question.

"He was hired by the Madam and she trusts him," he responds.

Sense Motice DC 15:

Though his face is emotionless, its hard to tell, but the canter of his voice is hesitat, probably unwilling to discuss such matters in front of mercenary company.

@ Seyhannah (maybe Fawziya)
You go off to find Dashki, and after a few minutes find him alone, far off from camp, looking out into the distance warily. He hears you approaching, and utters two very stern words.

"Go away."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

In a moment of empathy Reuleaux smirks "That reminds me sir, myself and the others had wanted to talk to you...we may have a way to rebuild the wagon and perhaps recover some of your lost finances. Perhaps we could adjourn for a moment, I have a sketch-up of the plan on vellum with my other things...this way...*wink*"

"Can't do that. Just like you, I have a job to do here." Walking to stand closer, but still giving Dashki some space. "Keeping an eye out for gnoll attack? With recent events, perhaps your skills should be focused toward camp."

Kaspar grins sheepishly as Alem gives hims a stern look. "Yes Garavel, thank you. I hope he has not caused too much trouble." Confiscating the fruit, he stores it in his robes while Kaspar watches with eyes like saucers. "Come along, you." Alem places Kaspar upon his shoulder in time-out.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

It appears there is more to this Dashki fellow than Garavel wants to be known. Perhaps he might discuss such things in a more private setting. In any case, whatever plan Reuleaux has concocted should prove entertaining.

December 26th Update

@ Reuleaux, Zoisa, and Alem (maybe Fawziya)
Garavel nods, and bids the mercs to hurry up with their meal as there's still tasks to get done before they can set out.

He beckons you to follow him over by some currently empty tents. When he is sure you are alone, he faces you, stern look as always.

"Alright, what do you wan to know?"

@ Seyhannah (maybe Fawziya)
Dashki says nothing at first, but then reaches around to his back and slowly pulls out his dagger. Its a curved style, very similar to the scimitar that hangs at his hip. There's a tense few seconds, and then he pulls a sharpening stone out as well and begins to work at the edge.

"I don't want anything to do with that little worm," Dashki growls. [b]"And that includes those in his little group. I have my job, and I'm doing it. If that bothers you, take it up with Almah."

It seems he has a very special place in his heart for Reu. A very hateful place. He is not going to cooperate.

Diplomacy, Influence Attitude: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Assuming at least indifferent as his starting attitude that should bring him up a step. Below is a brief summary of the 1 minute of continuous interaction required for this shift.

First, Realeaux delivers the 55 gold coins found in the wagon, explaining that Garavel is the only one he trusts. He adds how in the final analysis it should be his (Garavel's) money anyways, given the ownership of the caravan...but is eager to express that this is of course just his opinion, and Garavel is of course free to make his own choices. Finally, he recounts the experience with Dashki observing Ray as he and Zoisa investigated the burnt remains, and how he claimed to be innocent when accused.

"...one other thing, earlier you said 'Almah' trusts him. Is that so?! What about you? As a long ride caravan master you are no stranger to character judgement."

Human Cavalier (Standard Bearer) 2 - HP: 21/22 - AC 18/T:12/FF:16 Fort: +5, Reflex: +1, Will: +0; Perception: +0

Back at the cook fire...

"Like Seyhannah said, Almah wished this examined subtly," Fawziya says quietly to Miriam. "As I am taking you into our confidence, I expect the same amount of discretion from you that Almah placed in us." She withdraws a pair of silvers from her pouch and hands it to Miriam. "We are both sell-swords, so I would not expect you to do this for free. These are yours, as repayment for your information and silence on the matter. There are eight more waiting for you at the end of this investigation, assuming that your tongue has remained still at the successful conclusion."

Following Seyhannah after Dashki

"If that be your wish, so be it," Fawziya says coolly. "From what I have been told, however, I suspect that Almah will not judge you kindly. There are those that claim you set the blaze to kill off your rival for her affections. If you wish us to report that to her, we shall. If you have reason for us to examine elsewhere, however, this would be your chance to offer it. I suggest you consider your next utterance to us carefully." She crosses her arms, waiting for the gnoll expert to speak.

So much for good cop. Time to go bad cop!

December 26th Update

Reuleaux, Zoisa, and Alem
Garaval eyes Reuleaux, a steady look on his face as he nods and pockets the money.

"Yes, Almah trusts Dashki as an expert, and having seen him work I am inclined to believe his skills aren't faked."

Reu only:

The subtle raising of an eyebrow only detectable to you gives you the feeling that Garavel knows more about you then he admits freely, perhaps one of the reasons he scouted you specifically.

"However...I have never trusted Dashki, and if he were the murderer I would not be surprised. I have no basis. Call it.... a feeling."

Perception DC15:

There seems to be a small metallic nodule protruding from Garavel's head under his hood.

Seyhannah Fawziya
Miriam takes your money without complaint, does one of those tying her lips together and knotting them motions, and smiles.

Dashki stays silent. You're about to walk away when he suddenly speaks.

"Pugwampis. If I had to guess. It would have been pugwampis that killed the fortuneteller."

Seyhannah glances at Fawziya doubtfully. Turns to Dashki and says "I havnt had the pleasure of meeting Pugwampis. Perhaps you could tell us more about them and what you have you seen to make you believe they are the murderer. I hate to be melodramatic but the fate of this expedition could rely on us finder the perpetrator."

Seyhannah is skeptical to say the least, but she believes in second chances and Dashki may be due for one.

Reuleaux's left eyebrow twitches slightly, noticing the 'nodule'.

Is it a crown or some weird appendage/tumor?

Ignoring it momentarily he continues "Oh? In what way has Dashki proven himself in the past? Obviously he knows how to conserve water...the lack of showers, I mean. Just jesting...go ahead."

Alem silently watches the exchange between the gnome and the major-domo. Disappointed at first that there appears to be no plan for the wagon after all, Reuleaux does prove to at least be amusing to watch. For all of his strangeness, he is proving to be surprisingly effective.

December 26th Update

Reuleaux, Zoisa, and Alem
Perception is for anyone, not just Reu.

Reu:

Remember to use spoilers, and its like a metal thing that literally sticks out from the side of his head.

"We have seen him give a demonstration of his skill, and he has shared information on gnoll habits that we have been able to use to avoid and discourage their approach. Trust me if not him, Dashki is worth his weight for what he brings to this group."

Seyhannah and Fawziya
Dashki seems to soften a bit with Seyhannah's more gentle approach. He relaxes his stiff posture, and he relents what he knows.

"Terrible critters what crawled up from the Darklands below the earth. 'Jackal rats,' some folks call 'em, on the account of their pointed little heads. They worship gnolls as gods and infest their communities like rats. Wherever pugwampis go, bad luck is sure to follow. The gnolls hate pugwampis because of it, and try to kill them all the time. But they always come back. Perhaps their bad luck caused the fortune-man's candles to start a fire? Yes, pugwampis. I am certain it was pugwampis."

Unable to contain himself longer "Garavel, forgive me for being blunt but that is the most spectacular eyebrow stud piercing I have ever seen. Back on the coast, there were some tribes from the north that might reach one-tenth that size, and even those were built up slowly over decades. That's truly a remarkable dedication to fashion. No, wait, you're not a man to care about trivialities like that...hm..." he snaps his fingers "Oh, it must be some kind of religious symbol! Don't tell me..." he starts rattling off a list of belief systems which include piercings, pausing and assessing each...

She gives an embarrassed giggle.

"It is a Pactmaster's favor," he interrupts Reuleaux, "a device commonly implemented by those in my line of work. It protects me from mind alteration to a certain extent and ensures to my employer. While it does hamper my emotions, I find the trade-off acceptable."

He does brush his head piece to one side to show the metallic nodule embedded in his head. But at the speed in which he returns it back in place, it may be he wears this headpiece for more than heat protection.

"Is there anything else?" he asks. "Have you completed your investigation?"

Seyhannah and Fawziya
A knowledge Nature or local would work here

"They're small creatures, usually not alone. I doubt they would have stayed this long after causing so much chaos though."

You both move to the scene of the fire once more. It does indeed appear to have smallish footprints of a humanoid mixed in with the normal sized human ones. Oddly enough, there even seems to be some fresh gnome sized footprints all around the wagon as well.

With a worried glance at Fawziya, Seyhannah draws her scimitar and moves into defensive crouch scanning the area for signs of attack.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

If no imminent danger is located:
Seyhannah will recommend heading back to the cook fire to alert the others of Gnolls being so close to camp. Also to report what conclusions our investigation came up with.

If imminent danger is located:
Seyhannah well yell out an alarm. If Fawziya advances Sey will as well to cover her flank.

Garavel rolls his eyes at the strange short man who had probably spoken more than 5 lifetimes. He repeats himself.

"Have you finished your investigation?"

Seyhannah and Fawziya (at the cart)

Fawziya, you don't know anything about Pugwampis.

Seyhannah... as you look around the cart for some kind of clue, you hear a sudden noise inside. In swift motion and a small yell you jump in and slice at the attacker, a burnt pice of caravan cart wood that fell from the ceiling. A mighty foe indeed!

"Well, I thought you would never ask. Yes, there is a dark cloud that rests uneasily over this caravan...call it an "ill wind". A shadow moves in." he wiggles his first two fingers, making them walk in the air "I felt its stirring in the night not 3 days past, but assumed it was the scorpion venom twisting my perceptions again...but you see Garavel, it was indeed something much more..."

He goes on to recount a wild tale of spirits that only he could see, which were somehow immune to the powers of Sarenrae. Only visible in shadow, the "decaymorphs" as he called them encircled Elois' wagon like the moons orbit Golarion.

"...so you see while it might seem like fancy, given the lack of evidence at the wagon you must admit only one option, however implausible remains: the decaymorphs enchanted the candles in Elois' wagon, causing them to ignite out of their hatred for the living. You see, Elois was a supernatural woman, and would naturally be their only point of focus from the ethereal window..." he holds up both of his hands, making a circle to view through.

"Another case for the stacks of history." he adds.

In the dead silence that follows he is quick to amend "Ah! Man, not woman." and ducks his head reflexively.

Zoisa, I kind of wish you would at least roll your opposed sense motive on my lies before spilling the beans in front of NPCs. Alem listens to the gnome's strange tale with interest, interrupting at various points to ask clarifying questions. He had never heard of these "decaymorphs" before, but then, he was ignorant to the vast majority of knowledge to be had. There were many who interacted with spirits and other entities that most mortals go about their whole lives without ever being aware of. Reuleaux would not even be the first person with such powers that Alem had encountered in his travels with Hassan.

"These decaymorphs sound sinister to be sure. But what is their nature? Are they planar beings, from the Plane of Shadow perhaps? Or are they undead who must be banished from this world before they can rest in Pharasma's Boneyard?"

When Reuleaux finally reaches his all-too-reasonable conclusion, Alem is most impressed. "Yes, yes. If it was not someone from our own camp, and my investigations would point that it was not, then it must be someone from the outside!" There is just one small problem with this conclusion. "But one problem remains. According to Father Zastoran, Eloias was a charlatan with no true magical ability. A priest of Nethys would not make such accusations frivolously. How can Eloias serve as the - you called it the 'focus point from their ethereal window', yes? - the focus point if his spiritualism was false?"

"Blast, if only I still had access to the libraries of the Sararaen mission in Katapesh...I'll admit, I'm working with only vague recollections of what I've read in the past. But yes...hmm...if Elois was neither supernatural nor a woman...that's perplexing indeed. Perhaps his imitations were enough to spark the spirits' ire...or there is some other spirit resembling decaymorphs I'm unable to recall..."

"I never did verify my translation from the Celestial, I suppose an alternative could be "weakening shade"... Indeed, they are only visible in shadow...I suppose we could set a trap at night and test the hypothesis that spiritualism attracts them. If their vengeance was not sated perhaps they will return. Reuleaux does not recall anything about Pugwumpis.

Just to clarify, you have no idea if those are gnoll tracks by the wagon Seyhannah. I thought about letting that detail go, but I'd rather break 3rd person than let this get confusing.

As you guys compare notes on what you've learned, you hear the crunching sound of footsteps in sand behind you. It seems Almah has arrived.

"A mercenary has informed me that you have concluded with the investigation as you had time to sit down and have a meal with them. What have you discovered?"

Garavel gives you all a stern look, clearly indicating his hand-picked adventurers should do their best to impress the boss.
