Trisane & Ophelia would go in first. Nik can hang back in the southwest room in case we get into trouble.
Trisane nods in agreement.
Good. Ophelia, come with me. I’ll probably need some of your charms to make this work. Nik stay back here and be on lookout. We may need to get out quick. Let’s go.
Trisane leads onward toward the door slowly and quietly. He listens for a few moments at the eastern double doors to try to hear a conversation before swinging them wide open and beginning the ruse.
Stealth: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

GM-Grenfax |

You approach the double doors, but all you hear are the thumps and thuds of men working on the other side, nothing distinguishable, and no conversations. The doors open easily enough.
The floor of this grim chamber is strewn with blood-stained straw, and the reek of slaughter is almost overpowering. The room is a killing floor. Meat hooks dangle from a metal track affixed to the ceiling that allows the hooks and their gory loads to be moved easily around the room. In the northwest corner, a large hammer sits on the floor amid a permanent bloodstain. To the south, a bloodstained grill covers a wide hole in the floor. Just north of the grill sit two large vats of water, one boiling and one cold. Two large butcher blocks stand to the east next to barrels of salt, and in the southeast corner sits a reeking vat of cast-off meat and bones. A broad-shouldered man with long sideburns works at cutting apart large chunk of meat at one of the butcher blocks. The other man found here is a thin and jittery man with a sallow complexion. Both are clearly butchering an animal from the pens.
The two men look at each other as you enter. Meat is only available up front, or is there something else we can help you with? the broad shouldered man asks.

![]() |

While those two deal with the people, maybe I should check on the animals. Who knows, maybe they can be used to cover an escape if needed.
Nik approaches the gate to the nearby pen to look and see both the condition and number of animals present.

![]() |

So far so good...
Like I said, my business would be with Malder...
Trisane continues a steady approach toward the northern wall until he is near the set of doors in the middle. He tries to maintain a rough demeanor but softens his voice when he gets close to the man with long sideburns.
But just 'tween you an me, a pretty little bird told me you boys might need some help around here and I ain't talkin about choppin up meat.
Trisane winks at the man in an obvious fashion while resting his hand on the hilt of his longsword.
Bluff: 1d20 ⇒ 7

GM-Grenfax |

The broad shouldered man looks at Ophelia, and his eyes narrow for a moment. Trisane, you think this is going to be too easy. And then the broad shouldered man speaks. Don't know her, but I bet Malder would like to. He is up front, door is behind you.
Outside Nik continues to survey the scene in the pens, and locks eyes with a certain raven as he hops along the top of the pen.

Asta e liniștitor. Având în vedere acestea se pot transforma invisibile, nu-i văd este un fel de așteptat.
Nik rubs one of the spots where he was stung. His joints and muscles still feel weak and tight.
He smiles even with the discomfort and looks at Rom.
Iti multumesc totusi. Dacă nu le-a văzut când ai făcut-o, Trisane poate să nu fi făcut. Cred că ar trebui să lucreze la predarea el limba poporului nostru, deși, în acest fel el poate să înțeleagă și să vorbească cu tine.

![]() |

Argh! oh well... there's no turning back now. We need to know what's goin on here.
Trisane looks over to the broad shouldered man with the cleaver.
That's too bad. I was really hoping we could be friends... Sorry about this.
He draws his longsword and swings forcefully at the man's head in an attempt to knock him out. Then steps back 5' west against the vat.
Move Action - Draw MW Longsword. Standard Action - Non-Lethal Attack.
Non-Lethal Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Ophelia_Wintrish |

Oh no!
Ophelia takes a step away from Trisane and the man Obstupefacio, she says as she casts a spell at the broad shouldered man. Once she releases the spell, she'll grab one of her wands and point it at the other man threateningly, don't make me disintegrate you!
Bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Casting daze, DC 14 Will or he can't take any actions this turn.

![]() |

Sounds like things might be getting tense in there.
Nik makes sure his crossbow is secure and pulls his quarterstaff from his back. He nods a Rom and makes ready to open the door if things get any worse.
Păstra un ochi deschis. Cred că ar putea avea nevoie de ajutor.

GM-Grenfax |

The broad shouldered man does not seem to respond to Trisanes sword arching past his head.
The other man with the sallow complexion screams out, Intruders - we are being attacked! then he moves towards Ophelia, drawing a long sword and swinging it wildly. Aaaaahhhhhwwwwww!!!! If he is worried about being disintegrated, he is apparently going to go down swinging! Fortunately for Ophelia, swinging is all he does, as the sword misses her.

Ophelia_Wintrish |

Not that it matters.
Forgot to add in +1 for bless, he has a really low touch attack, right?

![]() |

Fire, what a wonderful idea.
Nik steps forward, sizing up the positions of his opponents. He fans his hands across himself and says a small prayer. Fire ignites in an arc, enveloping the sallow man and the archer that fired at Nik.

Apparently the, the shop's patrons had gathered in the hallway and are watching from the open doorway, just narrowly missing the gout of flames, they pull back into the hallway a bit, still holding the doors open watching.

Trisane makes an attempt to close the doors to the hallway to block the view from the public.
Move Action equivalent - Close a door. No AoO.

GM-Grenfax |

I erred when I said the broad shouldered man was rolling on the ground - that would have been the new guy, he was the target of the alchemist fire and the one directly hit. So adjudicating, the butcher with the meat cleaver missed you, and the new guy is on the floor, so Trisane would have attacked the broad shouldered man last action.
The broad shouldered butcher falls under the blow of Trisane's sword. he moves to close the doors, but they are physically being blocked by the crowd.
What in the Abyss is wrong with you, you murdering thug! Does the Queen want us to starve?shouts a twig of woman who, from the look of her settled the city with Korvosa himself. There are a chorus of agreeing comments from behind her.
Malder is hit by another magic missile, then stabbed by Nik. Try and do some good, and feed the people, and the Queen sends her stormtroopers to crush the common man! Malder says a bit too loudly as he drops the bow and raises his hands.

Ophelia_Wintrish |

What in the hells is going on here? At least they stopped fighting.
Ophelia looks to Malder, wand pointed at him, I don't know what you're talking about, we're just looking for Verik Vancaskerkin. We need to speak with him. Is he here?
She then looks to Nik, Nik, can you check on the big guy?

![]() |

Uh oh… I better say something to calm these people.
Trisane turns to face the crowd as the last combatant surrenders. He sheathes his sword and reaches out his hands openly to explain.
Listen everyone! No one’s dying here today if I have anything to say about it. What you are witnessing is justice!
He points down at the unconscious broad shouldered butcher.
These men here are deserters of the Korvosan Guard. They swore an oath to protect you in time of need and carelessly cast their words aside for their own selfish ends…
Trisane pauses, looks over at Malder for a moment then turns back to the crowd putting his hands on his hips in an attempt to look heroic.
I’m here with the authority of the Guard, the Sable Company and the Queen. I assure you, you have not been abandoned. There is plenty of food here for everyone. If you are hungry, take it, it’s yours. You no longer need the help of these four criminals. They’re coming with me.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

![]() |

Nik steps forward to the big that dropped to make sure he is okay. He returns his dagger to his belt and the Harrow deck as well.
Let's see how you are doing here.
If Nik determines he is stable then Nik will place him in manacles before healing him. If he is not stable, Nik will heal him with the healing hex immediately.
Healing Hex 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

GM-Grenfax |

Malder looks at Ophelia and grins. Verik, was here, feeding the people, asking nothing in return! Find him yourself.
The broad shouldered man needs the healing hex and wakes in manacles.
From the hallway, Trisane's proclamation is met with a chorus of responses:
Justice - This isn't justice!
These men are protecting us, with out them we would starve!
Selfish - these men never asked for anything from us!
To the Abyss with the Queen and the the Guard then!
As the crowd's anger grows, Malder encourages them further, See, the Queen wants you to starve, to burn, and sends her soldiers to oppress you! I bet she dines well each night in the castle, while you will be left to starve!
With the little old lady in the vanguard, the crowd seems to pack together in the hallway, resolute that you won't pass through that way.

![]() |

Nik stands now that the man is contained. He turns to the crowd and tries to see if he can help them see reason. With a soft voice he addresses the little old lady at the head.
Bunica, please hear us before things turn bad for us all.
Nik then talks to the crowd in general.
Folks, we understand that you are scared and concerned. And these men may in fact have your best interests in mind. We, as representatives of the Guard, want to get to the truth. We were simply investigating the abandonment of these men from their posts, and if they were trying to take advantage of the current chaos to do harm.
We mainly wanted to talk to one man, Verik, as it was rumored he led some guards from their posts and may be the cause of certain troubles. These men were not cooperative in that investigation and things got out of hand. Now for our safety, and yours, we will contain these men for now and get to the bottom of it all.
Once we have found the truth we will bring those who have committed crimes to justice and the rest will be released with our sincerest apologies. As for the help they provided, the guard is not interested in harming any of you. Tomorrow, I assure you that this shop will open and aid will be provided as normal.
Nik again addresses the old lady at the head.
Bunica, I assure you that Blessed Dreamer guides me in this. I will not allow these events to bring any people harm. Please lead your people back to safety and let us finish our business.
