Valen steps into Malthorn's place and attacks the creature viciously with a righteous cry and a well aimed thrust of his blade.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Maximum damage, Valen really wants this thing dead!

"That's alright, Gail. Though the experiences here have been horrific, they've given me insights into my abilities. Watch."

Valen leads the heroes to some stone steps that lead down a few feet. Directly ahead of Valen are another set of steps going down Blue Arrow and a hallway stretches off to Valen's left Red Arrow

Male Elf Paladin 4 - HP 36/36 - AC 17 - Initiative +3 - Passive Perception 13 - LoH 10/20 - DS 3/3 - SS 1st - 3/3

Can we take that 20 minute rest before setting out further? Hopefully we don't get slaughtered in that time.

"I suppose resting for a moment isn't a bad idea." Valen turns to the others, "A few minutes and then continue down these next set of stairs?"

If we do rest then I will roll a hit die:

And then as Valen says, continue forward down the blue arrow path.

Encounter Map

Sure. 1d20 ⇒ 9

The party rests for a few minutes in the ghastly dining room before moving forward.

Valen heads down the set of steps and finds

A 4-foot-diameter well shaft with a 3-foot-high stone lip descends 30 feet to a water-filled cistern. A wooden bucket hangs from a rope and-pulley mechanism bolted to the crossbeams above the well. Five side rooms look as if they once served as quarters. Each contains a wood-framed bed with a moldy straw mattress and a wooden chest to hold personal belongings. Each chest is secured with a rusty iron padlock

"This should lead back in the direction we entered from," he comments on the only other path leading out of the quarters. "I suggest we go in deeper first and cover that path on our way back."

He joins Malthorn in following Valen, then his lips twich as he realized the pun he unintentionally uttered.

Encounter Map

Gonna push us forward a bit

Valen leads thr group down the set of steps. As it descends the chanting grows louder and more distinct.

The ghostly chant fills this room. You can discern a dozen or so voices saying, over and over, “He is the Ancient. He is the Land.” There are 13 niches carved into the walls at even increments, different items are placed in each niche. Two tunnels lead south. The southernmost tunnel slopes down at a 20-degree angle into murky water and ends at a rusty portcullis

What's in the niches?:

• A small, mummified, yellow hand with sharp claws on a loop of rope
• A knife carved from a human bone
• A dagger with a rat’s skull set into the pommel
• An 8-inch-diameter varnished orb made from a
nothic’s eye
• An aspergillum carved from bone
• A folded cloak made from stitched ghoul skin
• A desiccated frog lashed to a stick
• A bag full of bat guano
• A hag’s severed finger
• A 6-inch-tall wooden figurine of a mummy, its arms
crossed over its chest
• An iron pendant adorned with a devil’s face
• The shrunken, shriveled head of a halfling
• A small wooden coffer containing a dire wolf’s withered
tongue

Map is updated with a new level added.

"The echo in here makes it feel like they could be around any corner." Valen wanders past each of the niches, inspecting the objects inside with his divine senses unmasked. "This place gets more and more pleasant. Inspired decorations really." He will then check both southern paths and attempting to discern which direction the chanting comes from. If he can figure it out he will lead the party that way, if he cannot he will lead them down the non-submerged path.

Yeah this place is huge and it would take weeks to explore pbp style.

In a voice that wasn't fooling anyone Gail attempted nonchalance, "Not even remotely creepy. Look at all this junk, a shrunken skull, a devil pendant, a bone aspergillum. Let me guess that never had holy water in it did it? Mind you if it doesn't have an aura it might be handy. Er Valen, could you er... Actually I'm not sure here is a good place for that really, what with the demonic chanting. Oh you're doing it anyway aren't you...." Brave man, I'm not sure I'd want to see.

She pauses for a moment as the chanting reaches a crescendo before subsiding, "Yeah that chanting is kind of annoying. Anyway maybe some Holy Water isn't such a bad idea. I don't suppose anyone has any powered silver? No? Oh well."

Gail cautiously follows Valen's lead.
