Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

On the advice of various people in the YouTube videos I watched before getting PACG, I downloaded and am using the character sheets provided by Paizo. In anticipation of getting the Class Decks as they become available in my area, I DL'ed those sheets as well. In looking through them, I see each deck included 3 new characters, plus the one from the base set, although modified (skills, powers, roles, etc.).

I'll assume the changes were made as a result of tweaking based on player feedback and such. Examining the originals and the reboots, I find some of the changes intriguing. Like giving Harsk the Valeros-like ability to recharge discarded weapons, even if they are just ones with the Ranged trait.

My question is: Is there any protocol (official or un-) to switching in-use base set characters to their new twins?

The changes aren't because of anything wrong with the characters published in the base set, they are just to give different versions of the characters.

You'll find 3 different Valeros characters, one in Rise of the Runelords, one in Skull and Shackles, and one in the Class Decks. (Even though Skull and Shackles and the Clas Decks are coming out at the same time.) It is just so that when people buy RotR, S&S, and a Fighter Class Deck they don't say "Hey, I already have Valeros exactly like that." It gives you variety.

The same is true of RotR Harsk and CD Harsk. CD Harsk is not an update to RotR Harsk, he's just a different character. (And you'll notice RotR Harsk has the power to recharge discarded Ranged weapons on his Sniper role.)

I don't think anyone has mentioned anything before about switching from one to the other. I suppose it would depend on how far along you are.

I built 6 character decks at the start (Valeros, Merisiel, Harsk, Kyra, Seoni, and Sajan). After a couple of false starts (call them mulligans) I soloed each through Perils of the Lost Coast and then began using them in duos (Valeros/Seoni, Harsk/Merisiel, Kyra/Sajan) in Burnt Offerings. None of the pairs has completed it yet, so none of the characters is that far along (although I did free up enough basic cards to start Lini and Lem, just to see how they fare teamed together in PotLC). I kind of like the idea of switching most (or all) of the ones I can with their CD counterparts.

So, if you are only in Burnt Offerings, I'd just swap them, check off the appropriate number of feats, use as many cards from their decks as you can, and fill in the missing cards with cards that have the Basic trait. You are talking about, at the most, 2 skill feats and 1 power feat. So it won't be a huge change.

btw, pretty sure his twin's name is Daryl. ;-)

Besides what Hawkmoon was saying that the iconic characters in the Class Decks aren't tweaks of the originals, the original iconics in RotR were designed for that set. If you look at the characters in S&S, you'll find that they are designed for that set (the use of Swashbuckling trait and Aquatic trait, etc.). The Class Deck characters are designed to work with any set, past, present and future. They're designed to be set independent. So changes you see to the iconic characters in them are more of a rounding out of changes to better suit them to do so.
