This is the official character submission thread for the First Step Series. I'm looking for 4-5 characters but I MAY start with 6 depending. No promises.
First Steps is meant to be an introductory scenario for new players to the PFS. It is three sessions long, and live can take around 8 hours total, so it should not be a crazy long campaign. If you stick throughout all three parts, your character will be level 2 at the end, a much better starting point for PFS play going forward.
Posting Frequency
I plan to progress the scenario every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, giving everyone time (including myself) to post actions or roleplay in between. Please plan to post/check at least daily, or you run the risk of missing out on asking an NPC a question or participating in a dialogue. You will be "botted" if you are absent for an extended period of time if you don't let me know ahead of time.
PFS
Please note this will be a PFS sanctioned scenario, and the following restrictions (and more) apply:
Level 1, new characters only
Core races
Core classes, APG, UM, UC (check the allowed resources list for extras)
Everyone starts with 150 gold
Max HP at first level
You do NOT need to pick a faction before First Steps
I recommend no archetypes, unless it includes changes to your level 1 abilities. GM discretion if you want one from level 1.
Note: I absolutely do not mind players new to PFS, but if you are please do take 10 minutes and read the Guide to Organized Play. It's free and a quick read!
Character Submissions
Unlike other threads, PFS characters do not always need a novella as a back story. Basically, we are all Pathfinders and members of the Society. We are gathered at the Grand Lodge in Absalom to get a mission from the Venture-Captain.
What I would like to see from your submission is 2-3 paragraphs describing your upbringing, why you came to Absalom, and why did you decide to become a Pathfinder. A full statblock is not necessary to apply, but you can add it if you wish (spoiler tag it).
Recruitment Window
I want to leave this open throughout some of the weekend to allow players to post. Plan is to close it sometime early Sunday at the latest, and I'll pick players later that day. Recruiting may close early based on amount of submissions.
Other Requirements AFTER we begin
I will need an email address to mail you your chronicle sheet, as well as links to the maps.
You should get a PFS number by the time we start

Deane Beman |

I would like to throw Thaddaeus Hawke's name into the ring...I'll need to adjust his stat block a bit but he looks like he might be fun to play.

GM Nel |

Hi, I'd like to dot my interest here, I want to spend some time making a character though so I'll probably get back to you tomorrow morning (Aussie, so that won't actually be ages away).
Not a problem. I would actually like to see something well put together than at the top of the thread :)

Justin Time |

Hello and allow me to introduce Justin Time
I am a half-elf barbarian exiled from a nomadic tribe and searching for a way to make a living
As a fighting enthusiast it seemed most reasonable that I could make a living by fighting my way through some adventures, after all every group needs a bodyguard
(In reality I do have a decent amount of player experience but never with PbP so this would be a fun experience for me)

Doctor Ruby Redhat |

If the turn-out for recruitment is substantial, I will consider running First Steps for a group as well after you've chosen a group. I'm a veteran PFS GM, but new to GMing for PBP, so it will be a good experience for myself. :)
If Im not picked for team 1 would love to apply for 2

![]() |

Sorry, my intent was not to derail GM Nel's thread. If I do, there will be a separate recruitment thread posted at a future date.
But I hope you guys are able to get in to this game, as I'm sure it will be a blast. :)
You are correct sir. I had no intentions of doing that either. I have respectfully deleted my other post lol!

Hi there! At my weekly Serpent's Skull game tonight, I mentioned this game to my group and two fellow players decided it sounded like fun and want to join. We might even coordinate and come in with inter-mingled character concepts, if that sounds like something you'd like.
How long is recruitment open? Is it first-come, first-served?

It's definitely a possibility. I would not have a problem with a small group applying together.
Recruitment is not necessarily FCFS, I would rather see some good concepts than a quick post (harder to do in 2-3 paragraphs, but that is on purpose). Current plan is closing the recruitment thread in about 2 more days. If I change the deadline date, I will post something with 24 hour lead time.

Sohali Haddad |

Hi, Jormungandr here, made a Pharasmin Paladin since I've been wanting to try out a more moderate/stoic paladin for a while now. If you want me to expand on anything or see anything that looks wonky rules wise let me know. Took me longer to write up in the end then I thought it would,, damn busy day :)
Edit: Did a reread and fixed up a couple of my more wonky sentences.
At the end of his training he was foisted onto a group of foreign explorers by his mentor and began a life of tomb delving and raiding as body guard and advisor to Professor Mortise, a member of the Pathfinder Society active in Katapesh. After working with the professor for three years Sohali grew curious about the organization that funded their expeditions and asked if he might join their number. The Professor, having grown fond of the young Keleshite, agreed and sponsored his trip to Absalom where a contact is to meet the young man and introduce him to the lodge.
Short and thin, Sohali’s dark skin, neatly trimmed beard and piercing amber eyes all mark him out as a Keleshite to those who’ve met his people before. His clothing currently consists of light robes coloured a deep purple and some well worn hide armour that he wears during his day to day activities around Absalom, typically only leaving the armour off when at rest. For weaponry Sohali wears a scimitar sheathed at his hip and carries a longbow and quiver across his back.

I present the Cheliaxian Luccinus de Concorezio #38110-5
Dets in Profile
He is more diplomatic than most warriors. He has chosen his faction already but is no way overt in his allegiance. I won't have any issues playing with Paladins or even Andorans.
I am in a number of PbP's atm and am a regular poster. This is a PFS concept I've wanted to try for a while.

Would you be inclined to allow a seasoned PFS player and DM who has already run these scenarios for a group? I am new to PBP myself, having only started playing in my first game recently. But I am enjoying it immensely and would love to find another. And a PFS game is even more to my liking.
I am quite capable of playing without using player knowledge. Besides its been a while since I ran these mods. What do you think? I was thinking about a druid build.

Part of the beauty of first steps is that they are the only PFS scenarios that allow for a re-play for credit, so I don't see why you should not apply. I will probably decide on a mixed group of experience, to allow new players to play but also have one or two experienced players who can help them make certain decisions.

GM Nel |

Excellent.
I'll go ahead and create a druid for your consideration. Running a home game tonight so you will see it tomorrow, if that is acceptable? I have not seen a druid mentioned yet, I think they are very fun to play, and I do not have have one in my set of PFS characters.
Yep I think recruitment will be open as per the original post. I'll have free time Sunday morning to sort through apps.

Ixiomar Voralius III |

Here's Ixiomar Erodel Albus Voralius III, Chelaxian Teleportation Conjurer. He's intended to act as a battlefield controller, buffer, and utility caster. He also has a host of useful knowledge based skills that the party might need. I hope it's alright that I'm using the Teleportation subschool from the Advanced Player's Guide. As far as I can tell it's not an achetype so I don't technically need to get your okay to use it, but I figured I would ask anyway. Let me know if you see any problems with the character that need fixing. Information is contained in the profile. The three paragraphs you asked for are contained in the backstory.

I am putting forward Idris Faine for this adventure. He is a native of Absalom and child of one of the Pathfinder Society's members. He is a Wizard that specializes in the Evocation school of magic. His background and basics are currently in his profile and I'm just finishing up the rest of his statistics now.

I hadn't noticed earlier that there was already a paladin applicant, if you'd like I can change Sohali over to a monk, or possibly a cleric, if you'd prefer no doubles class wise.
I PM'd him and withdrew my paladin. I am dotting for a gunslinger. Wouldn't be fair if I didn't tell you!

Just to let you know I am working on resolving my skill set. Made a post and waiting for answer.
Okay situation is solved. I can keep Craft Alchemy from my understanding. It and Gunsmithing allows the purchase of reduced price ammo rather than crafting it myself(which is not allowed). Does that sound right to you as well GM Nel?

Big OM |

Odol Thorgrimgun, dwarven fighter looking to satisfy his wanderlust.
Born in the city of Rolgrimmdur there was never any doubt that Odol Thorgrimgun would learn the art of war. As the son of two soldiers his faith was sealed. The young dwarf underwent a rigorous training regime and soon excelled in warfare. However to his parents’ disappointment Odol never focused on the aspects of leadership and a military career. He always looked to the horizon with passion in his eyes and took every opportunity to leave the city. The patriarch of his clan, his grandfather, however recognized what burned in his grandson and sent the young dwarf to a mercenary company.
Joining on of the many mercenary companies from Rolgrimmdur, he travelled to Andoran. Working the government he protected lumberjacks in the Arthfell forest. Bu t it was when the company was sent north to Falcon’s Hollow, he first met members of the pathfinder society. They were there recovering from an expedition to Darkmoon Vale and he was still protecting lumberjacks. It was here, he first understood what burned inside him, he wanted to explore. So he left the mercenary company and joined the pathfinders, when they headed back to Absalom.
Appearance and personality
Shorter than most humans around 4 feet, Odol is heavy build like most dwarves. He is shaven bald with a black beard braided into two braids decorated with silver jewellery, one symbolizing Torag and one clan Thorgrimgun. His face is rounded of with two piercing grey eyes and a big nose. Tattoos of dwarven runes decorated his hairy arms.
Having worked among the Aldorans for some time Odol has less resentment towards humans than more traditional dwarves, this tolerance doesn’t extend to other races. Tradition is not paramount to him but he still carries some of the dwarven culture close to heart. He will speak his mind and his anger burns cold.

Ash Windfinder |

Name: Ash Windfinder
Race: Elf
Class: Ranger
Hey there, I'm an experienced DnD player but relatively new to Pathfinders Society. My group at home play with the rules but don't delve much into the actual canon as we do a lot of homebrew. Currently we are doing kingbuilders however.
I'm new to Pbp and I like the idea of a shorter game, I like to feel accomplished in a quick time and I think a game like this will produce results fast.
I made this character originally for another pbp but my submission was declined, so please ignore the stats on the profile.
Many of his human friends had grown old and died while Ash still stayed young. The bond he had built with the druids growing up was stolen away finally when even the most venerable of the druids living to almost 150 years passed on. A different group of Wildwood Druids had now staked claim in the Verduran Forest and no one living could really remember what Ash was doing there in the first place. Giving him a bow and a pack they sent Ash on his way.
Making a menial living as a trapper along the Andoran coast, Ash has taken to enjoying the sea breeze and finds himself staring longingly at the ships that pass by on their way to Absalom. Much of his early life had been in the forest, but the idea of setting voyage across the inner sea with a ship and crew had become somewhat of a fond daydream.
Stowing away on a vessel headed toward Absalom, he decided to become a Pathfinder, his longing for adventure had become more than just idle pander and soon he was a member of the Society.

What is your name?
I am Solace Franzir, but my friends call me Sol.
How old are you?
By whose calendar? If you're going by the standard, I'm 18. If you gauge by street experience, then I am much older.
Do you have any personal goals? What are they?
At the end of a long journey, having a weapon at your side, a horse between your knees and a woman that loves you seems to be the best thing to live for. In the end though, just belonging somewhere is important. If you don't have a home, then anything else doesn't really matter. Although, finding my sister is a high priority.
Where are you from?
I grew up on the streets of Alkenstar. That was a long time, let me tell you.
Who is your best friend?
I would have to say that Vanderon, the woman that taught me how to use a gun and treat people with respect. She's not much older than I am, but she knows how to handle a gun and has my respect. So yes, she would be my best friend.
Who is your most potent ally?
I'm not sure I've found a true ally yet. I know I have a couple of aqaintences, but if I had to say then Vanderon would also be my more potent ally.
Who is your greatest enemy?
Grishnar, a half-orc thug who tried to press me into the service of his gang. Because I managed to escape, he took it out on my sister and her family. Her family's dead and I haven't seen her since. I want him just as dead.
Have you ever killed anyone? Who?
A couple of Grishnar's thugs, and some monstrous creatures in my journey from Alkenstar to Absolom
What is your most prized possession?
I'd have to say it's a signet ring given me by my mother last time I saw her. She said it was my father's, but I haven't found anything out about it yet.
What is your most closely guarded secret?
According to my mother, my father was a nobleman, and had no heirs when he and my mother were together. I guess that would make me some kind of noble, but I definitely don't feel it.
Do you owe any debts? What are they?
Nope, I've been lucky enough to just buy what I can afford. Although, I do fee a debt of honor to Vanderon.
Do you have any old grudges? What are they?
What is your single greatest regret?
Leaving my home and not being there when that thug attacked my family.
Of what accomplishment are you most proud?
Being able to join the Society.
