Only a handful of other Pathfinders, most of them initiates, walk the halls near the office of Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin, where you have all been called by the Venture-Captain.

Upon your entrance, he gives your group a distracted nod towards the comfortable chairs in his office. Valsin is seated behind a well-organized desk, scanning a recently printed Chronical, with one hand tapping his finger against an envelope decorated with swirls of gilt and ornate paper-cutting. The tap-tap-tap of his finger seems loud in the eerie silence of the nigh-deserted lodge.

Valsin breaks his silence without taking his eyes off the Chronicle in his hand. "Can you believe this place? I've been in more populated crypts. Sheila's requisitioned so many agents for the things going on in Varisia I begin to wonder if it's not all some Aspis plot to leave us without competent field agents here."

At that, Valsin lowers the Chronicle and looks each of you over with a sigh, as if debating with himself whether you fit his internal calipers of 'competent'. He nods slightly to himself at the presence of Saki and Kardak-- devotees of Shelyn ought to manage this sort of mission alright, Valsin thinks to himself-- and smiles a sort of toothache smile at the looming form of Krunch, who-- thank all the gods-- isn't crushing any of his finely crafted office chairs.

"I suppose I'm lucky," and Valsin's tone is just dry enough that it's obvious he considers his luck mixed, "that you lot should each be available having just finished your own most recent assignments. I have a task for you, and it's.... a bit outside the normal thing I would ask Pathfinders such as yourselves to do."

He holds up the beautifully-decorated envelope. The intricate and looping script on the front reads An Invitation, with the letters spiraling and curling around the heraldic emblem of the Blakros family. "I need you... to attend a wedding."

Valsin leans back in his chair, turning the envelope over in his callused hands. "I'm sure I don't need to tell any of you who the Blakroses are... Some of you--" he nods at Alan, "--have been of service to the Society in dealing with the Blakroses in the past. That business with that accursed Mwangi relic. Because of field efforts like that, as well as political maneuverings going on at a level agents such as yourselves are not privty to, the Society is becoming useful to the Blakroses... and vice versa. We want this state of affairs to continue, and, indeed, to proceed to an ever-closer alliance: with the wealth and resources of the Blakros family allied with the skill and cunning of our field agents, the future for the Society is bright indeed."

Valsin clears his throat. "In two days, Michellia Blakros is getting married to the former Hellknight Damian Kastner, and because of security concerns, we only got our invitation this morning. We have a great deal of interest in this wedding-- the Society played a part in seeing that these two young people met in the first place...

“The wedding is taking place on a secluded summer retreat on nearby Pariol Island, which the Blakroses own. There are two boats heading there before the first wedding festivities. One is a small supply runner set to leave in an hour that could get you there early tomorrow morning. The next is a larger ship that will transport the majority of the guests in the morning. Your travel is paid for of course, but you’ll need to get on one of those two vessels.”

With a grave nod, Valsin passes over the envelope containing the invitation, and continues. “Dress appropriately-- the best and brightest of Absalom high society is going to be there." He stares a moment at Krunch, as if trying to think of something to say regarding his appearance, then just shakes his head and keeps talking.

"If you insist on wearing armor, make sure it's damned shined and spotless. This is a wedding: I don't anticipate it being dangerous for you, but... well, if I had a coin for every time I'd told a field agent that and been proven wrong, I'd own Jalmeray. In any case, the Blakros family is providing their own security. You'll be required to peace-bond any weapons when you arrive on the island.

"Be on your best behavior, Pathfinders," Valsin says, his gaze lingering on Filios and Maps. "I imagine that will be harder for some of you than for others, but... please make the attempt. You're representing the Society at what promises to be the social event of the decade. There are going to be powerful people in attendance: dignitaries, ambassadors, famed clergy, city councilmen... Your mission is to make a good impression with the Blakroses, and as many other people as you can. I may have to ask many of these people at the wedding for favors, in the near future: I don't want to have to explain why any of my agents lit a tapestry on fire, groped a bridesmaid, drank themselves into a stupor, or otherwise acted like barbarians on a righteous tear.

"I don’t care if you save the wedding from a dragon, find out the bride is a doppelganger, or discover some grand plot to take over the Inner Sea—- I only care that you leave this wedding having made people happy and improving our standing among the attendees! Are we understood?”

ooc:
Your GM has a slight propensity for teal-dear posts. I'll try and keep it in check past this initial briefing.

If you like to describe your characters physically at the start of a mission, go for it, but I will be asking for descriptions on your arrival to the island, so you can wait until that point if you like as well.

Alan:
Alan's Knowledge: History: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Alan, you are aware that the Blakros family originated in Taldor, and made their initial fortune trading with both Qadira and Taldor during the nations’ centuries-long conflict. Today they are one of the most influential families in Absalom and the greater Inner Sea region.

Krunch nods emphatically as Ambrus's introduction comes to an end.

"Krunch loves weddings! Krunch and Pinchy are happy to help!"

Krunch is a massive brute with obvious signs of otherworldly origins including bestial features, a pair of thick jutting tusks, and skin the color of ash with the texture of cured hide. One beefy hand is noticeably bigger than the other and covered in a stony texture but no less dexterous or able. He wears armor composed of scraps of leather that does little to cover up his thickly muscled and scarred torso and a pair of worn bracers.

A desperately dehydrated crab clings one of the straps of leather wrapped around the bulging muscles of his upper body.

"We'll show everyone how good Pathfinders are!"

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16

Ambrus winces a little at Krunch's enthusiasm. "yes that's what I'm afraid of," he mutters into his clasped hands. More loudly, he says, "There's the spirit, Krunch. You can be the... the tiefling of happiness bursting from their wedding cake."

He pauses a few seconds, then adds on hurriedly, "Not LITERALLY. Desna help us, please don't burst from their wedding cake."

He stares in morbid fascination at the sickly-looking crab, shakes himself, then adds, "Any questions, Pathfinders?"

A man of few words, Maps provides little more than the occasional nod to indicate his understanding of the mission.

A tall man with a thin dour face, he chooses to stand near the wall rather than take a comfortable chair, and spends most of the briefing cleaning a finely-crafted firearm. At least, until Valsin makes mention of fancy clothes and peace knots, at which point he gives a disappointed breath and reluctantly draws aside his coat to holster the weapon. Doing so reveals a gleaming chain shirt beneath the coat along with a bandolier fitted with a few throwing blades. Observant people also notice tattoos peeking out above his collar and from his sleeves. Grim and weathered, he's not the best example of etiquette and grooming, and whatever he might add to the mission is not apparent at first impression. In fact, he looks more likely to be found digging a grave for a funeral then dancing at a wedding.

"What would be the advantage to taking the supply runner and arrive before the other guests? Is the island or either boat large enough that we could bring horses or such like? I assume a backpack would look out of place..." Kardak asks a few more questions about what to bring or not to bring, clearly out of his depth. It seems clear his pockets will be filled with miscellaneous adventuring gear.

It sounds like the finest party I could imagine getting paid to go to.

How much gear could we buy and still make the early boat?

Alan effortly pushes himself off the wall that he was leaning against. He bows to the Venture capitain and says We shall endeavor to shine a bright light on the Pathfinder Society and its agents. He takes a moment to adjust his cloak and brushes some dust from the corner. Well I am ready to go if the rest if you are. I would like to take the supply runner and get there a little early so we can talk to the family and get a lay of the island before the rest of the guests arrive. As influential as the blakroses are this is surely going to be a crowded gala.

Valsin laces his hands together before his face and nods slightly at Kardak's questions.

"As Alan Baird a'Lorien suggests, arriving on the earlier boat would grant you the chance to explore the island, perhaps. However, since that boat departs within the hour, you would not have time to grab more than the barest of, ah, fashionable garb from the market.

"Conversely, should you take the later guest yacht, you will be on board the yacht for a slow and leisurely journey to the island-- affording time to socialize with the other guests on the trip."

Valsin shrugs. "It's really up to you. But there's only the one invitation, so whatever you decide, you'll have to go as a group-- nobody's going to be admitted without that bit of gold-plated paper."

My behavior is always at its best, Venture-Captain. We will be certain to make the society proud.

Filios is tall for an elf and very well-muscled and athletically built with blonde hair and violet eyes. he has an explorer's outfit on, and the only weapon he carries is a finely-crafted Elven Curveblade which is sheathed on his back. As he stands, one can also notice the flash of silver chain under his partially buttoned shirt and cloak.

Well then, I will meet you all at the early boat, if everyone agrees. It appears that I will need to change into my finer garments for the affair. Maps, Alan, see you soon.

He moves towards the door, but stops before exiting, as he turns with an impatient expression directed at the others, awaiting a decision on which boat to report to.

The only female in the briefing room, Saki is a short but obviously fit and well-trained Tian-Min woman with long, dark hair and matching eyes. Her hair is tied up with a red ribbon in a loose ponytail, and she wears a silver chrysanthemum-shaped hair ornament just above her left ear. She is currently wearing a very well made suit of plate armor, with stylised wing-like greaves and a body plate engraved with a pair of songbirds and cherry blossoms, and holds a black glaive decorated with beadwork and engravings in what appears to be some kind of Tian script.

Saki remains quiet throughout Ambrus' briefing, occasionally nodding her head in thought or agreement as he continues on. At the end of it all, the Tian-Min woman gives the venture-captain a light bow--although is grinning somewhat bemusedly as she does so.

"It would be my pleasure to assist, Venture-Captain. I will do my absolute utmost to make sure, ah, everything goes smoothly, shall we say." Saki momentarily glances at Krunch, so quick to be almost unnoticeable. She could almost see the cogs ticking in his mind, and made a mental note to try and keep him as far away from the kitchens as possible.

"I see you're scraping the bottom of the barrel for this assignment, sir." Realising this seems incredibly insulting to the rest of the group, Saki hurries on with an explanation. "Bringing me out of semi-retirement? Things must be busy around here. Ah, but what a return to Society business; attending a wedding! It seems only fitting. Perhaps I might be convinced to take up my glaive for the sake of the Pathfinders once more after this."

Listening to the rest of the group's plans on how to approach their task, Saki frowns. "Horses? Scouting the island? My goodness, people, are we attending a wedding or a riot?" The paladin shakes her head sadly. "I would much rather have more of a chance to speak with the guests and have ample time to prepare myself. Shelyn forgive me, I haven't even the time to find a gift for the bride and groom!"

"If we are to leave within the hour, I really must be off. I'll have barely enough time to pick out a gown, let alone get my hair and makeup done!" Saki sighs wistfully. "If I knew in advance, I would have brought a selection of kimono and kanzashi from my home in Almas..."

As soon as feasible, Saki will make to the door, muttering something under her breath in Minkaian about pearls before swine...

Side note: I haven't played Saki since 2009! Hence the semi-retirement comment.

Saki will be shopping for a noble's outfit and some jewellery as well. Shopping around the Foreign Quarter in particular for some Tian style attire!

Saki is infinitely pleased when she discovers that Alan speaks Tian (and even Minkaian!), and is happy to pass the time chatting away with him in her native languages. Though holding an obvious accent in Taldane, her Minkaian is impeccable, apparently unaffected by years lived in the Inner Sea. "I would not have picked your heritage from afar," she says with some bemusement. "You're lucky to have inherited your blonde hair!" She too recalls the troubles of the Blakros Museum, shuddering a little at the memory of her time there...

After some time shopping, during which Alan is briefly waved off by busy shop assistants trying their best to dress the lady up as best they can in limited time, Saki makes her way to the docks to catch the early boat with the rest. She seems to have chosen a red silk kimono decorated with pink and white flowers, and has done her best to tie her hair back and decorated it with flowery ornaments, including the ones she was wearing while meeting with Ambrus for their briefing.

Before the ship leaves, she fussily checks all the men's attire, chiding any that are looking sloppy or aren't well-dressed enough, occasionally tucking in shirts or straightening ties and so forth.

"By the way... can any of you dance?" she asks the group, distantly hopeful that at least one of them would be able to manage not stepping on the toes of the nobility this day.

I will purchase a courtier's outfit and 50 gp worth of jewellery as well. I would also like to organise some way of getting her armor and glaive to the docks and onto the early boat undamaged - she'll be going unarmored for now.

Krunch arrives dressed in a greatcloak lined in ermine fur like those favored by the famous ulfen Longaxes. Open at the front, it does little to hide his familiar leather armor and exposed hulking musculature but it does give the powerfully built tiefling a certain regal bearing. His stained many-times-mended hide leggings and open-toed sandals have been replaced by soft doeskin breeches and sturdy boots.

His crab, perched as perilously as ever, sits on Krunch's shoulder wearing a tiny felt hat and even tinier bow tie.

"Krunch thinks Saki looks very pretty", the demonic pathfinder says with a wide grin. "And Krunch loves to dance!"

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16

Valsin nods very emphatically at Saki's glances at Krunch. Yes, please! say his eyes.

"Well, Pathfinders-- best of luck to you all, then. And... enjoy yourselves, ha."

With nods to the Venture-Captain, you each quickly make your way to the city's bazaar, with plans to meet at the docks to catch the supply runner ship.

***

For Filios, a blushing shop-girl who is taken with his handsome face and athletic build suggests a necklace of alexandrite and amethyst set into strong silver links. She also murmurs that she is free of her work at dusk, should he be around... Whether or not the elf tells her he will not is, of course, up to him.

The haberdasher and tailor who find themselves faced with the task of outfitting Krunch's hulking form (and Pinchy's tiny one) give him first looks of dismay, and then grim resolution, like paladins charging into the Worldwound. If this is to be their greatest hour, they will rise to it like men! Or, well, like men and and like gnomes, since it's a gnome's shop that carries a tiny novelty hat for Pinchy. But the fur that drapes Krunch is thick and glossy-sleek-- he looks like a lord of hell, perhaps, if not of human society.

Alan and Saki have been fortunate to find The Jade Temple, a shop specializing in the styles of the Dragon Empires. A smiling human of obvious Tien ancestry, his hair stark white with age, assists them with the purchases. He compliments Saki very sincerely (and at great length) upon her choice of kimono-- "Good fortune and joy!"-- and, when she explains she is going to attend a wedding, he claps his hands and holds up a finger for her to wait. The old man bustles behind the counter, then returns with a small carved wooden box containing exquisitely fragant tea leaves. "A gift for the happy couple," he says with a deep bow.

The old man is just as helpful in assisting Alan with his outfit, presenting one with a stylized repeating crane in silver thread on sky-blue silk-- nothing ostentatious, but elegantly tasteful all the same.

Even Maps finds something suitable to wear to a wedding: a set of fine robes broidered with discreet topazes here and there, to catch the sun and bring to mind the endless gleaming sands of legendary Osirion. Golden sphinxes repeat in a subtle pattern through the fabric.

Those of you who have already dressed make quite the scene when you show up at the dock where the supply runner is nearly finished loading. Her skipper gives the group a bemused stare, clearly wondering why fine guests would choose to ride his runner to the island, but by his shrug it is obvious he doesn't get paid enough to ask questions of important dignitaries like guests of the Blakroses.

"Well then, board if yeh will, lords and lady," he says with a mumble. "Mind your dress, ma'am, there's fish guts on the dock...."

****

The sun is past the noon zenith, but high in the sky still, as the runner skims across the waves with the last of the goods needed for the important party (at least, until someone on the island notices something ELSE they still need). The daylight glitters off the bright blue waves of the Inner Sea, and the boat's swift prow sends jets of spray up with every plunge through a sparkling crest.

Though the isle of Pariol is not too far from Absalom proper, it is still several hours before a sailor cries Land ho! and Pariol rises over the horizon.

The island rises sharply on its western edge, with steep bluffs overlooking the sea. Towards the east, the island slopes down more gently, and it is here where the ships of the Blakros family and their employees are docked.

A stone quay, generations-old by its workmanship, juts out from the eastern shores into the bay. The skipper and sailors yell at their passengers to get out of the way as they furl the sails and do the other work needful to bringing the runner into harbor.

The Pathfinders have a few moments longer to study the island as the ship is tied off. At the steep western end, the blackened ruins of what must once have been a large structure jut up through the trees. On the eastern end, much newer buildings are visible, and the white lines of freshly-chalked paths wind through the pine trees and rocks that cover the island. Everywhere there is activity, as servants in the Blakros livery hurry to finish final preparations.

As the Pathfinders disembark, a flustered-looking man in chainmail hurries up to them on the dock, trailing three other soldiers in his wake.

"Guests are not to arrive for several more hours!" he says, sounding aggrieved and distracted. He has an impressive, walrus-like mustache, which he chews on a moment before shaking his head. "Well, no matter, you're here now. Your invitation, please, and I must ask you to permit my men to peace-bond your weapons, as per the code of conduct the Blakroses are asking all their guests to abide by.

"Additionally--" he draws himself up with self-importance and authority, "--if you are carrying any wands upon your person, please present them now."

***

OOC:
All purchases are fine and are made without problems. I'll make notes of them on your chronicle sheets at the end. Saki, there are no problems in having your armor and glaive transported-- the shopkeep of the Jade Temple has one of his delivery boys wheel them to the docks after you.

Unless you state otherwise, I will assume everyone is permitting their weapons to be peacebonded. If you wish to smuggle weapons or wands past the inspection of the guards, you'll need to give me a Sleight of Hand check to attempt this.

The guards' orders seem to revolve around wands and obvious weapons-- they mutter to each other about potions, scrolls, and other such items, but do not inspect them closely.

Just before the boat leaves, Kardak rides furiously up to the ship, his robes billowing out behind him and a grin on his face. "Well, don't some of you look fancy. I had to do some hunting to find things and decided that getting the dust of Absalom on my duds before the party probably wasn't the best way to make an impression."

"Will they let me take Amsi?" he asks, patting his camel.

Kardak's outfit looks something like this. Loose robes are much faster to shop for than form-fitting suits, in Kardak's opinion.

When asked to peace-bond his weapons, Kardak asks, "Do you have somewhere safe that I could store some gear of mine? I'm afraid in my haste to get here I forgot to leave some things at home." He'll have his glaive and sap peace-bonded and let them store his longsword, warhammer, spiked gauntlet, sling, and shield (and some other gear) somewhere. "I also have this healing wand. Since I can't use it, do any of you want it, or should I store it with the rest of my gear?" he asks the party.

Kardak will ask whether the guards want his alchemical items peace-bonded.

The old man bustles behind the counter, then returns with a small carved wooden box containing exquisitely fragant tea leaves. "A gift for the happy couple," he says with a deep bow.

Saki is beyond delighted at the old man's gracious gift, and accepts it with a bow of her own. "You are too kind!"

(By the time the runner reaches Pariol, the sailors and crew and servants aboard it are all pretty sure you are collectively insane. Watching the massive, inhuman Krunch and the graceful, well-dressed Saki dancing on a ship, while Kardak's camel spits reflectively onto that same deck, is proof positive of this.

(Still, it's probably wise practice for the social whirl of the party. Learning those few steps from your paladin of Shelyn may be useful!)

At the dock, the guards begin the process of peacebonding your weapons-- a thin young woman who is wearing the same uniform as the other guards but looks much less the fighting sort uses a wand to tap each blade, club, and other hostile implement in turn. She gives Maps a stare when he reveals his veritable closet of weaponry, mutters faintly, "This is light?" but proceeds to tap each one of his wicked-looking knives. At least she has two people who aren't armed at all, as far as she can tell, to make up for it.

The walrus-mustachioed captain seems somewhat distracted-- as much by Saki's charm as anything-- but he clears his throat meaningfully in Maps' direction when the wand slips out.

Guards' perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

"Are those hostile spells in those wands, sir? Such are strictly forbidden. If you wish to bring curative wands or other protective magics, my orders are that you must demonstrate the wand's capabilities for me and Nersa here, but you'll be permitted to keep such wands once they are shown not to be harmful."

When Kardak asks about his various alchemical supplies, the captain and the thin woman exchange looks; she shrugs. The captain whuffles his mustache, looks at the bottles with clear incomprehension that he tries to hide, and finally nods. Maybe it's some of that half-orc whiskey he keeps hearing about....

"Those aren't on the list of contraband items, so, ah enjoy, sir. And yes, we can store items for you while you are guests. Ah... are you wanting your... uh... your.... humped beast to be stabled, sir?" the captain asks, while one of his subordinates jots down the full list of the items Kardak is 'checking', and gives him his claim slip.

Maps, the island appears to be mostly scrub brush and pine trees in terms of vegetation, at least on a casual glance. You do have plenty of time to tromp around getting a feel for the place. Knowledge of nature, or survival, would be your friend in regards to learning about the local fauna of Pariol Island.

The captain informs you it'll be several more hours before the rest of the guests begin to arrive. He says you are welcome to stroll along the beach, or walk through the paths that lead around the island, or even to help yourselves to early refreshments-- the only areas that are off-limits are the wedding chapel itself, which nobody but staff and family will be permitted to enter until the big day.

He also says that if you wander up onto the bluffs, be careful-- it's a steep fall to the waves below, from there, and that... "Those ruins up there aren't too safe-- I wish to Abadar that Commander Shafar had let us rope them off!"

Non-hostile wands, such as CLW or Shield, are permitted in the wedding, provided you cross off one charge as you demonstrate they are just what they appear to be, and not Wands of Murdering Murder +4.

I'll put up the island map and further descriptions of places later today. As a super-brief summation, though, there are five major locations of interest on the island:

-The docks, where you currently are;
-The 'ruins' the captain refers to, which were visible from the boat;
-The heavily-guarded wedding chapel;
-The wedding pavilion-- dead center of the island, a large canvas pavilion surrounded by smaller tents. Food and drink, servants and musicians, a dance floor, all sorts of goodies;
-Guest cottages-- where the Blakroses expect you and the other guests to spend the night. One of these is clearly labeled as being 'For Our Honored Allies, the Pathfinders'.

To Alan's question, the mustachio'ed captain says that while Hamartia Blakros is already on the island, he would suggest that you leave her be unless you have important business-- the powerful matriarch of the Blakros clan is micromanaging every detail of her daughter's wedding, and he himself would only dare interrupt her at this stage of the planning if he had a verified sighting of a dragon bearing down on the island.

The captain is sure that Hamaria Blakros will make herself available to greet guests as the evening proceeds.

"If I have trouble, I'd sooner talk to our commander-- that's Commander Rubani Shafar-- but she doesn't care to have her time wasted either. I'll admit, we're all a bit on edge what with the problems the so-called Onyx Alliance has caused the family, lately."

Beyond that, none of the rest of the guests have arrived yet-- the bride, Michellia Blakros is on the island, but is secluded with her maids, ensuring that everything is perfect regarding her appearance. Bad luck to risk the groom seeing her before the ceremony, and all... Damian Kastner, the groom, will arrive on his family's ship tonight.

Any more questions for the captain, feel free; I'm just launching into descriptions in the next post so you know what you'll see if/when/as you go to the various areas.

As you set out on the path that leads from the docks, you can see that all around you the servants bustle with last-minute preparations. The footpath you are following has glass-and-bronze globes set on low posts at twenty-foot intervals, with lamps inside; they are not lit yet, but no doubt will be as dusk falls over the island.

The servants are tying silk streamers between each of these posts. The hangings alternate-- black-and-gold streamers for the Blakros family's colors, and dark-gray-and-red streamers for Kastner's family.

The wedding pavilion is hung in black-and-gold. It is surrounded by at least twenty smaller, plainer tents from which come a hundred sweet and savory scents-- baking bread, roasting meats, searing vegetables, and various sauces being simmered and sautéd.

There are numerous tables and chairs being arranged by a small army of servants, who are then laying out cutlery and china in perfect, artistic arrangements-- a black rose tied with gold ribbon rests on each plate.

A large dance floor of polished oak planks is laid out, and musicians are tuning their instruments to one side of it.

The guest cottages are attractive, but clearly designed as temporary buildings-- they are mostly open-frame structures with wall of hanging fabric, designed to be pulled back in hot weather. Hopefully no storms will come during your two-day stay on the isle, as the structures would not stand up well to severe wind or rain. The beams still smell of fresh sawdust and paint-- indeed, you can see a craftsman hurriedly daubing some varnish on a beam of one of the other guest cottages as you approach.

Inside, the cottages contain beds for eight, arranged in the classiest bunk-bed fashion you have ever seen. Each bunk has small curtains that can be drawn around it, and the rooms hold footlockers where personal possessions can be stowed... if you trust to the mass-produced locks, at least.

The wedding chapel is clearly a more durable structure, at least from what you can see from a hundred yards away on the path. Two of the guards in the Blakros livery are stationed here, and snap to attention when anyone approaches on the path. They politely but firmly reiterate that only the immediate family and staff are permitted in the chapel for now. If anyone wishes to attempt to get past the guards, just let me know.

Finally, the ruins: atop the western bluffs, with a commanding view of the Inner Sea and, distantly, the Isle of Kortos itself. This burnt-out building appears to be the remains of a once-fine manor house-- a summer house of the Blakros family, actually. It looks as if it has been a derelict building for several years, at least. Blackened beams and a collapsed, soot-stained tile roof are visible on approach, as well as another contingent of guards. They do not bar your approach, but they warn you to be careful. One of the guards, a woman of some fifty years with a broad scar across her face, spits into the soil at her feet.

"We've been clearin' stuff out of there the last few days, so drunken lordlings don't cut themselves, but I still wouldn't trust none of those beams. Damn shame, seeing the old place like this-- I remember when it was a fine, fine building."

Saki demonstrates her wand to the guards, pricking her finger and healing it up with a single charge of blueish magical energy before slipping it back in her obi for safekeeping. She requests her belongings be sent up to their designated guest rooms, but otherwise has no further questions for the guards down at the docks.

Afterwards she joins the rest of the party in their brief tour of the grounds, careful to follow the paths and keep the folds of her newly-purchased kimono from dragging on the ground or snagging on something. The atmosphere of the wedding was, of course, like cotton candy to the follower of the Goddess of Love, and Saki is soon all smiles as they witness the last-minute preparations going on. She breathes in the intermingling scents of cooking food and sighs happily. When it becomes clear that the group wants to investigate the ruins, the paladin seems slightly reluctant.

Luckily, the scarred guard out the front gives her the perfect excuse to avoid digging around in the ruin, and Saki lingers behind to speak with her rather than join everyone else inside.

"What happened here?" she asks curiously. "An accidental burn-out? I'm surprised they've yet to knock the place down; it seems quite dangerous!"

The captain seems slightly put off by Kardak's questions about his commander-- or at least, wary of saying anything negative that might reflect poorly on his superior (and thus get him in trouble).

He does tell Kardak that Commander Shafar is of Garundi stock, originally; and that her family has supervised the Blakros's personal guards for generations. Beyond that, he speaks in the generic, positive tones one might expect when asked about their superior.

The Onyx Alliance is a shadowy organization... literally. They are denizens of the Plane of Shadow, and they and the Blakros family have crossed swords before-- in recent history, when the engagement of Michellia Blakros to Damian Kastner was first announced. The Onyx Alliance's true motives are unknown, but they seem to desire slaves and wealth from the Material Plane.

Let's sort out who is where at this point in time-- the party has several hours before other guests begin arriving, so you're not really in a time crunch, but just for coherency's sake:

Krunch: Looking for Commander Shafar
Kardak: Would accompany him before heading to the ruins, it sounds like;
Maps, Filios, Alan, Saki: Looking for root as they tour the grounds, eventually proceeding towards the ruins?

Basically, if the group wants to split along those lines, that is fine, or the group can stick together, go to Shafar first, and then go to the ruins. We'll still resolve the ruins exploration regardless, but I don't want any characters to feel they are getting left out of exploration scenes.
