That is a humble bookstore. The massive glass halls of Morgrave University are many levels up and over.

Would you like to begin the short trip to Morgrave?

I just realized I haven't really described Sharn itself, rather relying on your meta game knowledge of Eberron. Sharn is basically made up of a large number of very big towers interconnected by a webway of bridges. Thematically I imagine it a bit like the planet Coruscant from Stars Wars but with a smaller, more fantasy scale. If you don't get the nerdy Stars Wars reference I'll describe it better when I have a bit more time later=)

While we're waiting here's a piece of artwork from the folks at wizards.

A Commmoner's View of Sharn

And a Sharn Art Gallery

The second page of the guide has a view of the university.

Nice=)

Yes. Although there is more to discuss, those topics are best covered outside city walls.

As you begin ascending the towering spires of Sharn you get a good look at both the people and the architecture of this marvelous city. A crazed medley of cultures and origins shows that Sharn truly is a place where anything goes, perhaps even more than its citizens realize.

Traveling along a thin air bridge between two high towers you suddenly notice the crowds around you have thinned significantly. From across the way five hooded figures emerge from an unlit arch and move towards you. They separate a bit as they approach and you see a muscular bald man in a monk’s habit behind them.

“The Savior will arise!” He declares in a maniacal voice, focusing his attention on you. “The Potents must be nurtured!” He hefts a warhammer as the robed figures draw daggers. “The ages crawl by and the time of Ascension draws near. Prepare for pain!”

The monk and his hooded henchmen move to attack.

Initiative Order
Elvombor +7
Liriel +6
Lyre +3
Monk +2
Hooded henchmen +1
If the Harbinger comes he may go when he arrives.

How high is the air bridge? This is for the escape plan in case things go badly.

If it's less than 50 feet, Elvom will be thinking about his Rope of Climbing for the entire party.
If it's more than 50 feet, Elvom will be thinking Feather Fall, probably on Lyre.

Elvom retrieves his Box of Caltrops from his Handy Haversack.

"Gentleman! May I interest you in a subscription to Magician's Quarterly?"

Elvom scatters the caltrops on the bridge between himself and the opponents and takes a step backward.

"Young Misses, we must prepare for battle." Elvom tells Liriel and Lyre in a firm but low whisper.

Elvombor Isebring wrote:

The bridge is 200ft off the ground.

Female Gnome Artificer 6

"Prepare? a craftsman from Zilargo is always prepared." The gnome replies.

She steps backward as she pulls out a wand and aims it at the monk.

'You're not going to harm my friends."

AT DC 20 the UMD roll is automatic. All three missles being aimed at our would-be prophet. Btw the featherfall spell is effecively a group spell if cast right.

Wand of Magic Missle 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 1, 2) + 3 = 10

Liriel wrote:

The monk snarls as the missiles strike home and raises his hammer threateningly as he glares at his gnomish assailant.

The monk takes 10 damage. Yes feather fall would work on the group as long as you where all standing close and jumped together.

"I think you and your friends want to take a nap actually."Lyre says as she points a finger at them

minions have 3HD the monk 8, 2 minions make will saves.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Two hooded minions collapse, snoring.

The monk waves his hands and casts a spell. A glowing, floating longsword appears and flies at Liriel.

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Two minions slap the sleeping minions to awaken them. The third still conscious one puts away his dagger and draws a light crossbow and loads it.

Male Elf Fighter (Archer) 5 / Wizard (Foresight) 1

Elvom draws his longbow and swiftly nocks an arrow.

"Bandits run when their leader is slain. Let us see if these are truly religious fanatics, or simple bandits with no sense of fashion."

If the leader monk is within 30 ft, this is a Focused Shot. Otherwise it's just a regular standard action ranged attack (-1 to hit).

Attack roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13

Oil from the box of caltrops goes unnoticed on Elvom's delicate elven fingers. The arrow leaves Elvom's bow an entire instant too early, flying wide from its intended target.

"Dorthonion curufinwë! Melwasúl fingon arnatuilë!"

Elvish (cursing):
Goblin Library Keeper! Warforged Skin Cream!

Female Gnome Artificer 6

"Glowing sword. Nice touch. Ouch!" Liriel yipes as the sword nicks her. "One should always give proper returns for what one receives.

And three more magic missles zap the monk.

3d4 + 3 ⇒ (3, 2, 2) + 3 = 10

Female Shifter (Razer claw) Witch (moon patron) 6

"I should warn you two I'm about to do something pretty disgusting." So said Lyre begins casting and suddenly a swarm of spiders come pouring out of her mouth (cast summon swarm) sending it in the direction of the monk

Swarm damage

1d6 ⇒ 6 (Dc 11 fort save of poisoned for d2 Con damage also suffers from distraction.

lol about the critical miss, I like your reaction. The monk takes 10 force damage.

The monk swings his hammer as spiders crawl all over him.

Attack of opportunity 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 -hit-

Swarm: Immune to weapon damage.

6 damage to the monk

Fort save against poison: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15 -success-

Fort save against distraction: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11-success-

The monk opens his mouth and unleashes a fan of black flames onto the swarm.

Breath Weapon: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 4, 4) = 12 fire damage. Ref save DC 16 for half.

Four of the minions trade daggers for light crossbows and loads them the fifth fires at Elvombor.

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 -miss-

Male Elf Fighter (Archer) 5 / Wizard (Foresight) 1

Disciplined under fire, Elvom takes a pair of rapid shots at the Monk.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27 Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

As the first arrow is loosed, Elvom notices the origin of Lyre's swarm.

"Ugh ... and I thought Spider Climb was bad..." Elvom mutters to himself as he reaches for his second arrow.

Attack 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Female Shifter (Razer claw) Witch (moon patron) 6

Swarm reflex

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

The swarm is somewhat reduced but still going (2hp's remaining)

Swarm damage

1d6 ⇒ 6 Dc 11 fort save of poisoned for d2 Str (con was a mistake last round) damage also suffers from distraction.

Distracton. Spellcasting or concentrating on spells within the area of
a swarm requires a caster level check (DC 20 + spell level

The monk takes 19 damage and looks close to collapsing. Actually I think the spider swarm is dead, on half damage they take 6 hp but they take +50% from area effects which would be 9 hps. The spider swarm in the bestiary has 9 hp. Also there are two Distraction rules in play: the one under swarms which is the one you are referencing and the one under universal monster rules that that says its a fortitude save or be nauseated for 1 round. I will use both but the roll was for the universal rule because in the spider swarm description their is a fort save for distraction. I dunno correct me if I'm wrong, the rules governing swarms alwasy seemed a bit odd to me anyway...

"Enough. This Ends Now." Liriel pulls up her crossbow and fires.

Female Shifter (Razer claw) Witch (moon patron) 6

Lyre attempts to finish off the monk with a lightning bolt aiming to get as many of the monks associates as possible

Damage

6d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 2, 2, 2, 5) = 16 Dc 17 reflex

The monk staggers as the bolt strikes him. -hit- 5 damage.

Monk Reflex save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 -success- 8 damage

The monk shrieks as lightning plays across his body and he drops smoking to the ground.

The bolt strikes 2 minions as well.

Minion Reflex save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 -failure- 16 damage the minion drops

Minion Reflex save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18 -success- 8 damage the minion remains upright.

One minion fires their crossbows at each of you the fourth, injured minion, moves to drag the Monk away.

Minion against Elvombor: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 -miss-

Minion against Liriel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 -miss-

Minion against Lyre: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 -miss-

Female Gnome Artificer 6

Liriel allows herself a wicked smile as she sees her bolt strike home and the effectiveness of the mages lightning strike. Her smile grows broader at the ineffectiveness of the minion's retaliatory strike.

"A word of advice." she offers. "Basically.... run."

On her turn she will use her move action to load a crossbow bolt. She will ready an action to fire at a free target at whoever decides to ignore her advice.

Male Elf Fighter (Archer) 5 / Wizard (Foresight) 1

Elvom admires Lyre's handiwork for a second, and then utters something under his breath.

Perception:
I hope the young miss honors her agreement concerning the egg. I do not want to be on the receiving end of that.

Elvom surveys the battlefield. If the injured minion is only helping his commander to withdraw, and does not seem to be doing anything hostile (i.e. reloading or aiming a weapon, casting a spell, etc.) then Elvom will avoid targeting him and the Monk.

Elvom will take two rapid shots against the minions targeting Liriel and Lyre.

Attack 1 (Minion targeting Liriel): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25 Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Attack 2 (Minion targeting Lyre): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20 Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

"Flee with your lives while you still have them!" shouts Elvom as he reaches for yet another arrow...

Both minions stagger when struck by your arrows but neither is slain.

The enemies will react to your advice on their turn.

Female Shifter (Razer claw) Witch (moon patron) 6

Lyre begins to cast another blast of lightning at the thugs

6d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 6, 2, 4, 3) = 20 Dc 17 reflex for half (holding to see how they act if they continue to attack she will blast them if not she will let them go.)

The minions gather their fallen and flee.

You gain 1 XP for defeating this threat and 1 XP for your RPing so far. You are now 3/15 to level 7. The monk left his warhammer on the ground, it is a +1 warhammer. Would you like to continue on to Morgrave?

Elvom asks Liriel, "How bad are your injuries?"

Elvom scans the battlefield to see if any innocents got caught in the crossfire. Finding none, he begins recollecting his caltrops and placing them in the box.

Even if there aren't enough caltrops to resupply the box, Elvom doesn't want anybody else to step on them accidentally.

"Just a moment while I clean up this small spill."

hehe.

The rest of your trip to Morgrave passes without incident. Your first sight of the University is an impressive one, glass halls, golden statuary and elaborate gardens. Morgrave has money at least, even if it somewhat lacks in respectable reputation. You make your way to the massive library where an elf woman in expensive robes organizes a pile of scrolls. "Are you looking for something in particular?" She asks as she waves at the towering bookshelves behind her.

Female Gnome Artificer 6

"My good lady elf," Liriel replies. "We wish to research an area of the Mournland known as the Field of Ruins. Particurlarly what history there might be of the last battle fought there."

Liriel wrote:

She waves her hand, beckoning you to follow then leads you deep into the maze of the library's overburdened stacks. "This is the single best record of the locations and events in the Mournland I know of." She says, pulling a heavy tome off a shelf and handing it to you. "Tales of the Last War." the cover reads. "Written by Keith the Adventurous Baker."

"A little overwritten, I'll admit." The elf says. "But the best factual account of that haunted land there is, hands down. There are modern maps and everything, very informative."

** spoiler omitted **

After a short search Elvombor finds Artifacts of Power: Legends of Ancient Devices while Lyre finds Ruins of Xen'Drik and the Treasures Within.

Would you all like to sit at a nearby table and read your tomes?

Sure

Liriel, Tales of the Last War:
This tome has an entire chapter dedicated to the Field of Ruins. It has a detailed listing of all the forces involved in that last great battle on the Day of Mourning as armies from each nation tore each other apart and stories about adventuring groups that have tried to either loot the equipment or retrieve the perfectly preserved corpses of fellow warriors from the ruins since. Apparently whatever the strange magical effect is in play the keeps things from decaying fades when objects are removed, weapons rusting and corpses rotting as soon as they leave the field. In addition warforged reavers and strange magical abominations assault any who enter making most reclamation teams decide the Fields aren't worth the effort. As to the reason for the battle it seems it was just another huge, pointless, and wasteful slaughter that became so common near the end of the Last War, soldiers killing each other more for the damage they could do to the enemy then to gain anything of strategic importance.

Elvomber, Artifacts of Power:
No mention of the Egg of Miracles graces these pages, though there are interesting bits about grand magical items such as the Axe of Cral and cursed legacies like the many Black Rings of Sabor. Nothing helpful for the current situation however.

Lyre, Ruins of Xen'Drik:
This tome may have been interesting if the writing wasn't so dry. It seems every tale within follows the same structure: great treasure found, excitement, treasure cursed, terror, everyone dies. After reading awhile you begin to suspect that this supposedly historical tome is a work of fiction, and a badly written one at that. If everyone who went to Xen'drik died why have there been so many adventuring bands that have gotten rich and successful from plundering its ruins?

Male Elf Fighter (Archer) 5 / Wizard (Foresight) 1

Elvom seems so engrossed in his tome that he doesn't notice that he is softly reading aloud.

Softly:
"The Staff of Jikan can keep time by hopping in place when left standing on end, and will reverse the flow of time when left standing upside down." Elvom reads softly. "Very interesting."
