Curse of the Crimson Throne | Loot

The Goblinblood Wars that ravaged Isger more than a decade ago didn't just set fire to villages; it destroyed families. Among these was the wealthy Irrica family, all but one who perished during this tumultuous time. Now that Isger's government has begun declassifying reports, the Pathfinder Society has learned that the Irricas commanded some supernatural force that convinced even the mighty House Thrune to give them space. With these leads now public knowledge, the Society sends the PCs to piece together the broken family's history and recover this secret weapon before it falls into the wrong hands.

Fallen Family, Broken Name includes five 1-hour adventures that take the PCs across Isger to uncover the Goblinblood Wars' forgotten events and a family's tragic past. The series includes a beginning adventure and a finale, but players can experience the other parts in any order.

Curse of the Crimson Throne | Loot

Our story begins in Almas (pronounced AHL-mehs), the capital of the free nation of Andoran, and one of the largest and most influential cities on the Inner Sea.

Sun streams through the stained glass windows in the old Cathedral of Aroden, now serving as the Almas Lodge of the Pathfinder Society. Venture-Captain Brackett’s ornate desk is covered in neatly stacked bundles of documents.

"I need you to investigate the Irrica family of central Isger," Brackett begins without looking up. "The Eagle Knights have finally released their documents from the early days of the Goblinblood Wars, when they fought alongside Hellknights and Druman mercenaries to contain the goblin invasion up north."

He nods curtly at a young man across the room, who wears the golden epaulets of an Eagle Knight. "Captain Bascomb?"

The officer steps forward smartly. "The Irricas were supporters of House Thrune during the Chelish Civil War. After the Thrune family came to power, the Irricas stood up to a Thrune official’s extortion attempts. The Thrune agent apparently disappeared, and rumor was that the Irricas killed him using some sort of supernatural aid. The Irricas were not punished for their transgression; on the contrary, the family received several lucrative contracts from House Thrune and became quite influential regionally."

Brackett’s eyes narrow. "Anything that could scare House Thrune into inaction is not something we want left lying around. Go to the Irricas’ summer estate and find out what sort of supernatural aid the Irricas had. Be here and ready to leave before dawn tomorrow."

"Do you have any questions, Pathfinders?"

The nagaji speaks in little spurts, words running over each other and then hitting awkward pauses.

Turning to the other Pathfinders, Shikaree offers a closed-mouth smile and says, "And a question for the agents-- that is, my fellow agents! My fellow pathfinders, yes. Serge regards Captain Bascomb for a long while, his eyes focused on the regalia.

A noble and righteous group. Fighting against slavery and those who profit from it. Even if it meant fighting alongside the Hellknights of Cheliax...

He breaks away his long stare with a sigh. "Captain Bascomb, it is an honor. And to you, Venture-Captain," he bows. "What is known of the Irricas now? Are there any indications or rumors as to what these... supernatural aids may have been?" He brings his hand to his chin in concern.

Then, he spins on a foot and turns to Shikaree excitedly. "A practice sparring session sounds like the perfect way to prepare ourselves for our journey."

"Excellent questions. Here's what we know."

Venture-Captain Brackett unfurls a map on his desk, weighting it down with a dagger and a blackpowder pistol.

"We know that the Irrica family became influential merchants about the time that House Thrune came to power, but they were wiped out during the first goblin attacks of the war. Their summer estate is on the Conerica River, on the way to Elidir where I’m heading. We’ll travel together until we reach the estate."

"The Thrune official who was the Irricas’ liaison was Vegoran Thrune, a distant cousin of the queen and a callous brute who abused his authority for personal gain. As the story goes, the family put up with it for a year or so… then, Vegoran suddenly disappeared That’s when rumors of the Irricas' 'supernatural aid' began."

"Travel to the Irrica estate from Almas takes 14 days by horse," the venture-captain informs you. "The Almas Lodge will provide basic provisions, and I can lend you horses, if you don't have mounts. They're excellent light horses. We've plenty of serviceable riding riding kit, but the horses aren't combat-trained."

Brackett concludes the briefing. "I've a few other matters to take care of before I leave. I'll see you tomorrow morning at sunrise."

Blushing at "Bash" Steeltoe's brazen pick-up line, Captain Bascomb pulls the dwarf into a broom closet in the hall outside the venture-captain's office.

Between panting breaths and unprintable sweet-nothings, the Eagle Knight confides what he knows about the Irrica family.

"The Irricas were an influential Isgeri family allied with House Thrune of Cheliax. They were based out of Elidir but often traveled the countryside in their dealings as merchants.

He loosens the collar of his starched uniform.

"The Irrica family had a summer home on the south shore of the Conerica River, where they conducted business and entertained guests from across Isger and Cheliax. The last of them died defending this estate, which was more exposed to goblin attacks than their other holdings."

Cut to Scene:

A large fountain in the center of the Lodge's cobblestone courtyard rises six feet into the air, cooling the sultry summer breeze.

The rest of you might know something about the Irrica family, too. You might also use the time available to learn more about them.

Rutillo Irrica’s will was filed in Elidir in 4680 ar, but few of the people named in it survived the Goblinblood Wars, and no more recent will has been found. Other than a few personal items, none of the Irrica estate has been distributed.

While Bash disappears into a hallway with the Eagle Knight, Serge blushes brightly and slips out of the office to spend some time walking the streets of Almas. He asks around for answers about the Irrica family, but the citizens don't take too kindly to a paladin with stained armor.

After taking a few minutes at the town fountain to scrub himself clean, he returns. "Torgrin, er, sir, I would gladly place you in my backpack if you require a.. mount."

He is... Made of liquid?

"Shikaree, I was serious about my request. Come now, let's learn how we may help each other." When he's ready, Serge leads the nagaji and whoever else will join to a small yard near the office. "There is not much complexity to my way of defending my friends. This sword, blessed by Ragathiel, assists me in all the ways I may need," he hefts his large, two-handed greatsword up carefully and strikes the ground with it firmly. He smiles, swinging the weapon back across his back and dusts off his hands. "What of yourselves?"

Curse of the Crimson Throne | Loot

Hailing from Isger, Mokoa is steeped in the region's history.

For more than two millennia, Isger has served as a vassal state, first to Taldor and later to Cheliax. Always tugged back and forth as a strategically valuable prize, it was rarely provided the military forces needed to properly defend itself. Tragedy struck about 20 years ago at the outbreak of the Goblinblood Wars. As goblins and hobgoblins attacked settlements all across the region, the steward Hedvend VI ordered his forces to protect the capital and primary trade routes, leaving most outlying towns on their own. Little assistance came directly from Cheliax, so an improbable alliance of Hellknights, Eagle Knights, and Druman Blackjackets joined forces to fend off the goblin menace– but not without cost. By the end of the war several years later, many of the unlikely heroes of Isger had fallen before the goblin hordes, and the fighting had left the countryside devastated and under the control of roving bandits.

Isger’s depleted treasury has never been fully rebuilt, yet several independent operations have stepped in to assist. Most notable are the Sisters of the Golden Erinyes, an outwardly humanitarian branch of the murderous Sisterhood of Eiseth. The Golden Erinyes raises orphans of the Goblinblood Wars to revere Asmodeus, accepting female wards into their militant monastery upon adulthood and directing male adults into the Hellknights or church of Asmodeus. Any Isgeri citizens who might be inclined to protest over the orphans being claimed and indoctrinated by the church of Asmodeus have been ineffective due to Isger’s status as a thrall state of Cheliax and their own precarious circumstances following the Goblinblood Wars.

Mokoa is also intimately familiar with his homeland's geography.

Isger lies between two of the most powerful economies of Avistan: the merchant Kalistocracy of Druma to the north and Cheliax to the south. Isger also controls the only gap between the Five Kings Mountains and the Menador Mountains. As a result, Isger has the Conerica Straits, one of the most profitable trade routes in Avistan, running through the center of it.

There are parts of three separate mountain ranges within Isger: the Five Kings Mountains to the east, the Menador Mountains to the north and west, and the Aspodell Mountains to the south. The open plain between the Aspodell and Five Kings Mountains that connects Isger to Andoran is known as Isger Pass.

Much of the Chitterwood was burnt in the aftermath of the Goblinblood Wars, but it still remains as a geographical feature. Beneath the forest, goblin tribes remain in the Caverns of Chitterwood, perhaps gathering their forces for another invasion.

Although Isger is a landlocked country, it has numerous large and navigable rivers passing through it. These include the Conerica River and the Keld.

Its prominent settlements include Dustpawn, a former mining town; Elidir, the capital, at the heart of the Conerica Straits; Gillamoor, village under quarantine; Haugin's Ear, a fishing town; Logas, a former capital on the edge of the Chitterwood; Saringallow, founded by House Sarini; and Umok, a gnome settlement.

Other places of interest include Citadel Altaerein, former headquarters of the Hellknight Order of the Nail; Citadel Dinyar, headquarters of the Hellknight Order of the Godclaw; Finder's Gulch, a haunted site; Iron Rose, the palace of the Widow Queen; and Wolfpoint, a fort.

Shikaree is thrilled and relieved to have so many fellow agents willing to meet in the practice yard. "I am sso pleased! It's like we are real-- er, really a team with-- much experience together! If you will permit, pleasse, I will ask a little prayer that my noble ancestors back ten generations bless this practice of arms?"

If none object, Shikaree drops sinuously to a kneeling position and begins chanting softly. After several minutes of this, faint wisps of snake-like beings seem barely visible around the najagi, gone if one stares too long directly at them.

Shikaree flashes that fanged smile before quickly shifting to the demure, closed-mouth one. "Ah! The ancestorss blesss our practice. Pathfinder Agent Torgrin, never have I seen weaponry sso-- so-- unique! What a-- a novel experience to learn from, yes? --please, do not mind the presence of my forebearerss. They will teach uss as we go."

Shikaree's excitement brings out a little hissing lisp, but that doesn't stop the nagaji from unslinging a well-made bow. "I work besst at range, but I would be honored to see you all demonstrate!"

So, mechanically, Shikaree is performing a seance, which must be at either a site of violence or some location dedicated to battle, such as a practice/sparring yard. For all characters who are willing to participate daily in the seance (takes an hour each day), this conveys a +2 untyped bonus on physical (i.e., non-spell) damage dealt for the next 24 hours. (Characters must have an INT score of at least 3 to participate.) GM, it is up to you to adjudicate if such a location is available each day of the scenario; you do have the right to say no, and to say that the PCs simply practicing sparring together does not constitute a location that would draw the spirits! But if the opportunity is available, Shikaree would try and start each day with this sacred observance.

***

Shikaree listens with fascination to the knowledge of the other, well-traveled agents. "How wisse you all are! I am so humbled to be among Pathfinderss so experienced. Queen Marcie, and Makoa the Wise! Yess. It is good. I am so honored, yess, yes, indeed!"

The Irrica summer estate is a two-story gothic structure that was assaulted in the opening weeks of the Goblinblood Wars. The few narrow windows have been boarded up from inside, and the main doors are scorched and scarred but appear intact. The upper floor appears to have collapsed completely.

Serge surveys the sorry state of the large estate, takes a few steps closer to peer up at the place. "I don't suppose anyone lives here anymore. It is a little unsettling to be near a derelict mansion like this."

Serge puts his game face on, concentrating on the area to get a sense of anything evil that may be here. Detect Evil

He draws his greatsword and whispers a prayer to Ragathiel as he looks for an entry point where the marred front doors stand. "Allow me to lead. I have a bad feeling about walking into abandoned estates, especially when we know people died here."

Makoa tends to the horses.

Serge uses his paladin's spell-like ability to detect evil; he reveals no such auras, lingering or otherwise.

The party is gathered at the foot of the massive staircases in front of the mansion...

The shiny one is pulling his sword, it appears the direct approach is the plan, in that case...

The ooze that is Torgrin quickly grows and forms into a green Serpentfolk with extended claws, then makes some adjustments to the leather armor.

"Let'ssss do thisss then." Torgrin stretches in this new form

Torgrin, or maybe it is the ooze, is most familiar with Darkland humanoids, where his family spent generations digging.

With the morning's invocation of spiritual ancestors still fresh in Shikaree's recollection, the nagaji looks excited to be seeing the manor. (Excited enough to not comment on the ball of dwarven ooze that takes on a vaguely humanoid form with its own hissing dialogue)

As Shikaree is not particularly light of foot-- and is using a bow-- Shikaree hangs back to let the others scout.

"In the training at the Grand Lodge they advissed us to mostly sstick together?" comes the hoarse uncertain whisper. "--that isss, I am not contradicting your experienced battle plan! I am learning, yess, I see!"

Serge Foxmourn draws his greatsword and climbs the broad stone southern staircase to an open-air veranda and small vestibule. He approaches the door and listens for any sounds within the forlorn manor.

"Action it is, excellent", Makoa says as Serge goes by him. Makoa bounds down the south stairs and up the north stairs. As he passes the group still at the base of the stairs he says,"Never fear Shikaree was not my intent to split, just wanted to breach the same small room from two sides". He listens at the door waiting to hear Serge go through the door. Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 we can get there in a double move in case timing matters

"Friends, it's locked," Serge says, keeping his voice low. "I would knock, but something tells me there would be no answer. Given the estate is abandoned and we are tasked with entering, I can't imagine we are breaking any laws. A set of lockpicks or a forceful entry may be dramatic, but necessary."

Unsure if anyone has Disable Device. If not, Serge will try to break it down.

Reversing course and climbing the northern staircase, Makoa tries the door on the other side of the vestibule. He hears nothing and realizes this door is locked as well.

Serge tries to break down the door on the south side of the vestibule. It doesn't budge. It might be barred on the inside.

Torgrin sees no gap around the door or boarded-up windows he can squeeze through, though turning around, he spies a sizable area on the landing where the floor is rotted through. I might be able to slither through that and move beneath the mansion.

For simplicity's sake, you can see the floor plan of the entire manor. The places where the floor appears rotted through are suitable spots for Torgrin to emerge inside.
