As an aside, this is why I don't like writing a big long backstory. Having stuff come up in conversation A.) Gives you more leeway (you're not locked into every detail) and B.) Feels somewhat more natural rather than everyone either knowing everything about you or pretending NOT to know.

Same here. Arguably my best character had a backstory that he was an intern in a magic factory that gained the Stormborn bloodline when struck by lightning. Everything from there on in game time dictated his character, from family life to his sense of right and wrong to his college antics. So much better when it's allowed to be drawn naturally through roleplay and a good GM. That being said, I hope the things I came up with about Thomas are reasonable in tying him into Reign of Winter.

Duck Tales:
Thomas chewed nonchalantly, listening to the stories. "I feel like the odd man out here. I wouldn't have thought to see more like you two around here. I think I have enough time dormant to work this, if you would excuse me?" He uses a sorcerer spell slot to cast True Seeing on himself.

"Ah, indeed you are lovely, madam. I would say I am a foreigner as well, but not from somewhere so exciting as you or this gentleman. Were I to mention, I came from the same place as Queen Anastasia of Irrisen, if you've heard of the tales."

I tend to go with that myself. I like characters that develop as I play them rather than being locked into a backstory. In this case, though, my submission is a character I've played for 11 levels of PFS so I do know how he reacts already. I don't have any desire to roleplay him in a bar. Not really something he'd do.

I can see both-sides of that argument, GM needs to to plan out a game and a player wants freedom to write as they please. If we where all the same it would be a dull game.

The Mucky Duck:

As for >Bah. Considering the hat only lasts 3 minutes at a time, I'm sure you've reverted form at least once.< You can reactivate a spell and it overlays the old use for items, so just before it pops she spends 6 hole seconds renewing it so it starts the clock anew. Or so its been played in every game I have ever played in.

"O fighting in the Pits, someone life me would, if not invited would call to much attention, and that always ends badly. There was this demon once, was it ever nuts, picked a fight with me as soon as I ran into it. As you say, you CAN talk to a Devil, but Demons, they all seem mad to me. Now a nice dragon, always pleasant ok some want you dead but they are not rude in doing so."

She trys some more fish.

"I meet a cloud dragon once in Elysium who had the mast amazing collection of books, loved to read that thing. Carried them around with it the biggest bag of holding I have ever seen. Found a way not to breath and wand go into the bag to get out what it wanted. Amazing it was."

She has a big grin when she thinks on this then asks.

"So the taint, what was it, horns, tail, hoves? Scales, and did they make you do Unspeakable thing in the pits?, OOoo do tell"

"O the land of the winter witch, Baba Yaga or not, who knows. She loves the ice and chickens, as a real thing for Chickens. or so they say, cold place but the say a nice place to visit if you know where to go"

I agree, a long backstory is not needed, a strong one is. Just make sure I can get a good idea of who your character is, I want to feel like he's a part of me as well. It also helps with group cohesion. (Though, to be fair, the group doesn't even have to stick together at all). I'm ignoring a massive amount of real life responsibilities today so that I can (hopefully) make my picks today. You should all feel honored ;) I'm reading through submissions now.

Cheap, AKA The Good Duck:
"I can tell you, Rosalyn, I know quite well. It was by her Dancing Hut that I ended up here. Was much more imposing than I would have thought from the stories. On top of which, my mentor received a boon from her after some sort of altercation with her daughter." He finished the food on his plate before continuing.

"I'm uncertain on where she is now, but there was a chill Old Grandmother set into my bones. Were it not for that, I would have begged her for knowledge of the arcane. Fortunate I turned to the mage that freed her, Mistress Tessara, instead for my training."

Fingers crossed, Wivvy!

Spoiler:

"Here, it'll be easier to show you."

Cheng turns his face from the rest of the tavern and lowers his mask. a bit.

Underneath lies a fairly normal human face, with some distinguishing characteristics. Scales begin at his temples, mostly avoiding the face, but continuing down his neck and presumably the rest of his body. The eyes are orange in color and glow faintly, with almost imperceptible wisps of smoke drifting off of them. Finally, he smiles widely, showing a mouth full of teeth resembling an ape's.

"Got a bit of a tail too. Comes in handy, as did the scales. Ugly as sin though. Kinda like a monkey tail with scales. Weirder than it sounds."

"To be honest, I like the rest of it though. Sets me apart a bit. I was never pretty, at least now I'm a DIFFERENT kind of ugly."

This brings up a question I meant to ask the GM, would you allow me to roll on (or preferably simply pick from) the Variant Racial Abilities chart? I have no particular need for the Spell-Like Ability racial trait in the best of times, and Devil Spawn's is particularly lackluster. I'd be happy with pretty much anything else.

Edited

The Mucky Duck:

"O that was a close call, she likes to feast in human flesh that one. Why I never had the incarnation to meet her. But Mistress Tessara sounds a lot better and seems to have done you well"

Then as the sight of Cheng true form.

"O now that is a look, You should meet my adopted Daughter Elisabeth, she has such nice horns and a tail that is always up to no good. She's just started the collage of magic here. Well your time in the pit did in deed have an effect, But I think its fine, I know some plan types that have some real odd looks and dont even get me started on Demons. At lease you have an even number of arms."

Cool GM Wivvy, hoping. As for Back storys, I like big strokes then writing little moments form a PCs life. Small story's showing how they act more than what great deeds they have done. Like finding a dying child in the snow. Or meeting old friends or one last night out. I get a much better feel for a PC that way. Its just me but I have so much fun doing it.

Darkwing Muck:
"Very strange indeed, friend. I read about a spell that would have reverted your condition, if you wished so, but it was lost to the ancient sorcerer-kings of man. I doubt any alive have any inkling on how it works. So sorry."

He turns to Rosalyn. "Indeed she has been a great teacher. Amazing mage, her. Perhaps you may meet her one day."

is that a demonic duck of some sort?:

The large man wearing full body metal armor speaks up having been ordering food (a saucer of spiced sake, a roast chochobo leg with a side of potatoes. At the talk of the other planes he states "I too am not from this plane, though my home plane is a material one.... Visitors are not usually of the friendly sort." once the true seeing is in place it becomes apparent that he isn't just wearing the armor, but that his skin has been replaced by metal in several places

The Mucky Duck:

"I may meet here one-day, she dos seem interesting. As for lost magic, yep there is a lot of that around."

Heh, fun ruleset. Took me about 10 minutes to come up with a build, paizo only, that'd allow AoE anyone under 30 HD has to make a DC 40 Fort save or Die.

Good luck!

Easy to say but hard to show, builds have to be shown to be believed.

:)

Everyone else

I shall direct you to the crux of the matter, sir, it's no secret.

Ragecaster (Su)

Starting at 4th level, a rage prophet’s spells grow more potent when he rages. When using moment of clarity, he adds his barbarian level to his caster level. At 7th level, he adds his Constitution bonus to the save DC of any spells cast while raging.

Combine this with Gestalt, and it's not hard to see how it falls together. Your Barbarian Level will be 18, for starters, and your Con score should be well past the thirties while Greater Raging.

The AoE save or Die I mentioned was just one possibility. You can cast 7th level spells, with a caster level in the upper 30s/low 40s depending on your focus, and a DC through the roof. Pick a nasty spell. Incidentally, you should also have over 300 HP with this build, so you're not exactly becoming a glass cannon to pull it off.

Happy optimizing, all!

Okay everyone, I hate to do this to you, but I'm having a rough time picking from all of the awesome applications. So here's what I want you to do:

Tell me about your character, are you a schemer, a conman? Are you humble? Are you a cocky SOB? I'm sure you all know your characters well, but the point is the I need to. I'll wait until at least most of you do this before I pick.

NOTE: I'm not asking for an essay, just give me what you thin it takes. You could even say "He's conniving, snobby. cocky, clumsy, and a loudmouth." That works just fine.

The Grey Spectre is heroic, and over the top about it. While he won't be climbing up trees to rescue cats or help little old ladies cross the street, he's pretty much a classic super hero. Fighting crime, trying to save the world, here he comes just in time, etc, etc, etc.

Heroic posses, witty banter when and where possible, flashy entrances, all that silly nonsense and more.

Norathior is someone who's just doing his best to learn about the world. He uses his age and powers to help those around him and is generally fairly humble about doing so, but is occasionally caustic and sarcastic. He struggles with questions of morality when forced to fight those who aren't clearly evil, but makes his best judgement, trusting in himself.

In feeling: Rosalyn is the healing light, when the night is dark and all hope is lost, she try's to shine the way. Honest, kind and caring, gentile, and understanding, seeking always to protect and heal those others have forget, she's compassionate, empathic and forgiving. She will always offer redemption and help to any who will take it. In action:, while others are cruel, she is kind, while others rage in anger she speaks calming words, while other are violent, she negotiate, while other hurt she heals. Friendly with happy go lucky seance of humor I'm Life. At times she can be even child like in her sense of wonder and joy at the world around her. Your just as lickly to find her healing a poor pennyless mother in a hut as a king in his court.

Roselyn is the caring heart.

Thomas is more humble than your average archmage. He cares more about the magic itself than the prestige, like it's an art form. But when it comes to it, he throws himself into his art and embraces it with all his being. Beyond just magic, he takes all knowledge as his province, attempting to garner what he can from the world with open eyes and a sense of wonder. One of the only things he really hates is someone who doesn't have any passion, ardor, or ambition for their pursuits.

In short, he's curious, inquisitive, and driven but not above it all.

Dudley is, not surprisingly, modeled on Dudley Do Right. He is a bit dim, but always tries to do the right thing, and will not compromise on his morals. He wishes to save everyone, and has no problem risking his own life to do so, no matter how 'unimportant' the person in danger (in one module, he jumped off a 50' cliff to get to the bottom in a hurry to channel and save someone who was bleeding out).

He also fully believes in the notion of redemption. At one point he even accepted the surrender of a demon, because it laid down it's arms and accepted being bound. (of course it was executed by the local authorities, but that's how the law works).

Dudley doesn't care about riches or fame. Riches are a means by which he can be equipped to save more people, but that is all.

Now if this makes him seem like a very annoying goody two shoes, that is to a degree true, but one of his 'saving graces' is that he implicitly assumes his companions to be good also, and does not question their motives. This was part of his Pathfinder Society indoctrination. He can eventually catch on, but it will take some prodding.

He could rather be seen as a parody of paladinhood in some ways, but not precisely. He does tend to say some really dumb stuff though (again, he's pretty dim).

Shadow Lodge

John is a man driven by a need to know, and to a much lesser extent patriotism.
If an espically weird monster attacks the party he might shout something to the effect of "don't kill it! I want to see how it does [incert weird thing here]!" After the fight he'd strap the thing reainamate it, and take it appart to see how it ticks, not nessiarially in that order.
If he has a defining flaw it's hubris or being too pragmatic in regards to.... Let's call it human resources.
John is a sufferer of SRMD (science related memetic disorder, basically mad science disease) though his is more manageable than most.... Partially because he's discted and expiramented on himself to include his brain.
He's crazy, but still a nice guy,

Zuzhou is gruff, but not unfriendly. He's a fan of sarcastic remarks and witty one-liners, but when it comes to meaningful interactions with other people he falls short. His time in the Pit has stunted his social skills, and his time after climbing back out hasn't been much better. Most people not in the adventuring business don't look too kindly on people who share Fiend blood, or are suspicious of someone who hides his face behind a hood and mask. Despite this he's well spoken with a good vocabulary, though sometimes he lapses into rougher speech, almost dwarfish in nature.

He's a man of his word, so he doesn't give it lightly. He's often motivated by coin, though particularly heinous injustices will set his blood to boiling as fierce as any Paladin. Especially ones having to do with Devils and other Fiends. His time spent among them has heightened his hatred, and tempered it with an understanding of exactly what they are. In these cases, he will gladly volunteer for a mission, regardless of the price (or lack thereof), though certainly won't turn down a reward offered freely. After all, a man's gotta eat, eh?

Despite his hatred of Fiends, he revels in the gifts he received from the Pit. They make him better able to fight , both in general and especially against the evil creatures who hide in the darkness and stalk their prey.

That's pretty neat, but it actually doesn't work. Prestige classes like Rage Prophet, Arcane Trickster, and the like taht progress two different classes are precluded from being taken in Gestalt.

"We're in a position to offer you a great deal on these swords ... they're excellent condition ... very little wear .... only dropped once."
-Szzat Tamm, concluding negotiations on an arms deal in the City of Brass

Sazzat Tamm is a cocky salesman. You have to be when you're cutting arms deals with creatures from across the planes.

He's a half-fiend salesman with a stogie clenched in his teeth looking for any advantage he can find in a negotiation.

He is a firm believer in the letter of a contract. He's got a strong dose of Lawful running through his personality (he gets that in combination from his devil mother and his work as a merchant in the Brazen Claw Consortium). If he was a gamer, he'd definitely be a RAW kind of guy, and he would think an argument based on RAI was silly.

He and his organization believe in delivering what was promised and extracting payment when payment is due.

He sees good and evil as just two different sides of the coins he gets paid. He's seen/supported both sides of struggles between the forces of good and evil and he thinks the extremists on both sides of such conflicts are ridiculous (even if they are good for business).

He would gladly deliver a consignment of arms to a demon lord prepping for a renewed invasion of the World Wound one day, and then make delivery of a Holy Avenger to a Paladin on the other side the next.

He's seen enough conflict between good and evil across the planes that he doesn't think either side can ever score a meaningful victory, so getting worked up about who has a local advantage in some fight doesn't make sense.

He's driven by success in the only structure/organization he's been a part of through his life. Becoming a full principal in the Brazen Claw has been the only real goal he's ever had. He's never considered what he would do once he attained that success.

Kawai considers himself a lighthearted individual, pragmatic, neither a pessimist nor an optimist, but a realist.

Life is what it is. He certainly isn't above finding humor in life. And sometimes that requires a little proactive assistance on his part. Rarely enough to cause real harm. Though he believes that a good dose of humiliation is good for those that need it.

He'll help those that need it, but won't carry those that don't try to help themselves or feel entitled to charity.

Often working from the sidelines or shadows, he definitely finds discretion to be the better path.

James Bonfire is a ladies man, though his first love would be nature. He'd go out of his way to help a squirrel in the city but do nothing to help a deer caught by a wolf. That's the way it's supposed to be. He prefers talking to those who can be reasoned with and his swords for those who can't. He's humble but confident about himself as he knows what his capabilities are.

I've had a busy day, I'll add a description in response to this as soon as I can later this evening.

Graah!, contrary to the common assumptions about his species, is a thinker. He is a deep well of thought, opinions, and philosophies, and possessed of a ironclad collection of opinions based on firsthand observations. That is not to say he is close minded, but he is perhaps a bit jaded when it comes to new streams of thought. Though he is not particularly old, as creatures on Golarion are reckoned, and neither is his species long lived, he is possessed of a deep and calculating intellect and has been able to study the collected wisdom of many of history's greatest minds, and what is more, understand them.

He does what he does now, as a practically world renowned monster hunter, not because he craves glory or wealth, but because he believes that it is the way of the universe to create a nemesis to each being, no mater how powerful. He has proven to be the superior to innumerable beasts and creatures, and in a way, he harbours a deep seeded and morbid curiousity about what challenge the universe might bring about in order to accomplish his own end.

On a practical level, Graah! is calm, studious, and curiously wise for one of his ilk. He is honourable, as the value of order and law became quickly apparently to him during the early days when he lived among the monks in the monastery. Treat him fairly, an he will deal with you in kind; show you are without honour, and his own will take on a edge of ruthless efficiency, present and observed, but tempered with a distinct lack of mercy or compassion.

Better spelling

Cale is a Stalwart seeker of knowledge. Since he knows that the best knowledge is located in the worst places, he goes to retrieve knowledge wherever it lays. He hates those that would horde knowledge, or use it to subjugate or abuse those "beneath" them. He has "pruned" more than one noble family that has forgotten that it's responsibility is to protect their vassals, not use them as playthings. Cale is a published author, having written 2 books about his adventures, and 17 books about various subjects that he has discovered or recovered knowledge on. While not widely known, several of his books are popular in scholarly circles.

Cale has turned away from his nation of birth to embrace the good gods. He holds special disdain for the worshippers of Urgathoa, who use their knowledge of magic to counteract one of the fundamental forces of the universe: Death.

He is honorable, charitable, and forthright. He tends to be a man of few words, as the fewer words one uses, the less likely they can be used against you.

His primary motivation (other than the liberating and sharing of knowledge) is redemption. He will repeatedly offer enemies the chance to surrender, then should they not be swayed, he will attack with mercy and without the intent to kill. He believes that all things have the potential to be redeemed: objects, places, spells, items, and so on... (while he would never cast nor benefit from it, if infernal healing or lesser infernal healing was used, he would not be offended by the user, since they are using something evil to do good).

The Mucky Duck:

Rosa seems happy now she has had something light but nice to eat.

"You know it has been a while, I once worked with the pathfinders and I meed those days. It was dangerous but it was fun. We really helped others and stopped some very bad things from happening. Life seems.. slower now."

She seems wistful as if remembering things.

The more I think about it, the harder it is for me to decide if I want to keep Thomas as a White Mage or retool him into a Brown-Fur Transmuter. I think that would be better for support, especially if we don't find ourselves in need of excess healing. Plus it doesn't quite seem right that the engineer learns how to heal instead of studying transmutation more. If no one minds, I'd like to make that change.

Also, Ryu, if Sacred Geometry is something you're shaky on, would you think picking up the Seeker sorcerer archetype is too much, too?

The Mucky Duck:
"Then consider yourself lucky." Thomas starts, producing a journal full of notes. "If you were still interested in my work, take a gander. Nearly a hundred pages on the effects of applying metamagic to Battering Blast. Calculations, proofs, conceptualizations. Nothing slow in this, but very narrow; likely my worst work in years. Teaching and study are good and keep the mind busy, but I would love to see my work in more practical use instead of in theory." He gives a slight, sad shake of his head.

The Brown Fur Transmuter is AMAZING.

This has almost no practical value, but fun fact: Time Stop is a Transmutation spell.

Seems like some value to me, once I pick up that spell. Gonna retool my spell selections before we start if I get picked, but I think I'd like to give several people Shapechange.

How is the selection process going Wivvy?

aceDiamond wrote:

Shapechange is a great spell for this, though by far the best Polymorph spell for buffing martials is Monstrous Physique.

Time Stop has little value since it basically can only be used for buffing yourself. It can be BRUTAL in conjunction with someone who can wreck shop when fully buffed (but requires quite a few short duration buffs) or someone who summons a lot though.

There is the delayed fireball trick with Time Stop that is pretty mean. Can't you use the time to summon critters?

Yes (which I mentioned above).

My point was that casting Time Stop on OTHER people is likely to be less fruitful than casting it on yourself, unless those other people have spells you don't.

Oh, my bad. Didn't read carefully.

A while ago, I realized you could use Time Stop to summon a bunch of uses of Mage's Sword. Never got to try it, but may use it at some point over the campaign if I make the cut.

I hate you all. Saw 12 new posts when I got online and thought Wivvy had finally made his selections. But nooo, you all need to have discussions and be civilized. Don't you people have homes? :P :P :P

You guys need better furniture. Or blood circulation.

M. Duck:
Thomas hands over the journal. It's about as tangled and impenetrable as a concrete octopus. Calling it chicken scratch would be offensive to chickens.
"Pardon if my shorthand is tough to read. Much of that was notes."

Silver Crusade

to those with the ability to see through the glamor enchantment on his armor see that a mask drops down from his helmet covering his face to everyone else (and those with illusion piercing prowess to I guess) the subtle wirring grows more pronounced. She flips pages reading at speed, then stops, closes the book and hands it back and with a grin on her face says.

"Not a clue what its about, did the butter do it?"

She winks at you with a joking look.

I just stay in bed, who needs seats

no I meant to select "the yellow boxes" which is my narrator profile,
