"No idea," Syl responds. "I've never been this far north."
As the ship nears the ice shelf, the defenders hurry inside and secure the gate. As for the ship, it appears to be covered in an oily substance, and you see barrels, casks, and lit lanterns covering the vast majority of deckspace. You also see almost a dozen soldiers lining the ship's rails, preparing to leap ashore as soon as they get close enough.
Skaar
Hoping for answers, Skaar approaches the vessel. He holds one massive hand up in a sign of parley. "Hold your blades!"
Your Benevolent Dictator
You're promptly met by a barrage of javelins - with a pair of ballistae bolts thrown in for good measure.
Ballista: 1d20 ⇒ 16 Damage: 3d8 ⇒ (8, 7, 4) = 19
Ballista: 1d20 ⇒ 16 Damage: 3d8 ⇒ (5, 3, 4) = 12

Javelin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 Crit Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Skaar
It looks like one hit. Do the ballista not have an attack bonus?
Skaar grunts in surprise and anger as one of the grazing javelins manages to draws blood. "That's the only warning you're gunna get."
How far is the ship?
Your Benevolent Dictator
The ballistae don't have an attack bonus as the gunners don't have the necessary skills to effectively use siege weaponry. A crit would be nasty, but that's the only threat.
----------------------------------------------------------------
There's an ice bridge near you that spans the water the ship is traversing. If you're standing on the bridge, the ship is approximately 70ft below you. It's moving 50ft per round.
Skaar
The Unfailing Pillar thunders toward the bridge looming over the approaching vessel. With a booming roar, he leaps off its edge. The big orc falls like a boulder at first but slows his fall with a burst of telekinetic force just strong enough to stick a graceful landing.
I figured something like this should be possible with the telekinetic sphere and the flight talent.
Your Benevolent Dictator
Most definitely. XD
You land solidly on the deck of the ship with a *thud* - much to the surprise of its occupants. The deck is covered with large casks that smell strongly of oil, and you see lit lanterns hanging from each of the ballistae. The boat's ten occupants draw battleaxes and heavy flails before carefully stepping toward you. The boat, meanwhile, continues to sail directly toward the defenders' position with no sign of slowing down.
No map for this one, so assume you're completely surrounded by soldiers - with 5ft of space between you and them. Also, the entire deck is considered difficult terrain.
Fireboat

In a rush of motion, Skaar slams a shoulder into one of the warriors before spinning to smash his fist into another.

If that crit confirmed, it will trigger a boast as an immediate action. That will be steel braggart which grants DR 3 for a turn.
Your Benevolent Dictator
Your shove sends one of the soldiers off the side of the boat as your follow-up punch smashes another in the head. The rest rush in, seeking to overwhelm you through sheer weight of numbers.

I have returned! XD Despite my detailed explanation of the problem and my troubleshooting having narrowed down the cause to two possible hardware issues, the repair shop took a full week to diagnose and repair a broken CPU fan - then tried to sell me a "cleaning of my temporary files" and their custom antivirus software. Methinks I picked the wrong repair shop. Everything's working now, though, and my wife and I are mostly unpacked, so let's get this show back on the road!
You casually heave another warrior over the side of the boat as it continues to sail closer to the defenders' position. It appears to be gaining speed.

For the most part. We've gone from the "boxes everywhere" stage to the "random clutter everywhere" stage, and the house is getting slightly cleaner every day. XD
You easily knock another warrior overboard, but a new threat is becoming apparent. The ship is moments away from colliding with the gatehouse ahead, and if the oily smell coming from the barrels littering the deck is any indication, things are about to get very hot.
You're two rounds away from impact and surrounded by seven soldiers and an animate rope.
Skaar
Is it too late to redirect the ship?
Skaar
How many barrels of oil are on board and do they count as unattended currently?
I'm considering tapping into the creation sphere to either douse the oil, mix it with something to make it inert/non-flammable, or turn it into something else like water. That would mean altering burst to turn the oil into water or expanded materials to try mixing/dousing the oil.
Is there a chance either of those options would work based on what I'm working with?
Skaar
I think I can do that. With inspired spell Creation: Mass Liquid Generation at CL 8 I can fill 8 5-foot squares with water. According to Spheres of Power each one is 125 cubic feet.
Mass Liquid Generation
You may create water even if you do not possess Expanded Materials: Classic Substances.
When attempting to create a liquid, you can treat 5 cubic ft. as a Small object. By spending an additional spell point when using create to fill an area with a non-harmful liquid, you may instead treat a full 5-ft. cube (125 cubic ft.) as a Small object.
That’s something like 7000 gallons of water. =P
The Unfailing Pillar glances at the looming gatehouse and then back at his opponents. His coarse features rapidly flatten into a dark expression. ”I came to you looking for information and you greeted me with arrows and blades. Do not assume my open-handed blows are some kinda weakness. My wrath has sundered mountains. My might is like the ocean.”
The big orc slams his fist into the deck of the ship. The crack of timber from the blow is accompanied by a crack of thunder and deluge of water that washes across the deck of the ship.
Your Benevolent Dictator
Heh. That's rather impressive, actually. And here I was thinking you'd got yourself into an impossible situation. XD *reluctantly puts away a literal bucket of d6*
The warriors onboard had no time to react as a tidal wave swept them off their feet and over the side of the boat. From the stern, you hear a grunt of surprise as (evidently) an invisible creature is also washed overboard. The lashings on the barrels hold, but every surface is thoroughly doused. There's no danger of an explosion now - especially since the frigid temperature is rapidly freezing everything onboard.
Skaar
I imagine a ship crashing into the gatehouse is still going to do some damage but it shouldn’t be nearly as catastrophic.
Satisfied with the outcome of his battle but still lacking for information, Skaar leaps from the deck of the ship onto the defenders’ battlements.
I assume with a decent jump and telekinetic levitation I can get up there?
Your Benevolent Dictator
You can easily land on the battlements - although Syl is still stuck on the ice bridge. Any plans to get her down, or should she set about finding her own way to you?
You make a rather impressive leap onto the battlements, making quite the impression. The half-dozen defenders (who had been in the middle of fleeing the oncoming fireboat) turn in surprise as you land.
Skaar
How much actual distance is it? Could Syl conceivably make the jump/climb on her own? Skaar could carry or TK her but doing so would violate his own teachings if it's something could have accomplished on her own.
Skaar
If that's the case, Skaar will leave Syl to take care of herself.
"The ship with the fiery oil has been dealt with. Now will someone tell me what in the Nine Hells is goin' on here?" the Unfailing Pillar roars in frustration at the defends.
Your Benevolent Dictator
ALL MY GAMES: I'm attending a conference for the rest of the week, so updates will be sporadic at best. I'll resume regular posting on Sunday.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Isn't it obvious? We're under attack! You picked a hell of a time to visit, stranger. The Hungering Legion's out in force, and I don't know how long we'll be able to hold against them."
Skaar
Welcome back.
Sorry about the slowness. Between my father's passing and moving again I've been a little lax in PBPing.
"You can explain who the Hungering Legion is after we've beaten them back. Where's the fightin' the fiercest? I'll buy you whatever time you need to organize your forces."
Your Benevolent Dictator
Not a problem; life happens. Hopefully you're doing a bit better now. Losing a loved one is always hard.
The warriors nod and begin to escort you through the city. Cold, glacial wind whistles through the streets, occasionally punctuated by the muffled impact of a distant catapult or faint rumble that sounds like thunder. The buildings here are constructed mostly of ice, their rooftops and structures nicely sculpted with gables and spouts, each facing wall showing scenes of merchants, ships, and animals like mammoths, reindeer, or whooly rhinos.
There are no signs of activity, and other than distant shouts or the howling wind, it's eerily quiet. Here and there, you notice avenues are blocked by makeshift walls of debris and wagon parts, but no guards are immediately apparent.
Continuing deeper into the city, you come to a plaza occupied by several vast, squat structures composed of a small rectangular construction connected to a much bigger, taller partner. Heavy stone blocks form the walls of each building , each larger one capped in an arching dome of translucent ice. Suddenly, there is a shout, and a human woman bolts from one of the lesser buildings. She clutches something to her chest and runs with a panicked fervor.
Skaar
Spotting the panicked woman, Skaar flags her down. "Hold on there! What's the rush? Are you headed to the front lines?"
Your Benevolent Dictator
There is a rumble of something large in motion, the thunder of a hundred feet, and then the building so recently exited by the woman explodes outward - throwing shards of stone and blasting a huge rent in the wall. Steam pours out into the sleet, and an enormous creature sways sinuously in the gash of broken masonry. On uncounted legs it rushes forward to attack the woman, who looks to you with desperate eyes. "Help!" she shouts. "Please! Help!" She stumbles a bit, trying to turn in your direction.
I'm heading to a work conference, so I haven't had time to put up a map yet, but you're currently 45ft from the woman. The remorhaz is 15ft further away.
Skaar
Finding the danger posed by the remorhaz to be a higher priority than his answers at the moment, Skaar charges into the fray to shield the woman from harm. He closes as much as he can before channeling a barrier large enough to shield her from harm. He eyes the rampaging remorhaz warily.
"This won't hold it for long!" he growls. "Get clear and I'll deal with the beast."
Move. Activate ward making it big enough to brush up against the remorhaz. The ward only has 10 hp but the idea is to keep it from turning this woman into hamburger.
Your Benevolent Dictator
The remorhaz' jaws shatter your ward almost instantly, but the momentary slowdown is sufficient for the woman to duck behind you. The beast glares balefully at you, and you feel the surrounding temperature begin to rise.
Fortunately, you made it waste its action trying to get the woman, so you're up again. XD
Skaar
Wary of the rising heat, Skaar's divine will shapes a ward against flames.
Spending a mythic point to use inspired spell for an energy resistance aegis. That'll give me fire resistance 18 for 8 hours.
Is it still ~60 feet away? If so, Skaar will end his turn with that.
Your Benevolent Dictator
Sorry about the delay. I went to a con and got back the day school started, so it's been a long week.
Still reacting in primal anger, the remorhaz charges directly toward you, teeth first.
Charging Bite: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 13 + 2 = 35 Damage: 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (1, 3, 5) + 9 = 18

Grab: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (1) + 21 = 22
It's now 15ft away from you.
Skaar
Not a problem. Did you go to Gencon?
The beast snaps at the Unfailing Pillar but fails to get a good grip on his massive shoulder.
The big orc wrenches free and releases a held breath, growing to a size more befitting his divine stature.
Before the remorhaz can strike again, Skaar balls his huge fists together and smashes its maw with a massive hammerblow. He follows with a punishing headbutt.
Brutal Strike: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Damage: 2d6 + 10 + 12 ⇒ (4, 6) + 10 + 12 = 32
Shove vs Touch: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Damage: 12 = 12
If the brutal strike hits, the remorhaz takes a -2 penalty to attacks for a turn.
When it attacks again, Skaar will spend an attack of opportunity to activate shoulder roll for an additional +2 bonus to AC. If the attack misses, Skaar gets a free attack.
Potential Shoulder Roll Counter: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (14) + 14 = 28

Not exactly.... It's more of a Calistria/Zon Kuthon kind of con. ;-)
You pummel the remorhaz, but it'll take more than a single blow to fell a creature this large. It retaliates by trying to close its teeth around your forearm.
Bite: 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 13 - 2 = 29 Damage: 3d6 + 18 ⇒ (3, 4, 2) + 18 = 27
If this hits, you'll take a -2 penalty to attack and damage rolls for the next 3 rounds.
Grab (if bite succeeded): 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (7) + 21 = 28
Remorhaz: 44pts damage
Skaar
Holy site outage Batman! Sounds like a good con. =P
That'll hit but the grapple fails.
The remorhaz proves a canny opponent and manages to grab a hold of the Unfailing Pillar's thickly muscled forearm.

We're online again! But for how long.... Out of curiosity, do you have experience with any other PbP forums? I'd like to have a backup option in case this happens again. Perhaps RPol, GamersPlane, or Discord?
Your strike narrowly misses the beast. It retaliates by attempting to grab you and fling you across the plaza!
Bite: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30 Damage: 3d6 + 18 ⇒ (3, 2, 6) + 18 = 29
Bull Rush: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27 (if bite was successful)
Remorhaz: 56pts damage
Skaar
I don't know a lot about other PBP sites but, funny enough, some friends and I were considering starting our own...
The beast leaves the Unfailing Pillar bloodied but he manages to find his feet before it can launch him away. With a roar he slams into it again.
Brutal Strike vs AC: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21
Damage: 2d6 + 10 + 12 ⇒ (3, 6) + 10 + 12 = 31

Skaar spits out a mouthful of blood and gives the beast a final kick before turning to address the fleeing woman.
"You in one piece?" he rumbles.
Skaar
"You raise those critters? Consider me impressed" Skaar says in disbelief.
"But you can thank me later. Can you get yourself someplace safe in the meantime? This 'Hungering Legion' isn't done with yet."
