As soon as Syvlara, Elizabeth and Astra cross the portcullis gate on their horses, one of the guards pulls the lever and the gate begins to lower at a significantly quick speed.

Anyone who wishes to cross the gateway can make a Handle Animal DC 10 to spur their horse through before it closes. Failure means the gate closes on you and you take damage, as well as are pinned to the ground. Currently, Will, Sneek and Chakos are outside while the womenfolk are on the courtyard side. If Sneek happens to be on foot, he can make a Reflex DC 12 to move to the other side instead.

Also, as soon as Syvlara, Elizabeth and Astra cross, they see four leather wearing people, though they do not wear helmets over their heads. They look like this. Their lips have been cut off along with portions of their cheeks revealing permanent smiles. Their leader is missing one of his hands-it is replaced with a handaxe.

"Hatchet-Hand, it looks like we got us some dessert," says one of the Smilers. They all laugh.

Astra says as she easily controls her mount to clip-clop through the gate with seconds to spare, into the courtyard and makes a neat, perfect circle with the horse as she comes to a stop. "They seem to think of us as dessert, and look at those lips", she points a finger in the direction of the Smilers, trying to call Elizabeth and Syvlara's attention to what no doubt is a pretty attention-grabbing body modification in itself. "A ritualistic mutilation of the mouth often coincides with a racially deviant diet. But what I'm most curious about is --" and she turns her attention from talking to her companions, to calling out towards the leader of the Smilers, "I say! Greetings! I was wondering if you might tell me more about what I assume is a proclivity for cannibalism? Is it more of a secular tradition for your tribe, or is it spurred by some sort of religious belief? Or has there been some sort of catastrophe that befell your previous food chain, thus necessitating a drastic change?"

He grimaced as he realized how out of place these guardsmen looked. But he was too late to tell the rest of the group his thoughts, watching as the portcullis slammed down, cutting off half of their party and catching Chakos. Jumping off his horse, he scours the area around the fort for a large rock, big enough that he could use as a fulcrum. Spotting a large chunk of the wall, he drags over to the portcullis, pulls a crowbar out of his bag and shoves it place, grunting mightily as he tries to force the heavy gate open enough for Chakos to slip free.

Astra pulls out a beautiful masterwork longsword made out of adamantine, with an otter symbol on it, and flips it in an arc through the air at Syvlara. "Take good care of it. It's important to me", she says, while her hand goes to the hilt of a stick hanging from her hip. "Oh, and if at all possible, please leave one of them alive. I would love to have an opportunity to interview one of these degenerates -- the psychological issues alone would be utterly compelling, not to mention the broader-reaching sociological ramifications --"

Syvlara catches the sword, and examines it in awe.

"Incredible, what craftsmanship." Syvlara exclaimed. She then looks back to Astra and replies "No promises, but I'll do what I can."


Chakos charges towards the closing gate and gets pinned to the ground. The metal fangs pierce through Chakos and his horse. The animal screeches in pain.

The enemies may be bandits.

Astra maneuvers her horse through the gate and back, confused for a moment at what is happening, and ends up in the courtyard.

"Because human meat is tasty?" One of the smilers shouts at her to answer her question. "Haven't tried elf meat though. Probably soft and juicy. White meat. The rat meat we can throw to the dogs."

Will Gestros finds a large stone, and tries to use it lift the portcullis. He only manages to raise it three inches, not enough to get through and props the stone underneath.

Syvlara dismounts her steed and stands firmly in the center. She brandishes the adamantine longsword intimidatingly at her opponents.

She takes up a defensive stance and awaits their next move.

The two Smilers on the walls, take out their guns and fire at Astra. One of the bandits misses Astra and nearly hits the horses leg. The other gets in a lucky shout and catches Astra in the stomach.

"Agh!" Astra cries out as one of the bullets blasts clear through her torso, jangles of chainmail shards blasting across the courtyard together with spatters of her blood and flesh. Wheezing for breath, she drops off her horse, falling to one knee as a dark stain drenches her chain shirt. She breathes heavily, then whispers words of arcane magic. Finally, healed a little bit, she stumbles a five foot step closer to the keep wall, trying to get out of the higher grounders' line of sight.

Cure Moderate Wounds: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (5, 6) + 4 = 15

Shoving the rock in place, Chakos is at least out of danger form being completely crushed. But Will didn't have the time to move the heavy iron barricade and let himself through. Reaching into his Haversack and producing a length of silvery-white rope, he hurls the grappling hook on the end upwards to latch onto the wall. Tugging on it to ensure he had purchase, he starts climbing up over the wall, trying to move as quickly as he could as gunshots rang out just inside the walls.

Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13


Will climbs up the nearest wall and finds himself face to face with the two Smilers on the wall. They are surprised someone actually climbed it, but you can't see their expression with their helmets on. They would probably be smiling anyway.

Hauling himself onto the wall, Will stares down the men in armor, slamming his fists together and readying himself for combat. He seems to ready a punch at one of them, but instead brings the brunt of his huge hand down on the enemy's gun.

Brawler's Cunning to give myself Improved Sunder.

His smoldering orange eyes will turn to the other man, snarling angrily at him like some wild beast, with bits of metal and wood falling out of his hand as he flexes it.

Demoralize as a swift action thanks to the Omen trait. DC to beat for me is 10 + target HD + Target Wis mod. Lasts for 1 extra round for every 5 I beat the DC.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26


Will does imperceptible damage to the Smiler's gun. It looks broken enough as it is. Will's fast movement causes the Smiler to look shocked.

Smiler A (0) is shaken. Smiler B(0), Smiler C(0) and Smiler E(0) and Hatchet-Hand (0) are blinded for a maximum of four rounds, Smiler D(0).

Pull the lever, strength check to raise the portcullis (its difficult because its iron) or destroy the gate (also difficult because it is metal). You're probably stuck until someone pulls the lever.

Hatchet-Hand gets blasted straight in the face with a scorching ray. His teeth blacken and black marks streak across his face. Despite the damage, he is still standing and looks quite healthy.

"Astra, Chakos. Get ready, this won't be pleasant." Says Syvlara as she reaches into her backpack. She takes out a smokestick and lights it. A thick black smoke erupts and blocks all vision. Wheezing, Syvlara says

"Okay,*cough* Astra. Let's *cough* get Chakos out of here."

Syvlara lights a smokestick to block out the enemy's vision. She will aid Chakos in his strength check at her next possible moment.

Strength Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Smokestick specifics:
This alchemically treated wooden stick instantly creates thick, opaque smoke when burned. The smoke fills a 10-foot cube (treat the effect as a fog cloud spell, except that a moderate or stronger wind dissipates the smoke in 1 round). The stick is consumed after 1 round, and the smoke dissipates naturally after 1 minute.

I will pull out my Greataxe and ready to whack any bad guy that comes close.


Chakos is pinned. He cannot move his arms in any meaningful way. I suppose he can touch himself, use nonsomatic, non-component magic, speak, but he's stuck. Realizing this, he probably can't lift the portcullis himself.

With the aid of the stone, Syvlara manages to pull the portcullis enough for Chakos to roll through. The horse, unfortunately, writhes beneath the bars, unable to escape.

Will watches as the two gunmen on either side of him reloard and focus on him. At least they wouldn't be firing down into the courtyard any more. Sensing this though, he drops his more aggressive boxer-like stance and slips into something else. His body seems to sway and writhe to an unheard beat, his hands coming up in more like jabbing fingers than brunt fists. Even his eyes seem to change, gaining black slits instead of pupils, as he awaits their next move.

Astra sees the lever for the portcullis at the top of the wall, beside the two Smilers wearing helmets.

Syvlara goes into the smoke and swings at the boss Smiler. The smoke makes strange illusions and the elf misses.

Hatchet Hand swings his weapon at Syvlara, slashing with his hand handaxe twice. The weapon cuts into Syvlara's upper left arm. The two blinded smilers try to shake off their condition, but are still unable to see properly. The free smiler reloads and fires at Astra, and shoots her in the foot. The bandits on the roof fire again at Will. One of the bandits' bullets lodges itself in his thigh.

Yes, Astra sees stairs. It'll take her about 20 feet to climb up the stairs and get onto the wall.

Then Astra heads to the stairs, making her way up onto the wall to join Will against the two Smilers there. "Hang on, Syvlara!" she calls out as she abandons the elf against the larger amount of opponents. "I'll be right back!" If she can still make an attack against one of the Smilers once she's on top of the wall, she will do so; otherwise, just save this roll for the next round.

To the newbies, I don't intend to adjust encounters. This is an encounter for four people, but I tend to roll high. Somehow it translates to computer rolls.

Astra's blade clangs off of the handaxe hand. Hatchet Hand licks his teeth as he stares at Syvlara.

"I got just the perfect recipe for you elf. I'll mix your liver with chopped ears and mix it with those herbs and berries your people love so much. Heheheh."
