Still hoping to find some form of healing magic the bard maintains her Detect Magic spell as she goes through the ground floor of the lodge. After checking out the great hall and final bedroom she goes back to scan the kitchen and the other bedrooms. Anything? she asks the group. Ready to go up?

Frosty, are the doors that are "barred from the inside" the ones just east of Blaze leading back outside? Also, did we stabilize the half-orc woman or has she possibly stabilized on her own?

Blaze shrugs, frustrated at not having found any sign of the noblewoman. She makes ready to join Freyja in searching the upstairs.

"Going up is not only option," Arvanya explains as she kicks aside the bearskin rug to reveal a trapdoor in the floor.

"Huh? Wonder what's down there. Kneeling down, Evelina tugs on the lock a few times. "Not sure how we'd get down there though. Seems like they got it locked up real good." Looking up at the others and giving them a shrug, she suggests, "Maybe the key's upstairs?"

Blaze ponders the trap door. "It could be where they put the Lady... or it might have something to do with why they were all sick. I agree we should head upstairss, we can look for the key or something to break the lock with." She then begins creeping up the stairs, trying to be as quiet as possible.

As Arvanya whips the bearskin rug aside, Astrid nods in approval at her discovery. If I had a person to hide, a secret basement is where I would put them...but you are right. Leaving others behind to descend upon us from above seems a less-than-pleasant idea, and doors become much easier to open with their keys. Astrid begins to move upstairs as well, going carefully and listening for any more noises. Maybe it was simply the building settling...but I take no chances.

@Blaze: Yes, the barred doors are those who lead outside. I don't recall any of you doing anything to stabilize any of the attackers, so unless any of you go out there to find it out, there is no way for you to know right now.

Leaded by Freyja, you climb up the stairs to find an unlocked door. An L-shaped table with many chairs takes up most of the floor space in this loft. A second smaller table sits near the entrance, and several windows look over the snowy grounds of the lodge. In the southwest corner, a large map hangs on the wall, opposite another door in the northeast wall.

Two human skeletons stand in the room, surrounded by a freezing aura. As soon as the door is opened, the undead creatures moves towards Freyja, slashing her with their claws... With her chest teared open, Freyja falls into the ground unconscious.

Yikes!

I'd forgotten her wounds were so great... But there would be time for regret later - now, there was a job to be done. Bull-rushing past the others to stand over the still form of her fallen comrade, Astrid snarls at the skeletons, praying to draw their attention. Her clawed hand lashes forward, as she attempts to put enough force into the swing to smash the bones to bits.

Point of note: claws inflict slashing and bludgeoning damage. Not that Astrid knows much about damage reduction. ;)

Evelina stares in horror as Freyja is mauled by the skeletons. Seeing the woman, who always seemed to Evelina to be so steady and certain, get taken down so quickly shakes her to the core. Evelina runs towards the bard, worrying that the lurching skeletons will strike her again.

However, in the moment of panic, her rapier lands wide of the creatures head. "Damnit!" she exclaims rather loudly. Focus! For once in your life! Taking a few deep breaths, Evelina stands in a defensive position waiting for the skeletons to strike.

Arvanya gasps as the undead horrors leer and lurch forward from the bedroom. Her first impulse is to help Freyja, but the skeletons close in too quickly. Besides, she knows her glaive is too cumbersome to use in such a tight space. Thankfully Astrid rushes between them and tears into the monstrosity. Arvanya instead stumbles back down the staircase, both to give room to her friends and to prepare to defend herself should the skeletons break through. On the way down, she raises a hand and beckons Freyja back to the living. Casting stabilize on Freyja.

I don't think there is anything I can do from this position... Frosty, can you give us some options for moving Freyja out of harm's way? Maybe a Drag vs a helpless opponent? We need to get back off the stairs and force the skele's into the bottleneck to come after us.

With a quick gesture, Arvanya stabilizes Freyja. Meanwhile, Evelina vaults above her fallen companion and preparing herself to attack the skeletons... in a moment of excitation, Evelina almost trips in Freya's arm and misses the frost skeleton entirely. With the skeletons distracted, Blaze is able to grab Freyja by her feet and drag her away from the danger while Astrid crushed the skeleton's skull, even if it had cover against her.

The skeleton's bones shake for a moment and, in a blink of an eye explode, explode, sending bits of frost bone towards Astrid and Evelina. Protected by the door, Astrid is able to dodge it but Evelina is fully hit by them, almost falling into the first floor! The second skeleton moves quickly to take his companion's place and attacks Evelina with a perfect blow... not sure if by pure luck or an unknown reflex, Evelina changes the direction of the blow, making the claw hit wood instead while sending her rapier through the skeleton's hollow eye socked, removing his skull. When the skeleton started to shiver, Evelina quickly kicked it back inside the room, minimizing the damage to herself but, even so, the girl slowly falls unconscious into the ground.

Having seen Freyja get struck down so brutally, Evelina reacts on instinct when the skeleton moves to strike her. Adrenaline causing a burst of speed and focus, she doesn't realize what she has done until her rapier is through the creatures skull. All she manages to gets out is "Oh n...." before she gets sent and a sickening crack is heard as she slams into the wall and then slumps to the ground. Evelina gets only a few seconds of rest before hearing her name shouted brings everything back into focus and her eyes slowly flutter open. For a moment Evelina just lies there, lacking the will power to move or even speak to let her friends know she is awake. However, as she listens to the swarm of voices, her ear catches one voice that sounds distant and unfamiliar. Finally she attempts to speak, but it comes out as little more than a whimper. "Smmeh...Uhgsd..." Breathing in a slow, painful breath she tries again, managing to get out the words, "Someone's outside..."

Despite the protests of just about every muscle and bone in her body, Evelina reaches for her rapier, turns so that she is on all fours and attempts to push herself up off the ground, using the nearby wall for support.

Blaze is glad to see Evelina on her feet. "Astrid, can you carry Freyja?" She asks, knowing she cannot hope to do it herself.

Ok, seriously, what the heck do we do? We can't just run for it since Auryel is in the bushes out front... Presumably where someone is waiting for us. Blaze can try and sneak out and surprise them, while everyone else scrambles?

Wordlessly, Astrid reaches behind and offers Evelina a thick, gnarled hand, careful to keep her heavy nails from digging into the smaller girl's skin as she hauls her to her feet, careful to avoid jarring her too hard and injuring her further. Then she shoulders her way past Blaze and Arvanya to where Freyja lies still, kneeling down and placing a hand on the woman's forehead. With rough Ulfen syllables, she begins to intone a chant of power and victory, feeling her war-god's blessing pass from her into the shieldmaiden. Astrid had intended the energy to be used on a prayer for power, divine favor in battle...but keeping her ally in the fight was more important, and some measure of Gorum's blessings of prowess still remained to her.

Converting divine power into a cure light wounds spell. Cure light wounds on Freyja: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

As Freyja drifts back into consciousness, Astrid hauls herself up from the floor, cocking her head to catch the voice Evelina had mentioned. With the noise being pointed out, I'm assuming I can take 10 on Perception for 17 to catch it. With a long sigh, she turns back. Evelina is too injured - she would prove a liability in a fight. Freyja too, perhaps, even with my Lord's blessing. But I will not run. I swore an oath to find the Lady, to protect her...and all of you. At the last words, almost too quiet to hear behind the roughness of her timbre, her hard-set jaw softens slightly. Blaze, Arvanya, if Freyja cannot walk you will have to carry her between you. Search the room for anything that will help to mend hurts, then get out and get to safety.

Drawing her greatsword almost prayerfully, she runs a hand down its length, murmuring too softly to hear for a moment before she speaks out again. I will go face this challenger, if challenger they be.

That's my proposition - Astrid goes out and confronts/distracts the newcomer while everyone else makes like a tree and leaves. It's perfectly ok to shoot down this plan, but heroic last stand is right up Astrid's alley if you're cool with it. ;)

As Evelina continues to struggle to get to her feet, she gratefully accepts assistance. However, with one simple word Astrid wounds her more than any of her other injuries. One word that she had heard so many times. Liability. Eyes filling with water and voice shaking, she replies, "No...please...I'm okay...I can...I can still fight...I..." Shaking her head stubbornly, she continues, "No! I'm not gonna run an' leave you all behind! I won't do it! I won't. I WONT!"

However, as Evelina turns to follow Astrid, her childish temper tantrum is interrupted by their new visitors. Reaching for her rapier, pain everywhere is harsh reminder that Astrid probably had a point. Hobbling forward, Evelina only makes it about as far as Arvanya.

I totally didn't remember about the potion. With everything I've had on my plate lately, I'm lucky I remember my IRL name half the time. :)

As the corpses begin to rise anew, Astrid lurches forward into the hallway, using the bottleneck of the narrow entryway to keep the attackers at bay. A tiny voice in the back of her mind continues the gibbering it had started when the skeletons rose up and began to tear Freyja apart...but she pushes that voice aside. Panic and fear could come later. I'll hold them here - look in the room, for anything to close wounds...

And then the bottle that Heldren's healer had pressed into her hand flashes to her mind. She'd put it into an outer pocket of her rucksack, to keep it close by when needed, and there it rested still, forgotten in the mad rush of facing the lodge's inhabitants... Evelina! In my bag, right pocket - there's a potion. Grab it and drink it. She leaves retrieving the vial to others...her hands had other issues to take care of. Blaze concentrates and prepare to launch a fire sphere at the enemy but pauses for a second, awaiting for Astrid to swing with her sword.

Astrid waits for the right moment before striking, splitting the zombie diagonally, and soon after, a couple inches above her shoulder, a sphere of fire lands against the zombie standing just in front of the door.

In front of the door, in the middle of the snow, you notice a human appearing from thin air! The has black and unruly hair and fine clothing of blue color, and above it, he wears a big cloak made of white fur. He holds a short sword in one hand and points the other at you, with something in his hand. He whispers a couple words and Astrid stops from returning her sword to a defensive position... soon after the zombies advance. One of them charges at Astrid while the others stumble towards you... Unfortunately, unable to move, Astrid is hit by the zombie's short sword and is also unable to keep the others at bay... Evelina is able to pierce the zombie as he stumbles but her weapon doesn't seem to be so effective against such creatures.

Blaze takes a step back from the Zombie to give herself some breathing room and sends another ball of flame at the same one. Closing her eyes briefly, she sends up a silent prayer. Holy Flame, be with us through this trying time. Help us to be worthy of your light. She gathers power, readying herself for what comes next. The fire in the grate flares up toward her, as she draws the heat from it. "I am ready."

Unfortunately, I can't target the two closest ones with a Fan of Flames yet. Evelina, do you really have 2 hp, or did you forget to update after the potion? They can do 8 damage on a charge, if you are that low, you need to get off the front line. The zombies are going to charge whoever is up front. Plus, to drag, you need to move straight back in the direction you pull, so I think you should be behind Astrid, if you did succeed at moving her.

Reposition: 1d20 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 - 1 = 16

I just didn't update my header. I'm at 8hp and all my non-lethal is gone. So while I could get unlucky, the risk isn't great enough to remove me from the front line. As for Astrid, Drag was probably the wrong word. Reposition is probably better...and with Astrid having an effective str and dex of 0, as well as being wounded, I should be able to move her pretty far with the roll above. Also, if you can't fan of flames on the group, I am probably going to just 5 ft step into Astrid's old position, to keep them funneling in one at a time for now.

Astrid letting any foe pass her without answer of claw or blade is the first sign something's wrong...the fact that she'd let anyone call her a liability without any kind of retort might be a harbinger of Rovagug's escape from the Pit of Gormuz. But silent she remains, even as Evelina drags her backwards, taking up the defensive position Astrid had so emphatically claimed. Only the slight pulsing of a vein in her forehead indicates she's anything but a statue...

...but her mind is significantly less silent. That m*%&$###$~#+ outside, it's got to be! When I get my f%+&ing claws on that piece of s~#+...d~@$&ead's going to wish he'd never been born...

Arvanya moves to the south room and smashes a window giving her a clear line of shot against the human casting spells outside, while Evelina moves Astrid away from the frontlines. Blaze sends another of her fire bolts and the zombie in front of her is completely charred. Freyja draws her sword and empowers it with magic, waiting for an opportunity to engage an opponent.

The spellcaster strikes fear in Evelina's heart and mind, making her abandon any will to fight against him! The zombie in front of her tries to skew her but fails miserably, parried by the frightened girl and even if she manages to strike back, her ineffective weapons causes little harm.

The tic in Astrid's forehead is soon joined by the slight twitch of a long claw, cutting slightly into the leather wrapping her greatsword's hilt...a spasm of her heel, the heavy boot rising slightly from the floorboard...a spasm of her shoulders, sending her blade into a slight dip...

And then, all at once, her wordless bellow tears through the melee as her mind rips its way free of the magics holding her in place. Shaking her head to clear it, she rights her balance from Evelina's hasty dragging and settles into an aggressive stance, her voice an angry clamor - but now not nearly so wordless. Seeing the front door completely blocked, Arvanya knows there's no easy route to regrouping with Auryel. The back door! she thinks, but then realizes there's a better option. Bow in hand, she races into a nearby bedroom, remembering the view it gave of the front door. There, directly in front of her, about forty feet out, is the mage. She slams her armored fist through the windowpane, sending glass shards flying outside into the snow. The noise is loud and will draw attention, she knows, but there's no time for subtlety.

She nocks an arrow and pulls the bowstring back hard, aligning the tip with the man's chest.

"Stele ne ghida," she whispers, releasing the arrow.

Evelina's eyes widen and seem to glaze over. In her mind she sees gruesome image after gruesome image. First, Blaze and Freyja getting torn apart by the zombies' claws. Next, Astrid charging toward the caster and getting engulfed by some dark magic. Finally, the overrun Arvanya, who is cornered and has no where to run. Putting her hands above her head as if trying to block the images out, Evelina shakes and yells, "No! No! No! Make it stop! We have to go! This place is death! This place is death!" As if not in control her own body, she turns and begins fleeing for the back exit, screaming for the others to flee the whole way.

Arvanya is able to get a clear shot at the spellcaster and is even luckier by not hitting the fake image. Meanwhile Evelina runs to the back door but finds it barred. Blaze prepares her flames before stepping forward and bathing all zombies in her flames. Freyja restarts her song and, finally, Astrid is freed from the wicked spell that held her in place.

Angry by Arvanya's arrow, the man moves away from her line of sight... he wasn't able to see who shot him but the broken window was a clear sign about the origin. A wave of profane energy washes over you, rising the hairs of your nape, and healing the undead's wounds. "What are ya waiting? Get inside and kill them all!"

Evelina's mind is wild and confused. While she is beginning to fight off the magic, realizing that her friends are not following and that she has left them in danger, her body doesn't seem to be responding to what her mind wants to do. Instead all it wants to do is flee.

Realizing that the door is barred, causes almost immediate panic. She immediately begins slamming against it, trying to force it open.

However, her conflicted state makes her attempts rather weak. Moving like a trapped animal, she turns away from the door and runs towards the nearest window.

Arvanya ducks her head back into the window frame and spits when she sees that the mage has disappeared. Did he run, or fly, or vanish?

The sounds of his shouting, followed by crashes and groans from the entryway, clue her in to his location. Narrowing her eyes, she estimates the proportions of the window and her own body. Crouching back on into a squat, she springs forward, propelling herself through the opening and landing agilely on her fur-wrapped feet. Mimicking a winter doe, she darts through the snow until the creatures come into view, then fires an arrow at the one standing in the back.

Blaze narrows her yellow tiefling eyes as the zombies not only survive her blast, they completely recover. But then a smile graces her dark lips all the same. Outside was some sort of mage, and whatever his abilities, he would run out of resources eventually. But the Holy Flame that had kindled her heart was not finite. Let him sling his unholy spells. I can outlast him.

She reached out to the elements and gathered power, siphoning the heat from all around her and channeled it into another blast at the undead.

I busted out of the hold person here, Freyja. :)

Seeing Blaze step backward, Astrid rushes in to help fill the void - but not too far in. After all, she'd seen Blaze's bursts of fire firsthand. Instead, she casts her greatsword to the side, pulling free her long spear from where it bounces in loose ties against her back. With the reach the spear afforded, she'd be able to fight the monsters while staying out of Blaze's way...and if they got closer, she always had her hands.

Free action to drop greatsword, move action to pull out longspear, free action to five-foot step to spot A, standard action to attack Z2. If the movement can't be done as a five-foot step because of the wall corner (some rule it that way), then ignore the attack.

Longspear against Z2 - attack, damage: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 151d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Arvanya leaves the protection of the lodge behind so she can make a clear shot at the zombie in the rear... unfortunately her arrow hits on the zombie's armor. Unable to use the rear door, Evelina moves towards the nearest window and is able to open it. On the outside she sees a file of wood for the lodge's fireplace which could be used as a stair to leave the lodge.

Blaze once more scorches all the zombies but her aim isn't pretty accurate, not dealing her intended damage. Freyja, steps forward and finishes the creature with her sword. Astrid awaits, her spear ready to pierce any enemy who comes inside. From the outside you her the spellcaster yelling with the zombies. "There is one of them outside! You, get her!"

Soon after another zombie steps inside the lodge and receives Astrid's spear... she pierces the undead's flesh but since the loss of internal organs are not really a concern for it, it endures her attack... nevertheless, Astrid's attack imbalanced the zombie enough for Freyja to block its attack with her shield, preventing a nasty blow.
