Scarab Sages

Don't think wife would go for it, though.

Scarab Sages

Plus, I'm not sure I could get one (for a reasonable price) here in the states.

Scarab Sages

Ah well. Time to do stuff.

Scarab Sages

I hear people talkin' bad,
About the way we have to live here in this country,
Harpin' on the wars we fight,
An' gripin' 'bout the way things oughta be.
An' I don't mind 'em switchin' sides,
An' standin' up for things they believe in.
When they're runnin' down my country, man,
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Runnin' down the way of life,
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.
If you don't love it, leave it:
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.
If you're runnin' down my country, man,
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

I read about some squirrely guy,
Who claims, he just don't believe in fightin'.
An' I wonder just how long,
The rest of us can count on bein' free.
They love our milk an' honey,
But they preach about some other way of livin'.
When they're runnin' down my country, hoss,
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Runnin' down the way of life,
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.
If you don't love it, leave it:
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.

Was woken up at 0400 today by a noise from upstairs. Quickly realized it was the boy moving the step stool in his bathroom out of the way so he could close the door. Then we heard him close every other door upstairs in succession. Finally, he came downstairs and I found him sitting on the sofa.

Scarab Sages

I've come to a decision. Not sure why it popped in my head this morning, but there it was. When Paizo bloats the initial version of the Pathfinder rules to the point where they have to move forward with Pathfinder 2.0 (or whatever), is when I'll be cancelling my AP subscription and counting myself done with RPGs.

I don't really play anymore as is, so it wouldn't be a stretch for me.

Scarab Sages

For a fraction of a second I considered, on that fateful day, starting to subscribe to the Pathfinder Tales novels, but then I remembered that there's a reason I don't already have one and don't buy all the books they put out - because I find some of the writers they get to be....less than impressive.

Scarab Sages

I've enjoyed the Dave Gross books, and the Tim Pratt stuff, and Sutter's first book (haven't gotten around to the second one yet). And that one by Hugh Matthews was ok. I've got the Byers book but haven't read it yet.

The rest? Meh.

Scarab Sages

But I'm older and crankier these days, and don't have as much time to read as I used to.

Scarab Sages

Not to mention that whole sexist pig thing I've got going for me - with a few wonderful exceptions (especially from Planet Stories) I've never found many women who can write stories I find interesting.

Scarab Sages

But, again, I'm kind of an a+~##** that way. If people don't like it, they can kiss my lily white ass.

Scarab Sages

And it is lily white.

Scarab Sages

All right - that's enough cranky from me.

I finished The Crusader Road about a week ago, it was pretty good.

Exiled myself to the garage tonight while the wife watched her "chick flick masquerading as cool time travel back to medieval Scotland" show. Turns out, you get me drinking around power tools and short pieces of wood, and I make wooden stakes to fight vampires.

Scarab Sages

Watched Gotham on Fox. Interesting, but I don't think it'll last. The cast is interesting enough, but seriously....?

Spoiler:
A young Catwoman didn't witness the murder of the Waynes. And they're already hinting that it was some mysterious conspiracy, not the long established random actions of a scared criminal. And I don't think Riddler and Penguin were ever supposed to be that much older than Bruce Wayne. And I'm certain that Montoya and Crispus Allen didnt predate Batman.

But those are just my beefs as a longtime collector of Batman comics. I just also don't think it'll work. A vast conspiracy? Meh? Characters acting stupidly just to advance the story? Meh. And then there's the whole "it's on Fox" thing. If it isn't a huge, mega-hit, they'll drop it like a hot potato.

All in all, I give it a 20% chance of seeing season 2.

Scarab Sages

I could be wrong. But the other part - no Batman. And no actual rogue's gallery. Batman and (some) of his big enemies are what's popular. Young Bruce Wayne? Not so much. Oswald? Maybe. Nygma? Way overplayed. Fish Moony? Pathetic attempt to be nice and PC.

Scarab Sages

Although Jada Smith is an awesome actress, and the character itself is pretty cool.

Scarab Sages

And there was one scene that impressed me - Bruce showing some assertiveness and authority with Alfred. Very well characterized.

Scarab Sages

What will they become?

Scarab Sages

How about a show with a less dumbass tag line?

We decided to try and let the kids sleep over at my brother's house on Thursday while we go to the Tom Petty concert. Hopefully, they're won't be any problems.

Scarab Sages

I think I'm going to write a novel about the big comeback of the Mongols as conquerors. It'll be a fiendishly clever campaign involving the use of fermented goat's milk and GhengisBots!

Scarab Sages

Because, you know the Mongols have just been lulling everyone into a false sense of security all these centuries.....

Scarab Sages

I saw an article yesterday about how Apple is admitting problems with the latest iOS release. The problems given jive with what I've experienced since I downloaded that stupid update.

It's s&$# like this that makes me wonder why so many are fanatical over Apple products. They have problems. They're not f~$#ing perfect.

Gonna be a long day - work until 1630, then go home and get ready for the Tom Petty concert tonight. Ugh. Not that I don't like Tom, but long days like this really wear me down.

Scarab Sages

But, I'm planning on taking off all day tomorrow.

Silver Crusade

I saw Tom here at the outside lands festival. He puts on a great show

batman's rogues gallery has been notoriously monochromatic and male. DC more so than marvel has had a historical problem with this, and batman is one of their oldest characters.

Man, I am jealous, I always wanted to see him live but naver had the chance

Tom Petty concert kicked ass. Dude really puts on a good show. He did a few songs from the new album, but most of it was old stuff. Even did some acoustic.

Scarab Sages

And the kidlets did great at my brother's house. No crying, and they slept through the night.

I would imagine this is partly due to the time period when the characters were developed, along wih most of the writers being white and male. I've got no real problem with that.

My dislike of the Fish Moony character comes from poor writing. They make her essentially a lieutenant of sorts in the Italian Mafia, something that just doesn't make sense. It would have been better to show her as some kind of outside rival. That, to me, would have made the character more scrappy and realistic.

Scarab Sages

There are days when I'm extraordinarily grateful for the genius of the PMG.

Scarab Sages

Bressed sirence!

Scarab Sages

So to speak.

Scarab Sages

"What are you wearing, Jake?"

Scarab Sages

What to do for lunch?!?

Scarab Sages

Time for a time out!

Scarab Sages

More and more, I'm enjoying being curmudgeonly.

Scarab Sages

I'll make an excellent "sits on his porch and shakes his cane at the whippersnappers" old man, one day.

Scarab Sages

It all goes hand in hand with giving less of a f!%+ every day.

Scarab Sages

I shall have several shirts made. Each will show a dial with various labels around it: curmudgeon, hippie, a$+~$!!, misogynistic pig, bringer of joy, etc.

The difference between them will be where the dial is set. I may need more than one of certain shirts, since I wouldn't want to wear the same shirt multiple days in a row.

Scarab Sages

Especially the one with the dial set to a!#***!.

Scarab Sages

And bringer of joy. That applies to me more often than one might think.

Scarab Sages

Although less often than it used to....

Scarab Sages

Read that Chelsea Clinton had her baby. A girl. They named her Charlotte. Good name. Congrats to her and her husband. I may not agree with their politics, but I'm always happy to see someone become a parent.

Scarab Sages

Kids are upstairs with mommy, so I get to watch non-"the boy" TV. Found some old Batman episodes on. So cheesy it's awesome!
