"NO! Thorny... don't tempt fate!"

Liam blushes a little when after a pause nothing seems to happen, then turns his attention to Eli and her discovery. Thinking it might be safe enough after all, he takes out the ledger, "Nice ring. What does the note say?"

He draws the basics of the room in the journal, jotting down the placement of the furnishings and cursory description, making a special note of the audible nature of the bearskin.

You're not sure if it was Thorny's kick or Eli disturbing the objects on the table, but things begin to happen. A swirl of light coalesces over the rug and suddenly there is a real bear in the room, immense, vengeful and very close!

It is a clear, but windy day as a gruff looking dwarf, covered in the dust of the road, strides into town. Apparently talking to himself at a volume too loud to be considered a mutter, he says "So this is the mighty Belhaim, eh? Don't look like much. Still, there is a history of dragon killing here, so let's take a look, eh Bessy?"

Anyone close enough to hear and consider the words can only wonder who Bessy is, as there is no other living creature near the traveller.

Elbows on the table at the Wise Piper Inn, Edo Wakefield holds a dangling drumstick in his left hand as he drains his fourth ale with his right. A barely contained belch erupts from his maw as he waves his empty mug at the nearest tavern worker. "Another!" he shouts heartily, splashing coins on the table for payment.

Sometimes too loud and often too brusque, his week-long tenure at the Inn has dulled the expectation of decorum from those around him and turned at least a couple strangers into evening collaborators of nearly true tales.

Talia Orem sets a fresh mug down in front of Edo. "You should eat something with that," she says. "We bake the best bread in Belhaim, and the lamb stew is my father's recipe."

She wipes her hands on her bar towel and asks "Are you in town for awhile?"

Brandor strolls into the tavern (what a coincidence!), smells the stew, and his stomach immediately growls in anticipation.

Several of the inn's patrons smile into their beer. This is not a new phenomenon in Belhaim. But several others glance over to a gnome sitting a few tables away. She looks to be middle-aged with a wild shock of scarlet hair. She smirks and waves Brandor over to her table.

"That's a good way to lose a lot of coin. Everyone in Belhaim will bend your ear for an hour with stories of Aeteperax the Mighty and his reign of terror. You're not here for the treasure, are you? It's been gone for centuries. The heroes who slew Aeteperax used the fortune to build a monastery and spent the rest on a comfortable retirement."

"Ah, treasure... sure, sure - as a dwarf, I will always appreciate a good gem or weapon of quality to be sure. But I hail from those that have had to deal with dragonkind, and I am on a quest to find as much as I can of the horrid beasts so that I might rid the world of them! But, yes... there are more things in life than just vengeance. So, a monastery, you say? They must have some records of those events. I would be interested to see those. Aeteperax? I heard there was a legend, but I knew not the name. Thanks for that."

As Brandor takes a seat, he turns and looks for someone to motion over for orders. "A dwarf of my word, what can I get you to quench your thirst?"

She grins. "Well, you're a might late, Master Dwarf. The monastery is in ruins these five hundred years and her records lost to the swamp."

"Talia does a fine brown ale. You can buy me one of those and I'll tell you the tale of Tula and the Worm."

"I'm Bassy, by the way."

Bassy then relates to The Tale of Tula and Aeteperax and the History of Belhaim.

Liam stops running as fast as his little legs carry him as he gets close to the bridge over Rogue Creek. He bends over at the waters edge, forcing himself to focus on the slow running water as he tried to catch his breath in between the sobs and exertion.

Blood and tears streak his cheeks as he tries to take control of his emotions. Getting down to his knees, Liam washes off the sweat, blood and tears on his face. Can't panic. Need help, but not cause panic. Belhaim doesn't need panic. Gotta tell Lady Devy.

The tears and sobs start anew as Liam recalls the slaughter of his newest friends. The spattered mixture of the bears blood and theirs spots his clothing.

After some considerable deep breaths and settling down, Liam picks himself up and walks at a hurried pace to Devy Manor.

"Lady Devy, it was horrible. Eli, Val, Thorny... they are all dead." The little sorcerer shudders as he tries to maintain control of his voice and mannerisms, "We were doing what you asked, and there was this bear skin rug. It came to life and we tried everything we could. Thorny struck some blows, I tried with my magic, Val, Eli..." The look on Liam's face slowly changes from despair to anger as he sets his eyes, continuing the description, "Thorny fell first with a few swipes of those huge claws, then Val, she banged it a few times with the mace, but then she was crushed and tossed aside. Eli kept plugging arrows into it the whole time; and me, my spells were almost nothing to it. Eli saw I was trapped with the bear between me and the door, she yelled for me to run out as she put the bow away and came in to slash at it with her sword."

Liam stopped to catch his breath as the enormity of the whole experience catches up with him again so soon after it occurred.

"She... she saved me. That bear, between all the hits and blood and fur everywhere, it was pretty clear the bear was not going to last long, but she went in against it anyway so I could get out... to distract it from going after me. And it killed her."

"In my experience," says Bassy, "when you go looking for trouble it nearly always finds you. You could check with Caspar Tymek over at the general store. He hears most of the news coming through. He might have something. There was quite a stir over the Witch Tower and the kobolds at the quarry, but I'm afraid a band of adventurers is handling that already. I don't know. Perhaps they'll need some more muscle and you can find them. They come here most evenings. I imagine they'll be along tonight or tomorrow with a story on their lips and gold in their pockets. Stick around and talk to them."

Meanwhile, Liam goes running by the inn outside and doesn't stop until he's panting and bleeding in Lady Origena's front hall, much to the consternation of her butler.

Sir Arnholde looks on with disgust. "And you chose to come straight here? Stinking of sweat and covered in blood? The decent thing to do would have been to get cleaned up first, unless you expect my mother to follow you back in with a sword!"

Lady Origena is horrified, but speaks carefully. "He's in shock, Arnholde. He's just seen his friends killed. Urqhart, get him a brandy. Arnholde, a chair."

The elderly baroness looks like she might kneel down to be on eye level with Liam, but reconsiders and merely looks down at him. "Young man, it is never well to see one's friends die, whether they die in bed or in battle. I have never seen the latter but I have seen far too much of the former. You listen to me. Two things will eat at you now, if you let them: fear and guilt."

"As to the first, no man alive will blame you if you simply choose to move on. You have been well paid up to now and I've no doubt you could live quite well on what I've paid you already. But as to the second, guilt is by far the worse of the two. You will wonder why you survived and they did not. It will consume you if you let it. So you remember this tonight when are alone with your thoughts: there is no why. There is only the fact that you are still alive. Your life is still your own and whether you live it well or poorly is still your own to determine."

"Your friends' bodies will be recovered and given a proper burial. They were heroes and they will be treated as such. Now as for you, you will spend the night here." She stares at Arnholde, daring him to say something. He closes his mouth and glares at Liam. "Urhart will draw you a bath and you will stay in one of the guest rooms. In the morning we will talk again and decide what must be done."

She turns to go, turning back at the door. "And Master Liam? I'm sorry to hear about your friends."

Liam ponders her words a little more, looks off into nothing and whispers, "I know why they died and I didn't."

Liam shakes his head, blinking a few times, "Ma'am, if it pleases, after cleaning up; well, Val was the longest-lived resident of Belhaim among our group, and Xemne deserves to know firsthand what has happened and how."

"You are a guest, Mister Liam. If you don't think the news can wait until the morning, you may go as soon as you choose. Good night. Still, come and see me for breakfast. I want to talk to you when you've reste. And do get some sleep."

Taking his leave of Lady Devy's estate after a bath, Liam heads into town proper and stops by Xemne's shop, describing with sincerity and heartbreak what occurred at Hunclay's manor.

"I did not know Val well enough to know of any family, if you know of any, please send word to them of her courage and fate."

After a proper amount of time, Liam takes his leave and heads to the Wise Piper. Grown by his experiences, Liam sets his jaw and demeanor to project a far more serious tone than others are used to seeing with him.

He bangs his morningstar against the doorway upon entering to get everyone's attention, then stows it away. "It is with heavy heart I tell the news. My companions have breathed their last this day." Liam waits a few beats for the news to sink, "There will be a time to give a full accounting of their bravery and deeds, but that is not now. We set out on what we thought would be an innocent enough job on behalf of Belhaim, forewarned of the potential for traps and danger, but it proved too much on this first go. I aim to finish the job, but cannot do it alone."

Liam looks over the crowd, seeing new faces, but his look does not linger, "I will stay here two hours, if any want to join me, we can talk and in the morning we will present ourselves to Lady Devy for her approval, but I have neither time nor patience for tale-seekers. As I said, there will be a time and place for that account."

Liam takes a seat at a table, patiently waiting for service, determined to keep an open mind for who in Belhaim may present themselves.

Ceasing for a moment the obnoxious licking of his fingers while the little halfling tells his tale, Edo resumes upon the conclusion. He grabs his gear and strides over to Liam's table, arriving just as the dwarf the next table over makes his offer.

"I'll help yeh too. I've about eaten what's left of me coin and a house fulla traps sounds about as fun as..," he pauses, remembering the tale he just heard not 5 seconds earlier. "Eh, rather, it sounds like just m'kinda job." He raises his mug toward the dwarf, acknowledging that they have just become cohorts.

"Oiya, love! He calls to Talia. "A round for me mates," his voice turning solemn, "...and in memory of those recently fallen." Having eavesdropped on the entire conversation with Bessy, Edo is sure the elf in the corner will be joining them and ensures she has another drink, as well.

Jayla grabs heads over to the halfling's table, and sit at an empty seat she grabs one of the drinks, and slides another in front of the hafling. "Traps and danger? That sounds like my kind of job. I'm sorry for your loss. It's never easy losing friends and companions. Especially when you are on a job. That can be messy." she looks as if she's remembering something sad.

Liam looks around the table, all strangers he thinks to himself. No locals willing to take up the cause. Kinda says something.

Liam rtaises the mug, drains it, and wipes his mouth with his sleeve. ”Let’s go to a room first,” Liam whispers this last part, ”I don’t want to panic anyone.” Once behind closed doors…

My name is Liam Hoffsteens. I ain’t so hot with the morningstar here, but I can wield some magic… Liam continues with a small intro to who he is, where he worked, and tells them what he knew of Throny, Eli and Val and how the group came together to investigate the tower falling. He then asks all for a quick intro to whom each of them are. Once introductions are over, he continues…

Liam gives an overview of the tunnels, Hunclay’s death, the imp, and the kobold encounters leading into the abandoned mine, spotlighting the monsters, puzzles and traps encountered, and the knowledge that Hunclay hired the kobolds, but Liam’s own opinion that it sounded fishy, as the tower only blocked a very small portion of the sky from his view. He is very open and answers all questions honestly, even when they put him in a bad light.

Liam then talks about the manor itself, Hunclay’s astronomical interests, bringing out the journal and pointing out the living servant that was found and what occurred with him, all the places where traps were discovered, going into detail about the bearskin rug and how the battle played out, then quietly stows the journal.

”Lady Devy tasked us with cataloging Hunclay’s manor for auction, and I was all-in for the task, but looking back now, I think maybe I was too enamored with the wonder of what was within the manor and jotting down the inventory when that should be saved for after the place was made 100% safe. I do not blame myself for my friends demise, I did nothing personally wrong, but moving forward, I think I need to be more serious about my… input. This is dangerous business.”

"Bah! Wizard traps and trickery! But it sounds like there is some coin to be had, and who knows how many stories this wizard may have collected. I will help you, little Liam. "
