Ripping Gaze (Su) 5d6 slashing damage, 30 feet, Fortitude DC 18 negates. A creature that succeeds on its save is immune to that hound's gaze for 24 hours. Damage caused by a ripping gaze can be defeated by damage reduction, but it bypasses DR/magic and slashing. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Death’s Calling (Su) Once per day as a standard action, a dullahan may place death’s calling on a target within 60 feet (DC 22 Fortitude negates). If the dullahan knows and speaks the target’s name, the target takes a –2 penalty on the save. If the victim fails the save, he becomes staggered for 1d6 rounds. For the next 24 hours (or until the dullahan is
slain), all critical hits against the victim automatically confirm. Finally, the victim automatically fails all Constitution checks to stabilize while dying. This is a mind-affecting curse effect.
(DC is 22)

"That's totally unfair. I sit there for thousands of years with a prepared speech. I've practised holding it uncountable times. And then this insolent gnome shuts me down before I can get to the first sentence of it. I quit. This job sucks." Malegast flings the script into the corner and storms out.

It was constructed as dialogue. He wouldn't have attacked before you try to leave him to further pursue the shard.
It was made poorly in that I would have to come up with all the chit chat as it was told he is interested in talking as he sits there alone for a really long time without new people to talk to. Without giving the text he'd tell.
So it was really convenient to have someone with a short attention span and a strong desire for fiery death available to cut that short :D
