At Muchorak's expression of disdain for the city, Marak calmly disagrees. "Look again, friend. We did not travel through some pristine forest to get here, but a series of plains, with their own natural beauty, to be sure. While there are cities that devastate the natural world to exist, here there were open plains, and now, there is vastly more life concentrated in this city than ever walked this small portion of the plains that lie to the north and east. It is not the majestic life of the elk or the catamount or the wolf, certainly, but the gulls and pigeons and rats are as much of the natural world as any more magnificent and well-respected creature. And then there are the men. We may have a greater capacity for destruction and waste than most creatures of the natural world, but we were placed here by the gods as surely as the eagle and the bear, born of the same natural processes as any other worldly creature."

Marak regards the buildings again. "Trees would be an improvement over some of this artless stonework, and the smell of nature is always preferable to that of a city, but it seems unlikely that trees ever grew here in abundance, anyway, based on what we saw coming here. The salt air was probably not to their liking, and planting a forest here would be as unnatural as planting a city of stone..."

Basing this opinion off of the map, which suggests that the area between Sandpoint and Magnimar is not heavily forested, although the map doesn't go down into fine detail, and we may have passed through many small copses of trees and even forested areas that didn't rate inclusion on such a large-scale map...

You arrive outside the Pediment Building and are directed to the rear of the building by the Watchmen on duty..there you are passed into the coutard where prisoners for the hells are delivered. You hand over Tsuto with little formality the duty scribe takes your copies of the evidence and depositions and you are curtly dismissed as Tsuto is hustled none to gently away.

"The gulls and pigeons had a place in these lands without these walls here as well as the rat." Muchorak sighs, "Yes most of this land we traversed was more plains like, but the land is still beautiful. And the land provides greatly for those who respect it." Looking again at the tall buildings, "It is those that fear it that hide in such places as this, they fear the land that the gods gave them and instead of understanding it they barricade themselves from it so that next they encounter it they have forgotten where they started."

Noting that the man they had brought here in the cage has been taken away, Ali pipes up with a small spark of hope in her voice "Bad bad man gone gone now. We go back outside nown yes yes?" As she looks up at her larger companions, although she does lower her gaze to include Naria as well.

"Where would we go outside the town?" Naria asks sounding somewhat unsure of the idea

Way back when -- Romon and Kallie bought everyone clothes, a book for Marak, and a shortsword for Muchorak.

Out in the square, Romon is waiting for the rest of the party. He tries to stay out of sight and circles around to sneak up behind the hindmost party member.

Stealth 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

If he makes it unseen he booms out, "Hello!"

If he's caught during his approach he grins sheepishly and stares at the ground for a while.

In either case he knows a great place to get a meal from "one of those Inner Sea countries", spicy lamb and something like small rice. Truly not a meal to miss. Romon will lobby hard for dinner, even offering to buy. And he knows a great inn. Libraries for Marak. Weapon-smiths for Muchorak. Guided tours including the Old Thassilonian ruins. "I think I can promise something truly special for the Irespan."

Wellard:

Spoiler:
It's also a place well out of the way of his normal haunts.

So how do you want to handle resolving Romon's backstory? I'm willing to RP as much as you like, but don't want to hold up the rest of the story line. We can bury it way in the background, we can get the party involved. Romon can spend a fair amount of time separated form the party, or everyone could be dragged along. You're the DM we'll handle it however you like.

In any case Romon's first move is to try to contact Cearnis, his old tutor in crime tonight. He'd probably go alone or maybe take Ali. Again depends what you want to do.

Regarding the Irespan, he's thinking sunrise out at the end looking over the city.

Regarding muzzles -- his idea is to buy a couple pair and mostly cut through them so that they'll break apart if loaded.

Ugh! Inikai is traveling with a bunch of hippies! On a serious note, I think we are picturing a modern city. Certainly a pseudo-medieval city would contain undeveloped areas. I saw a picture taken in NYC in the 1870s and it showed a cow in a large muddy field with small buildings in the distance. Magnimar is probably more like that than a modern metropolis.

"Please give Magnimar a few days. There are some sights here worth seeing. For my part, I would like to visit some booksellers before we leave. Besides, I don't think we should return to Sandpoint for the time being and we have no concrete destination for now."

Muchorak smiles at the mention of spiced foods, "I have enjoyed the spices of far away lands on my other visits to civilized lands." He looks at Romon, "Of course as long as the place is friendly to all of our companions."

to Inakais commant , the map of the city would suggest otherwise..remember in 1870 New York was just over 200 years old..Magnimar is at least 500 years old....think Roman London not Colonial America

You spot Romoon trying to be unobtrusive and he leads you to a small building redolent with the smaell of spices..There you have a meal which should excite some comment to those of you not used to Golarions more exotic lands

Inikai is very impressed with the meal and with Romon's arrangements. He alternates his attention between new dishes and any fetching serving girls. At the same time he makes discrete looks around to see if any of the other patrons show undue interest in him or his friends.

Are the wolf and bear inside the restaurant with them? If so, it everyone would be paying attention to the table.

If he had time to buy some while they were handing over Tsuto, yes. He will hand over the muzzles. He shows Muchorak and Ali that he has partially cut through the leather straps so that they muzzles will part easily.

It takes some time to convince Ali of the function, purpose and necessity of the muzzles, for at first she is stupified and horrified by the very idea of them, but eventually comes to understand their necessity in this place and moreover that her sneaky friend had found a way to allow Lunas to still defend himself even with one on. When she realizes this Roman is rewarded with another big smile, hug and kiss on the cheek.

Then when it is suggested that Lunas remain outside the place of eating there is another small rebellion, but if her friends insist she will aquiese, and after a huddled conversation the big wolf finally seems to accept the idea as well. Throughout the meal, which Ali does not touch much of because of the "funny tastes" she seems distracted, the reason beinh her constant checking in on Lunas through their emotional bond.

One dish however does capture here complete attention, never in her memory having tasted anything sweet besides honey, when Ali is convinced to try something from the dessert platter she gives a squeal of surprised delight and attacks the platter with gusto.

Whilst in the eatery you pick up some gossip...

It would appear that the King of Korvosa is dead and his Chelaxian wife has taken over rule of the city.Rumours of plague have reached Magnimar and every Korvosan vessel is quarantined in the port before being allowed to land it's cargo.

Which ties this party in nicely with the timescale of Thoms's CoCT Campaign

Male Human Binder 11 |Init +7 |HP 68/102 |AC 19 FF 16 T 13| CMD +8 | F+10 R+10 W+9 Percep +8

The thought of plague fills Inikai with dread. Suddenly the great city seems threatening to him. "I think we should conduct our business here quickly and retreat outside the walls. But what is it we would like to do? It is unlikely that we would be welcome in Sandpoint again with the lies spread against Romon. And Sandpoint seems too small and provincial now. I would like to see the world while the chance is here."

"Agreed, there are many things for me to still learn in this world." The talks of plague make even Muchorak uncomfortable.

Wellard:

Spoiler:
If you want to fast forward we can just say Cearnis is not at home tonight. Romon leaves some agreed upon mark. In the morning Cearnis has left a countersign meaning, "not safe. try later".

Nope i'm all set

We fast forward to the next day then..

Dawn see's you up and about already..it's hard to adapt to city life and you are all used to being on the go early..so although breakfast is easily obtainable at the hour you choose you find yourself walking almost empty streets to return to the Courts.

Once there you have a long wait as the place gradually comes to life..Eventually you are admitted to the building where you have another interminably long wait for the courts to convene.

He's got pointed ears, like Spock. // AC 17, FF 14, T 15 // HP 68/73 // F,R,W 7,11,4 // Percept 14 + // Init +4

Romon is dragging through the morning, yawning and drowsing. If anyone asks, "I didn't sleep well."

Again, he'll beg off from entering the courts. He has no evidence to offer, and he has people to see around town and shopping to do. He'll meet you at noon in the big square in front of the courts.

Wellard,

Spoiler:

some potential purchases for Romon:

3220 gold less 100 gp in expenses. + 180 gp in gold and gems previously held.

Possible buys:
ring of protection +1 -- 2k,
+1 to armour -- 1k,
spell storing dagger 2304 gp,
wand of CLW 750 gp,
dust of tracelessness 250gp,
cloak of eleven kind 2500 gp,
cloak of resistance+1 1000 gp ,
disguise kit , cost unresearched

Are any of these right out? Would any require waiting for a custom order?

I'm assuming Cearnis warned off a meeting.

As the more drags along at it's slow pace, Muchorak wishes more and more for the open lands or for more simple locations such as Sandpoint. The wait within the building for the 'courts' to begin, Muchorak finds himself reflecting on the trials of his tribe...so much simpler and certainly with less waiting.

Ali finds the wait inside the false stone two leg den to be almosyt impoossible to bear. If there is a window she wil stand gazing yearningly out it towards the open land or sky. If the is no window she will pace agitatedly back and forth across the floor, continuously looking towards the door through which they entered. Lunas, being more stoic, sits regally and waits, although occasionally he moves to nuzzle his den-sister into calmness once again.

Inikai sits impatiently for the hearings to proceed. He hopes that it will not be a long affair. Even though they did capture Tsuto none of them can truly claim to have seen him commit any of the crimes that he is charged with. Of course, his letters about Nualia will be damning to Tstuto. Will that be enough? Law is an area that Inikai knows little of and would rather not involve himself in.

The hearing is brief..you are called to give a statement before the judges as a group...Tsuto stands impassivly in the dock as he listens to you..he offers no defence and his sentence is inevitable..as a Parricide he is guilty of lesser treason and will die on the gallows at the next hanging day.

The presiding Judge a thin faced elf named Justice Ironbriar commends you for your duty and tells you that you may depart in the knowledge of having done society a service and with that it is over..the court clears and you have nothing to do now but return to Sandpoint and report.

Odd, the RRS feed shows Wellard's last post but I can't see it here in the thread...

Thrilled to be out of the overbearing building and the trial to which she paid little attention and had even less understanding, Ali breathes the 'fresh' air and looks about for her sneaky friend. Also, recalling something Icky said earlier and having no comprehension of the unlikely odds, she also keeps an eye out for her good friend Kallie too.

That's wierd I cant see my post either..reposting.

Tsuto's hearing is little more than a formality..the evidence, your statements and the fact that he does not try to defend himself in any way mean that in less than an hour he has been found guilty of parricide and petty treason.Justice ironbriar a thin faced elf sentences him to the gallows sentence to be carried out at the next hanging day some 3 weeks hence.

"As for using magic to reveal the truth about Romon and that girl, the townsfolk are not likely to believe an outsider in this. They will probably think that you are lying, Marak. But, I cannot think of an alternative."

A bit of metagaming here: I have no objection to returning but I thought that Magnimar would be the next step in the series.
