Sometimes I even find my own answers. "A monk's attacks may be with fist, elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a monk may make unarmed strikes with his hands full. " So, I think you're ok.
Ranged weapons make more sense if you want to attack from 5' back more than the AoO's with this combat deal. They also make more sense if y'all allows the monsters to come to you (Some monsters just aren't bright enough to think twice before running towards a group of party members holding reach weapons).

The Black Devil |

Resent. As in 'sent again', not as in 'angered owing to'.
Regarding weapons and unarmed, LOL, that it's in the class deescription, I would not have been looking there. I was going to argue I can kick with hands tied, so therefore with hands tied to a pole, so therefore with hands holding a pole.
As for use in ranks, I agree that's a traditional use of a reach weapon, but Devil wants to be in direct contact with the enemy, so as to better serve the party with his AC and Crane Wing powers. Devil's reach weapon was intended to be the long lever of his Combat Reflexes. And I'm not unaware (though Devil hasn't thought of it yet) of the potential for an Enlarged Reach Combat Reflexes with inbound swordsmen scenario.
And you mentioned ranged. Devil uses this when he can't close. It's not a bad option, much better to hit ranging than FD melee, but he really does feel he serves best while more directly at risk.

Or Brandon.... Hmmm... I know the archer said he was going to miss through friday...but the others...
Guys, I love y'all to death...but if you're going to be gone, you either need to say something ahead of time or something else. Cuz I really am not super sure how to proceed wtih 4/6 or 4/7 players are stating actions and the rest are not. I'm not trying to be mean here, but we need everyone on board to keep things moving. Remember, this Pbp is a 3 post/day minimum based on the 10a-2p/2p-6p/6p-10a EST time slots. even if you think you don't have much to say, you should show you're at the table to doing or saying something. Even if its just posting an internal thought!

Beppo van Drotske |

It's true, some of us [points emphatically to self] have not been good at communicating about days when we may have trouble posting. I have had a couple of pretty fire-drill-filled days at work this week, and apologize for not posting a quick notice.
That said, I think at least some of this will continue (got to keep those hours up!), so I am not sure that I will be able to maintain our three post minimum on a consistent basis.
I think this pace is a good one, so it might be best for me to drop out in order to keep from dragging the pace down. As long as the rest of the group (or almost all of it) can maintain a good posting pace, Tessai and Brandon should be able to fill the front-line roll capably.
I welcome any thoughts y'all might have.

Indeed. It's about communication. If you're out for something, just say so. That way, I push the story ahead without feeling even a tiny bit guilty that I did not wait for your input. It also influences other important things that I cannot go into detail if I know for a fact that a person cannot post during a specific post.

We are all going to have those weeks, I'd rather someone go dark or more sporadic for a bit than to disappear. When it happens to me, the pressure of reading things and getting caught up overwhelms, I say don't let it. Just give a heads up and tag back in when you can. We have a great thing going here and I'd hate to disrupt the chemisty with a loss or even a new addition.

![]() |

No comment? Interesting! Lol. I'm fairly excited about it! Basically means that we can run those two campaigns any way we want and still earn chronicle sheets. Unfortunately it does not include council of thieves... So it will have to wait a spell....but this definitely changes what I'm running next!

![]() |

Ditto on that. I started running Rise of the Runelords for a small, local group, but it quickly fell apart when one of the player's had to change schedule. I liked what little I played. I also liked the idea that it ties in indirectly with Jade Reagent (one of my favorite ones) and directly with Shattered Star.

Aemon Brooks |

I'm still not 100% what all this PFS mean's and chronicle sheets?
But I've really wanted to play Rise of the Runelords for along time now. Playing Jade Reagent at my table game and i'm really enjoying that so the fact they sort of tie in together is really cool, and i hope there will be more of these games now.

Aemon...yeah, it's all for PFS. Before you were on board and CoT, that's what we were doing...but it didn't work out.
Pathfinder Society Organized Play (PFS) lets you play with a character that's completely portable. Your PFS character may participate in a regular ongoing PFS group in your home town...and then you might take him to GenCON for some PFS action there. If you move, you can participate in PFS events in your new city. This contrasts with other campaigns where, if the group falls apart, or you move, your character is pretty much not playable anywhere else. Of course, for all this to work, and keep players balanced to a degree, there are a number of rules (some of them quite arbitrary and/or meta)...not to mention, everything your character earns/buys/etc must be documented...on chronicle sheets.
Playing in PFS events is entirely different than AP's and Homebrews...and has its own appeal. What's neat about this is that now there's a way to have some cross over. As you play Adventure Paths, you can earn chronicle sheets (essentially, gold, fame and XP) for your legal PFS character. Before, these two activities (Playing in APs and playing in PFS) had no cross over.
Black Devil... it does make me regret...just a little...that we're not running one of those two sanction campaigns. The only reason I don't push to reset, being the huge PFS fan that I am, is that this continues to be a lot of fun and for the most part, the group chemistry has been really awesome.

Beppo van Drotske |

Yo - even if it doesn't finish off the shadow beasts, that was pretty bad-ass what we just did right there.
unrelated: I hate to bring this sort of thing to the GM's attention, but I'm pretty sure Beppo took FOUR Dex damage (ouch!) rather than two.

![]() |

Thanks for the corrections.... about the flanking and Dex damage...I've fixed both on my worksheet. None of them have changed the outcome thus far...that mistake was made when I had a SB attack BD incorrectly ...but since BD blocked it...well, it's all good. LOL. Because of how busy I am, and the complications of 'going back,' I rarely do so unless its an easy fix, or it mistakenly resulted in a death...but at least the status is fixed going forward.

Brandon Harcroft |

Going back a couple of posts, a really need to have a good look into the whole Pathfinder Organised Play situation. My group of table top players switched to PF mainly because of the occasionally streamlined rules, community support and most importantly the adventure paths. That being the case I have next to no knowledge of PFS.
Everyone raves about ROTR so I want to see what all the fuss is about but having said that, I am really enjoying the dynamics of this group so I`d be keen to continue this.

Brandon Harcroft |

What I'd really like is a set by step guide for beginners. I' m trying to read through the info on the site but I' m having trouble loading various pages. I think I'll have a good look into it when I have some time this weekend

Tessai |

Heeeeeyyyyy.
LOL. Food for thought!
You know how bad I want to rub this in someone's face if we did it... "Nah nah...we're playing the Play by Post the way WE want and still earning Chronicle sheets!" Sorry...I can be petty, hahahahah
Well, ok GM-JC you convinced me. I'm gonna stop applying for other RotRL PbP on the boards... NOW!
No turning back now... :D

![]() |

LOLz.
The sad thing is that if the AP sanctioning idea works out, they will sanction other APs, including CoT. However, I can't give out credit/sheets because we will have already run it (credit cannot be given retroactively). If there was majority interest in chronicle sheets, it would make more sense to do RotRL now, and do CoT later on (assuming they will sanction it).
If only they announced this two months ago, hahahaha.

Corellon Aelasar |

I'm in a ROTRL now, but I'd love to be in one for PFS with this group, and especially this GM. Its technically allowed, but that's all up to the GM.

![]() |

LoLz. We've started some chatter here!
Well, it is no secret that I'd rather do something that ties into PFS, even if it just earns us sheets and it not tied in directly. This Pbp group originally was a PFS deal until someone crashed our party. This new sanction deal is a perfect solution (if we only had it earlier) as it gives everyone permission to play the AP's however they want, and earn chronicle sheets to apply to their seperate, legal PFS characters. That's super exciting. And while I wish they picked CoT to sanction first, RotRL is a very nice, classic adventure path. I've heard nothing but good things about it. And, for those of us into PFS, it does make more sense to do RotRL now, and play CoT later in hopes that they sanction it, since sheets may never be filled out retroactively.
However, I recognize that not everyone who is playing here is into PFS. And for those who are not interested, there's really no incentive to start over with something new...especially given how we are playing CoT so far, and that's been a blast. We have a good group, everyone is having fun, and that's worth its weight in gold. I'd hate to do anything to anyone's fun. I said I was going to run this AP, and I don't like letting people down.
We *could* run two at once...the problem is that at this point, I don't know how well that would work out. My job can be pretty demanding at times. There are days where I'm just barely getting my posts done...especially during combat. Thoughts?
