Barham Topperbush
|
Looks like Brak has Knowledge (dungeoneering) trained. Other than that, Barham and Scrumpy are ready to move.
| DM Feral |
Well-stocked bookshelves line the perimeter of the room, surrounding a small, central area with four reading desks. A low partition separates two more desks, which face away from the center of the room, toward the shelves.
Bright light comes from something on the far east side of the room.
A small figure, similar to the dead one found under the organ, hops up and down frantically when the party appears. He's saying something in a strange tongue.
Does anyone speak Aklo?
| Brak Gunddur |
Will Save 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
The doll's evil touch sends a terrible amount of negative energy into Brak, and he clutches his chest and bellows in pain before collapsing to his knees. Marla gasps and rushes to Brak. As she gets closer to him, he seems to grow stronger again.
Marla sacrifices 6 HP to keep Brak at 1 HP.
She casts a spell, and he grows stronger still.
Cast Lesser Rejuvenate Eidolon 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Barham Topperbush
|
No Aklo here.
Barham gasps as the doll's foul magic wracks the dwarfolon, straining his connection to the plane.
"Scrumpy! We had best take some precautions, I think we had better."
Placing his hand in the familiar spot on the eidolon's shoulder, Barham draws a scrap of tanned hide from his pouch. A swift gesture and a few soft words conjure an ethereal film of force around the creature.
Mage Armor on Scrumpy. Also added a block for him in the quick stats. When we're ready to move:
Barham and beast peek around the door into the adjacent room.
"We're not here to hurt you!" the halfling calls out. He points to himself, then to his companion, and begins gently petting the eidolon's fur. "Friends! Do you understand?"
Bazresh Izzakesh
|
Baz moves toward the creature, bow at the ready. He gets within fifteen feet before stopping and giving the creature a "I don't understand" gesture.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
Barham Topperbush

It's light, right? Light is good. Go towards the light.
Barham steps tentatively into the study, maintaining a safe distance from the creature. Standing on tip toes, he peers over the divider.
Detect Magic on the glowing bit, 3 rounds if possible.
Liadain Serelion
|
Liadain moves up to inspect the hidden doorway, listening at it and seeing if she can figure out how to open it. She keeps her rapier in hand, but attempts to seem non-threatening to the small, strange creature.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
| Brak Gunddur |
Brak nods to Marla after he is healed and stands, leaning on his axe for a moment, then stomping into the next room as though nothing had happened. He eyes the strange corpse as he passes.
Knowledge: Dungeoneering 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
What have we here?" he says.
| DM Feral |
Brak recognizes the creature for what it is along with its still living peer in the next room.
Liadain easily finds the catch for the hidden doorway, causing the section of wall to slide away. As it does, more intense light spills out into the library causing the little figure in the other room to cower behind a shelf. When the doorway is completely opened Liadain can finally see inside.
Burning, blinding light explodes from a large circular alcove in the southeast corner of the room. Within, an elaborate arrangement of mirrors, prisms, and similarly refractive materials stands carefully positioned by calipers, strings, and wires marking its precise settings. In the opposite corner dangles a three-dimensional mobile of various sized metal spheres. A complex frame surrounds the spheres. The length of the frame is etched with numbers. A broad work desk divides the two alcoves. On the desk are a number of scattered papers.
| DM Feral |
On the desk, Bazresh finds a journal. A quick browsing reveals an interesting entry. In addition there's a note.
Barham Topperbush
|
"There might be another way over here," Barham calls, pointing to the southwest corner of the room.
Bazresh Izzakesh
|
Baz turns back to room in confusion. Going back to the contraption, he attempts to move the sphere's order.

Fulgor-Copper-3

Liadain Serelion
|
"Ugh. That's better." Lia looks back through the doorway to see the reaction of the creeper.
Liadain Serelion
|
"Some kind of elevator?" Liadain murmurs, mostly to herself. She tries to see if the winch still works and, if it does, tries winding the chain up.
| Brak Gunddur |
"Huh. Dark Creeper. Thought they exploded when they died." Brak says. He shields his eyes from the light in the next room, and stays by the door while the others go in.
After the apparatus is examined, he stands looking into the hole.
Perception looking down the hole. 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16
Bazresh Izzakesh

Baz looks grim as he examines the chain. Looks like we'll have to climb down.
Does the chain count as knotted rope?
Baz peers down into the hole as well.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Marla Gunddur

Marla moves through the room, her eyes squinting almost shut. She examines the device, but seems to be doing so experimentally rather than with any knowledge.
Use Magic Device 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
After the light is turned down, she purses her lips and shrugs, before pulling her book out and making notes of the instructions and some details of the journal and the device itself while the others examine the hole.

So that's what plane Brak is from...
Given the way this is headed, anyone aware of special climbing rules for quadrupeds? Can't imagine a dog-monster would be much inclined to shimmying down a rope, but there are no rules as far as I can find that describe any sort of penalty, even in the ARG race builder.
Barham scratches his chin nervously.
"Surely this isn't the only, there must be another route," he fusses. "Why would a fellow ever possibly want to go such a way?"
He paces about the study, examining books on the shelf at random, hoping to find some other avenue to continue their search.
"Come on Scrump, help me look." The beast gives a reluctant snort, and pads after its master, half-heartedly nudging and pawing at various furnishings around the room.
Guidance'd Barham Aid Another and Scrumpy Perception to find secret doors. Probably just for show.
B aid Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
S Perception: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 1 = 16
Barham will toss Guidance on anyone needing to make a Climb check or similar. He will also volunteer a 50 foot hemp rope (currently carried by Scrumpy) should the chain not qualify as knotted.
Barham Topperbush
|
"Nothing," he sighs. "We'd better get some light down there, drop down a light source before we act too hastily."
From the pack tied to his eidolon's back, Barham fishes out a series of tools: a rope, a torch, and a flint and tinder. He ties one end of the rope around the bottom of the torch, then loops the torch around one leg of the tripod spanning the hole. A few strikes of flint, and the torch sparks into flame. Looping the free end of the rope around his arm, Barham slowly lowers the torch down into the hole, stopping about 10 feet above the platform. He adjusts the rope's position so that it dangles away from the chain, then secures it with a jumbled series of knots.
B, Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
If the light provides no significant new information...
Barham steps back, considering his handiwork with a frown. He turns to his eidolon.
"I don't think you can come with us, Scrump," he breaks the unfortunate news. "Go wait outside. When we're ready, I'll call you back."
A short performance of sorcery, and the beast disappears.
He also has a grappling hook, if that is necessary to secure the rope topside.
Barham Topperbush
|
It's not for climbing, it's for vision. I don't think any of us actually have light spells, so the intent is to suspend a torch within useful range of the platform.
Barham Topperbush
|
Any big folks got a second rope? I propose we harness up Barham and lower him 15 feet down into the hole. From there, he can summon a dolphin to check things out.
Liadain Serelion
|
Baz and I have darkvision. We'll just light a sunrod at the bottom.
Liadain follows Bazresh down the chain herself.
Once down at the bottom, Lia will light up one of the sunrods liberated from the barrel upstairs, holding it in her hand shielded by the buckler. Her rapier is, of course, in the other.
Barham Topperbush
|
Barham sighs, and carefully begins his descent.
Guidance beforehand, since he'd fall on a 1 otherwise. I'll roll it out to be sure.
Each successful move is 7.5 feet, he needs to make 5 of the next 20 rolls to get within 10 feet of the bottom without rolling a 1.

The summoner descends around 15 feet of the 40-foot chain. He removes his higher hand and goes to grab another link, but his sweaty palm slips on the cool metal. He flails desperately to regain his purchase, but the motion only shakes the chain further. His other hand and his feet slip off. He pinwheels madly for a moment, then with a terrified screech plummets to the platform below.
"Bwaaaaaaaaaa!"
Fall damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7
He lands with a powerful thud, but his backside absorbs most of the force for his bones and cranium. He rolls onto his stomach and pushes himself up onto hands and knees, gasping for breath.
Liadain Serelion
|
... Why didn't you just take 10? I don't get it.
Lia stares at the rumpled form of the halfling, confused as to how he managed to do that to himself. She offers Barham a hand up. "You need to be more careful, friend!"
She then peers into the murky waters that surround the platform.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Is the rope hanging taut above the water, or..?
Liadain Serelion

:) I'm generally less cautious when I'm not level 1... a stiff breeze could kill me at this point!
Speaking of - do you guys need a heal? Got a wand or want me to use mine?

"Seems too convenient," Lia comments dryly, but she nevertheless hops into the boat. (She'll be letting someone else take up the oars, though.)
"I think we should follow the edge of the room as much as we can."
Marla Gunddur

Brak climbs down easily, his armor hindering him far less than you'd imagine. Marla is able to make it down easily as well, and when down, Marla and Brak peer off into the darkness, looking for dangers.
