Reaver's Roar

Whoops, I shoulda known that. Anyways, onwards with what is not at all a frustrating fight!

Kenza lobs another vial of holy water, which once again goes wide. Kalangkang sends a bolt of force streaking towards the undead, solidly impacting it! Jeskit, Kahwen, and Merill recover from their fright and come running back into the room.

As near as Taizen can tell, the Poltergeist doesn't seem to be moving much. It is much more focused at hurling items at Kalangkang!

A book slams into his chest and a candelabra clips him on the shoulder, for one point of damage each!

Kalankang releases another bolt of magic at the creature while Kenza continues pelting it with holy water. Both attacks hit home, and you hear an unnatural ethereal scream and see a puff of insubstantial smoke rise into the air and disappear, and all the items flying about the room drop to the floor.

I'm going to use your perception checks from when you entered the room because there wasn't really time for them before you got jumped, adn to keep things moving along.

With the hostile spirit dispatched, the group searches the tower thoroughly. You find two lockboxes hidden in panels under the floor. The first one contains 1,000 gold. The second is locked and will need to be opened to find its contents.

Kahwen does indeed spot a trap on the box, but is able to deftly disable it, then open the box, revealing an additional 3000 gold worth of coins in the box! Kahwen feels a bit foolish for not acquiring a fine set of tools sooner. Kalankang does not detect any magic in the room, except perhaps the lingering ethereal vestiges of the poltergeist. Likewise, Merill turns up little of interest, finding mostly moldy, decaying alchemy books, broken vials, and dried herbs that, at this point, are impossible to identify and almost certainly useless. You return the funds to Shiela, who is once again delighted by your success.

Hurry! To the agent handing out assignments! You might have time for one more, if you hurry!

“There were two women at the pre-auction who paid their deposit in Minkaian coins which, according to our sources, may have been stolen during a recent caravan raid. If such is the case, the duo no doubt have dubious intentions. The women call themselves the Duchesses and they likely have ties to one of Magnimar’s criminal organizations; I suspect the Rushlight Society. Still, it is their fnances and not their intentions that most concern us. Some of our more reliable street contacts informed me that the two women were last seen entering the home of a local merchant named Windun Landers. Perhaps not so coincidentally, Landers has a wrought iron rushlight mounted on his door casing. Head to the man’s residence, and see if you can’t fgure out how much money these “Duchesses” have. If all is as I suspect, they don’t have enough to bid competitively. I’m also near certain they’re using stolen funds, so leave whatever gold you fnd. I don’t want us bidding with illegally gotten coin—that’ll create more problems for us than it will solve. Lastly, whatever you happen to fnd, do not involve the authorities. I cannot risk the courts subpoenaing your testimony during the auction.

Kahwen sets up outside the house to surveil it for a few minutes. It is what one would expect from a merchant of his caliber. I'm not sure of the placement of the Rushlight. If it's too high to reach then Kahwen just waits for someone to knock on the door. If it's a level he can fiddle with...

It strikes Kahwen as odd that a man of this wealth and prestige would allow so obvious a design flaw to stand. As the party crosses the street and someone prepares to knock on the door, the tengu fiddles with it, seeing if it will move or if there are any hidden catches or latches on it. As much out of curiosity as anything else.

The door is locked, though not trapped. Kalangkang opts to cut right to the chase. He knocks, and after a few moments, a well dressed man answers the door. He begins to greet you when Kalangkang interrupts him.

Um... hello, good sir? How may I...

The man is taken aback by the sudden threats, and bumbles around a bit trying to compose himself. It looks like he has steeled himself to deal with this unwelcome intrusion, when a scary lizard man starts shouting at him, once again completely destroying his composure.

Um... come in I suppose? I do not know anybody by the name of 'Duchess', but perhaps we have some mercantile business we can discuss?

He ushers the group into the house, and leads you to his office. He is sweating at this point. When he gets to his office, he motions for Kalangkang to enter.

Good sir Kalangkang, perhaps you'd like to enter my office to discuss... whatever business it is we might have. Your companions could perhaps go check out the guest quarters than any of my associates are privileged to stay in whenever visiting the city? They are upstairs, at the end of the hallways. Do see that you don't break or steal anything.

His eyes linger pointedly on Jeskit with the last line.

***OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT***

The last of the attendees are shuffled into the Cathedral of Abadar and the crowd eagerly await the beginning of the auction. A portly man takes to the stage, and with a voice like a foghorn declares ”The auction is open!” which sets off a hum through the crowd as people start jostling for position and readying their auction bidding paddles, as though they were cutlasses with which to defeat the auction itself!

Kresch Vaor looks around at the readied auction-slayers with a broken resolve “Bah, too much for an old key. Proctor, I’m out. Have one of your clergymen transfer my deposit to my personal account.” then sits back down.

The bidding then begins with fury, paddles being thrust into the air representing thousands of gold at a time

The Duchesses seem a bit distant, and very quickly exit the bidding.

As the numbers rise, Maiveer Sloan calls out, he pleads with the auctioneer, “I don’t have the funds on hand, but let my organization put down credit on the key. I can have the extra funds in a few months and you know we’re good for it.” The Auctioneer purses his heavy lips in sympathetic understanding. The Proctor interjects ”The rules state this auction would be a fast sell only with coin in hand” Maiveer pleads further ”Sir! I protest! I have been victimised and robbed - and though I make no issue of it now I protest that I would have had the coin had it not been so! The rogues, robbers, and conspirators sit right under this very roof and gain from this injustice!” The proctor, having none of it, simply turns to Sloan ”Contain yourself or the church will have you removed.”

As order is almost restored, a group of toughs barges in and heads straight for Dymal Rinks - ”Minvandu wants a word”. He begins to protest, but two burly half-orcs simply grab an arm each and pick him up and start walking out. Sheila Heidmarch makes a gesture that is very clear - do NOT get involved. Minvandu’s chief legbreaker pauses at the Proctor ”Sorry about that interruption, bit of confusion needing to be dealt with. Whatever deposit Rinks tried to put down on the auction belongs to our employer, Mr. Minvandu. I’ll send someone around later to collect it, after the boss has a few private words with Rinks”. Rinks is then dragged out of the auction house, kicking and screaming.

The auction begins again in earnest, with some Pathfinders baulking at the sums being thrown around and consider wandering to a nearby tavern instead. The number of bidders begins to rapidly thin…

Doctor Landis starts making an offer, then thinks better of it - some concern playing at the back of his mind no doubt. He lowers his hand, and simply gestures that he’s cut himself off by waving his hand across his throat.

Falrig Sneve seems spooked by Doctors Landis withdrawing and it triggers him too “Too rich for my blood. Fold!”

With only Pathfinders and Lady Kaddren in the bidding war, the atmosphere gets tense - it is clear that Lady Kaddren is determined to win… yet as she is about to bid a breathtaking sum, a runner presents her with a note which she quickly reads. After, she grimaces at the assembled Pathfinders and their Venture Captain and in a threatening tone says, “This time, you got lucky. From here out, you might want to watch your backs.” Then she turns to the proctor and tells him, “You can close my bids out.” After, she tucks the note into her cloak and storms out.

The Auctioneer continues “Going, going, gone! And sold to table seven with the red coloured paddle for a final price of sixty thousand gold pieces! Table seven please send one representative to the front of the room to claim your prize!”

A seasoned Pathfinder, Eadie Navhelan from the winning table strides out to collect.

Without warning, a tremendous flash of light and smoke appears behind the auctioneer, and the very fabric of reality is sliced open. Seconds later, a black-robed figure steps through the rift and pulls a jagged black-bladed dagger across the auctioneer’s throat sending a shower of blood into the screaming crowd of bidders. The remorseless assassin snatches the Runecarved Key and in a fit of mad laughter bursts into dozens of shadowy black forms, each fleeing from the cathedral in a different direction.

Begin Act 4!

"HUZ-zah?" Kahwen's cry of triumph transforms to one of surprised dismay as the auctioneer is murdered only moments after declaring the Pathfinders the victors.

"By the Abyss!" he mutters as he rushes after Kenza and Jeskit. He is much better partnered up with someone else in combat than he is by himself so he moves to a point where he can back either one of them up.
