It is mid-morning when you finally arrive in Rhukaan Draal. The goblinoid city was built around what was once a Cyran frontier town, and today it has grown into a sprawling goblinoid metropolis. The city appears as a crazy architectural tapestry; mud and timber huts surround ancient structures of stone and brick, interspersed with canvas tents and pavilions.

Most of the roads are bare earth, and few of the wonders or conveniences of Sharn are evident here. Within this ramshackle city, a single building dominates the skyline—an enormous tower of red stone that rises up from the very center of the city. This is Khaar Mbar’ost, the court of the Lhesh Haruuc, the hobgoblin king.

If it's okay by you, GM the Dragon Above, Xetovia would like to utilize both her Herbalist and Soldier Profession skills...

Herbalist: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21.

Herbalist: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26.

Herbalist: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15.

Herbalist: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10.

Herbalist: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18.

Herbalist: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24.

Xetovia (with help from Dol Durand) assesses the goblin military forces in the area, in terms of numbers.

Soldier: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16. Upon arriving in Rhukaan Draal

Soldier: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16. Upon arriving to Khaar Mbar’ost

Wishing that she had bought a handkerchief along for this trip, Xetovia takes in this unique sight that she had never expected to see in her lifetime- a city of the goblinoids. Dol Durand also seems less active, as if it had many new sights to witness for itself.

To the Bloody Market...

Keeping a wary eye out for any trouble, Xetovia asks Meridian, "What is the Bloody Market like, Meridian, and what sort of trouble could we expect over there?"

Rhukaan Draal - THE Bloody Market - Twenty Seventh Day of Dravago

Scroll of Magic Missile approved. Looks good Xetovia, add them to your sheet.

Xetovia can see that the forces arrayed here are not as haphazard as one would expect from "goblinoids". No surprise as the Hobgoblins are the most organized and military minded of the goblinoid races. This place is certainly safe from attacks by all but the most large and determined horde of "un" civilized goblinoids from the surrounding regions. The closer one gets to Khaar Mbar’ost the more frequent and competent the patrols are.

However, the trip to the Market leads away from that particular landmark not towards it.

Meridian shrugs at Xetovia's question and grins, "Thieves of course", is her response. She then responds in a more serious tone, "The Bloody Market takes its name from the violent haggling that commonly occurs among the goblinoids, although guards defend merchants if blood is actually shed. The merchants, mind you—the customers are on their own".

An ocean of tents and milling goblins fills the marketplace. The goods are not of the highest quality, but almost anything can be found here, including poisons and other goods usually outlawed in more civilized nations. The sheer size of this place makes you wonder if you'll ever find your contact there are more humans here than you would have thought before setting out on the trip.

Anyone care to buy anything? To find your contact Failin make a Diplomacy - Gather Information or Intimidate check.

There was a pretty good chance that they were going to be here a few days, so Ama was more intrigued in the idea of the writings that they had here. The organization of the city was surprising, and offhand, she thought that there were some lessons on organization that some of the cities she had been through that could be shared. There was still some minor things that she had to take care of, and being stuck in a place of knowledge sounded like a pleasant idea, since this town was so organized. "...I don't suppose there is a library?" she hazarded. "I would certainly love to spend the afternoon there if there are some other things that need taking care of that would place me underfoot." It had not quite occurred to her yet that she might not be able to read the language.

Thoughtful, she added, "Though, I would not mind acquiring another scroll, if we are passing through the market..." She also had to be mindful of not staring. She had not seen as many goblinoids as she did now, and it was different. '...What manner of accessory is that?"

And just out of curiosity, how much gold from our caravan job did we get as a party? If we were paid for all 27 days at 15 gp each, it looks like we each got 405 gp total.

In terms of shopping, other than replenishing some used scrolls or gaining more lower level potions/alchemical knickknacks, Xetovia should be fine.

In reply to Meridian's answer, Xetovia will drolly reply, "How charming... still it is good to know of what awaits us ahead.", while making certain to keep her Rutterkin's Sabre-hilt close at hand.

Upon observing the patrol count within the Hobgoblin city, Xetovia will rely upon her Autohypnotic training (taking ten, as it were) to memorize anything that she considers important to observe, just in case. Dol Durand's erratic motions also seem to be less obvious as the possessed entity residing within her left hand also seems to be observing things in its' own inscrutable manner.

The Thranish Vampire Hunter gives a nod towards Pink-Eye, Gauntlet, and the d'Orien cousins while adding in, "Haggling and bargaining, that might be best left to those much more familiar with its' intricacies though...".

Good to hear, GM the Dragon Above, about the 405 gp payment confirmation. ;)

Might also be worth keeping in mind that I didn't add in any of the loot/treasure amount from the goblins/bugbears (89 GP, 77 SP, and 1 Diamond plus some of the equipment, like the greatswords that Meridian mended into newness), unless it got somehow factored into our caravan payment- but I don't think it was though (I could be wrong, however).

I think that the 4500 gp might've been just from the old Cannith forge exploration plus the 400 gp from Lady d'Vown for everyone during the meeting with both Cannith representatives. Then there's the 405 gp from the caravan payment plus the loot from the bandits. ;)

At the quoted price, it was all Ama could do not to laugh in the merchant's face. Part of it was the amusement she was experiencing at haggling with a goblin, the wares arrayed on cloth over a couple of crates, with more of their stock behind them. As it was, she simply shook her head, the snort that slipped out before she caught her laugh saying how much she actually thought about the quoted price. "You're clearly not much of a merchant if you're charging that much for a scroll that you obviously can't use. I could make a scroll at a tenth of that price!" Narrowing her eyes, she examined the merchant's wares again, a snap of her fingers letting her see the inherent magic in the items they were selling.

"Good try, though. Twenty gold." Making no secret that she was unimpressed by the attempt to overtly gouge her, she smiled softly and made her Arcanix ring start to glow softly, via another minor use of magic. "You're not dealing with a clueless buyer. Try again." Truth be told, she was willing to go a little higher, but there was the possibility that she could get something good out of the deal if she kept up.

I think it was definitely for each person; of course, I was extrapolating from the 15 gp/day offer from the Caravan Master/Boss Quethhas and while it was made during the middle of the whole caravan journey, I figured it'd be easier to count the entire 27 days rather than figuring out the exact date of the offer and having the payment being calculated starting from then. ;)

No extra bonus for favored in house, you do remember that Failin was thrown out for participating in a smuggling ring.

The Goblin scowls at Ama though he does not fail to notice the imposing Minotaur so close to her side. Even in this bazaar of oddities Pink-Eye stands out, "Heh, fine then, 40 gold!"

Xetovia looks towards Meridian and whether by dumb luck or skill sees a sign in the distance for the Clenched Claw as a flag that was blocking her line of sight suddenly fluttered in the wind! Why it's a 10 minute walk from this very location.

There was a few seconds of contemplation as Ama narrowed her eyes at the offer weighing the potential of the availability of the spell and the use it was likely to see against the chance she would find it somewhere else. A slight exhalation, and she nodded, pulling her pouch off of her belt and withdrawing two coins from it before she set it on the table. The scroll was picked up with a polite nod and a smile.

"Let me know if you have any others you might want to trade for." With a grin to Pink-Eye, pleased at having made a deal, she tucked the scroll into the sleeve of her robe and made ready to return.

Then again, we also got from the bandits: 89 GP, 77 SP, and 1 Diamond (of unknown worth at this time); plus the two rusted Greatswords that were made whole by Meridian too. Any ideas on dividing them up as well?

While I couldn't really speak for either Caelan or Erix's players, might it be a good possibility that both d'Orien cousins could get mister caravan runner to agree to include Meridian on the whole payment deal (especially with a favorable word about our scaly dragon-touched "good samaritan" coming from both Pink-Eye and Xetovia?) ;)

Erix would definitely have that conversation.

Turning to Caelan, Erix informs his cousin of what he can recall about Fallin "He was kicked out of our House for being involved in a smuggling ring. So basically a direct slap in the face of everything we stand for. Let's be a bit wary with him. Oh, and we should probably not mention we're from the House that exiled him, at least at first. Which means we should also cover up our Marks."

Pretty sure the greatswords were mastercrafted. Unless I misunderstood the Dragon's description.

Meridian will not actually seek payment, and will be honestly surprised if offered any payment aside from a share in the sale of the greatswords.

Will be presuming that Meridian had carefully described the sign for the Clenched Claw to everyone in the party.

By sheer chance or divine providence, Xetovia spies a sign matching the description of the Clenched Claw that the Brass Dragon-Touched had previously mentioned to the group about. Looking over past Meridian's right shoulder, the Thranish Vampire-Hunter points over towards the direction of that now apparent sign and says, "Meridian, that sign that you had described to us- could that be the very one over there?"

You see that the Goblin has a few items of high quality that could well be magic, boots, a dagger, a headband, and a few more sets of scrolls. All are close at hand to his current position.

If it would be possible to spellcraft those 3 non-scroll items (boots, headband, and dagger) of the goblin's from where she was standing at, Xetovia will attempt to do so while keeping the direction and the content of the goblin's wares freshly memorized via taking 10 on her Autohypnosis (17 total). If not, Xetovia will opt to go towards the Clenched Claw instead, while still keeping this goblin merchant's location fresh in her mind.

Maybe a promise of sharing in the wealth by acting as our guide to the market then, if it's okay by you, Meridian? May have to see what everyone else thinks about such a proposal though...

Wasn't entirely sure whether those greatswords were, myself, but if so, then that's good to know; maybe they'll be interested buyers of those greatswords at the Clenched Claw? :)

I guess 672 becoming 96 gp for everyone in the party is also an option; alternatively, having the 675 gp be added to the 89 gp will net everyone 110.142857 gp while the 77 silvers can easily be divvied up to 11 sp for all seven party members. The diamond might come in handy as a spell component but not entirely sure on that yet.

Yes Meridian will get paid as Erix arranged for it. Sorry, those weapons were not masterwork, just not shoddy workmanship as one would generally expect of humanoid raiders. Those GP numbers seem fine to me Xetovia!

Xetovia:
The boots are Boots of the Winterlands. The Headband is a Headband of the Stout Heart (+1 to Will saves). The dagger you are not quite sure what it is. Can always come back to this tent of course!

----

Once Ama's deal is completed, the group heads towards the Clenched Claw with Erix's warning about Failin fresh in everyone's mind.

Pink-Eye is almost comfortable here, as he walks about he is subject to very few stares, or at least quite a few less than he receives in the human cities he has visited.

As you arrive the placard above the door displays a mummified ogre’s hand clenched tightly in a fist and nailed in place. This rundown tavern appears to cater to humans and members of the other common races judging from those exiting and entering. Unfortunately, the letter that Lady Elaydren left did not give a description of Failin and there are several human males here.

Make a Diplomacy check DC 15 to discover which of the human males here is Failin or pay a 2 GP bribe to find out.

Erix quietly asks a few of the patrons of the tavern for Fallin. Once he finds him, he informs the rest of the group. He'll hang back slightly, as he doesn't want to approach the exiled Orien right away.

Now that I've added up the numbers again, it looks like it should've been 109.142 gp actually (I'd blame it on the "calculator" birthed from the mind/consciousness/fruits of the late Steve Jobs)... but yeah, it might be easier all around to go with 110 gp and 11 sp for all seven of us plus the diamond and two regular greatswords that Meridian fixed up.

While the group makes their way into the tavern that apparently bears the moniker of the Clenched Claw, Xetovia will inform them of the three items that the Goblinoid merchant has for sale (the same one that got into a bidding war with Ama and Pink-Eye or an entirely different one?).

"The boots seem to be those of the Winterlands while the headband appears to strengthen one's willpower; unfortunately, I wasn't able to discern anything more about the dagger apart from its' ensorcelled nature."

As the party crosses past the entry threshold of the mangy-looking tavern, Xetovia has this incredulous look upon her countenance as she stares up at the mummified ogre's hand nailed to the tavern's name-placard. That severed hand- it couldn't possibly be real... could it? At any rate, Dol Durand doesn't seem to give any indication of noting the gruesome display, apart from an involuntary clenching motion which happens only once.

perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 or heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11. To see if that mummified hand is real or fake.

The question of whether or not the mummified Ogre hand was genuinely real was enough to preoccupy the Thranish Vampire Hunter's attention while the party settles into their tavern seating arrangement, if any, as Erix begins his discreet inquiries about Failin.

Meridian shrugs delicately as she travels with them to the Clenched Claw, "The headband sounds interesting. I can take a look at the dagger later if anyone is interested in it. I do not have a lot of experience with enchanted items, but perhaps..."

At the Clenched Claw, Meridian approaches the bartender to order a drink for each of her new friends. Dropping the required coins on the bar she returns to the others with the drinks in hand and a tooth-hidden smile, holding the mugs out, "The road is a thirsty place, will you join me in clearing some of the dust."

Grabbing Pink-eye's arm gently as he passes, Gauntlet stops him for a moment.

"I will remain outside in case you need me I think. My kind tends to attract the wrong attention in such places, and bartenders tend to dislike non-paying customers taking up seats. Just call out if you need me."

Standing outside the external door and to the right side, he keeps an eye on any trouble possibly approaching and listening to the inside as best he can under the circumstances. Such behavior seems to be very normal for the metal man.

Caelan nods and says, "Thanks for taking a look, Xetovia. Listen, I'm gonna stay outside with Gauntlet. Two sets of eyes are better than one - can only look one direction at a time, after all." He pays for a mug of beer, winces at the mediocre taste, and says to Erix, "Keep these folks from making more enemies, will you, cuz?" with a smile. Then he steps back outside and takes up a spot on the wall near Gauntlet, alternating between sipping his disappointing beverage and looking up and down the streets.

"Spot anything, my friend?"

Pink Eye wanders along until they find the tavern, a run down affair and he deeply chuckles at it but then frowns at the ogres hand saying no living thing should suffer that. Then he nods to Gauntlet and Caelan on keeping a look out saying If we get in trouble I will give you a call. At last Pink Eye walks in and looks around putting himself in a corner and taking the mug of drink with a smile and a nod.

Still proud at her negotiation regarding the scroll, Ama was upbeat as she followed the others to the tavern until she saw the sign. Then, she visibly dimmed as she reminded herself of where she was, looking up at Pink-Eye to nod in agreement to his statement. She was remaining near enough to Xetovia once they got inside, but her attentions were being taken by the level of cleanliness— or lack thereof that was assaulting her sensibilities. A cantrip cleaned her chair and the immediate area of the table, and even then she was uncomfortable with their surroundings. At least she was not thirsty, and for that she was thankful, as she doubted she would be able to drink anything in here.

The Goblin who negotiated with Ama does indeed possess the items of "interest". "Come back, I shall be here but I cannot ensure that my most valuable trinkets will be!" he calls out as you all make your way to the Clenched Claw.

---

Indeed, the hand is no fake Xetovia, some creature paid dearly for the ambiance of the Tavern.

Caelan and Gauntlet see nothing out of the ordinary, well not too out of the ordinary considering the environment.

The crowd inside is tight packed, a few of the Hobgoblins give the humans among you dirty looks but wide berths as Pink-Eye towers above all those who dwell within.

Meridian purchases drinks for the group as Erix begins to work the crowds. The drinks are the not the swill you would have imagined them to be, in fact, the ale is of higher quality than some of the establishments that sell such wares in the Cogs of Sharn.

A drunken Kobold approaches Meridian an amorous look in his eyes,

Draconic:
"Yer tha most beautifuull creature I've ever seen!"

Erix returns as the Kobold sways drunkenly before Meridian.

He turns to Erix at the mention of Fallin,

Draconic:
"Oh man what a guy he is, my favorite human".
He lets out an incredibly large belch and grins at Meridian.

Fallin is seated at the far end of the establishment, drinking with a pair of Hobgoblins.

A polite nod was given to Meridian for the drink, though a dubious eye was given to the mug and its contents, a few seconds of concentration at least reassuring her that the mug was safe to drink from. Its contents... Well. Picking up the tankard, Ama took a tiny sniff, then a sip, expecting it to taste like road dirt mixed with stale donkey urine. To her surprise, it actually did not taste bad, but she was not sure about drinking more. The besotted Kobold professing his attraction to Meridian was straining her ability to keep a straight face, so she looked at the others to see if anyone else was able to understand what was happening.

Erix is opting to hang back atm. He doesn't want the first person Fallin sees to be a member of the House that exiled him.

That basically leaves Xetovia or Ama to talk to him then...otherwise someone will need to come get Gauntlet to talk to him if neither wants to do it. NOTE: No diplomacy should be needed here...yet. He should be expecting us? Right?
