GM Misty's War of the Burning Sky

Character Name: Bonnar Halfelven
Character Race: Half-Elf
Character Class: Oracle (Streets/Lame)
Primary Role: Support/Divine Caster

Character Background:
Bonnar never knew his parents - he's not even sure if Bonnar is his birth name. Abandoned to the streets as a child, he's had to learn to grow up quickly and hard. He's seen his fair share of death, both through poverty and the flash of a blade in the dark.

Despite this, Bonnar is a happy soul - he knows his place in the world, and he's content to live life to the full. A devout follower of (Cayden Cailean/God of Revelry), Bonnar was nonetheless surprised when, after a rather drunken night following a good haul, he was capable of healing his compatriot's leg wound, picked up from a particularly vicious guard. Sadly, all of his efforts to mend his mangled knee, delivered by a thug in the employ of a local crime lord, have failed.

Since then, Bonnar has been in hiding, attempting to avoid those who would use his new gift for their own ends. Even worse, there is news that the Emperor Coaltongue has fallen - could Bonnar's day get any worse?

@fatmanspencer
Thanks!

@Dorian
Not a problem, was a little confused... If you wanted to keep Mehmed as a relation, I can definitely fiddle with some names here and there for Virgil - there are a lot of commanders in the now dead Coaltongue's armies.

@Bonnar
Looks good, do you have any ideas for where you would like to see this character end up?

Kiana Build

I had a few minutes, so I got Kiana up as an actual build. Since you allowed Unchained Monk, I built her using that one instead of the base monk.

Hmmm... how useful will mounts be? I'm thinking of having my tengu be a Samurai. Though... are Ultimate Combat classes not allowed?

Well one of the campaign traits is for mounted characters who were cavalry. So I'd assume a mounted build would work.

There will be opportunities for mounted characters, not quite Kingmaker level of opportunities, but there is a fair amount of travel involved and mounts will come in handy!

"We don't need no stinking mounts... we gots wings."

The winds of change are blowing over the mountains. A storm is coming and there is nothing that Barrack likes more than a good storm.

I would like to submit Barrack Saltstone. He's a character I made for another Burning Sky campaign where the GM disappeared before we finished the first scene. I went ahead and touched him up so he would be more in line with your build rules.

He is a Dwarven Storm Druid with ties to the resistance thanks to the small community of trappers, hunters and mountaineers that call the local mountains home. His attitude towards religion is that the Gods are far away but Spirits are close. He'll constantly be in touch with the spirits and asking their guidance.

Background:
As a young dwarf Barrack was miserable. He had weaker eyes that required more light than other dwarves and suffered terribly from an everlasting depression. What's more is he was sensetive to the voices of long past ancestors. He could hear the influence of spirits, and would often stare off at things others couldn't see. His parents thought him sickly and debated for a long time what to do with him. It was decided that he would stay home where it was safe...and dark. For years he lingered in the dark damp caves of his people always feeling like something was missing...

When he was a mere 20 Barracks great uncle passed away and it was decided Barrack would be allowed to leave the family hold for the first time in his life. This would involve a journey to another dwarven city and a quick passage above ground. This short time above ground changed Barracks life. As soon as he was above ground he felt like he could breathe, not to mention see. The cold crisp air breathed a life into the young dwarf that his family had never seen before. He had never imagined a sight so beautiful as the golden sun floating above silver clouds in an azure blue sky. The wind blowing across his brow was not the smoke laden dank air he had grown up with . It was clear and crisp and spoke of places far away. Barrack knew in that moment that what he desired more than anything was to live outside in the open air.

AS soon as he reached the age of Adulthood Barrack left home never planning on returning. He left for the mountains where the air is clear and crisp, and the only sound in his ears is that of the voices carried on the wind. In time he came to call the mountains outside of Gate Pass home, and occasionally would stop in the city looking to trade... and perhaps make the occasional contact with another human.

When he had heard the news of possible war, from a local trapper, Barrack knew better then to ignore what he heard. The last thing he wanted was entire armies camping in the foot hills and doing who knows what to the wilds in the area. He would be glad to see neither the Ragesians or Shahalesti anywhere near the mountains he calls home.

For this reason the dwarf has left his home in the mountains to come and see how much truth there is to the rumors.

Sorry to hear that your last game fell through Barrack!

Thanks for submitting your character, I'm hoping that this attempt can make it well past the first scene

Do you have plans for how you'd like to see Barrack's story play out?

My personal playstyle has always been more of a storyteller... let the story shape and drive character development instead of forcing the story to fit my given character. But I have a few ideas of where he's going to go...

Socially:
Barrack is pretty gruff guy who has chosen seclusion for himself for a long time... and honestly he's gotten to a point where he wouldn't mind a little company for a change. To me his story is more about what kind of friendships he might make with the other pc's and his inner turmoil about wanting to help and be around other people but still not really wanting to be around people.

Mechanically:
He's learned to rely on his physical sturdiness and will start out as a front liner. As time goes by he'll shift in to a caster role. At some point in the future you can count on him transforming into a sparrow and hiding in a tree while dropping lightning bolts from the sky.

family:
I have no idea what an encounter with anyone from his family would be like. He kind of split the first time he had a chance and hasn't been home since. It's not the most dwarven way of living and it could be an interesting scene to encounter a brother, cousin, or maybe even eventually have to stop off where he grew up. Not sure where the story leads to or what kind of chances for this there could be but it would be a fun encounter to see.

Thank you. I shall endeavor to write it up this weekend.

** spoiler omitted **...

I like the background. Did Barrack take the alternate racial ability Surface Survivalist? ("Some dwarves have dwelt so long above ground they have lost their ability to see at night. However, their adaptation to extreme environments allows them to treat wind conditions (when determining whether or not they are checked or blown away) and either hot or cold climates (choose one) as one step less severe. This racial trait replaces darkvision.")

It seems like it'd fit your character's background, and druidic status quite well.

Concerning deities: you declared that we may write one up that fits our character concept?

Ok. I think that his cover...errr...his backstory is ready.

Is there a promenade family in Gate Pass that has a patriarch that is decent Spellduelist, or employs one?

What works best for the story?

Thanks... I like the character allot and was pretty excited to see another WOTBS game.

I think this was the first character that took optional race traits with and I may have gone a little overboard. I took a bunch of different ones that I felt helped flush out the character including Surface Survivalist, Mountaineer, and Rock stepper.

Dotting in. I'm thinking a member of the cavalry - a Wild Child Brawler - but I still need to read through the player's guide. Odds are good it'll be something completely different by then.

Yeah Misty I imagine this campaign will lead us out into the world and while Sobrian initially leaves to protect his family’s potential future, once he is out and about he will be keeping an ear out for word of a cure and a way to bring it home with him.

Character Name: Urbino Athus
Character Race: Human
Character Class: Cavalier
Primary Role: Frontliner

Background::

Urbino is the third son of a farming family who have been in the area around Gate Pass since times long forgotten. Urbino always loved riding so with no prospect for inheritance he joined the military of Gate Pass. His unusual skill at horsemanship was noted and he was assigned to a cavalry unit.

After a few months he was raised to the rank of Coronet and given a patrol route to lead his men on. He repeatedly petitioned his leaders that more men were needed to regularly patrol the area to check and counter the ambition of bandits. He drilled his men hard and they were well disciplined. However an outlying farm was attacked and all he and his men could do was perform a delaying action to let the farmer and his family evacuate. None died but valuables crops were lost. This farm was owned by a nobleman of some means.

To avoid political fall out one of his superiors placed the blame on the young officer who was only a farmer’s son. Urbino was brought back to Gate Pass in chains to answer for his failure to put an end to the bandits before such a situation could arise. The blame was laid at his feet, painting a picture of him being lax with his duties but he had at least some bit of a reputation already so this cast some doubt on this story.

When Urbino got to go on the record he flatly and factually leveled the blame at his commander, pointing out his regular request for more men so he could more regularly and diligently patrol the area to deal with bandits but had always been refused. This seemed to sway things somewhat but politics would put a spin on it.

As our story begins Urbino waits to hear the result of his trial. Will he be vindicated and reinstated? Given an honourable discharge but forced out the military to brush the situation under the rug? Reassigned? Given a dishonourable discharge? Whatever works best for our tale.

Firstly, an update on applicants:
Ash Dawncourt: Elven Arcanist - Arcane Caster
Kiana Sunbane: Strix Zen Archer Monk - Archer/Scout
Virgil Geryon: Half Orc Inquisitor - Frontliner/Trapfinder
Iorskan: Dragonborn Monk - Frontliner
Beauregarde: Dwarven Alchemist - ??
Sobrian Kommin: Human Rogue - Frontliner
Ferrante Dau'ran: Human Fighter - Frontliner
Feguk: Orc Sorcerer - Support/Melee
Bonar Halfelven: Half Elven Oracle - Support/Divine Caster
Barrack Saltstone: Dwarven Druid - Frontliner/Divine Caster
Urbino Athas: Human Cavalier - Frontliner

@Barrack
Thanks for filling in the details, I can understand your desire to let the story shape the character, but everyone has dreams to aspire to

@Virgil
The gods of the setting are more conceptual than named beings, like the god of Revelry or the god of War, so feel free to worship the god of a concept, rather than the Golarion-specific deities.

@Ash
If you're looking for an influential family to have offended, maybe the Whitmore's? Reagan is the head of the house.

@Whiskey and a Bonesaw
Looking forward to seeing what you put together

@Kevin
Thanks for submitting Urbino, there are some good plot hooks in his backstory!

I notice you got the question marks for Beauregarde for his placement stuff, and I thought I had said he would be a midline/support.

Sorry fatmanspencer, you did answer that question, I just failed to update it properly!

Man, even when you see it on the forums, til someone else acknowledges it happened, is it ever even real?

Character Name Rose
Character Race Tiefling
Character Class Cleric
Primary Role Divine Caster, Frontliner, Support

Rose:

Rose never knew her parents. Her first memories were the orphanage. She survived, liked most orphans do, by playing to her strengths. She was fairly pretty and had her share of boyfriends but one boy in particular took her heart. She fell in love and despite growing up with no money and no family, life was grand and she was happy, at least for a time.

Unfortunately fate was cruel. Jase, her love, grew ill and slowly succumbed to a disease over almost a year. During that time she watched him lose his strength and energy. He deteriorated slowly at first but in the end he went quick. The emotional turmoil during her formative years served as a triggering event that spurred some of her unknown powers, namely her deathwatch, her ability to see the life energy of creatures, as if it were water in a glass. She watched, holding his hands as his life energy left his body, as he died and his soul departed.

At first she was sad. She cried for days, weeks even, but eventually sadness turned to anger. Anger at the gods for such a hard, miserable life. Was she destined for pain her whole life? Eventually the pain lessened and became bearable, but she had grown up in that last year significantly, changed into the woman she would be. Strong with a big heart, but disciplined and cautious. It was likely she would never love another so fully.

This also gave her more drive and dedication to the church. So she packed what little possessions she had, including Jase's holy symbol and set off. Her time at the orphanage was nearing its end and her time with the church was really just beginning, but both in Jase's and her god’s names she would set out to do something of great importance, even if she didn't yet know what that was. And so it was she found herself at Gate Pass, looking for a cause, a dedication worthy of her life.

Rose does not know she is a tiefling. She feels that she was either blessed, or at times cursed, by her god with her "death sight". Her god would have many similarities to Shelyn, pathfinder goddess of beauty and art and possibly some influence from Adabar for cities and civilization.

Her Campaign trait would probably be Thieves’ Guild Sympathizer as a tie in to Jase, mentioned above.

@The Many-Faced GM

Thanks for submitting Rose, I can definitely work with a god of beauty/art/civilisation

From what you've said, I assume that there aren't really any distinguishing features that could hint at Rose being a Teifling at first sight?

Character Name: Abunan Colmacom
Character Race: Halfling
Character Class: Oracle
Primary Role: Social/Divine Caster

Background:

Character Background: Abunan views himself as a master diplomat. He was a frequent visitor to the temples of Gate Pass in his youth, and he he spent much time in discussion with priests of both smaller and bigger temples, always managing to charm his way through their differing beliefs. He is a worshiper of all the gods, and they all grant him a small measure of their power.

He views the temples as the most important venue of diplomacy - between the various gods - but he also tries to resolve the differences between the different factions of the city, and of course, he has ambitions to mediate between the two empires that surround his city. He is always eager to form alliances, with both gods and mortals.

Plans for the character mechanically: Abunan will take the Spirit Guide archetype at level 3, which allows him to form temporary bonds like a shaman, representing the many gods with whom he forms alliances. Abunan would most likely take the time mystery, though this could be flexible (considering the backstory). He would probably be built for ranged combat.

Plans for the character’s own story: Abunan would like to be able to aid in the effort to make peace and avoid a war. In addition, he would like to visit the temples of other locations and learn their viewpoints on the diplomatic tensions and other matters. One day he would like to learn more about the four elemental spirits that he knows about from the famous myths.

That's correct. Mechanically she would most likely have the Pass for Human alternate racial trait eliminating most of the physical indicators.

Misty,

I was thinking about your Deity-creation offer, and came up with something. I don't have my cleric done yet, but thought I would throw this out first, which I made for my character to worship:

My Deity Idea:

Deity: Thorn
Titles: The Cleansing Fire, God of the Forest
Alignment: Chaotic good
Portfolio Destruction, Renewal, Change, Repentance

Cleric Alignments
NG, CG, CN

Domains: Chaos, Plants, Fire, Strength (Self-Realization), Destruction (Catastrophe), Good (Redemption)
Favored Weapon: Bows (He wields a Thorn Bow (this one, not url=http://www.d20pfsrd.com/equipment/weapons/weapon-descriptions/thorn-bow /]this[/url] one)

Thorn is basically the God of Forests, and Forest Fires, which are devastating, but which fertilize and feed the new growth of the forest and spark renewal. He represents change and growth, but also cleansing and destruction, and fights against corruption and stagnation. Things that have life should be always changing and improving, giving way to new life. There is room for trees that live for hundreds of years, but also for trees that die, and destruction and change are part of the cycle of life.

Anyway, I haven't really given a lot of thought to how he became a god or if he just was one, or what he looks like... I was thinking kind of a plant-man hybrid or something-?

Let me know what you think.

Character Name: Markas Labinor
Character Race: Human
Character Class: Bard
Primary Role: Support/Frontliner

Character Background:
Markas grew up in the city of Gate Pass, the only child of minor rug and basket merchants. He was a happy-go-lucky youth, athletic and well-spoken with plenty of friends. Unfortunately, he was also impetuous and rather irresponsible, although he was good-natured.

As he matured, both Markas and his parents realized that a life as a merchant was not for him, so the young man decided to join the Wayfarers, his natural athleticism and lack of fear making him an excellent acrobat.

After a year or so of traveling with the Wayfarers, Markas found himself back in Gate Pass with the colorful ship. The young man made it a point to meet his parents and catch up on things. His father decided to introduce Markas to members of the Resistance, thinking that the young man's talent could be more productive at home than with traveling entertainers.

After his introduction to the Resistance, Markas quit the Wayfarers, finally having a focus for all his energy that was a worthy cause. Being a well-spoken young man with a gift for gab and a few tricks up his sleeves to boot, the Resistance has put him to work soothing the anxieties of the masses, making sure that the people stay steadfast in their desire for independence in the midst of their powerful neighbors.

Plans for the character mechanically:
I'm planning to level up fully in bard, but I'm willing to multiclass into something else to ensure any party holes are filled sufficiently.

Plans for the character’s own story:
Markas is now an avid supporter of the Resistance, and is fully committed to making sure Gate Pass remains a free City-State. I plan on playing Markas as a daredevil who is willing to take risks to make greater headway or gain future rewards down the road. Would like to see him encounter some 'gain for the many at the expense of the few' situations to see how he handles it.

Basic Stats already figured:

St 14 De 16 Co 12 In 13 Wi 10 Ch 16

Traits - Blade of the Resistance
Talented (Perform Dance)

Feats - Alertness
Extra Performance

Given the amount of interest and the fact that my idea's not really coming together in my head, I'll go ahead and say I'm not going to submit a character.

Another update on applicants:
Ash Dawncourt: Elven Arcanist - Arcane Caster
Kiana Sunbane: Strix Zen Archer Monk - Archer/Scout
Virgil Geryon: Half Orc Inquisitor - Frontliner/Trapfinder
Iorskan: Dragonborn Monk - Frontliner
Beauregarde: Dwarven Alchemist - Midline/Support
Sobrian Kommin: Human Rogue - Frontliner
Ferrante Dau'ran: Human Fighter - Frontliner
Feguk: Orc Sorcerer - Support/Melee
Bonar Halfelven: Half Elven Oracle - Support/Divine Caster
Barrack Saltstone: Dwarven Druid - Frontliner/Divine Caster
Urbino Athas: Human Cavalier - Frontliner
Rose: Tiefling Cleric - Divine Caster/Frontliner/Support
Abunan Colmacom: Halfling Oracle - Social/Divine Caster
Markus Labinor: Human Bard - Support/Frontliner

@Abunan Colmacom
I like the approach you are taking with the Spirit Guide Archetype. There is definitely plenty of travel ahead, so Abunan would have plenty of opportunities to interact with the faithful across the lands.

@Zanbabe
Thorne definitely works as a deity. One of the main drivers of divinity is faith if you are looking for a potential ascension for Thorne.

@C B 830
Thanks for submitting Markus, C B, he looks like he has hero potential!

I assume you don't need anything else from Kiana?

There's nothing off the top of my head, thanks Kiana.

Really pleased with the impressive applications put forward by everyone so far. It's going to be very difficult to narrow it down to 6!

Okay, here is Zanbabe's submission. (This is the Alias I am using but I am still working on a few things. It is copied over from another of my characters, and although I have updated a lot of it, I haven't redone the skills yet, or finished the spells.)

I do have the things you asked for, and will finish the rest soon.

Submission Questions:

Character Name: Jezell

Character Race: Aasimar (reason is in the background, but basically it makes her think that she is different and has a calling in life, which is why she chose to dedicate her life to Thorn.)

Character Class: Angelfire Apostle Cleric with Plant (Decay) and Fire (Ash) Domains. (Worships the Deity I previously submitted.)

Primary Role: Support/Divine Caster/Ranged Damage

Character Background: Jezell was born an Aasimar to elven parents, and although her childhood was fairly normal, she always knew she was just a little bit different, although luckily her elven peers often looked upon her stark white hair and glowing eyes when she was experiencing extreme emotion as exotic and cool rather than with disdain. Her mother, a devotee of Thorn, told her that she must have been chosen for a special purpose, and over time that became deeply ingrained into Jezell's idea of herself. She was chosen. She had to do something meaningful with her life, but she wasn't sure what... and although she has tried to figure it out, she honestly still doesn't know for sure.

After graduating from school, she decided to devote herself to temple work, and gave herself to Thorn's service. She practices every day with the longbow, and learned how to perform divine magic in Thorn's service from the teachers at the temple.

The thing that she likes best about Thorn is the idea of clearing away the bad so that the good can grow. She knows she should be more dedicated to encouraging good and growth, but she studies much harder and pays more attention when she is learning lessons about cleansing corruption, and burning away the evil in the hearts of all of us. She thinks maybe this is her purpose. She might be a little bit over judgmental and fanatic at times, but she's young, and still learning who she is and what she is meant to be.

Plans for the character mechanically: I don't plan on any changes as I level--just straight Cleric (unless Thorn specifically calls me to do something else... that's open for DM tweaking).

Plans for the character’s own story: Jezell wants a purpose in life. Being a cleric is cool and all, but she still wants something more personal to her... what is *she* individually supposed to do? Why was she born an Aasimar instead of an elf? Are there reasons for these things? She might find that meaning as she grows in helping people, or in cleansing some particular evil. That's overall, long term. Right now she just wants enough money to buy a composite longbow. :) She might also want to meet other Aasimars, although she will expect them to be as righteous and devoted as she is (or thinks she is), so it might be a disappointment for her. .... A romantic relationship is also something she would be open to, although she's picky and might worry that it would distract from her devotion to Thorn. ... As far as plot hooks go, you can always pull her chain by telling her there is some corruption to cleanse. :)

I made some finishing touches on his crunch. I am thinking between the 2 archtypes, that you see what his purpose will start out to be.

Looks like the applications are slowing down now.

Current applicant list is as follows:
Ash Dawncourt: Elven Arcanist - Arcane Caster
Kiana Sunbane: Strix Zen Archer Monk - Archer/Scout
Virgil Geryon: Half Orc Inquisitor - Frontliner/Trapfinder
Iorskan: Dragonborn Monk - Frontliner
Beauregarde: Dwarven Alchemist - Midline/Support
Sobrian Kommin: Human Rogue - Frontliner
Ferrante Dau'ran: Human Fighter - Frontliner
Feguk: Orc Sorcerer - Support/Melee
Bonar Halfelven: Half Elven Oracle - Support/Divine Caster
Barrack Saltstone: Dwarven Druid - Frontliner/Divine Caster
Urbino Athas: Human Cavalier - Frontliner
Rose: Tiefling Cleric - Divine Caster/Frontliner/Support
Abunan Colmacom: Halfling Oracle - Social/Divine Caster
Markus Labinor: Human Bard - Support/Frontliner/Social
Jezell: Aasimar Cleric - Support/Divine Caster/Ranged Damage

With the recruitment already scheduled to finish in two days, I will keep recruitment open, but I am starting to make decisions on the party make up.

Thanks for all the applications guys, making it really tough on me.

Response if Kiana is chosen:

Well, it was a tough choice, but you obviously persevered and had the wisdom to choose wisely.

Response if Kiana is not chosen:

Well, it's quite obvious you didn't get enough sleep and chose poorly.

:)

Not doing our jobs if it's too easy...lol.

Jezell is completely updated I think. Let me know if you see anything wrong, or need/want any tweaks. :)

Hi all,

I would like to thank each and every one of you who applied, the quality of submissions was very high which made selecting a party of six incredibly difficult.

I have selected the following characters based on both the stories that I can see developing from what they have provided and also based on the way I see them coming together as a party.

Without further ado, I would like to welcome the following to my War of the Burning Sky campaign:
Ash Dawncourt
Kiana Sunbane
Beauregarde
Sobrian Kommin
Barrack Saltstone
Rose

Thanks you again to everyone who applied, I truly hope your characters can find their path to glory in another campaign!

Thanks for the pick!

You chose wisely!
