Last Stand on Tantalus
Round #1
Battlemap

Conditions:

  • Scale: Each square = 2 meters.
  • Fortified Plateau: Kill-team Umbra has had time to prepare the Southern Plateau with earthworks, trenches, and foxholes, transforming this patch of arctic waste into a redoubt against the Tyranid assault. Any space marine participating in this combat may use the Tactical Advance action as either a Half Action or a Full Action, so long as they remain in the immediate vicinity of the plateau.
  • Icy Bolt-Holes: Battle-brothers remaining in the darkened trench areas gain the benefit of Cover equivalent to thick ice (AP = 8). Even those battle-brothers roaming the plateau can gain the benefit of lesser wind-blown ice outcroppings (AP = 4). The tracked hauler provides an AP = 8 for anyone inside.
  • Mole Mortar!: Karlack 2nd BS = 35, Rof: S/-/-, Damage: 2d10+2 X, Pen: 2, Clip: 1, Rld: Full, Special: Inaccurate, Shocking, Blast (4).
Once per round (the crew has an experienced loader and spotter, allowing reloads each round) Brother Quintus can designate a target for the Mole Mortar set up inside the tracked hauler. As the mortar has a minimum range of 50m, the target must be part of the encroaching horde (excluding enemy forces on the plateau). The mortar applies its damage to either of the two Vanguard Hordes, each possessing a Magnitude of 60.
  • Vanguard Hordes:Two Immense (+40 to hit), Magnitude 60 Tyranid Vanguard Hordes comprised of termagants and hormagaunts begin the battle 6 rounds away from contact with the Kill-team. These Tyranid are the probing, feral tip of the swarm's southern spearhead, and thus are not bio-modified to possess ranged weaponry. They may be fired upon normally. For rounds 1-3 they are considered at Extreme Range (-30 to hit), 4-6 Long Range (-10 to hit).

Initiative Roles for NPC Units:

Commissar Sander and the Karlack 2nd (Horde, Magnitude = 20), 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12.
Raveners, 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7.
Hormagaunt Hordes, 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15.
Magos Vyakai, 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12.
Brother Sepheren, 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10.

Initiative Order:
15-Hormagaunt Hordes
12-Brother Vex
12-Commissar Sander and the Karlack 2nd
12-Magos Vyakai
11-Brother Quintus
10-Brother Syne
10-Brother Sepheren
08-Brother Decius
07-Raveners

Hormagaunt Horde #1, Magnitude = 15
Hormagaunt Horde #2, Magnitude = 15
Hormagaunt Horde #3, Magnitude = 15
Tyranid Vanguard Horde #1, Magnitude = 60

All Forbidden Lore (Xenos) tests to positively identify the Raveners failed.

Successive explosions of frozen permafrost and chunks of jagged ice blast into the air as the ground shakes with a tripartite earthquake around the perimeter of the Southern Plateau. Before the last shards of falling rock and ice mist have settled, swarms of skittering hormagaunts pour forth from gaping rents in the uneven ice cover. As the swarms turn to converge on the battle-brothers and guardsmen, three enormous Tyranid warrior-caste bio-forms erupt from the ground behind them, the tunneling behemoths ripping themselves free from the womb of frozen rock in a violent birth of clambering scything talons, scrabbling for purchase. Once free, the Raveners move with a preternatural serpentine grace on their coiled lower bodies, closing on their prey with blinding speed and a single-minded hunger.

The Last Stand on Tantalus has begun, Brother Vex acts first as Kill-team Umbra was prepared for the Tyranid assault due to Brother Syne's success at standing sentinel.

Brother Quintus wrote:

Lorm, the Vanguard Hordes are considered "off the map" to the south of your position until round #6, but still can be fired upon by either yourself (with the penalties above) or the mole mortar. Because of the long range of the mole mortar, the penalties for hitting the Tyranid Vanguard hordes are reduced considerably:

Rounds 1-3 [Long Range, -10 to BS]
Rounds 4-6 [Short Range, +10 to BS]

Over the Karlack 2nd's vox-channel Brother Quintus and the rest here Commissar Sander's steely reply,

<<<"You heard the Lord-Astartes, prepare to fire!">>>

The spotter's voice then comes over the vox, his voice harried but clear as he sounds the terra-firma beneath his feet, judging depth and trajectory for his burrowing munitions.

<<<Plotting subterranean angle, -21.1°, south-southeast, angle of incidence verified, LOAD!>>>"

There is a slight pause, followed by ratcheting sounds.

<<<Target confirmed, FIRE!">>>

Another jarring shudder ripples across the plateau, and the stationary cargo hauler rocks on its treads as the mole mortar fires.

BS = 35, -10 (Long Range), modified BS = 25, 1d100 ⇒ 11, a hit!.

Rolling damage, 2d10 + 2 ⇒ (2, 6) + 2 = 10, just enough to penetrate AP and TB for the Vanguard Horde. Vanguard Horde #1 sustains 5 Magnitude damage (4 for Blast (4) +1 for the Explosive Quality).

A puff of black smoke appears on the distant horizon to the south, launching a puff of snow airborne along with the dismembered bodies of dozens of the encroaching Tyranid, followed by a hoarse cheer from the mortar crew over the vox-link.

Commissar Sander forestalls the celebration:

Brother Vex, as the krak grenades can only be thrown one at a time, I will use your first roll for damage. I just need to know whether you are targeting Hormagaunt Horde #1, or Ravener #1, as there is no Blast on the krak grenade it only can effect a single target.

EDIT: Brother Vex, saw above that you specified the Ravener.

Emerging from the sundered earth, the Tyranid has no time to avoid the high explosive, which detonates diectly beneath its serpentine lower body with a loud KRUMP!.

Damage inflicted is 26, with a Pen = 6 that negates AP = 6, and a TB of 8 yields 18 net Wounds to the Ravener.

The Tyranid shrieks as the flexible chitin that lines its serpentine lower body is flayed and torn by the explosion, causing it to fall forward awkwardly as it climbs from the hole.

The skittering hormagaunts surge out of their tunnels and move to overwhelm the defenders.

Hormagaunt Horde #1 makes a beeline for Brother Vex, WS = 45, 1d100 ⇒ 79, miss. Overwhelming Quality does not apply, as the horde is Magnitude 15, not meeting the threshold of 20. Brother Vex is now engaged in melee with the Horde.

Hormagaunt Horde #2 moves to engage Brother Sepheren, WS = 45, 1d100 ⇒ 66, miss. Overwhelming Quality does not apply, as the horde is Magnitude 15, not meeting the threshold of 20. Brother Sepheren is now engaged in melee with the Horde.

Hormagaunt Horde #3 moves to attack the tracked hauler, WS = 45, 1d100 ⇒ 10, a hit. Rolling damage, 2d10 + 5 ⇒ (10, 8) + 5 = 23, Pen = 3, the damage rolled is enough to penetrate the armor of the hauler and the guardsmen, 2 points of Magnitude damage inflicted to the Karlack 2nd for degrees of success. Overwhelming Quality does not apply, as the horde is Magnitude 15, not meeting the threshold of 20.

The swarming 'nids collide with the battle-brothers, but both manage to hold their own, kicking and clawing the beasts away from their armor as they hold their ground.

The clutch to the northeast clamber over the tracked hauler as one, a handful scuttling in through open gunports even as the Karlack 2nd begins their disciplined fire, the shouts of surprise and screams from inside the fortified vehicle echo across the plateau.

Got it, Bal, results posted in edit above.

With the sound of crashing truncheons and Commissar Sander's chainsword roaring from within the trailer, the brief incursion is contained, and the Karlack 2nd begin a barrage of withering fire centered on the swarming hormagaunts.

BS = 35, +10 (Semi-Auto Burst), +30 (Point Blank Range), modified BS = 75, rolling, 1d100 ⇒ 94, a miss.

The guardsmen return to their firing stations too late from their clean-up within the hauler to do much damage, lasguns whining and cracking but doing little to slow the horde's advance.

Commissar Sander, BS = 46, +30 Point Blank Range, modified BS = 76, firing, 1d100 ⇒ 44, a hit, rolling damage, 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16, damage enough to harm the horde, dealing 1 point of Magnitude.

The commissar rallies the confused guardsmen, striding to the nearest firing port and burning away one, two, and then a third of the smothering hormagaunts with a blast from his plasma pistol.

With a clicking of half-frozen servo-engines, Magos Vyakai engages his automated survival subroutine, rising off the ground a few meters with his maglev generators to clear the swarming hormagaunts before rotating around and hovering in the direction of his foes. The Magos then levels his Infernus pistol at the towering Ravener just as it fully emerges beside him.

BS = 20, +30 (Point Blank Range), modified BS = 50, rolling, 1d100 ⇒ 74 a miss.

Due to a malfunction in the Magos' weapon mechadendrite, the recoil of the superheated blast causes it go wide, slagging an upright knob of frozen rock a meter to the left of the Tyranid.

Brother Quintus is next.

Full Auto Burst targeting Ravener #2. Ballistic skill +30 for Point Blank Range, +20 for Full Auto, +10 for Immovable Warrior, and +? for Ravener Size. This may actually exceed the maximum amount of bonuses that a test can receive so let me know.

BS 51 + 30 + 20 + 10 = 111 : 1d100=50

Stepping forward to better fan out the spreading pyre of promethium death, Brother Quintus bathes the swarming hormagaunts and the Ravener in shower of liquid fire.

Damage to the horde factoring in Cleanse and Purify and Unrelenting Devastation is 3d5+9, rolling 3d5 + 9 ⇒ (1, 2, 4) + 9 = 16, rolling damage 2d10 + 6 ⇒ (3, 9) + 6 = 18, enough to score damage, validating the hits.

The hormagaunts beginning to swarm the tracked hauler are incinerated, turned to crackling brittle husks, tumbling across the melting ice away from the Guard position.

Hormagaunt horde #3 has been eliminated.

Sensing the onrushing flames, the larger xenos attempt to slither out of the path of the firestorm.

Ravener #3 attempts to Dodge, Dodge = 25 (unskilled, 1/2 Agility), rolling, 1d100 ⇒ 74, Dodge failed. Rolling damage, 2d10 + 6 ⇒ (4, 10) + 6 = 20, the Penetration of 6 negates the Raveners AP, and the TB mitigates damage to 12 Wounds damage. Rolling to see if the Ravener catches on fire, Agility = 50 - 20 (Cleanse and Purify Bonus), modified Agility = 30, rolling, 1d100 ⇒ 90, failed, Ravener #3 is on fire.

Even as the serpentine warrior-caste Tyranid attempts to escape the curtain of flame, Brother Quintus pivots his body, expertly encompassing the xenos in the scorching blast. Chitin sizzles and pops as the creature catches alight. It turns headlong into the source of its pain and charges through the firestorm toward the Ultramarine.

Size modifier is Enormous [+20], Ellipsis, but you have already achieved the maximum bonus of +60.

Six degrees of success is achieved, yielding seven hits total.

Rolling damage:
2d10 + 10 ⇒ (9, 9) + 10 = 28, Tearing die, 1d10 ⇒ 2, Damage = 28
2d10 + 10 ⇒ (7, 7) + 10 = 24, Tearing die, 1d10 ⇒ 8, Damage = 25

*Righteous Fury on last hit, 1d10 ⇒ 9, modified damage = 35

The Ravener senses the thudding fire of the heavy bolter as the first hits slam home, and attempts to quickly slither out of the fusillade.

The Ravener attempt to Dodge (25), 1d100 ⇒ 91, failed.

Hit after hit slams into the spasming xenos from behind, ripping its body apart in a shower of bright purple ichor and pulped carapace. It ceases to exist as a solid object in a matter of seconds.

Ravener #2 has been obliterated.

Taken aback as the hormagaunts erupt from the earth almost at his feet, Brother Sepheren raises his chainsword and begins to hack and cut at the swarming Tyranids.

WS = 44, +10 (Horde Size), modified Ws = 54 1d100 ⇒ 46, one degree of success, rolling damage, 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Damage with Penetration (4) this is just enough to cause a Wound, Hormagaunt horde #2 sustains one Magnitude damage.

As the hormagaunts swarm around Brother Sepheren, Brother Decius sidesteps, centering his bolter on the mass of scuttling horrors before firing.

All hits yield damage, 4 + 1 (Explosive Quality) = 5 Magnitude damage to Hormagaunt Horde #2.

The bolter roars, Brother Decius sowing death back and forth as he sweeps his holy weapon across the xenos, rendering them down to shattered chitin and pulped viscera.

The ravener, completely engulfed in flames, charges Brother Quintus, talons raised high overhead to bring pain to the source of its agony.

Fire at will, Brother Quintus, just remember if you do, this will be your Reaction for the round.

This also goes for Brother Vex, and Brother Syne, although I'd imagine Brother Vex will prefer to save his Reaction for a Parry or Dodge, but I'll leave that to Bal. Brother Sepheren and Brother Decius will use their Reaction following everyone else, prior to the ravener's attacks.

One of the larger hormagaunts turns from the mass attacking Brother Sepheren and skitters across the uneven ice toward the Iron Snake. Taking careful aim, he snaps off another well-aimed shot at the creature.
