Request / Petition: Breadth of Experience feat errata

Homebrew and House Rules

Scarab Sages

First of all, let me say I adore the Breadth of Experience feat and applaud whoever thought it up; all my Elven characters take it.

HOWEVER, one fly in the ointment: It's presently restricted to Dwarves, Elves, and Gnomes, although there are other similarly long-lived, non-core races for whom it would be appropriate (Dhampir and the "genasi" races come to mind). SO, I am requesting errata something along the lines of changing the prerequisites to "100+ years old; any race that is not yet considered to be in the 'Middle-Aged' or older age category at the age of 100."

Sovereign Court

Agreed.

Anyone else on-board?

Liberty's Edge

Agreed...though I doubt any official response will be forthcoming.

It might get changed in a reprinting of the APG. More of an update than an erratum though.

The thing to remember is that this feat and the APG came out a good while before other long lived player races were added to Pathfinder. Sure, some races like Aasimar and Merfolk had been the Bestiaries, but they weren't fleshed out into full races with backgrounds and complete stats yet. Most non-PFS GM's I know will let this slide on a house ruling based on that argument.

The problem with errataing this is, what do you change the line to? We don't know the age range for every race. With some races like Androids you can take a guess that they can live for a good long time. But what about some of the more obscure races like Kasatha, Gathlain, or Syrinx? Are they automatically barred from this feat just because they're unknown?

Eh. Just drop the racial requirement. Why not allow 100-year old humans to take the feat? It's not super-powered or anything.

It certainly wouldn't be unbalanced, and I don't see much abuse potential. :)

In this case, the maximum age for Humans is 70 + 2d20 years old and the GM is supposed to secretly roll the for the max age. So if you start off with a 102 year old human your character has a pretty good chance of dying of old age the next year if the campaign goes long. Also some races like Half-Orcs we know can RAW never even reach the age of 100 without some form of intervention. So, we run into the same situation of not knowing life spans of the more obscure races. My gut says a race like a Monkey Goblin isn't going to naturally make it to ripe old age of 100+, but I don't see any documentation to support that.

I'm not saying it will be overbalanced to open this feat up to all races. I'm just playing devil's advocate on how finicky it can be to errata the wording on this feat.

Sovereign Court

Hey, if you want to risk it by starting your character as an old dude.. :P

But I don't see any flavorwise obstacles to a 100-year old human having a breadth of life experience.
