Posting Conventions and Campaign Info:
I wanted to take a moment to put up some standards for posting, so we are all on the same page with how we post to make things as easily readable as possible, and also to give you some campaign specific information to help us as we move forward.

First, for RP posts it tends to be easy to follow certain standards. Descriptions and actions can be described through normal text. Dialogue should be bolded, thoughts italicized and any out of character commentary using the ooc tags. Information for just specifc people, or the results of skill checks will be hidden in spoilers. We operate on the honor system with those.

An example of the information given above. I can't imbed spoilers in a spoiler, so I just put those in brackets The vampire crept slowly into the room, considering his victim. Or more accurately his victim's throat. His mind seemed to echo every pulse within calling to his hunger. Finally my thirst will be slaked... Yes, you will do nicely. Leaning over the prone victim, his voice comes out in a low almost soothing whisper Sleep now, embrace being mine...

<spoiler>Perception DC 20 You wake feeling a presence looming over you.You may act in the surprise round.</spoiler>
<spoiler>Will Save DC 16 There is a sensation of control washing over you but you manage to shake it off.</spoiler>

Hopefully that gives a fair idea of how posting should be formatted so that everyone can communicate effectively.

I try and be a very responsive and flavorful DM for combat situations, taking your rolls and giving a little fluff to them to add to the dynamics of the situation. When we are on initiative count, I find it easiest to post in any order with any applicable rolls(attack and damage, even if you don't know if you hit for instance) as well as a backup plan if there is any chance of your main one getting disrupted. Ex: I strike the goblin next to me, if it is already dead then I charge the bugbear.

Once the next person in initiative has posted, I will create a combat post of fluff and results for him and anyone else who has already put up their actions who goes after him. Basically, combat in play by posts already take time, so I am looking to avoid any extra holdups because the person who goes second happened to be on an hour before the guy who goes first, and now we are waiting another full day for his post. Obviously when a surprise event happens in combat I will pause to let anyone who has already posted modify their actions, but it should make normal round by round combat go faster.

For the campaign itself, I feel there are two things that are important in advance. First, I wanted to make sure that everyone was able to access the google docs. I'll likely use a spreadsheet on there to act as a battlemat for us and will put up handouts and maps there for everyone, so if someone can't get to it let me know so I can come up with a better workaround. I use roll20 for other things and it could be interesting to try and make use of for a PbP since it would give me a lot more control over things and has some nifty features, but since it requires registering(though its free) I didn't want to assume that. Just a possibility.

Secondly, and more story-wise, there is a behind the scenes mechanic that will be taking place during this campaign and I wanted you to all be aware of it even if you never see the actual numbers. I will be keeping a running tally of things called 'victory points' that essentially are how well you are doing on your current large scale goals. Because this overall campaign is such a sandbox adventure, and it never really requires you to complete any specific tasks this gives me a method of keeping track of things you have accomplished and will let you feel some benefit come from tasks that in other stories might turn into questing for loot or experience.

As an example: Should your over arching current goal be to defend a village against a gnoll incursion, then you may gain 1 victory point for spending time training villagers, 1 victory point for somehow securing them better equipment, 2 victory points for bringing in military reinforcements, ect. When the time for the massive battle comes, the number of victory points the group has will play a role as modifiers or alter the landscape of the battle completely. Basically, anything you guys are doing can have an effect, positive or negative, on over arching events. There will be large scale battles and story changing events, not all of which may go your way, but win or lose the war continues.

I want to give you all a setting, and feel free to post in ICly. As you feel you get your character's stats completed, please let me know and I'll look them over and give any comments. While we do that, it should be a good chance to describe your characters to one another and have a little 'get to know one another' time.

At first, it feels as if you must be dreaming. The sense of dislocation, the giddiness, the feeling of flying rapidly through space, all add to the unreality. Where are you? What were you doing a moment ago? These thoughts arise in your mind, as if you were half-awake, on the borderlands of consciousness.

Perhaps you have been knocked senseless, or poisoned with some hallucinogenic drug. One thing is certain; you are in a strange place and you do not remember how you came here.

What you can see before you is as clouded and vague as the contents of your mind. There seems to be nothing but mist, swirling in eddies around you, with a suggestion of huge shapes briefly glimpsed through it. The mist is cold on your face and with a start you realise that this is no dream. You are here, physically here in your body, fully dressed and carrying your equipment. There is wet grass beneath your feet. You feel no pain, so it stands to reason that you were not knocked out and dragged here. How, then, did you come to be here?

Alone in the mist, you wonder why you do not feel more afraid. There is a presence here, something old and comforting, like a childhood memory. The mist begins to clear. In the faint light of a new day, you see the huge forms that you glimpsed before. They are megaliths – standing stones that tower over you, set into the form of a circle. This place is achingly familiar to you, yet you have never been here before.

Through the thinning mists, you see that you are not alone. There are others here, and by the look of them, they are as surprised to find themselves here as you are.

The stone circle seems to be about 30ft across, each of you are standing before one of the large 12 megaliths.

Perception DC 10:
Off beyond the circle of stones you can hear the lapping of waves against rocks.

Perception DC 15:
On the face of each of the stone megaliths, mostly obscured by moss you notice a faint carving. Closer inspection reveals it to be marking out the stars in a constellation.

Knowledge(Religon or Arcana) only if you made the perception above:
The megaliths are carefully aligned so that the constellation inscribed on each would match up with the stone on midsummers day. It is likely that this place has some sort of ritual importance.

Upon closer inspection Selene looks.. Well weird if you've never seen a Samsaran.. Regardless she stands roughly 5' tall, very slender almost frail looking.. Rusigari looks around himself curiously.

What just happened? This places feels...familiar somehow. But how? I'm certain I've never been here before.

His line of thought is broken by a loud yelling, and then a quieter question.

"Me? I am Rusigari. Rusigari Rashiska. Do you know where we are...ehm, 'BadAxe', was it?

Rolls:

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Kn. Arcana: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

So we're going to do everything in this one thread? Usually there's a Discussion thread (for OOC communication, info dumps, and so on) and a Gameplay thread.

Liberty's Edge

Once I begin the actual event I am going to move over to a gameplay thread and this will just be used for OOC discussion. This is essentially a way for us to introduce the characters and get to know each other while stats are still being hammered out. Basically, once we move over to the game thread things will be real and have consequence. While here, if I notice you've over spent on skills and you end up dumping perception even though a roll has already been made it doesn't matter.

A proud, yet confused looking armored half-orc looks down at its hands, flexing them, oblivious to his surroundings. What... am I? His eyes look up his arms and down his body and then again at his hands. Something tells me... half-orc... what does that mean? The hands touch the armor he is wearing. I... feel... reborn?, he takes a breath. I am alive. He becomes aware of the sound of nearby voices as he touches his pointed ears. I hear... I am not alone... But who am I? A name... it's... "Tenoch... Tenoch Itzcoatl," he says his hands going to his toothy mouth in shock at the sound of his voice, before finally falling to his sides. Where am I? These others don't seem to know either. "Is there any here who can tell us where we are? And why we have been brought to this place?" From where? Where do I come from?

Any suggestions on which star sign I should follow? I see we have two Spectre's, a Delver, and a Great Wolf. I'm currently pondering choosing between Unicorn, Firedrake, or Reaper. I had Rose on the list too, but it didn't seem to fit as well with the Oath of Vengeance. I'll probably narrow my preference further as I ponder their meanings, but I'm willing to listen to outside opinion.

Aside from that, I think I'll only need to purchase equipment and that should finish things.

I'm starting to comb through stats now to try and verify everything, hopefully I can help us with some momentum once everything gets approved. Because this game is so sandbox, don't be afraid to use your own momentum and either chatter to discuss plans, or move things in your own way, its very hard to take this story 'off the rails'. Players devising their own plots or things to investigate or ways of doing things is strongly encouraged.

Also, Alexander, I sent you a PM regarding some of your character options, please get back to me when you are able so I can finish off approval of him.

I had a quick look at our party composition... So we have three (or four if you count the companion) front line fighter types (since it looks like the oracle is going that route) and two arcanists (one which will shift into a theurge type thing)? Yikes, lol.

@Tarlane - Regarding Google docs: I can access/modify them at home no problem (I use Chrome there). At work (using IE), I can 'access' it (although it doesn't look pretty all the time) but I can't modify.

I will be adding my own animal companion next level, a tiger i think, so meat shields shouldn't be an issue, Boon Companion at 5th will make him even more a threat.. Both me and the oracle should have ample healing to keep everyone up as well.. This character will have caster levels equal to hd after Esoteric Training feat and will only be off 1 level of casting on her druid side, so between her, a full divine oracle and a full arcane sorc we should be gtg with magical firepower..

As for google docs im in the same boat as Tenoch, i can fully access it at home, but can only look at it at work, can't modify it.. With that said we could always be botted on combat maps while at work..

Liberty's Edge

I know the oracle is looking like he was planning on some mounted combat, but as with many cleric-types he should be able to hold his own up there but I imagine it won't be as much of his focus. However, with the idea that selene will be able to wildshape at some point you guys definitely have a party that should be quite survivable able to hit pretty hard in battle when you need to. It should be a pretty effective group.

We might get into trouble against flying opponents or archers that aren't close by though. And then there's all the meat shields trying to maneuver in around each other in order to attack some poor soul.

Maybe at 5th level I should choose the mount instead of the weapon bond, then we can have three big nearly-always-there animals (four if you include the wild shape)! lol

We should be alright vs flying stuff by the time we're high enough to fight that sorta stuff.. I would pick the weapon bond.. Its just too good.. FYI i might use wildshape for flight/defense but i wont ever be an upfront fighter.. Ill prob take natural spell at some point down the road for casting while shaped.. Ill be like 9th before i have wildshape so.. Her main expertise will be blasting and ccing stuff till they cry..

Male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) HP: 7/7, AC: 13, +6 Initiative

I'd suggest the Weapon Bond too. Look at it this way, we've already got enough frontliners (as you said), and the Weapon Bond will let you pick up a bow out of a trash can and use it to kick ludicrous amounts of ass anyway.

I suppose abjuration wouldn't be bad either..

That is fine with me, I'm still going through characters as the work day permits and I'll make that adjustment as I skim over stuff. @Sumak: You might want to consider a weapon cord for your mace, or using a light shield instead of a heavy so that you'll be able to cast spells without difficulty if you happen to have them both equipped. With the first you just let go of the mace and snag it again after casting (although a dangling heavy mace may look weird), the second you pass the mace to your shield hand and grab it again after casting (non/free actions). Then again, I suppose you could just cast your spells first and then draw the weapon while your beast moves into a good charge position or attacks. Are you considering a reach weapon, like a long spear, at some point?

Liberty's Edge

Alright guys, I'm back up and running now so I'm working to get you some information and answers, I should have my notes for the characters soon.

Liberty's Edge

Alright guys, here are some notes on your characters to get everything taken care of stat-wise. Lets try not to let the RP drop off while we are doing this, how you all function as a group is going to be important so I'd like you to know each other ICly before we move forward.

Selene:
Your prepped spells are slightly off- You should have 2 + 1 specialized school, none of the three you have prepped are air spells(it doesn't look like you have any level 1 air spells in your spellbook.
It looks like you purchased your scrolls at half-price(assuming you prepared them yourself). I'm fine with that, I just wanted to verify that money calculations aren't off somehow.
Otherwise, it looks good, I kept writing down questions and finding the answer somewhere else on the sheet.

Rusigari:
As a rakshasa spawn tiefling you get either infernal or abyssal as a free language so you still have one language available.
You've only spent 12 gp from what I can see on a pathfinder kit, so go ahead and finish buying your equipment.
Otherwise, I don't see any problems.

Tenoch:
Half-Orcs get a +2 on intimidate checks, so your intimidate should actually be +9
I'm not seeing where you are getting endurance and diehard from. You only have one feat to take, orc ferocity is similar but not quite the same as diehard.
I wanted to make sure you realized that the spike chain is exotic so you are not proficient with it and would take a -4 to use it.
You should have 2gp 7sp left over from my calculations

Sumak:
Your spells look a little off. You should have one more 0th level spell, and your 1st level castings per day should be 4 instead of 5. Its correct in daily resources.
Bluff should be a +9(don't forget your trait)
I know you are planning on using lances but don't have one yet(or proficiency) I take it that will come later?
I don't see the actual adventuring kit you picked up, ultimate equipment has a bunch of kits but that doesn't seem to be among them.
Survival isn't a class skill for animals, so it would only be a +2
Chain shirt barding for your animal companion would cost 200gp, even without the adventuring kit you only had 146gp left.

Alexander:
Your skills are a bit off. I only see two ranks used(you have 3) and I'm not sure where the profession sailor comes in since you don't have heart of the wild.
Optimistic Gambler is actually a campaign trait from back when it was 3.5. At that point traits were made to replace a feat rather than be a half-feat.
I see you bought studded leather, a great axe and an amentum. I'm not sure what other gear you planned to make use of if you can finish filling that out.
You get either a +1 to HP or skill points, assuming that barbarian is going to be your favored class
For your attack bonuses you should have them be 1 higher(+6 or +3), I think you forgot your base attack bonus.
The damage with the greataxe would be 1d12+7(you round down), and the amentum adds strength so it would be 1d6+5
Your CMD should be 18 (10 + str + dex + bab)
Your will save should be -1, your wisdom is negative and you don't have country born
Perception should be 3, -1 wisdom, 1 rank, +3 class skill
Acrobatics is only 1 with armor check penalty
Intimidate should be +3, only a -1 cha
Please do what you can to clean up the character sheet, its pretty rough to try and find stuff, the skills in particular have a lot of information that seems off, but it looks like there are a lot of leftovers from past characters.

Hp 52/52 AC 26(26) / 18 / 22 (+5 Perc; +0 Init; Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +6)

DM:
yes the mounted combat will come starting with the next level. and i have fixed both sheets.

Male Tiefling (Rakshasa Spawn) HP: 7/7, AC: 13, +6 Initiative

I had already picked a second language, Draconic. Seemed thematic and I find it comes in handy fairly often as well.

I also have NO CLUE what to spend my gold on. Can't wear armor, a weapon doesn't seem worthwhile (my best bet would be a crossbow, but Acid Splash would be a much higher to-hit TECHNICALLY and similar damage), and everything else is too expensive.

Wait. Yeah, might be good if I snagged some CLW potions for the party. I've got enough for 5.

Hp 52/52 AC 26(26) / 18 / 22 (+5 Perc; +0 Init; Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +6)

Just to info you all that i am leaving tomorrow until Monday in order to attend a friend's wedding. I won't be able to post more then once per day during that time.

Fell free to DM NPC Me

Liberty's Edge

Rusigari, you get one additional language because of your intelligence mod. Common and Infernal were free, you have a +2 intelligence mod, so draconic is one and you have another. For gear, a crossbow isn't a bad idea, but you are right about acid splash. However, potions or scrolls could be good. You can cast any scrolls off the arcane list, so you can get some spells you don't know to add a little versatility.

Thanks for the heads up about the weekend, Sumak

Oh, I also know where Tenoch is getting that extra Feat from, probably. There's an alternate racial trait (Shaman's Apprentice) that grants Endurance as a bonus Feat. Replaces Intimidating too, so that's where the math on his Intimidate skill comes from as well, since he won't be getting that +2.

Liberty's Edge

Ahh, I totally missed his variant racial abilities. It looks like that covers pretty much all the issues I had listed.

barbarian's don't get much starting gold so the basic weapons and armor were all I could afford.
I got rid of the profession sailor.
Added favored class bonus to skills for 4 skill points
I counted in Power attack for my basic attack sense I am going to be doing it about all the time. Not sure what I should be rounding down.

Everyone will start with 300 gold, not the standard for each class.

You should be rounding down your STR bonus to damage. When you use a weapon with both hands you apply 1.5 times your STR bonus as damage. If you have +5 STR bonus it would get to +7.5 bonus damage. This is what you should round down.

Your sheet does say that your STR is 20, giving a modifier of +5. Anyway attributes are counting 26 points, if i'm not mistaken. Something is amiss.

Alexander:
As Aetherni said, when you two hand a weapon you use 1.5 strength so your normal damage would be +7. If your stats were already including power attack, then with a two handed weapon you would add +3 for it, so your damage bonus would be +10.

Also, as mentioned everyone started with 300gp for purchasing gear, so you should be alright to pick up some more stuff.

Things like escape artist still being in the skill list with no info next to it are part of what has it hard to read and there are a lot of little things like that. Makes it hard for me to find information when I will need it.

Let me know when you finish clearing up the other issues and I'll give full approval.

Selene:
Looks good now. If you are switching over to conjurer, did you want to leave your spell focus in evocation? Evoc certainly has a lot more spells that require DCs(though now that the pit spells are there, that has caught up some) but I know what a power house a druid can be when they make use of summons and augment summoning can be pretty useful. Just asking in case you were intending to go that way and simply missed it.

Indeed, as Rusigari mentioned and as you've seen, I took three alternate racial traits for Tenoch. Chain Fighter replacing the regular weapon familiarity (for flavor rather than the proficiency.. spiked chain isn't that great), Sacred Tattoo replacing ferocity (which wasn't as useful with Diehard), and Shaman's Apprentice replacing the Intimidate bonus.

As for the 2 gp differential, I'm not sure where that comes from unless I posted the wrong costs for some items. I'll throw it back in then though. I was thinking on dropping one of the Chakram anyhow in order to have a little more cash on hand.

So I just need to choose the starsign and then I'm complete.

EDIT: Chose Firedrake and sold the extra chakram, so now at 3.7 gp.

Looks good for me Tenoch. We're getting there stat-wise for everyone, but all the IC stuff has sort of died down. I do need you guys to be somewhat self-directed since I can only do so much to nudge things forward when there aren't any NPCs present.

Ah. I thought we were just getting everything finalized here before we moved back to IC in the Gameplay thread. Lessee if we can get that ball rolling again in that case.

Selene addressed the group.

"Well im here for noone's amusement.. Do any of you reconize this place? These huge stones here are called Megaliths and they each have a carving representing one of the constellations.. The megaliths are carefully aligned so that the constellation inscribed on each would match up with the stone on midsummers day.. This is most likely a site of some ritual importance.. Knowing all this ill ask again if any of you reconize this place, or have ever heard of such a thing."

Rusigari thought for a moment before replying.

"Hm. This place DOES feel very familiar somehow, it's true. Though to be perfectly honest I can't seem to recall WHY that would be or what purpose this place would serve."

Thinking on it, Rusigari idly activates his innate magical senses to inspect the standing stone nearest him, in the hopes of finding some clue to its nature.

Detect Magic. Three rounds of study, so should give me number of auras and the strength of each if there's more than one.
