No, I am not a lemming. I am perfectly with them dying in there. For all we know they didn't even survive first contact with the quicksilver. Its probably somesort of portal to the Abyss. One way too. Dragorin muses as he continues to study the chaotic energy.

Fort, +3 for 3 adjacent allies: 1d20 + 11 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 11 + 3 = 31
Terrill reels in pain at the roper’s brutal attacks, then blinks out of existence, reappearing on the far side of the creature, blade swinging.
Now I’ll activate judgments, but I’ll go with AC and Fast Healing 4, putting Terrill at 34 hp. Dimensional Hop to other side of roper and attack.
+1 Keen Curve Blade, Power Attack, Outflank: 1d20 + 14 - 2 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 14 - 2 + 4 = 20
Curve blade damage, Power Attack, Precise Strike: 1d10 + 8 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 6 + (2) = 18

This is probably too much of a ret-con, but I don't believe Terrill used his jingasa for the critical first hit he took. Hal will also contribute to a raise dead if needed.
"Terrill!" Hal cries in dismay, seeing the half-elf fall. He looks up at the creature and hardens his defenses before settling on its destruction. "Marwolaeth i'r rhai sydd â anghywir i mi!" he shouts, in unison with a cry from his bow. (Elven for 'death to those who have wronged me!') Declaring the rock-thing as the designated foe of my oathbow, which henceforth is treated as a +5 weapon against that target and deals an additional 2d6 damage on each hit. He reaches for that set of cold iron arrows coated in an adamantine sheen...
+5 Oathbow, Manyshot: 1d20 + 19 - 2 - 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 19 - 2 - 3 + 1 + 1 = 30
Damage, Part 1 (Adamantine, Cold Iron, Piercing): 1d8 + 2 + 5 + 1 + 6 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 5 + 1 + 6 + (1, 6) = 27
Damage, Part 2 (Adamantine, Cold Iron, Piercing): 1d8 + 2 + 5 + 1 + 6 + 2d6 ⇒ (8) + 2 + 5 + 1 + 6 + (4, 3) = 29
+5 Oathbow, Rapidshot: 1d20 + 19 - 2 - 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 19 - 2 - 3 + 1 + 1 = 30
Damage (Adamantine, Cold Iron, Piercing): 1d8 + 2 + 5 + 1 + 6 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 5 + 1 + 6 + (5, 5) = 25
+5 Oathbow, Iterative: 1d20 + 14 - 2 - 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 14 - 2 - 3 + 1 + 1 = 21
Damage (Adamantine, Cold Iron, Piercing): 1d8 + 2 + 5 + 1 + 6 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 5 + 1 + 6 + (1, 3) = 19
Also, holy crap, Atum's attack was turned?!?!
Halbarad of Arbor

True, I missed that.
Terrill Mayern
|
Eek. I totally meant to cast stoneskin before going in, but I was posting in a hurry before rushing off to a meeting.
But - Terrill was at 34 hp thanks to his Fast Healing 4, which Bold Strider sometimes misses in his HP tally. He took 46 points, which would put him at -12. He has a Con of 14, so he's not quite dead! Anyone besides Dragorin have a way of healing him in the next two rounds without also becoming almost dead?
Terrill Mayern
|
Also, for what it's worth, I think Atum's attacks were just below the bad thing's AC. And thanks for your offer to help raise Terrill, also, Atum, I missed that earlier.
Halbarad of Arbor

I have a wand of curing, as do several others adjacent. As for not dying in the process... we'll have to see. :)
And that makes much more sense as to why Atum's attacks missed (rather than 35+ dmg just ignored, lol). Reading comprehension after several drinks: poor.
Flinders Offendurr
|
While getting his bearing, Flinders quickly assess the situation. Lemmings! Stepping behind Desmond for cover, Flinders flicks his wrist, producing a wand, then reaches down to tap Terril with it.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
He then reaches into his pack and withdraws a small brown colored gem.

I did not realize that soft cover prevented AoO's with reach attacks. That's very good to know.
Basalte
|
Fort: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30 2 Strength damage, halved to 1
Fort: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31 1 Strength damage, halved to 0
I believe that's 3 Str damage, right?
Dragorin

So, I'm the only one outside.
What round am I in with the detect Chaos?
| GM Bold Strider |
@Terrill: Sorry for not being clear, the creature came off of a hold action immediately after Basalte attacked a second time to give the group a chance to back down from trying to kill it. Any Inside actions that occurred after Basalte's attacks were retconned, which includes your change to Fast Healing.
Forgot this for Dragorin's actions.
After focusing some more, he sees one chaotic aura, but shortly after, Dragorin notices that the chaotic aura has vanished.
Halbarad, seeing Atum's attacks merely crack off of the creature's skin, swears an oath to kill the beast. He fires a volley of arrows that kills the creature instantly. The glowing pictures flicker, but continue to show their images.
I believe Basalte and Desmond still have actions before Terrill is declared dead.
@Basalte: Strength Damage isn't halved on a save, but entirely prevented.
Inside Status: Atum @ 82/104 HP; Basalte @ 74 (58)/94 (78) HP.; Desmond @ 86/92 HP; Terrill-Dead? @ -16/77 HP; Halbarad @ 60/72 HP; Flinders @ 55/73 HP

GM, the first tentacle roll against Desmond missed (touch AC is 17), so only 2 saves are needed.
Fortitude: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Fortitude: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Desmond's strength is sapped from him by the tentacles. He does his best to cut them.
So, 9 STR damage equates to a -4 on STR rolls. Reflected in the rolls below. Same with the -6 to damage. Favored Enemy is added.
Attack: 1d20 + 11 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 11 + 6 = 26
Damage: 2d4 + 1 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 1 + 6 = 10
Iterative Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 6 = 23
Damage: 2d4 + 1 + 6 ⇒ (2, 2) + 1 + 6 = 11
Sorry Terrill, I used up my wand earlier and never replaced it. I don't have anything I can do to help. But I'll pitch in for the resurrection.
Desmond Aesculus

Well...maybe they're still stuck to him? Retcon...
As the strange beast collapses, Desmond turns his attention to the fallen inquisitor.
"Terrill! Get up, man!" The ranger kneels over his comrade and slaps his cheeks, trying to wake him.
"DRAGORIN! Get in here! You won't have anyone to get into bloody arguments with if you can't do anything to save Terrill!"
He looks up and around at the others, "Isn't there anything could be done?"
Terrill Mayern

@Terrill: Sorry for not being clear, the creature came off of a hold action immediately after Basalte attacked a second time to give the group a chance to back down from trying to kill it. Any Inside actions that occurred after Basalte's attacks were retconned, which includes your change to Fast Healing.
Hmm, not sure about the timing here. I stepped into the bubble and was hit by the AoO. I activated my judgments as soon as I entered combat (the timing of PbP posts makes that less than perfectly clear, but my intent to activate my judgments right away was pretty clearly stated). I obviously couldn't activate them before the AoO, since that interrupts my actions.
I initially said I would activate judgments for AC and saves, and you rightly pointed out I couldn't because I wasn't yet in combat. So when I did activate them, I had been hit by the AoO and I activated AC and Fast Healing - and that happened before Basalte's second attack. I didn't switch my active judgments, I just changed which ones I activated based on the condition I was in when I activated them.
| GM Bold Strider |
Okay. I see your arguments and I'm parsing the language.
My understood plan of action was
Terrill's Turn: (Move: Move and Draw AoO; Swift: Activate Judgment for AC/Saves; Standard: Attack)
Monster's Turn: Chomp Terrill->Dead
But you are saying, your stated change to the Judgment types in the post after Basalte's second attack was supposed to change your initial activation from the turn before?
I will concede that changing things on the fly in reaction to stuff like AoOs is hard in PbP. I am just trying to understand your intention because your written post seems to indicate the change to Fast Healing was in the round with Basalte's 2nd attack on the beast.
Terrill Mayern
|
Okay. I see your arguments and I'm parsing the language.
But you are saying, your stated change to the Judgment types in the post after Basalte's second attack was supposed to change your initial activation from the turn before?
That is what I’m saying, since I understood the AoO to hit me before I had the opportunity to activate my judgments. That’s why in this post I said, “Now I’ll activate my judgments.” I meant that the initial judgments I was activating as soon as I had the chance were AC and Fast Healing. If I were switching judgments, I wouldn’t have used the word ‘activate.’
I appreciate your willingness to parse this carefully, and I’ll go with whatever decision you think makes sense here. I’ve no interest in whining or rules-lawyering – but if we were playing in a tabletop game, I would have said, “Okay, he nailed me, I’m going to activate different judgments than I originally planned” and there would not have been this confusion.
| GM Bold Strider |
Yup. PbP does have its own sets of challenges and this is one of them. Sounds good to me! Also, I fully expect to spend ten to twenty posts discussing events after a potential player death just to make sure it is legitimate and that every party has had their say, so there is no need to worry about being perceived as whining or rules-lawyering! It just shows you care about your character, which makes this game the best.
Flinders heals Terrill's body as Desmond leans down to scoop up the half-elf and scream to no one as Dragorin can assuredly not hear him.
Once you recover the corpse of Meskhenet from the rocky body of the roper, you head back downriver and report in to the Pathfinder Society, depositing any information with the Chelish garrisons along the way.
Your way back to Sothis is uneventful, allowing you to reach it in time for your next mission in Echoes of the Everwar.
Chronicles will be posted shortly.
Atum Nakhti
|
Except that:
Reaching Sothis, Atum checks back in to his home Lodge and discovers from Venture-Captain Norden Balentiir that Atum is being promoted to Seeker status and being sent off for some secret mission handed down directly from the Ten.....
With that Atum hits level 12! So I'll be swapping out for someone else for the next two games.
Faraz Aram
|
And here is EF's new character for the rest of the series:
Stepping through the doors as soon as Atum exits is a strapping young half-elf with bulging muscles and a brand shaped like a giant open hand burned into his bare chest. His long hair is pulled back in one long braid that falls past his waist. "I believe there was a request for a Champion to join your group? I am glad to come along and do the bidding of Irori."
He then drops down to the ground and does 1d4 ⇒ 2 dozen pushups before returning to the conversation.
Terrill Mayern
|
Awesome. Great answer, Strider! Obviously, I like the mechanical implications of your answer, but I really appreciate the tone and intent behind it.
As they travel downriver, Terrill gradually recovers from the shattering blows he took from the roper. He spends the journey considering the rashness of his actions and vowing to prepare better for any fights in the future. At least most of the time.
DMBS – as you work on Chronicles, remember Terrill is on slow track. Thanks for running!

Yay, Terrill's not dead! I am also appreciative of your handling this, Bold.
Hal breathes a sigh of relief once he sees Terrill's chest still rising and falling. He gives an affectionate look at his oathbow, stowing it with care, before helping carry both bodies--one living, one dead--out of the cavern.
Back in Sothis, Hal embraces Atum in farewell and bids him luck on his next mission for the Ten. With somewhat more aloofness, he greets the newcomer and introduces himself (with all his titles, self-invented and not).

IRORI!
You should bring Faraz with Karu through EotT. What could be better?
Faraz is my Reign of Winter GM credit holder so after these games he's going to jump a few levels and won't be eligible for Eyes.
A friendly reminder that Desmond is also on the slow track. That was resolved well, GM. Much better than EndlessForms just giving a character a swift kick into oblivion. ;-)
Hey!
Maybe sometimes characters deserve a quick kick into oblivion! ;) Just because I've killed two of your characters (last time I counted)! And Desmond got better! Now, I'll admit that killing off your inquisitor was a damn shame because I liked that character and he had that great custom boon I gave him. But I did warn you that Dalsine Affair has probably the highest body count of any scenario.
I think Tek is catching up to you though. I just killed his Jade Regent character in one of the meanest encounters I've seen in a while.
Basalte
|
Basalte's blade finally comes to a rest as the creature inside the dome dies. The Living Monolith then shrinks back to his original size, feeling a sudden strain in his limbs. He calms down, only to find Terrill almost lifeless on the ground.
On the way back, he spends much time with Atum discussing their condition as Living Monolith, as well as what the future holds for their new masters, the Scarab Sages. The news that Atum won't come to the next part of the journey comes as a sore disappointment to the oread.
"Farewell, Atum. I trust you will serve the Decemvirate with the same dedication you've shown so far. Good luck in your travels."
Halbarad of Arbor
|
But I did warn you that Dalsine Affair has probably the highest body count of any scenario.
Lol, when I ran that the party's only healer (a battle cleric) went from full HP to dead before he could act. They survived, but that was a ROUGH encounter.

Yep, that's what happened to ol' Frunobulax. One hit and ffft - outright dead.

Dragoin is surprised when the entire party emerges from the silver sphere. One he finds out what is in the sphere he will enter and study strange Anomaly.
Sorry I didn't join in the last fight. Dragorin isn't one for charging in. I hope their is no resentment towards me (out of game) for this. I am totally fine with in-character resentment though.
Desmond Aesculus

Halbarad of Arbor

No, actually, I thought it was well-played in character, especially as Dragorin is a Hellknight. Hal probably gave him a sardonic look upon exiting and would likely have (irrationally) blamed him if Terrill died, but not I!

Awesome, in that case:
Dragorin will send his finding to the Paracountess in hopes that a team can be dispatched to recover the orb and bring it back to the dark archives for future study.
