Not cound down, but explode the same
The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially iven the importance of the occasion: “Start where it ll began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn.”
The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign f a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table. “Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat!” With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder. “Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born.
“But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives. Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix,” he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist. Shaine continues, saying, “Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation.”
Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, “Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six months ago, while I was mapping cave entrances in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on. A few days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the gillmen.”
Master Shaine hops to his feet. “Initiates, for your Confirmation, you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well.” With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the table and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.

Arriving at the inn, a figure in a mask and cowled coat stops.
This is it....., what a dump, sheesh.
Seemingly the 1st, he takes a seat in anticipation of the meeting.
So the Edge sent me way over here, i hope it's worth it, they've been a bit vague in their letters lately.
At the praising over dedication; Huh? I've done some sidejobs for Liberty's Edge, sure, but they're drafting me?

![]() |

A sound come rolling through the door..
EVENING!
...followed by the entry of a meat mountain, overbearing, menacing, but apparently in a good mood.
The Pig Paunch, eh? Where it all began, but with better food. Har-har!
Tetchy then listens to the introduction of Janira.
Such a pipsqueak. I'd better be careful that I don't accidentally step on her.
When the briefing finished, Tetchy looks a tad confused: So, we go to a cave, looking for a fish guy?
At least it's not a 'training run'
No knowledge...
Still in unbroken mood, he then turns to the silent companions next to him, extends a shovel-like hand and says, unsoftly, Wilbur. As if to indicate that that is his name.

![]() |

Locke extends his hand and shakes that of the bear-of-a-man.
"Wouldn't've took you for a Wilbur, you look more like a Maximus to me. Last one by that name i met was like that too. "Firebug", as i'm adressed often."
Guy's grip is firm, i'd rather avoid feeling a squeeze from him.
"So what place did you travel here from? The east, Varisia, elsewhere?"

A small gnome enters, standing on his tip toes to see over the tables he spots Shaine and hurries over. Dressed in earth tones the only splashes of bright color are his his brigt orange hair and the read and orange plumage of an exotic looking bird perched on his shoulders.
So, sorry I'm late. Did I miss anything? taking a seat at the table he lets out a annoyed sigh as he realizes he can not see over the edge. Squirming around in the chair he ends up kneeling so he can see everyone. Names Jubal, Jubal Early.

![]() |

Radahoum! the words come rolling out of his lungs, but only as a stopover from Bloodcove. Took us long enough to round the Big One.
Been long enough on the inner sea, though. Magnimar, Oppara, Almas! the city names are fired as salvoes from the bow.
When the gnomes comes in, the man focuses, sizing the gnome up.
Well met, Names! Despite the mix-up, Tetchy seems to take the gnome surprisingly seriously.
So, Firebug, Early, who else do we have?

Bowing to the others, Kodo introduces himself, "Greetings, my name is Masaru Kodo. Call me Kodo. I come from Tien Xia, from Minkai, from Kasai. My Emperor pledged assistance to the Pathfinders after some assistance provided to him. I am here to honor that debt. I was given this mission to learn the ways of the pathfinder and to learn how your various races and nationalities exist. I look forward to proving myself in battle with you all.". With that Kodo sits down again.

Standing as if a steel rod were bolted to his spinal column, Quinn listens attentively to the instruction given. Eager to show himself as a competent recruit, Quinn tries to find out some helpful knowledge from Janira or Master Shaine, as he doesn't know anything of Geography or History.
He raises a hand, "Quinn Van Hjorder of the Silver Crusade." He clears his throat, "Have these caverns proven to be dangerous in the past? What do we know of the gilmen society - are they generally combative, or can diplomatic means be effective?"

@ Zakon, all the more fun for the rp, my own char's name is based upon Loki & Arkham from Batman's Asylum. Thus =>Mischievous explosives nut. He's also a cha dump.
Were it not for wearing a mask, the others would notice Locke's eyes shifting with attention between them.
"Any specific origin to the family name, 'Hellborn'? It sounds chelish...."

![]() |

"Almost you say? Then don't mind me correcting your grammar, you were missing the 'you' in that sentence."
Cha dump and high int :P
But the mention of the tax liability caughts his attention.
Hushing a lower tone, he leans in to the man.
"Chelish tax collectors are indeed persistant, the inspector wouldn't happen to be one Markus Zathran, would it?"

Oh dear... Jubal mutters to himself. Shaking his head at his tactless comrades.

Wow, you have been in many places. I´ve recently joined the Society, about four yeras, but I hope I´ll travel as far as you. At least! Says Janira excited.
“On to the details of the mission at hand,” Janira says with an eager grin. “After reviewing my mission reports personally, Master Shaine believes it is no coincidence that each time they entered the caves it was during a full moon, so it is also no coincidence that you have been called here now, just a day before the moon is full again. We both believe that tomorrow night is our best chance to find out why these caves are important and what exactly the gillmen are doing in there.
“The caves we’ll be travelling to lie under the base of the Kortos Mounts. We’ll need to spend every minute of daylight possible to reach the caves by foot, crossing over the Cairnlands, taking the paths to Diobel, and finally making our way through the wilderness. With any luck we won’t run into any of the local inhabitants. Once in the caves, we’ll need to work together to explore and determine whether any gillman are present or have been recently. Keep an eye out for any other clues that might hint at the caves’ significance, too.”
Janira waits to see if any of you had any question before continue talking. “Now, before we head out, if there aren’t any more questions, we should take a moment to go through your gear and make sure nothing important gets left out.” The she open her backpan and start putting is content over the table.
As she puts everything on the table, she describes its uses t you, I have two potions of cure light wounds, so if I fall unconscious you can cure me, a potion of barkskin, and a wand of curte light wounds to cure who need it. A potion of feather step and potion of vanish because sometimes things exploration is dangerous, scroll of entangle, scroll of gust of wind, scrolls of mage armor, identify, obscuring mist. Wand of burning hands, acid, alchemist’s fire, holy water, to be prepared against swarms and undeads. Smokestick, tanglefoot bags and a thunderstone because always are fun to use. Sunroods to be able to see, antitoxin in case I´m poisoned. An of course, my armor, a hand to hand weapon, my whip, and a distance weapon, my light crossbow.
Janira gives you some time to talk between you about your strenghts and weakness before leading you out of Absalom to the Cairnlands.

![]() |

"Well, by first looks i've got a decent idea who's going to be where.
I'll leave the up-close to 'Wilbur' and Zakon. Personally i prefer a bow and...huhu...bombs. Don't worry, i'm careful with those.....most of the time."
A hint of enthusiasm sounds in his voice when he talks about the explosives.

![]() |

I bring with me the cleansing fires of the phoenix to make sure you all come back to the lodge in one piece. I would seem I have my work cut out for me.

![]() |

I don't get it, Tetchy says when Janira takes out the whip, where's the weapon?.
I want you to know, I've got this little fiddly-stick. I got if off this spindly Tien woman, who told me to just ask her when I needed it used. Didn't see her here. Do any of you know how to use it? Tetchy says, holding up a cure light wand.
Failing that, I've got some healing backup he says, showing a healing potion, something for a bar brawl showing a pair of brass knuckles. I learned my lesson after not being allowed into the opera with my blade, he says, pointing at a big piece of sharp metal standing near the door.

![]() |

I can hold on to the " fiddly-stick" for you and use it when needed.

![]() |

"Wait, you did what?....I've heard of a certain incident about a ruckuss in an opera building a few weeks ago, that was YOU? HAHA, the tavern tales you've inspired with that were both hilarious and epic."

Oh, and there is the fortress where one of my friends was taked captive for a few hours! She looks excited with every piece of information she tells you, as if all and everything she talks aboaut is the most interesting in the world.
As the party progresses deeper into the forest, the trees towering overhead begin to shield most of what remains of the day’s sun and the vegetation beneath grows denser. Janira pauses a moment and pulls out an intricate silver compass emblazoned with the Pathfinder Society logo: the Glyph of the Open Road. “I received this wayfinder when I successfully completed my Confirmation. Should we be successful on our journey, you will get your own as well.” She flips open the device and holds it in front of her; the initials J. L. are engraved into the inside of the device’s lid. After studying the compass inside for a moment, she remarks, “We’re on the right path. We need to keep heading northwest past those large rocks up ahead.”
Please, put yourselves in the map. And make a Perception check

Quinn listens bemusedly to his companions' bragging. "So, you've already been on a mission for the society? This...this is my first assignment." He tries to hide his nervousness, but it is obvious he's not so sure about his abilities.
As they trudge through the forest, Quinn does his best to keep a careful eye out for trouble.

GM, a suggestion - I've found it useful as a GM to put a link to the combat map in the 'Brief Description' box on the Campaign Info tab. That makes it easier to access the combat map.
